Piemonte is an ideal location for any event. One just has to consider the natural heritage of the region matched with the latest generation congress centres and accommodation structures, period palaces and historic residences that frame conventions taking place along the riverside. Thousands of roads lead to enticing flavours and art and the area is easily reached by convenient international air connections. And then there is Torino, a city capable of uniting the functionality of a modern metropolis with an urban fabric rich in culture, architecture and environment. The XX Olympic Winter Games gave a great boost to this sector. At the end of the games, the city inherited futuristic structures like the Oval Lingotto, built to host speed skating and converted into 20,000 square metres of exhibition space, and the Olympic Palasport, constructed for ice hockey but destined to become one of the most advanced event centres in Europe. The estimates computed by the Osservatorio Congressuale del Piemonte, in collaboration with the convention bureau present in the territory and the local tourist boards, register 700 meeting rooms of which 20 have a capacity of over 500 seats. On equal ground are hotel accommodations with 770 hotels and a significant increase in the number of rooms and beds as well as in the amount of renovated or newly constructed sites. All this to stay in line with the needs of MICE clientele. The efforts undergone so far have already given their first important results, with statistics recording a 30% increase in participants in 2005 with respect to the previous year. We plan on continuing to work and invest so that Piemonte becomes ever more qualified and competitive as a congress destination, able to offer the highest quality reception. For this reason, the Strategic Plan for Regional Tourism gives a primary role to this market through targeted activity like participation in Italia for Events, the new initiative that brings the nation’s entire congressional tourism offer under one brand. Besides numerous promotional activities, the project schedules action on a local level such as training, updating and the completion of a system for mapping meeting and incentive services, soon to be usable on the web. We look forward to seeing you in Torino and Piemonte, Giuliana Manica Tourism Councillor Piemonte Region REG PIEM_Brochure ING New 06 19-12-2006 10:57 Pagina 4 Why Torino The congress destinations in Piemonte, in particular Torino and Lago Maggiore, have characteristics that congressional clientele especially appreciate. 1.There are numerous congress centres that range in size from medium to large with a significant amount of meeting rooms and exhibition space: Lingotto in Torino and, on the banks of Lago Maggiore, the Grand Hotel Dino in Baveno and the Palazzo dei Congressi in Stresa. These structures are well built and flexible. They can accommodate up to 2,000 participants for scientific congresses and corporate conventions. For larger conventions, plenary sessions are held in exhibit halls at the Lingotto Congress Centre or, adjacent to it, at Oval Lingotto, which was constructed for the Olympic Games. 2.The region boasts large hotels located just walking distance from the congress centres or actually within the centres like Lingotto in Torino. For the Olympics, international hotel chains opened new structures in the city, the mountains, the hills and on the banks of the lakes. 3.There are small, exclusive accommodations, where guests feel privileged, which are appropriate for high-level meetings. 4.The efficient transportation system is made up of an airport well-connected with Europe and Italy, the nearby hub in Milano Malpensa, high-speed trains, and the underground railway. This system is even stronger today due to significant investments made recently. 5.Qualified professionals have demonstrated to the world that they know how to organise complex events with precision and creativity. 6.Once the capital of Italy, the region was host to the Country’s court and now possesses its rich artistic and historic inheritance including castles, royal palaces, antique villas, museums, and art collections. These treasures are available for those who wish to organise exclusive visits and unforgettable events. 7.The fascinating natural environment is another draw to the region. Conventions and original incentive travels can be created here with the help of professionals who know how to meet the needs of international clients and who are familiar with the Alps, the hills rich in grapevines and truffles, and the great lakes. 8.A great push toward innovation is demonstrated by research and experimentation centres, universities, international schools, state-of-the-art industries, hospitals, important designers and innumerable international relations. 