CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
La Fabbrica, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Young Artist Program
The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma launches an innovative 'on-the-job-training'
programme for the main professional figures involved in the staging of operas
and musical theatre: the Fabbrica.
The Fabbrica (literally, the factory) is the first Young Artist Program that
offers Italian and foreign new talents the chance to enter the world of opera
after their training in conservatoires and academies.
Participants will be able to enrich their own artistic and professional baggage
through meetings with artists of the contemporary scene, auditions with
agencies, rehearsals, lessons and many hours of practical and creative work
alongside the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma guest artists.
TO WHOM IT APPLIES
The course is open to: composers, librettists, directors, set designers, costume
designers, lighting designers, répétiteurs and singers who have already
completed their studies and who may already have a certain amount of work
experience. Applicants must already have adequate training in their chosen
professional field, that can be documented upon request.
The Fabbrica can accept a maximum of 17 participants on each two-year
course: 1 composer, 1 librettist, 1 director, 1 set designer, 1 costume designer,
1 lighting designer, 3 répétiteurs and 8 singers.
DURATION OF THE COURSE
The deadline for sending your application is 12 noon on Saturday the 14 th of
November 2015.
Interviews and auditions will be held from the 7th to the 14th of December 2015.
Applicants whose CV is not deemed suitable will not be invited for an interview
or audition.
The course is split into two six-month periods:
- the first semester will run from January to July 2016,
- the second semester will run from January to July 2017.
The course will start on 07.01.2016.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE
The Fabbrica will be based in the theatre, venues and workshops belonging to
Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
Over the course of 2016 and 2017 participants will be involved in:
- the creation and performance of a new composition of musical theatre at
the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma,
- the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma's educational and promotional activities,
- the performance of at least one opera at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma
or other international theatres.
Successful applicants will be awarded a scholarship of €7,000 (net) in the first
semester and another €7,000 (net) in the second. These scholarships will be
paid in various instalments over the course of each semester.
GENERAL TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Any non attendance of the Fabbrica activities will entail a reduction of the
scholarship’s global amount or, in the case of persistent non participation,
suspension from the course.
The team of the Fabbrica project reserve the right not to invite participants
back for the second semester if considered undeserving of this opportunity.
Furthermore, any participation in opera projects shall be at the total discretion
of the team of the Fabbrica project.
APPLICATIONS
General pre-requisites, for all classes:
The Fabbrica is a project aimed at artists just setting out on their chosen
careers and so there is no set age limit for potential applicants.
Non EU participants whose application has been accepted are requested to
obtain a valid study visa for Italy; this shall cover the entire duration of the
course.
Participants have a good knowledge of either English or Italian; the ability to
speak Italian is, in any case, preferable.
Applicants with no knowledge of the Italian language may still be accepted on
the course, provided they undertake to reach a good level of fluency by the end
of the first semester.

by the 7th of November 2015, as well as any extra documents required for the
individual classes:
- their completed application form (here below),
- a detailed CV,
- a scan of a valid document proving their identity,
- a scan of a bank slip proving payment of €50.

Structure of the project and pre-requisites for admission to each class:
Composers
Composers will be guided through the creation of a contemporary opera to be
staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica participants.
The study programme will include meetings with international composers, who
will hold special seminars for the participants. Moreover, composers will have
free access to all the activities of the Fabbrica and the Teatro dell’Opera di
Roma.
Composers should send us the score of two of their own compositions for
musical theatre or for orchestra and, if possible, a file with an actual
performance. If the music has yet to be performed, the full score will suffice.
Scores can be sent in pdf form or via wetransfer to [email protected]
Scores sent by post will not be accepted.
Selection will be based on the applicant's CV, an appraisal of the works
presented and an interview.
Librettists
Librettists will be guided through the creation of a contemporary opera to be
staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica participants.

