In 1911 the 24 year old Charles Edouard Jeanneret (the future Le Corbusier) undertook
his famous „Voyage d‟Orient‟ through the Balkans, to Istanbul and Bursa, the

Monasteries of Mount Athos, the Acropolis in Athens, the ruins of Pompeii, the Villa
Adriana, and of course Rome. As he went he sketched and photographed what he saw,
storing up impressions for later use. In later life the architect referred to the Voyage in
almost epic terms, as if he had returned to the roots of Mediterranean civilization in
search of the essentials of architecture itself. In 1929, the year of that canonical modern
work the Villa Savoye at Poissy, the so called „pope‟ of modernism declared that he was
accused of being a revolutionary but that the past was „his only real master‟.
To honour the Centenary of the Voyage d’Orient (1911-2011) William J.R. Curtis
(the author of several seminal works on both Le Corbusier and modern
architecture in general) will deliver a lecture with the title ‘The Shadows of
Time. Echoes of Le Corbusier’s ’Voyage d’Orient’. In this he will reflect upon the
architect‟s powers of observation, abstraction and transformation, suggesting ways in
which Le Corbusier penetrated to the underlying ideas of past examples prior to
integrating them in his own creative universe. The lecture will consider „the poetry of
ruins‟, the search for constants in tradition, and the role of metamorphoses in the
architect‟s processes of invention. In turn it will evoke the meaning of shadow and light
in Le Corbusier‟s architecture, and the role of both memory and the dark recesses of the
unconscious in his mythical interpretation of the world. Above all the lecture will be
concerned with the „presence of the past‟ in the mind of a great architect.
William J. R. Curtis (born 1948) is a historian, critic, writer, painter and photographer. He has
taught at numerous universities around the world including Harvard, the AA and the University of
Cambridge (Slade Professor of Fine Art, 2003-4). Among his books are: Modern Architecture
Since 1900 (fully revised 3rd ed. 1996: Italian edition, Lʼarchitettura moderna dal 1900), Le
Corbusier: Ideas and Forms (1986), Balkrishna Doshi: an Architecture for India (1989) and Denys
Lasdun: Architecture, City, Landscape (1994). More recent publications include La Estructura de
las Sombras/ The Structure of Shadows, Bell-Lloc (2009),Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon: Obra
Completa/ Complete Works (2010), and Ideas of Architecture and Architectural Ideas, The Very
Best Works at the Turn of the Century / Las Mejores Obras de Principios de Siglo, El Croquis,
Madrid, October 2011. He contributes regularly to journals such as the Architectural Review,
D‟Architectures and El Croquis, and has written monographic studies on Alvaro Siza, Rafael
Moneo, Tadao Ando, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Carlos Ferrater, among others. Curtis has received
several awards, most recently a medal from the Museum of Finnish Architecture, and he often sits
on architectural juries. He also exhibits and publishes his paintings, drawings and photographs:
Mental Landscapes (Alvar Aalto Academy, 2000); Mental Landscapes/ Paisajes Mentales, (Circulo
de Bellas Artes, Madrid, 2002); Structures of Light (Alvar Aalto Academy, 2007).

Il concorso ricerca idee progettuali in grado di risolvere i diversi problemi che nascono in
situazioni di emergenza. Negli ultimi anni frequenti fenomeni naturali hanno sconvolto
la vita di molte comunità sparse per il globo: Fukushima in Giappone, Haiti, L‟Aquila e
New Orleans.
Il Box è una piccola struttura temporanea che può svolgere diverse funzioni: uno
spazio che sia al contempo work-station e centro informazioni aperto al pubblico che
permetta alla popolazione di rimanere sempre in contatto con il resto del mondo.
Nella proposta progettuale saranno considerati preminenti gli aspetti tecnologici siano
essi di natura low tech o high tech. La sfida è di coniugare la sostenibilità e il
design parametrico.
CALENDARIO:
Il termine ultimo entro cui mandare le proposte progettuali è il 15 gennaio 2012. Il 15
febbraio saranno resi noti i nomi dei dieci finalisti. Il 30 marzo saranno proclamati i tre
vincitori.
SELEZIONE e PREMI:
La giuria della prima fase selezionerà dieci progetti finalisti (visibili sul sito
www.contanima.com) tra cui, la giuria della seconda fase sceglierà i tre vincitori. Al
primo classificato andrà un premio di 10.000 dollari, al secondo di 4.000 dollari e al terzo
di 3.000 dollari. Sarà inoltre istituito un premio “Giuria popolare” di 5.000 dollari
assegnato al progetto, uno tra i dieci finalisti, che avrà ottenuto maggiori preferenze dai
visitatori del sito contanima. Analist Group provvederà inoltre allo stanziamento di
10.000 dollari per la realizzazione di un modello del progetto vincitore.
