The Oedipus in All of Us life by Anna Rita Stefanelli essayist Fight for power or a metaphor of the process of foundation of sexual identity I ILLUSTRATION BY ERTE’ t is a myth, an epic poem, a tragedy, a fairy tale. The classical western version of the Oedipus myth originates from Athens in the 5th century BC but, with the proper variants, the story scheme is also diffused in Asia and Africa in the form of a legend or tale. In the plot as we know it, a king and a queen (of Thebes), after knowing from an oracle that their son one day will murder his father, try to suppress him and abandon him in the mountains with his hands and feet tied Oedipus would mean “lame foot” – but the child is rescued and adopted by the king of Corinthus. Yet, he will not escape his destiny: while going to Thebes, he has a quarrel with an old man on a chariot for rights of way and he kills him, without knowing he is king Laio, his true father. And then he will marry his mother, now a widow, as a prize for having freed the city from a terrible monster, the Sphinx, which enjoys proposing a riddle to wayfarers, whose life depends upon solving it. The right answer to the Sphinx enigma is “the man”. Oedipus is thus the prototype of the initiate and he embodies the drama of the self-consciousness that matures from the confrontationrelationship with the key parental figures. Freud, who was fascinated by the Sophocles tragedy, drew from it his intuition of the Oedipus complex, an indicator of the relation modes a child unconsciously establishes with his mother and father. According to Fromm, Oedipus is instead the drama of the fight for power between father and son.
