RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Research field: bioengineering of the respiratory system.
Current areas of interest include:
a) Development of innovative methods for optoelectronic analysis of thoraco-abdominal kinematics and
volumes during respiration.
b) Development of double body Plethysmography for measuring blood shifts from and to the trunk;
c) Modelling of respiratory mechanics: functional models of the actions of respiratory muscles; rib cage
mechanics; measurement of the viscoelastic properties of the respiratory system; cardiopulmonary
interactions during exercise.
d) Creating a deeper understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the respiratory system in
exercise; the effects of flow limitation on chest wall mechanics during exercise; the effects of
mechanical ventilation and anesthesia on thoraco-abdominal motion; electrical stimulation of
respiratory muscles; respiratory kinematics in pulmonary and neuromuscular disease.
e) Development of software and hardware systems particularly with regard to measurement problems
(volume, flow, pressure, gas concentration and motion) of the respiratory system; development of new
methods of respiratory mechanics analysis based on the forced oscillation technique; development of
new methods for the measurements of oxygen consumption on a breath-by-breath basis.
f) Analysis of mono- and bi-dimensional physiologic signals, in particular, the correlation between
motion of the external thoraco-abdominal surface area with the internal motion of the lung and
diaphragm (measured by ultrasound);
g) Development of new methods for the functional and morphometric analysis of healthy and
emphysematous lung by Computed Tomography (CT)
h) Three-dimensional echography and computer-aided surgery.
Other research fields include development and validation of innovative technologies for quantitative analysis
of human motion with diverse applications in biology and medicine: respiration, rehabilitation, recovery of
motor function, morphological analysis of the body surface, computer aided surgery.
