SERENA FARNOCCHIA
Soprano
Born in Pietrasanta (Italy), she studied with Gianpiero Mastromei. In 1995 she was one of the youngest winner of the
“Luciano Pavarotti Competition” in Philadelphia. In 1998 she attended the Accademia of Teatro alla Scala, and soon
after she made her house debut in Don Giovanni (Donna Anna), under the baton of Riccardo Muti.
Since then she established a remarkably international career performing regularly in some prestigious opera houses and
festivals including Teatro alla Scala, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago, Teatro Regio di
Torino, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Opéra de Lausanne,
Grand Théâtre de Genève, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Liceu de Barcelona, New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv,
Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Teatro
Municipal de Santiago de Chile, Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
She collaborated with such important conductors as Bruno Bartoletti, Vladimir Jurowski, Nicola Luisotti, Zubin Mehta,
Riccardo Muti, Gianandrea Noseda, Daniel Oren, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Pinchas Steinberg, and directors like Paul Curran,
Willy Decker, Gabriele Lavia, Jonathan Miller, Michele Placido, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Pier’Alli, Luca Ronconi.
He opened the 2015/16 season performing Falstaff (Alice) and Il viaggio a Remis (Madama Cortese) at Opernhaus in
Zurich.
Among her future plans are Maria Stuarda (title role) at Seattle Opera, Idomeneo (Elettra) in Antwerp, Don Giovanni
(Donna Elvira) at New National Theatre of Tokyo and at Staatstheater Stuttgart, Madama Butterfly at Teatro San Carlo
in Napoli and La bohème (Mimì) at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. She will also be heard as soprano soloist in
Messa da Requiem by Verdi with the Sinfonieorchester of Münster.
During the 2014/15 she performed Simon Boccanegra (Amelia) at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, followed by Otello
(Desdemona) at Seoul Arts Center, Don Carlo (Elisabetta) at New National Theatre of Tokyo, Les Contes d’Hoffmann
(Antonia) alla Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Madama Butterfly (Cio-Cio-San) at Opéra de Lille and at Grand
Theatre de la Ville de Luxembourg, La bohème (Mimì) at Terme di Caracalla in Rome.
She opened the 2013/14 season with her triumphant performance as Anna Bolena at Welsh National Opera in Cardiff,
followed by a new production of Falstaff (Alice) at Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, signed by Luca Ronconi. Manon Lescaut
(title role) at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma under the baton of Riccardo Muti, Don Giovanni (Donna Elvira) at
Glyndebourne Festival and Turandot (Liù) at Festival Puccini di Torre del Lago.
In the past seasons she took part in important productions including Il Pirata (Imogente) at Liceu de Barcelona, Anna
Bolena (titole role) at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, Le nozze di Figaro (Contessa) at the Maggio
Musicale Fiorentino and at the Semperoper in Dresden, Il trovatore (Leonora) at the Teatro Regio di Parma, at the
Opéra de Lausanne and at the Semperoper in Dresden, La bohème (Mimì) at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Otello
(Desdemona) at the Semperoper in Dresden, La battaglia di Legnano (Lida) at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma,
Turandot (Liù) at the Festival Puccini in Torre del Lago, Don Giovanni at San Francisco Opera and at Grand Théâtre de
Genève, Falstaff at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and Così fan tutte at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo and in Hong Kong,
Luisa Miller (title role) at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, as well as Rossini’s Stabat Mater with the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv.
