FINLANDIA, PER ME UN PAESE COSI’ LONTANO, UNA GENTE COSI’ VICINA di Marcello Poli Nel maggio di due anni fa, in una giornata che proprio al momento della premiazione finale ci aveva riservato la pioggia, ammainammo la bandiera della Federazione dal pennone italiano e personalmente la passai al mio amico di vecchia data, Markku Mähönen, perché la portasse in Finlandia e la utilizzasse in occasione del prossimo evento EIWC. Originariamente l’appuntamento 2014 era stato pianificato in Germania, ma il Direttivo della Federazione, con il consenso del Club tedesco DWZRV, aveva volentieri acconsentito a che la Finlandia la rimpiazzasse, nell’idea di poter far coincidere temporalmente la manifestazione con il WDS, che si sarebbe tenuto ad Helsinki ad agosto 2014. Una soluzione simile a quella collaudata con successo nel 2010 in Danimarca. Il fatto che, alla prova dei fatti, questa soluzione non si sia dimostrata praticabile e che il Club finlandese SIRL abbia dovuto riprogrammare l’evento in altra data (metà giugno) ed in altro luogo (Mustiala) aveva creato qualche tensione, o meglio incomprensione. Non che vi fossero dubbi sulla capacità degli amici finlandesi di assolvere al compito di cui si erano fatti carico, ma piuttosto perplessità sul fatto che proprietari di IW di tutta Europa fossero disponibili ad intraprendere per ben due volte nel giro di un paio di mesi un viaggio così lungo, per prendere parte sia all’evento EIWC, che all’Esposizione Mondiale, con il rischio di un evento poco partecipato. Perché la Finlandia, per chi abiti al Sud o al Centro dell’Europa, non è esattamente dietro l’angolo ed un viaggio in auto può essere stressante, non tanto per gli umani, quanto per i cani al seguito. Io amo partecipare con i miei cani al Raduno biennale EIWC, lo considero un appuntamento più qualificato e gratificante di un WDS, e lo ho fatto in ogni edizione dal 2002 in poi. Quest’anno ho riflettuto molto prima di rinunciarvi, ma fra viaggi di andata e di ritorno e permanenza a Mustiala per prendere parte a tutti gli appuntamenti in programma, questo avrebbe voluto dire, per i cani che avessi portato, stare 10 giorni fuori casa, vivendoli quasi tutti a bordo di un’auto: un sacrificio troppo grande per loro! Ma certamente volevo essere presente, anche senza cani. Così, con mia moglie e una coppia di amici, abbiamo deciso di volare fino ad Helsinki e, ritrovatici qui in aeroporto con altri frequentatori abituali dell’evento, amici provenienti da Germania e Canada. Abbiamo infine raggiunto l’albergo di Forssa, dove molte altre persone che condividono la nostra passione avevano trovato ospitalità. Devo dire che è stato abbastanza scioccante partire dal mio Paese e poi dall’aeroporto di Monaco di Baviera in giornate assolate (forse peraltro le uniche che ci riservato questa estate) e con una temperatura di 35 gradi e trovare ad Helsinki la pioggia e soli 12 gradi. Così il clima è rimasto per i primi giorni del nostro viaggio, ma ciò non è stato di grande disturbo, dal momento che al venerdì avrei dovuto attendere alle riunioni del Consiglio Direttivo ed all’Assemblea Generale dell’EIWC e che al sabato il Congresso ci riservava un programma molto interessante: per me, quindi, nessun evento all’aperto. A questi primi appuntamenti istituzionali non ha purtroppo potuto essere presente la nostra Presidente Pernille Monberg, causa alcuni problemi di salute che ho poi constatato, avendo potuto incontrarla a Donaueschingen ad inizio agosto, ha fortunatamente superato in modo positivo. E, mancando all’appuntamento anche la vice Presidente Monette Daubenfeld, è toccato ad Julie Hübner, Segretaria peraltro ancora ad interim, il compito di coordinare le riunioni. Devo dire onestamente che in questo è stata bravissima: è proprio il suo mestiere! La riunione del Consiglio Direttivo è stata molto proficua: del resto il clima all’interno di questo organismo è oggi ottimale, come constatato anche in occasione dell’incontro di Birmingham, nel marzo scorso. La soddisfazione per me maggiore è giunta in occasione dell’Assemblea Generale ed in particolare dall’intervento della rappresentante dell’IWC of America, Birgitta Stolpe. A Birmingham infatti il Consiglio Direttivo aveva deciso di promuovere l’adesione all’EIWC, quali membri osservatori, anche di Club di nazioni diverse da quelle sotto la giurisdizione dell’FCI. Pur con i limiti e le difficoltà derivanti dall’applicazione del nostro statuto, infatti, riteniamo che le finalità di promozione e di tutela della razza, che la Federazione persegue, siano condivisibili ad un livello più ampio, cioè anche da quei Club che, pur attenendosi ad uno standard di razza diverso (per sola qualche parola), hanno a cuore il presente ed il futuro della razza. Sarebbe del resto piuttosto ridicolo che, pur potendo ad esempio allevare in Europa con cani registrati dai Kennel Club inglese, americano, canadese o australiano, ci si