THE ULTIMATE CAR
COLLECTOR:
MAKING ONE-OFFS IN TORINO
James Glickenhaus’ long-lasting relationship with Torino skills started in 2005 when he
commissioned Pininfarina the design and built of a one-off to be inspired to the iconic
Ferrari P3/4 (chassis 0846) that was already in his collection.
Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina became the name of his dream car, a one-off based upon a
Ferrari Enzo chassis. The world-première
unveiling took place at the Pebble Beach
Concours d’Elegance in 2006. The same year the car was exhibited at the Paris Motor Show
and in 2007 he was awarded both the 1st Prize in the “Concept and Prototype Class” and
the “Best in Show” Public’s Prize at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, then
contributing to strengthen and spread the excellent Torino area’s expertise in the car
customization.
At that time a good friendship also started with Paolo Garella, former Pininfarina Special
Projects Manager, who today is still involved as Program Director to all the Scuderia
Cameron Glickenhaus’ Special Projects.
The acquisition of the Dino 206 Competizione from the the Pininfarina collection in 2007 is
the fulfillment of another of his youth’s dream. A careful preservative restoration
enabled the car to be safely driven on public roads and to return as a star to some main
international automotive events.
In 2010 Jim Glickenhaus started the development of his first racing car, the P4/5
Competizione that took part to the VLN Championship and the 24 Hours at the Nurburgring
for 2 seasons, the second of which with a hybrid system equipment. The involvement of
Torino’s companies in the project was great. A special mention goes to Podium Engineering whose partners were the founders of the Politecnico Squadra Corse – for
the
development of the KERS battery. In 2012 the P4/5 Competizione afforded the
Nordschleife in the EXP-1 Class getting the 1st position in its category and the 12th place
in the overall rank, the best result ever for a hybrid car. The car received the “Città di
Torino” patronage and was displayed at the Museo dell’Automobile in Torino.
2013 SCG003 is Jim Glickenahus’ latest project for a car suitable both for a racing and
road use. Under Paolo Garella’s supervision a new manufacturing company was funded,
Manifattura Automobili Torino (MAT), collecting the best skills in a team that designed,
developed and built a new car in approx. 20 months from scratch. Main partners to
Manifattura Automobili Torino were Lowie Vermeersch’s Granstudio for the Style and
Podium Engineering for the Engineering Development.
More than 70 people – Designers, Engineers, Specialists, Senior and Junior Mechanics
(these last ones selected at the CNOSFAP Salesiana’ School in Bra) were involved in the
Project. 490 supplier, 354 of which are Italian, offered their know-how to the Project up
to the world-première unveiling at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Two racing versions of the SCC003 car were produced until today at the Manifattura
Automobili Torino’s factory in Rivalta. Both cars took part in the 2015 VLN Championship
and the 24 Hours at the Nurburgring, involving about 60 team people of different
countries, mainly from Italy. After the 2015 24 Hours, Jim Glickenhaus received from
ADAC an award for the extraordinary results achieved in the Engineering development.
As a latest demonstration of his trust into the Italian skills, Jim Glickenhaus bought the
1972 Modulo Concept from Pininfarina in 2014 and commissioned to MAT a complex
restoration programme that will allow the car to become fully driveable.
In the last 10 years Jim Glickenhaus commissioned a long series of activities to Italian
companies and allowed both professionals and young talents to measure up against the
worldwide best automotive competitors on the most demanding tracks.
His vision on the one-offs brought work and richness to many Italian companies, thus
creating new business models and fulfilling the existing gap in the Torino racing field. With
no doubt Jim Glickenhaus deserves the title of Ambassador of the Italian Excellence in the
world.