Moreover, librettists will have free access to all the activities of the Fabbrica
and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.
Librettists should send us two of their own works falling within the following
genres: opera librettos, poems, theatrical plays, stories, novels. The material
can be sent in either Italian or English. Works can be sent in pdf form or via
wetransfer to [email protected] Works sent by post will not be accepted.
Selection will be based on the applicant's CV, an appraisal of the works
presented and an interview.
Directors
Directors will be guided through the creation of a contemporary opera and an
opera to be staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica
participants. Directors will be also required to act as assistants to the guest
creative teams of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and are expected to attend all
meetings between directors, set designers, costume designers and lighting
designers organised at the Fabbrica.
Applicants must have previous experience in direction (theatre, opera, cinema
and/or video). Directors should send a video of one of their own productions
or, alternatively, a detailed plan of an idea for a production to

Set designers
Set designers will be guided through the creation of a contemporary opera and
an opera to be staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica
participants. Set designers will be also required to act as assistants to the guest
creative teams of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and are expected to attend all
meetings between directors, set designers, costume designers and lighting
designers organised at the Fabbrica.
Applicants must have previous experience in the field of set design. Applicants
should send a video of one of their own works or, alternatively, models, photos

Costume designers
Costume designers will be guided through the creation of a contemporary
opera and an opera to be staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving
the Fabbrica participants. Costume designers will be required to act as
assistants to the guest creative teams of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and are
expected to attend all meetings between directors, set designers, costume
designers and lighting designers organised at the Fabbrica. Costume designers
will also be involved in the staging of exhibitions (in the theatre or other
venues) of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma historical costumes.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a proper knowledge of the history of
costume and a proper understanding of sartorial techniques; they should also
have work experience in the field of theatre. Applicants should send a video of
one of their own works or, alternatively, models, photos or drawings to

Selection will be based on the applicant's CV, an appraisal of the works
presented and an interview.
Lighting designers
Lighting designers will be guided through the creation of a contemporary
opera and an opera to be staged by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving
the Fabbrica participants. Lighting designers will be required to act as
assistants to the guest creative teams of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and are
expected to attend all meetings between directors, set designers, costume
designers, lighting designers and video makers/video projectionists organised
at the Fabbrica.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a proper knowledge and/or experience
in the field of lighting. Applicants should send a video of one of their own
works to [email protected] If this is impossible, applicants should be
able to demonstrate, during an interview, a proper understanding of theatrical
lighting and its evolution, console technology and projection techniques.
Selection will be based on the applicant's CV, an appraisal of the works
presented and an interview.
Répétiteurs
Successful applicants will assist the Teatro dell’Opera répétiteurs during all
the rehearsals and are expected to attend all meetings with orchestra
conductors and any master class organised by the Fabbrica. Répétiteurs will be

required to prepare a contemporary opera and an opera to be staged by the
Teatro dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica participants.
Applicants will be invited to an audition including the following tests:
- from the beginning of the second act of Puccini's La Bohème. Numeri
musicali 1-20, pages 82-128, ed. Ricordi 1897.
- from Strauss' Elektra. Numeri musicali 1-35, pages 1-20, ed. Fürstner.
- sight-reading of a repertoire aria.
The applicant will be asked to hum the vocal line.
Selection will be based on the applicant's CV and audition.
Singers
Selected singers will be expected to act as covers for guest artists during
rehearsals and performances. They could also be asked to perform in
secondary roles during the opera season. Singers will also be required to
prepare a contemporary opera and an opera to be staged by the Teatro
dell’Opera di Roma involving the Fabbrica participants. Music rehearsal with
the Teatro dell’Opera guest conductors will be arranged in order to analyse
different aspects of opera repertoire, as well as master classes with guest
singers. Successful applicants are also expected to attend all meetings with
orchestra conductors and any master class organised by the Fabbrica. Singers
will be offered a real chance to build their career by attending meetings and
auditions with various figures operating in the field of opera.
Applicants shall audition at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, preparing three
arias, at least one of which to be in Italian. These arias are to be sung in their
entirety and in the original versions and tonality. Applicants must send a
perfectly legible scan of the score for each of their chosen arias to