debba limitare nel collaborare con Club di quelle nazioni su temi come il benessere animale o la formazione degli esperti giudici. All’invito in tal senso avanzato nel marzo scorso dall’EIWC sono giunte tante risposte positive, dalla Scozia, dall’Australia, dalla Nuova Zelanda ed anche dall’America. Birgitta ha volato fino in Finlandia proprio per testimoniare, con parole molto significative, di questo interesse e confermare la disponibilità alla piena collaborazione da parte dell’IWC of America. Oggi abbiamo così un EIWC più forte, ampia e rappresentativa. L’Assemblea ha anche approvato all’unanimità un rendiconto finanziario in salute e confermato nel proprio ruolo tutti i membri del Consiglio Direttivo che erano in scadenza di mandato. Il Congresso, organizzato al sabato nell’auditorium del centro scolastico di Mustiala, presentava un programma focalizzato soprattutto su argomenti di natura sanitaria. I relatori non hanno di certo tradito le attese del folto pubblico presente: Seppo Lamberg ha affrontato il tema “Cuore, risultati degli studi sulla DCM fatti in Finlandia”; il titolo dell’intervento di Elina Pietilä era “Le più comuni malattie oculistiche trovati negli Irish Wolfhound. Risultati dalla Finlandia”; l’inglese Angela Bodey ha parlato di “La polmonite negli Irish Wolfhounds”, mentre infine Riitta Niemelä ha concluso illustrando “Il database del Kennel Club finlandese ed il suo utilizzo”, testimoniando quali formidabili strumenti siano a disposizione degli allevatori finlandesi per poter allevare con coscienza e quale sia il livello di collaborazione di questi ultimi al fine di alimentare il database con le informazioni necessarie. Wolfgang Müller ha poi presentato, come da tradizione, il programma di massima del prossimo appuntamento, fra due anni in Germania, vicino a Göttingen. La serata si è conclusa con la fantastica Cena di Gala al “Capannone di Gala”. La partecipazione è stata così numerosa che eravamo stipati quasi come aringhe nel barile. Aldilà della qualità del cibo, gli ospiti hanno sicuramente apprezzato la fantastica band che si è esibita per allietare la cena. La verve dei suonatori è stata tale che, finito di mangiare, la gente ha trovato comunque modo e liberato spazio sufficiente per scatenarsi nel ballo. Alla domenica mattina una giornata finalmente di sole ha accolto i partecipanti al Raduno EIWC, che celebrava anche il 45mo anniversario dalla fondazione del Club finlandese. Se, per i motivi che ho illustrato in apertura di questo articolo, vi erano dubbi su di un’adeguata partecipazione alla manifestazione, la grande mobilitazione dei proprietari finlandesi ha contribuito a demolirli: 265 cani iscritti, 4 volte quelli che sarebbero poi stati presenti all’Esposizione Mondiale Nessuno fra di noi a bordo ring ricordava una così ampia competizione nella nostra razza. Se, come è ovvio, la quota largamente preponderante proveniva dal Paese ospitante, l’internazionalità della manifestazione era però garantita dalla presenza di cani di altre 10 Nazioni, come Russia, Germania, Olanda, Norvegia, Ungheria, ecc.. La giuria era composta da esperti allevatori di indubbia reputazione: Ian Finney (Gulliagh ‐ Northern Ireland) era chiamato a giudicare i soggetti più giovani, Louise Pinkney (Hydebeck – England) i maschi adulti, Jim Behan (Bearnabui – Ireland) le femmine adulte. Jim, Presidente dell’IW Club of Ireland, così come dell’EIWC, è stato anche chiamato a scegliere il soggetto BOB. Leggendo i risultati finali, devo dire che i tre esperti hanno graduato i propri giudizi con criteri diversi, dove Louise Pinkney si è dimostrata per certo più severa nell’attribuzione delle qualifiche. Solo al 36% dei cani da lei esaminati ha attribuito la qualifica di “eccellente”, al 12% il “molto buono”, al 16% il “buono”, ancora al 16% il “sufficiente”, mentre ben il 20% dei cani è stato squalificato! Anche in questo caso devo fare i miei complimenti agli amici finlandesi per la loro sportività. Abituato alle esposizioni in Italia (ma non solo in Italia), dove assegnando ad un cane la qualifica di “molto buono” il giudice è quasi certo di andare incontro alle rimostranze dell’espositore, ho molto apprezzato il modo in cui i proprietari hanno tranquillamente accettato le decisioni degli esperti, anche quando per nulla benevole. La palma del miglior soggetto della giornata è andata alla Multi Ch. Doscarta Afrodite, una splendida femmina di 6 anni di proprietà di Kaija Ahola Kimola, mentre miglior soggetto di sesso opposto è risultato essere Always My Bryan Roan Inish, due anni appena compiuti, di proprietà di un personaggio che con il podio ai Raduni EIWC ha molta dimestichezza, anzi vi è abbonato: Conny Fernhout‐Schildt. Dicevo del mio rammarico per non aver potuto portare cani con me: ho avuto però la fortuna ed il privilegio di poter presentare lo stesso un soggetto del nostro allevamento, Christabel dei Mangialupi, di 6 