Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who completes the course successfully will be able to use the basic tools for describing and classifying igneous and metamorphic
rocks. The student will also be introduced to the knowledge of the main processes of genesis and evolution of rocks and the relationship
between magmatism / metamorphism and plate tectonics. LABORATORY The student who completes the laboratory course successfully will be
able to use the optical microscope for describing and classifying the igneous (plutonic and volcanic) and metamorphic rocks.
Assessment criteria of knowledge

Syllabus
Introduction to the formation of the Solar System and the Earth-Moon system. The internal structure of the Earth. Gradients of pressure and
temperature inside the Earth. Plate tectonics. The chemical composition of the Earth and its main reservoirs. The rock cycle and the main
petrogenetic processes. Chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks. Structure and physical properties of magmas. The processes of
differentiation of magmas. Phase diagrams for one, two and three component systems. The classification of igneous rocks. Petrogenesis of
basalts and granitoid rocks. Metamorphic rocks: definition of metamorphism, limits and factors of metamorphism, types of metamorphism,
protoliths, metamorphic grade and facies, the metamorphic reactions, chemographic diagrams. The classification of metamorphic rocks.
Interpretation and classification of igneous and metamorphic rocks under the petrography microscope (laboratory).
