21 ottobre 1805: Horatio Nelson, “Commander-in-Chief “ della
flotta inglese del Mediterraneo e l’Ammiraglio Pierre Villeneuve,
a capo della flotta combinata di 18 navi francesi e 15 spagnole,
oltre alle fregate di appoggio, si affrontano a largo di
Cadice.Villeneuve aveva il vantaggio numerico ma il numero
di per se’ contava poco in un’epoca nella quale la tattica di
combattimento prevedeva sopratttutto duelli nave contro nave.
Piuttosto era la migliore capacita’ di fuoco che decideva le sorti
di una battaglia e i cannonieri inglesi, in questo campo, valevano
certamente piu dei loro avversari.
La Royal Sovereign fu la prima ad entrare in battaglia e dopo
piu di due ore di aspro combattimento, quasi ridotta ad un
relitto, senza i suoi tre alberi e tutte le manovre e le vele
distrutte, costrinse la Santa Ana ad ammainare la bandiera in
segno di resa.
Anche Nelson presto si trovo’nel pieno del combattimento.
Alle 12.05 la HMS Victory fu bersagliata da quattro navi
nemiche. Nelson veniva ferito da un tiratore scelto a bordo
della Redoutable di Villeneuve : ferito ed agonizzante ma
deciso a vincere la sua battaglia, Horatio Nelson ordina di
issare le bandierre per il messaggio in codice “ENGLAND
EXPECT THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY”
Seguito poco dopo dal messaggio per il close action “ENGAGE
THE ENEMY MORE CLOSELY”
L’attacco di Nelson ottenne l’effetto desiderato: alle 13.00 la
linea franco-spagnola era rotta in due parti ed alle 17.00, 11
delle 19 unita’ che formavano la retroguardia francese erano
state catturate dagli Inglesi. Nelson resta in vita fino alla fine
del combattimento, poi muore appagato per aver raggiunto lo
scopo della sua vita.
La battaglia di Trafalgar rimane il piu’ grande combattimento
navale nella storia della marina e la piu’ gloriosa vittoria nella
storia dell’Inghilterra, grazie alla quale gli Inglesi otterranno
il predominio navale sul Mediterraneo per quasi duecento anni.