mesi, proprietaria Pia Virta, che alla sua prima esperienza nei ring ha dimostrato una grande personalità ed è stata infine scelta quale Best Puppy in Show fra i 18 soggetti in competizione. E’ stata questa una grande soddisfazione per me, a coronamento di un bellissimo ed interessante week‐end lungo, dove ho avuto ancora una volta l’opportunità di incontrare amici provenienti da tutte le parti del mondo che condividono la passione per questa splendida razza e di poter toccare con mano, una volta di più, la grande ospitalità, la professionalità e la preparazione degli amici finlandesi. Complimenti e grazie di tutto, da parte mia e di tutto il Direttivo EIWC, al Presidente del SIRL Juha Sätäla ed al suo affiatato team, a Tuula Savolainen, a Markku Mähönen; grazie agli amici di tutto il mondo, dal Giappone agli Stati Uniti, che sono intervenuti. FINLAND, A DISTANT COUNTRY, FRIENDLY PEOPLE by Marcello Poli Two years ago in May, on a day in which it rained just as the final awards ceremony was taking place, we lowered the Federation flag from the Italian mast and I personally handed it to my long‐standing friend, Markku Mähönen, so he could take it to Finland and use it at the next EIWC event. The 2014 event had originally been planned to take place in Germany, but the Federation’s Comitttee, with the consent of the German club DWZRV, had willingly agreed to have it take place in Finland, so that the event could coincide with the WDS, which was due to be held in Helsinki in August 2014. A similar arrangement to that successfully carried out in Denmark in 2010. The fact that this solution proved impracticable to implement and that the Finnish Club SIRL had to reschedule the event on another date (mid‐June) and location (Mustiala) had created some tension, or rather incomprehension. There were no doubts around our Finnish friends’ capacity to carry out the task, but rather concern as to whether the owners of IW throughout Europe would be willing to undertake such a long trip twice within the space of a few months, to take part both in the EIWC event and the World Show, with the risk of an event with a few participants. Finland, for those living in Southern or Central Europe, is not exactly around the corner and a car journey can be stressful, not so much for humans but for the dogs accompanying them. I love taking part with my dogs in the twice‐yearly EIWC Specialty, I believe it is a higher level and more gratifying event than a WDS, and I have taken part in every edition since 2002. This year I reflected long and hard before deciding not to go, but the return trips and stays in Mustiala to take part in all the scheduled events would have meant 10 days away from home for the dogs, most of them spent in a car: too much of a sacrifice for them! But of course I wanted to attend, even without the dogs. So, with my wife and a couple of friends, I decided to fly to Helsinki, where we met up at the airport with other regular visitors to the event , friends from Germany and Canada. We finally reached the hotel in Forssa, where many other people who share our passion were staying. I have to say that it was quite shocking to leave my country and then Munich airport on sunny days (perhaps the only ones of this summer) with a temperature of 35 degrees and find a rainy Helsinki with a temperature of just 12 degrees. The weather remained the same for the first few days of our trip, but it caused no great trouble, since on the Friday I would have had to attend the meetings of the Board and the Ruling Council of the EIWC and on Saturday the Congress had a really interesting programme scheduled: therefore, no open‐air events for me. Our Chairman, Pernille Monberg, was unable to attend the initial institutional events due to health problems. I am glad to say that she is now fully recovered, having personally met her in Donaueschingen in early August. Vice President, Monette Daubenfeld, was also absent and so the task of coordinating the meetings fell upon Julie Hübner, currently interim Secretary. She did an excellent job: she is cut out for it! The Board meeting was a great success: the climate within the body is excellent, as I was able to see for myself at the Birmingham meeting last March. The greatest satisfaction for me was at the Rlung Council and particularly the talk given by representative of the IWC of America Birgitta Stolpe. In Birmingham, the Board had decided to widen the membership to EIWC to Clubs from different countries other than those under the FCI jurisdiction as observer members. Despite the limits and difficulties deriving from the application of our by‐laws, we believe that the purposes of promoting and protecting the breed, which is the Federation’s aim, can be shared at a wider level, including by those Clubs which, while adhering to a different breed standard (in terms of just a few words), want the best for the present and future