THE TEACHER
Born in Rome (Italy, 1965), Gian Luigi Zampieri has been the latest disciple of the legendary
maestro FRANCO FERRARA to whom he owes his moral and musical formation: under His
guidance G.L.Z. undertook his studies.
G.L.Z. improved his studies under Francesco De Masi, Carlo Maria Giulini, Gennadi
Rozhdestvensky and Leonard Bernstein attending conducting masterclasses at the
Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Accademia Musicale Chigiana in
Siena.
Following the teachings of FRANCO FERRARA, G.L.Z. acquired a wide knowledge in all
musical instruments technique, being firmly convinced that a conductor has to talk to all
musicians in "their own language": this approach allowed him to deepen the
methodological literature and the historical repertoire of all musical instruments.

During the "Chigiana era" he won the prestigious SIAE
scholarship (Italian Society of Composers and Publishers) as the
best pupil (1987) and at the end of the academic run he was
granted the Honor Diploma in conducting (the second ever
awarded since the foundation of the Academy).
In 1980, at age 15, G.L.Z. was appointed titular Organist of the
Vatican Basilica of St. Maria in Trastevere where has been
active for twenty years.
Finalist at the 1989 edition of the "Carlo Zecchi International Competition for Conductors" (3rd Prize),
G.L.Z. won the 5th edition of the "Antonio
Pedrotti International Competition for Conductors" in 1997.

G.L.Z. has been working as assistant conductor of Lorin Maazel (Toscanini Orchestra,
Italy 2007) and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky (London Symphony, BBC Symphony, London
1989 – Accademia Chigiana, Siena 1989).
He was invited to conduct the opening concert of Symphonic Seasons 2008 and 2009 of
Teatro San Carlo di Napoli (Italy).
He toured with Haifa Symphony Orchestra (Israel),
Haydn Symphony Orchestra (Bozen, Italy), Lecce
Symphony Orchestra (Italy), performing as Conductor,
Pianist, Arranger, Narrator in symphonic programs
including works by Ginastera, Villa Lobos and Piazzolla.
Between 1997 and 2004 he conducted around 30 programs
with the Haydn Symphony Orchestra of Bozen (Italy).
Besides his own conducting and teaching activity G.L.Z. is also active as a composer of sacred and
symphonic pages: his main preferences in writing Music are contrapuntal structures.
Among his most significant works:
7th Brandenburg Concerto (premiered by Orchestra Sinfonica Abruzzese, 1994)
«Non nobis Domine, portrait of Jacques de Molay» (premiered by the Chamber
Orchestra of Bucharest Radio, 2011)
G.L.Z. is very involved in re-evaluating the italian symphonic repertoire os XX century
(the unexplored Ottorino Respighi, Guido Alberto Fano, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Gian
Francesco Malipiero, Nino Rota, Giorgio Federico Ghedini, FRANCO FERRARA).
Since the mid-1980s he's dedicating himself to divulge the reform of contemporary Tango,
structured by the argentinian composer and bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla, through a lot of
worldwide renowned transcriptions, orchestrations and arrangements of his works
(performed also by Vladimir Spivakov, Lalo Schifrin, Jorge Calandrelli, Ettore Stratta,
etc.).
On June 12th2005 he was invited to conduct the memorial concert for Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli for the
10th anniversary of his death.
G.L.Z. has realized and conducted several programs for the Vatican Radio.
His concerts has been recorded by RAI, Vatican Radio, Spanish TV, Russian TV,
European Union of Broadcasting Networks, Romanian Radio.
Since very young he was introduced in the "world cinema", working as music consultant for the italian
edition of the movie "Amadeus" by Milos Forman and playing Organ in many soundtracks; he also appears
in the movies "Russicum, the day of Enemy" by Pasquale Squitieri and "Me, Don Juan" by Carlos Saura.
Furtherly he transcribed a lot of film music themes for his own "A Trumpet around the
World" with Nello Salza (the so-called "Trumpet of Italian Cinema"), with whom has
been performing for more than 30 years.
Since 1996 G.L.Z. is the Organist at the Royal House of Bourbon - Two Sicilies and
Knight of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George.
Besides his musical career G.L.Z. is intellectually busy in other fields with many
appearances in philosofical, medical and historical areas: he was invited – as lecturer –
by:
the World Congress of Psychiatry (2003), dissertating about "The evocative power
of Music"
the Mathematic Faculty of the Rome University (Sciences Festival 2009)
discoursing on the subject "Verba volant, etiam sonus"
G.L.Z. is also consultant of the group "Let's combat pain" of Pharma Finance (Flemington,
New Jersey – USA) and the ISAL Foundation for the use of Music in algological therapies.
Furtherly – as lecturer – he has treated the subject: «The Juppiter Symphony Mozart
builder between "just" and "perfect"»; on this theme and with the same title he is going
to issue a book through the publisher Tipheret.
G.L.Z. has also written a lot of essays about Gnostic Christianity, Templarism, Sacred
Geometry, being devoted researcher in Symbolism and Hermetic tradition: he observes
symbological principles' use in Music and other artistic expressions.
Since 1986 G.L.Z. is a professor in the italian State Conservatories of Music: at that time
he was granted this appointment as the youngest professor in Italy for artistic merit.

Gian Luigi Zampieri lives in Rome (Italy), speaks Italian, Português, English and is married to the polish
violinist Estera Elzbieta Kawula.
RULES OF THE MASTERCLASS
The Masterclass will be held in Nepi (VT, Italy), in the halls of the Associazione Leonardo, ( Piazza
del Duomo # 2) , from 08 august 2014 to 10 august 2014 .
The course will take place every day with lectures (analysis, instrumentation, history, etc. . ) And
practical rehearsal with orchestra.
The masterclass is open to students of any age, gender and nationality.

The registration fee is set to € 100, the attendance fee to € 400, and the single fee for unregistered
students is € 100 (to be paid on the first day of classes ) .
Each student will be required to pay the registration fee on the occurrence of the registration , by
bank transfer to the account IT 49A 08778 73190 00000 2302557 payable to " Associazione
Culturale Leonardo " (reason : Conducting Masterclass Enrollment ) and send a copy via e-mail .
The deadline to register is fixed for the day 07/21/2014 .
The attendance fee must be paid by the morning of the first day of class .
At the end of the course there will be a final public concert where students deemed worthy by the
teacher will perform.
Each student will receive a certificate of attendance.
In case of cancellation of the course due to insufficient number of participants , or any other reason ,
each student will be entitled to a full refund of the fees.
Students will stay at the Convent "San Tolomeo dei Servi di Maria" in the town center and within
walking distance of the school where the lessons take place .
The fixed cost is 20 € per person per night (room only) in a single room .
Any reservations at the convent will be handled directly by the organization, will be sufficient to
specify by email the intention to stay in Nepi .
