D’altra parte Paolo Salvelli convive da sempre con musica e liuteria, in quanto presidente della Fondazione Walter Stauffer, prezioso e prestigioso organismo che finanzia dalla sua istituzione iniziative di alto profilo nei due settori strategici per la vita culturale di Cremona. Stimato notaio iscritto al ruolo dal 1968, il professionista cremonese ha sovente dato prova di spiccate doti di mediazione, qualità che non deve mancare a chi è chiamato a coordinare la commissione di un premio così importante. In fact, Paolo Salvelli has always been intimately involved with both music and violin making as President of the Walter Stauffer Foundation, a prominent and prestigious organization that sponsors highprofile initiatives in these two strategic sectors of Cremona’s cultural life. He has been a registered Notary Public since 1968 and has always shown an exceptional aptitude for mediation, an essential quality for those who are entrusted with the task of coordinating a panel of experts for the assignment of such an important award. Dopo il debutto solistico assieme a Yo-Yo Ma, ha suonato come solista sotto la direzione di Gustavo Dudamel, Christopher Hogwood, Carlo Rizzi, all’Hong Kong Arts Festival, alla Grosses Saal del Mozarteum di Salisburgo, alla Wiener Konzerthaus. Dal 2008 è docente di Violoncello presso l’Accademia “Incontri col Maestro” di Imola. Recentemente Claudio Abbado l’ha chiamato a far parte della Lucerne Festival Orchestra e dell’Orchestra Mozart. Affermatasi a soli 14 anni al Junior Wieniawski International Violin Competition di Lublino, in Polonia (primo premio ex aequo con Maxim Vengerov), da allora ha mantenuto rilievo internazionale vincendo il Concorso Paganini di Genova nel 1994 e il Concorso di Monaco di Baviera nel 1999. E’ l’unica ad aver registrato il Concerto di Beethoven con il violino “Il Cannone” di Guarneri del Gesù appartenuto a Paganini. Per questa incisione la rivista francese Diapason ha scritto che “la violinista cinese ha sbalordito l’ascoltatore sia per le capacità tecniche sia per la maturità interpretativa”. Born in China, Bin Huang is considered one of the very best of her country’s violinists. At 14 she won the Junior Wieniawski International Violin Competition in Lublin, Poland (first prize shared ex aequo with Maxim Vengerov) and since then she has been in the international spotlight, also winning the Paganini Competition in Genoa in 1994 and the Munich Competition in 1999. She is the only violinist to have recorded the Beethoven Violin Concerto with Guarneri del Gesù’s “Il Cannone” violin, which had belonged to Paganini. Regarding this recording, the French magazine, Diapason, commented that “the Chinese violinist astounds listeners with both her technical skills and her mature interpretation”. Dopo gli studi a Novosibirsk, sua città natale, si è trasferita a Londra per studiare alla Yehudi Menuhin School e al Royal College of Music. Si è esibita come solista in sedi prestigiose come Wigmore Hall di Londra, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Barbican e Royal Festival Hall. Ha eseguito musica da camera con star del calibro di Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Shlomo Mintz. After completing her studies in Novosibirsk, where she was born, she moved to London to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Royal College of Music. She has played as a soloist in prestigious venues like Wigmore Hall in London, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall. She has performed chamber music with celebrities like Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet and Shlomo Mintz. In recent years she has been invited as “Guest Concertmaster” by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Radio Sinfonie Berlin. Born in Holland, Vladimir Mendelssohn teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, in Rotterdam and at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. He received his music training in Bucharest, where he won prestigious viola and composition contests and, since then, he has also sat on various international jury panels. As a composer, he has developed an interesting lexicon, combining innovation with the classical and romantic tradition. He has also made numerous recordings and he teaches much appreciated master classes all over Europe. As a player he has performed at important festivals, including the one established and directed by Gidon Kremer and the Lockenhaussen Dmitry Sitkovetsky Wasa Festival. Born in Kuwait of German-Egyptian parents, Nabil Sheata, now resides in Germany. He started playing music when he was six years old, when his mother taught him to play the piano. He then studied double bass in Berlin, and in 2003 he was contacted by Daniel Barenboim and offered the position of first bassist at the Unter den Linden Staatsoper. In the following year, he was first bassist in the Berliner Philharmoniker, the world’s most renowned orchestra. He teaches master classes all over the world and has performed as soloist in numerous concerts and recordings. He has taught at the Hochschule in Munich since 2007. From 1978 to 1981 he was involved in the restoration works at the ateliers of maestros J.Pavie and C. Biteur in Orléans, following which he moved to Paris. From 1981 to 1984 he restored bows for the Parisian instrument makers F. & S. Boyer and E. Vatelot. In 1984 he opened his own atelier in Montpellier, in the south of France, dedicating himself to the construction of new stringed instruments and the restoration of both ancient and modern instruments. Since then, he has carried out a series of important assignments for prominent US instrument making associations. A British native, David Rattray, for thirty years he has been curator of the instruments of the Royal Academy of Music of London, of which he is honorary member and curator of the Becket and Fridart collection. He frequently participates in prestigious initiatives linked to instrument making, as curator of exhibitions, conference speaker and maker of copies of important ancient instruments, such as the Guarneri del Gesù’s “The Cannon” violin, which once belonged to Paganini. He is the author of numerous publications, invariably lauded by expert critics, including the volumes entitled Instrument Making in Scotland 1750-1950 and Masterpieces of Italian Instrument Making 1620 -1850, published in 1991 and now in the second edition. Ha studiato organo, pianoforte e composizione, e svolge una intensa attività come direttore di gruppi corali. Ha avuto vari incarichi professionali: Coordinatore dei Corsi Professionali nel Progetto Intesa Stato/Regione, Coordinatore Stage presso le botteghe di liuteria di Cremona, Presidente Gruppo Liutai della Provincia di Cremona della Confartigianato, Presidente del Consorzio Liutai “A. Stradivari” Cremona. A native of Cremona, Giorgio Scolari attended the International School for Stringed Instrument Making in his city, under the direction of the Maestros P. Sgarabotto and G. B. Morassi, from which he graduated in 1970. Since 1974 he has taught in the laboratory of the same school. Currently, he is the proprietor of an atelier in Cremona, in partnership with his brother Daniele. He has studied organ, piano and composition, and is very active as director of various choirs. He has been Coordinator of the Professional Courses in the Intesa - State/Region Project, Coordinator of Internships at Cremonese instrument making workshops, President of the Confartigianato Violin Makers Group of the Province of Cremona and President of the “A. Stradivari” Instrument Makers Consortium of Cremona. Nato a Praga, Jan Baptista Špidlen, unico figlio del liutaio Premysl O. Špidlen, dalla prima infanzia ha trascorso molto tempo nel laboratorio del padre acquisendo familiarità con gli strumenti ad arco. Born in Prague, Jan Baptista Špidlen, the only son of the violin maker Premysl O. Špidlen spent lots of time in his father’s workshop as a child and developed an unusual familiarity with stringed instruments. His parents encouraged his interest in music and he began playing the violin at the age of five. He also studied wood sculpting at the Art and Industrial School of Prague and learned the fundamentals of instrument making at the Mittenwald School, in Germany. In 2003 he won the gold medal for the violin at the International Triennial Competition. He currently works with his father in Prague.