of the breed. It would be quite ridiculous that, though being able to breed for example in Europe with dogs registered by the English, American, Canadian or Australian Kennel Clubs, we have to limit ourselves to working with the Clubs from those countries only on themes like animal welfare or education of the expert judges. The invitation proposed by the EIWC in that sense last March was met by many positive responses from Scotland, Australia, New Zealand and also from America. Birgitta flew as far as Finland specifically to bear witness to this interest with very meaningful words, and confirm the full cooperation of the IWC of America. Today, as a result, EIWC is stronger, larger and more representative. The Assembly also unanimously approved a healthy financial statement and confirmed all the members of the Board whose office term was expiring. The Congress, organized on the Saturday in the auditorium of the school of Mustiala, had a programme focused mainly on health issues. The speakers lived up to the expectations of the large audience attending: Seppo Lamberg dealt with the topic “Heart, DCM Results of the study made in Finland”; Elina Pietilä gave a talk entitled “The most common eye disorders found in Irish Wolfhounds. Results from Finland”; Angela Bodey, from the UK, spoke about “Pneumonia in Irish wolfhounds”, while Riitta Niemelä ended illustrating “Finnish Kennel Clubs breeding database and its use”, bearing witness to the formidable tools available to Finnish breeders to breed conscientiously and to the level of cooperation of the latter to provide the database with the necessary information. In keeping with tradition, Wolfgang Müller presented the overall programme of the next event, which is to take place in two years time in Germany, close to Göttingen. The evening ended with the fantastic Gala Dinner at “Gala Barn”. The participation was so numerous that we were almost packed like herrings in a barrel. Besides the quality of the food, the guests appreciated the great band who accompanied the dinner. The verve of the players was such that, having finished the meal, the people found enough space to dance. The participants in the 45years Specialty Show/EIWC Show were greeted by a sunny day on the Sunday morning. If, for the reasons which I set out in the opening lines of this article, there were any doubts regarding an adequate participation in the event, the large‐scale mobilization of the Finnish owners contributed to demolishing them: 265 registered dogs, 4 times the number that would be present at the WDS! None of us ringsiders could remember such an extensive competition for our breed. If, as is obvious, the large majority came from the host country, the international dimension of the event was guaranteed by the presence of dogs from another 10 countries. The jury was made up of expert breeders of unquestionable reputation: Ian Finney (Gulliagh ‐ Northern Ireland) judged the younger dogs, Louise Pinkney (Hydebeck – England) the male adults, Jim Behan (Bearnabui – Ireland) the female adults. Jim, President of the IW Club of Ireland, and also of EIWC, also chose the BOB hound. Reading the final results, I have to say that the three experts gave their judgements with different criteria, where Louise Pinkney proved to be the strictest in attributing the qualifications. Just 36% of the houds she judged awarded the graduation of “excellent”, 12% “very good”, 16% “good”, again 16% “sufficient”, while 20% of the hounds were disqualified! In this case, too, I have to compliment my Finnish friends for their sportiness. Being accustomed to exhibitions in Italy (but not only in Italy), where if the judge assigns a dog the qualification of “very good” he is almost certain of complaints from the exhibitor, I very much appreciated the way in which the owners quietly accepted the decisions of the experts, even when they were by no means benevolent. Best dog of the day went to Multi Ch. Doscarta Afrodite, a magnificent 6 year old female belonging to Kaija Ahola Kimola, while best male went to Always My Bryan Roan Inish, who was just gone two, belonging to Conny Fernhout‐Schildt, who is no stranger to being on the podium at the EIWC Specialties. As I mentioned before, I was disappointed I had not brought my own dogs with me; however, I was fortunate and privileged enough to be able to show a dog from our kennel, 6‐month old Christabel dei Mangialupi, belonging to Pia Virta, who demonstrated a great personality at her first experience in the ring and was awarded Best Puppy in Show among the 18 in competition. This was a great satisfaction for me, crowning a magnificent and interesting long‐weekend, in which I had the opportunity once again to meet friends from all over the world who share the passion for this magnificent breed and to experience, once more, the great hospitality, professionalism and competence of our Finnish friends.
