Learning outcomes
Knowledge
The student who successfully completes the course will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of main events and processes in economic
history, from 17th to the end of the 20th century; will be able to understand the passage from the pre-industrial world at industrialized society
from the English Industrial Revolution to the so called ‘Third Industrial Revolution’; will be able to investigate the comparison between the
several development systems; will be able to ascertain the complexity of the historical events and processes, the multiplicity of the causes,
effects and often explanations supplied by historians.
Assessment criteria of knowledge
- The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents using the appropriate terminology. - The
student must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course material (to trace the economic, political and social dynamics at the basis
of the change from the rural economy to industrialization, starting from England up to the development of the so called ‘Late Comer Countries’)
and be able to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. - The student must be able will be able to ascertain the
complexity of the historical events and processes, the multiplicity of the causes, effects and often explanations supplied by historians.

Syllabus
After going back to the origin and development of the capitalistic economic system, the course will be focused on the topic of the industrial
revolution and the reasons why it took place in Europe and in particular in England. The aim is to make understand the historical, economic,
social and cultural processes which brought about the success of ‘western’ economies, underlining their distinctive aspects and mechanisms
and pointing out how at the beginning of 1900 their economic leadership moved from England to Germany and the United States, while the
position of the so called’ second and late comer’ countries was changing , both in absolute and relative terms. After analyzing the development
models of the prevalent countries, the study will proceed with the great transformations of 1900 up to the recent processes of economic
integration which are occurring on a world scale. For this reason basic general concepts, such as growth and development, economic cycle,
crisis and factory system will be analyzed again in a historical perspective.
