Maltese Falcon, Squali e Antara. Era così PERINI NAVI CUP: ACT Il Maltese Falcon, Squall and Antara. That's how the final rankings for the second edition of the Perini Navi Cup read. It doesn't take much to sum up the very best of the competitive side of an event that saw no less than 14 splendid sailing yachts built by the famous Viareggio yard sail into the waters of Porto Rotondo. That's for the simple reason that the Perini Navi Cup isn't a regatta in the strictest sense of the word. You just have to take a short stroll along the dockside to realise that. What a magnificent sight! Absolutely unique of its kind. It was impossible not to be aware that this really was something special. A glance in the direction of Porto Rotondo confirmed that. The entire horizon was broken up by a long dense line of masts that gave us the feeling that just beyond them was a forest of aluminlum and carbon tree trunks. Trunks that instead of branches would have an intricate web of rigglng. A surreal and magica1thought. But then, when Maltese Falcon slld into sight, that feeling became a reallty. Regal and majestlc, the futuristic three-master seemed to have come from a far-off world. She made us feel like the I In alto a slnlstra, le prue d l Squall e (dietro) Antara. Quest'ultimo si è reso protagonista, nel secondo giorno di regata, di una rimonta entusia- Poiyneslans must have felt when they saw James Cook's Endeavour glide towards them for the first tirne. The same spirit of adventure that spurr* Cook to explore unmapped territories has pushed Tom Perkins, the owner of the stunnlng 8&rnetre, to really push the boundaries of the whole yachting concept. And i t couid never have been any other way. Innovation and technology are the key ingredients of Perini Navi's hugely successful story, a story that has seen it rise to the posltlon of world leader with a massive 61% share of the world megasailer market. The yachts launched by the Viareggio yard al1 obey the laws of sailing physics. They proved that much two years ago at the first edition of the rally when they were really put to the test by the Sardinian Mistral. And they confirmed it once again this year when they had to cope with very light winds that really gave the crews a chance to show off every last one of thelr skilis. At sea, both Squall and Antara g a G us some spectacular moments and went al1 out to the very last minute to break Maltese Falcon's stranglehold. 0 magnificent comeback on the second day of racing. Although che started late she managed to make up that initial loss to finish ahead of the entire fleet. The sheer determination of both her owner and crew shone bright as the 88-metre came to the island of Tavolara and managed to slip in between the newly launched 45-metre Heritage, and Santa Maria, a 56-metre ketch. It was a spectacular manoeuvre that saw every single person aboard those two boats hold thelr breaths for severa1 long moments. Those same emotions surfaced once again during the gala evening that brought al1 of the participants together again in a truly celebratory mood. And whlle the sea gave Maltese I l Falcon the beautiful Richard Mille-designed trophy, ashore the Perini Navi Cup was most definite1 won by al1 14 yachts that took part 'This is a unique event because it brings together such a large number of yachts built by a unique yard: said Perini Navi # CE0 Giancarlo Ragnetti. 'But I it's more than just a rally. It's a family reunion. This very intimate atmosphere makes the Perini Navy Cup dlfferent from any other event really." Ashore the presence of a s G d i d Rolls Royce and the ! support of prestigious sponsors, such as Aurora Assicurazioni, Credlt Suisse and Richard Mille, al1 lent the event a very special air. Aided and abetted, of course, by the skilful organisation of the Yacht Club Porto Rotondo and Vela &Vino. I