9.The region has a very rich cuisine with decisive tastes and sumptuous flavours. Local products include cheese, truffles, stuffed pasta, rice, selected meat and chocolate. Its 147 exceptional wines are appreciated around the world and include Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato. 10.The Torino Convention Bureau and the Lago Maggiore Conference are two organizations that represent selected operators which are supported by the institutions and that provide all of the information on the territory as well as the most appropriate solutions for the needs of the clients at no cost. Both have great organizational skills and a strong desire to excel in the convention sector. There are numerous ski resorts, paradise for those who love winter sports and nature. These resorts are located in the impressive Alpine mountains, that occupy 41% of the regional territory and were hosts to the Olympic Winter Games in 2006. The region is well-known internationally for its production of high-quality wines and gastronomic delights. Piemonte is also a flat country, in fact it is the European capital of rice. It is also a land of great lakes, namely Lago Maggiore and Lago d’Orta, two vast blue mirrors, that occupy the northeast part of the region. However, these incredible natural attractions of Piemonte should not detract from the important artistic-cultural heritage that includes magnificent mansions, royal residences, churches, castles, cities with thermal springs, and destinations for religious tourism. Such charms unveil the side of Piemonte that is able to satisfy the needs of even the most discerning travellers. • Climate: Summer highs 27-30° C – Winter highs 5-9° C • Custom procedures: Schengen citizens: free circulation. Pinerolo It is called the “horse city” because it houses the National Museum of Calvary Weapons and because it has always been the site of the Nizza Cavalry battalion. The Duomo and the historic buildings in the city are worth seeing. A short distance from the city is the fort of Fenestrelle, that extends for nearly 5 kilometres. Ivrea The city is famous for its three-day carnival where citizens stage a battle fought with oranges. Castles abound in and around the city which merit a visit: the castles of Ivrea, Aglié, Masino and Borgomasino. There is also the traditional place of worship and devotion, the Sacro Monte di Belmonte, which UNESCO named a World Heritage Site. NATURE AND SURROUNDINGS Bardonecchia Bardonecchia is one of the major ski centres in Piemonte with 150 km of slopes alongside the facilities in Melezet, Jafferau and Colomion-Campo Smith: an ice-skating rink, artificial snow machines and the half-pipe created for the Winter Olympics of 2006. The Orsiera-Rocciavré Park in the upper valley of Susa is one of the biggest protected areas in the Piemonte mountains. Other natural wonders include the Parco Gran Bosco in Salbertrand and in Chianocco the Natural Reserve and special gorge called Orrido, a deep and slender incision in the limestone slopes in Susa's lower valley. Pinerolo The Pinerolo area has a fascinating geographic composition. The Rock of Cavour is a rocky mass that rises suddenly up 162 metres. Pinerolo is the gate to the Val Chisone which ends in Pragelato with the Val Troncea Park referred to as the “valley of the flowers”. Ivrea The Gran Paradiso Park is entered at Ceresole Reale. It is the number one national park in Italy having been founded as a Royal reserve for the Savoy family in 1856 in order to guarantee the survival of the ibex. Interesting routes that wind through all of the morainic hills extend from Ivrea to the entire canavese area. EATING AND DRINKING Bardonecchia Here one finds typical cuisine from Alta Valle Susa like polenta, cheese and wild game. Pinerolo On the outskirts of Pinerolo in Bricherasio, the Cantina Sociale brings together around 200 excellent wine producers. Also nearby, in Cavour, is the most important centre for apple production in Piemonte. Cavour is known as well for its production of highquality meat. Pinerolo is famous for inventing the “short” panettone. Ivrea This city is noted for its dry pastries like the torcetti of Aglié, the canestrelli of Borgofranco and the amaretti of Castellamonte. The local wines are good too, especially the white Erbaluce and the red Carema. GOLF Golf in the area goes from the 18-hole course in the hills of Avigliana to the highest 18-hole course in Europe at 2000 metres above sea level in Sestriere. Nearby, in Claviere, there is a 9-hole golf course. EATING AND DRINKING In this land, just 20 km from Alba,“Slow Food” was founded in the small town of Bra.The movement is known throughout the world and represents a way of life that focuses on the quality and pleasures of traditional cooking. One of the local food products that stands out is the Tartufo Bianco of Alba, the true king of autumn cuisine. This truffle is especially good when accompanying the great wines of the territory: Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, Roero, Moscato d’Asti, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Arneis. Courses in typical cuisine and tasting seminars are based on these products and the wine from the Region. GOLF There are a 9-hole and an 18-hole golf courses in the scenic hills of the Langhe.
