Elogiato dal New York Times per la sua “splendida sensibilità di esecuzione” e
“straordinaria agilità”, Avi Avital, mandolinista nominato ai Classical Grammy Awards,
rappresenta sicuramente uno dei più emozionanti ed intraprendenti musicisti sul panorama
mondiale, impegnato nel tentativo di creare un nuovo lascito per il mandolino tramite
interpretazioni virtuose che spaziano attraverso numerosi generi.
Avi Avital è celebrato internazionalmente per le sue numerose esecuzioni in rinomate sedi quali
Carnegie Hall e Lincoln Center a New York, la Berlin Philarmonic Hall, KKL Luzern, Forbidden
City Concert Hall a Beijing e Wigmore Hall a Londra.
Ha suonato come solista assieme alla Israeli Philarmonic Orchestra, i Pomeriggi Musicali di
Milano, la San Francisco Chamber Orchestra e la Berliner Symphoniker diretto, tra gli altri, da
Mstislav Rostropovich, Sir Simon Rattle e Philippe Entremont.
Avital ha collaborato a lungo con artisti come il clarinettista Giora Feidman, il soprano Dawn
Upshaw ed il compositore e trombettista Frank London.
Ha inoltre partecipato ai festival musicali di Tanglewood, Luzern, Spoleto e Ravenna.
Avi Avital è il primo mandolinista a ricevere una nomination ai GRAMMY nella categoria “Migliori
solista strumentale” (2010) per la sua registrazione del concerto per mandolino di Avner
Dorman (Metropolis Ensemble/Andrew Cyr). Ha inoltre vinto numerose competizioni e
riconoscimenti, quali il premio tedesco ECHO per i suoi lavori con David Orlowsky (2008) e la
AVIV Competition (2007), la più importante gara nazionale per i solisti israeliani.
Nato a Be’er Sheva nel 1978, in Israele, ha cominciato a suonare il mandolino all’età di otto
anni per poi unirsi alla giovane orchestra di mandolin fondata e diretta dal suo carismatico
insegnante, il violinist russo Simcha Nathanson. Si è in seguito diplomato all’Accademia
Musicale di Gerusalemme e al Conservatorio Cesare Pollini di Padova, dove ha studiato il
repertorio originale per mandolin con Ugo Orlandi.
Avital ha pubblicato numerose registrazioni in un’ampia varietà di generi, passando per il
klezmer, il barocco e la musica classica contemporanea. Attualmente registra esclusivamente
con la Deutsche Grammophon e il suo debutto (2012) conteneva la personale trascrizione del
Concerto per arpa e violino di J. S. Bach, arrangiato per mandolino e orchestra. Il suo disco
successivo includerà composizioni di musica da camera di Ernest Bloch e De Falla, fino a
musiche tradizionali bulgare e sarà rilasciato agli inizi del 2014.
Da evidenziare le recenti esibizioni alla Schleswig-Holstein Musik Fest e Aspen Music Festival,
Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road workshop su una nuova composizione di David Bruce, “Avital incontra
Avital”, una fusione di numerosi generi con l’artista jazz Omer Avital al Musikfest di Brema e al
Jewish Culture Days Festival a Berlino, oltre a ingaggi con la San Francisco Chamber
Orchestra, Oxford Philomusica and Potsdam Kammerakademie.
Ulteriori impegni includono i Concerti con l’Orchestre National de Montpellier, la Taiwan
National Symphony Orchestra, la Potsdam Kammerakademie, la Philarmonischer
Kammerorchester Berlin, e tour con la Brandeburg Orchestra in Australia e con la Geneva
Chamber Orchestra in Europa, incluso il teatro di Chatelet a Parigi e il King’s Place a Londra.
Future esibizioni solistiche si svolgeranno invece alla Vancouver Recital Society e al Carnegie
Hall Presents (Weill Hall).

“stunning agility”, Grammy-nominated mandolinist Avi Avital is one of the world’s most exciting
and adventurous musicians. He is deeply committed to building a fresh legacy for the mandolin
through virtuosic performance in a range of genres and commissioning new works for mandolin.
Avi Avital is internationally regarded for his performances at venues including Carnegie Hall
(Weill Hall), Lincoln Center, Berlin Philharmonie, KKL Luzern, Forbidden City Concert Hall in
Beijing and the Wigmore Hall. He has appeared as soloist with the Berliner Symphoniker,
Orchestre National de Montpellier, Oxford Philomusica, Sczczecin Philharmonic, Potsdam
Kammerakademie, Philharmonischer Kammerorchester Berlin, Metropolis Ensemble NY,
Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Geneva Camerata, Israel Philharmonic, I Pomeriggi Musicali
di Milano and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. He has collaborated extensively with
artists such as Giora Feidman, Dawn Upshaw and Richard Galliano and has also been featured
at the Tanglewood, Luzern, Spoleto, and Ravenna summer Festivals.
Avi Avital is the first mandolin player to receive a GRAMMY nomination in the category “Best
Instrumental Soloist” (2010) for his recording of Avner Dorman’s Mandolin Concerto (Metropolis
Ensemble/Andrew Cyr). He has won numerous competitions and awards including Germany’s
ECHO Prize for his 2008 recording with the David Orlowsky Trio and the AVIV Competition
(2007), the preeminent national competition for Israeli soloists.
Born in Be’er Sheva, southern Israel in 1978, he began learning the mandolin at the age of eight
and soon joined the flourishing mandolin youth orchestra founded and directed by his
charismatic teacher, Russian-born violinist Simcha Nathanson. He later graduated from the
Jerusalem Music Academy and the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini in Padova, Italy where he
studied the original mandolin repertoire with Ugo Orlandi.
Avital has released various recordings in the disparate genres of klezmer, baroque and
contemporary classical music. He now records exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon and his
debut release featured his own transcriptions of J S Bach Concertos for harpsichord and violin.
His second disc “Between Worlds” introduced chamber music compositions from Ernest Bloch
and De Falla to traditional Bulgarian Folk tunes and was released in 2014 to critical acclaim. He
records Vivaldi Concertos with the Venice Baroque Orchestra for release in 2015.
Recent highlights include Concerto performances at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival,
Aspen Music Festival, Performances of “Between Worlds” at the Salzburg Festival, Vienna
Konzerthaus, Poisson Rouge NY, Bremen Sendessaal, Rolandseck, Seoul, Castellar Festival
and the Riga Festival whilst recitals included the Rheingau Festival, Musikfest Bremen, Schoss
Elmau, Bristol Proms, Carnegie Hall Presents and Vancouver Recital Society.
Forthcoming engagements include Concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Kremerata
Baltica, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Kölner Akademie, Geneva Camerata, Israel Camerata,
Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra,Wroclaw Philharmonic, Hamburg Symphony and I Musici di
Roma and an extensive tour of the USA and South America with the Venice Baroque Orchestra.
He makes his solo recital debut at the Wigmore Hall and other recitals include the University of
Chicago, Stanford University, Cremona, Salle Gaveau, Globe Theatre in London, Manchester
Chamber Concerts Society, Dortmund Konzerthaus, Montreal Bach Festival, Verbier Festival,
Buenos Aires, Taiwan, Cartagena Festival (Colombia) in collabroations with Mahan Esfahani,
Ksenija Sidorova, Ray Chen, David Greilsamer, Andreas Scholl and the Danish String Quartet.
