Church of San Nicolò
It was erected by order of Alberto III Pio in 1493
over the remains of a small pre-existing medieval
church. The cotto facade is linked to a portico that
leads to the adjacent Franciscan convent. This is a
building of outstanding architectural importance,
with paintings of considerable interest, some of the
most prized “scagliola” altar fronts in the area and
wood choir stalls dated around 1518.

35 centuries of history: the terramare, the Roman
land division, King Astolfo, Matilde di Canossa, the
Pio, the d’Este, Ciro Menotti and Manfredo Fanti, up
to modern-day Carpi.
Museum Monument to the Political and Racial
Deported
Opened in 1973, it represents a unique example
in Italy of a memorial to the Deported. Thirteen
rooms of strong emotional impact, with graffiti
by outstanding artists (Longoni, Picasso, Guttuso,
Cagli, Léger) and phrases taken from “Lettere dei
condannati a morte della Resistenza europea”
(Letters of European fighters sentenced to death).
Some showcases contain objects that once
belonged to people deported to the concentration
camps. The tour of the Museum ends in the Sala dei
Nomi, “the Room of the Names”, where the names
of more than 14,000 deportee are scratched on the
walls. Into the Cortile delle Stele; “the courtyard of
the Steles”, 16 high ferroconcrete stones report
the names of the camps where the massacres took
place during the World War II.
Castello dei ragazzi
For young people, under 16 years old.
c MUNICIPAL THEATRE
It is one of the most important historical theatres of
the Emilia Romagna. It opened its doors the 11th
August 1861, just after the proclamation of the
Italian Kingdom. The interesting theatrical season
is rich in concerts, prose and dancing shows.
g Palazzo Scacchetti (Town Vinegar Loft)
It was the residence of the Scacchetti family
(merchants of shaving hats) in the late18th century.
From the beginning of the 19th it has been
considered a real estate of the community of Carpi.
It houses today the Municipal ACETAIA
h Piazzale Re Astolfo
It has been the town centre since the beginning of the
16th century. Today, it is still the centre of the medieval
city, onto which face the Sagra, the Palazzo dei Pio, the
ancient Castelvecchio (15th century Pio residence), an
the Loria factory, where straw hats were once made
and which is now the civic library (J).
k La Sagra - THE PARISH CHURCH
S. Maria in Castello
It is the city’s oldest church and is included in
the European circuit of Romanesque buildings.
According with the tradition it was created in
the 752 A.D. by the Lombard king Astolfo. It was
reconstructed in the roman style during the 11th
century and subsequently modified by Alberto III Pio
in the present-day renaissance appearance.
The church was built in the present form in 1681, but
a monastery already existed since the 3rd century.
The construction of the building ended in the 8th
century, but the facade remained unfinished. The
interior is constituted of a single nave with transepts
and four little chapels on the sides.
s FORMER SYnagogUE
During the 15th century the Jewish community
set up home in the buildings overlooking the small
“Giulio Rovighi” street; in 1719 the ghetto was
instituted. Today there are two synagogues in Carpi:
the first one is into the attics of the palace over the
Portico del Grano, the second one, designed by the
architect Achille Sammarini, has a little monumental
access on/over the street.
t
Piazza Garibaldi
With porticos on three sides, has always been know
as “la piazzetta” and for a long time hosted the city’s
agricultural and fruit and vegetable market. The
buildings are in prevalence nineteenth-century but
the residences in the oriental side are particularly
interesting in their architecture/the
architecture of the residences in the oriental side is
particularly interesting.

This porch was realised at the beginning of the 16th
century and it was probably based on a project of
Baldassarre Peruzzi. It owe its name to the existence,
since the 19th century, of the cereals market.

b Palazzo dei Pio
It shows today mostly the Renaissance appearance
wished/required by Alberto III Pio, the last prince of
Carpi, at the beginning of the 16th century. A fortress
already existed in the 11th century, at the time of Matilde
di Canossa, complete with defensive structure. Over
two centuries the Pio family transformed the ancient
castle into an exclusive modern palace developed
around the Honour court/courtyard that, together with
the Passerino tower (1320), the Torrione degli Spagnoli
(1440-1450), and the Uccelliera (1480), represents one
of the most interesting architectures of the Palace. The
inner rooms are richly decorated with frescos dating
between the 15th and the 16th centuries.
52 arcades form this long porch. The central arch,
named “il Voltone” (the great vault), is the biggest
one and the most decorated.

d CATHEDRAL OF Assunta
The building of the cathedral began in 1515 by order of
Alberto III Pio who wanted to build the Collegiata in the
new town centre. The building site was soon interrupted
because of the Pio’s banishment, and the project came to
an end just at the end of the end of the 19th century. The
appearance of the building feels the effects of this long
period of construction; the size is that of the 16th century
required by Alberto III, who based the plan of the church
on the St. Peter in Rome: the interior is wide with a nave
and two aisles, the façade shows baroque patterns.
The dome is seventeenth-century, while the walls had
been decorated in the neoclassical style during the 19th
century. The present-day decoration in the renaissance
style had been realised from 1873 up to 1893.
CARPI
a Piazza dei Martiri
It is the centre and the heart of the modern city. In
terms of size, it ranks the third in Italy (about 15,000
sq m) and, whit its plain and calm monumentality,
it brings back to the Emilian Renaissance.
