They come to the set the stage in Savona, as a city of art and of the great masters. The first lady is Milena Milani, artist, writer, and poetess. Having spent all of the second half of the 20th century with her art in verses and colors, she now returns to her native city to bring the Fondazione Museo di Arte Contemporanea, a foundation for contemporary art, to life in memory of her life-long companion, Carlo Cardazzo, one of Italy’s most famous gallery owners. The works which will be shown in Palazzo Gavotti, come from her own private collection. They feature the greatest artists of the twentieth century—Alexander Calder, Giorgio de Chirico, Lucio Fontana, René Magritte, Joan Mirò, Pablo Picasso, Man Ray, Cy Twombly, just to name a few. As a writer, she created a scandal with her novel, La ragazza di nome Giulio, which sentenced her to house arrest for having offended common sensitivities. But that was the seventies, and the book was a huge success abroad. In Italy the debate involved the major intellectuals of the times, among whom was Giuseppe Ungaretti, who took her side. Now over ninety years old, she is actively producing highly colored ceramics. The second lady of Savona’s renaissance is Heike Arndt. She escaped from East Germany at the tender age of sixteen to begin a voyage which took her to every corner of the world to satisfy her thirst for life styles and way to make art that was different from that which she had learned in her native land. And it was in Albisola where her passion for pottery matured. She became aware of her own art under the guidance of Ansgar Elde, Tulio Mazotti, Sandro Lorenzini, Alfredo Meconi of the famous Stamperia del Bostrico, and other artists from Albisola. Francesca Traverso Contemporanea di Lissone, in Lombardy, is dedicating an exhibition, Where is home? just to her, which is open until October 10. The title refers both to the search for a physical place in which to feel safe, and to the existentialist interrogation to which Arndt tries to find an answer through artistic expression. Cosmopolitan by trade, Arndt answers those who ask her where is her home, that “the home that is common to us all, is the world. It is not that little territory which often surrounds us, drawing the smallest radius possible around us.” At last analysis seeing that our century has globalization among its most distinctive traits, the artist cannot help but confront this theme and take a position. “Respect, tolerance, and acceptation for what one is are the conditions necessary to overcome cultural differences, in addition to being a necessity for survival in a globalized world.” If you ask yourself at the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Lissone, where is the home of modern man, then at the Frugone Collection, Raccolte Frugone in Nervi on the east side of Genoa, the real question is, where is the museum? The show, Museum: all-over / Museo: ovunque, open till August 29, is the artist Sean Miller’s answer. He is investigating the idea of the museum itself: too bureaucratic, too expensive, too subject to the commercial logic of earnings, to be able to take risks. The American, Sean Miller founded the anti-conventional JEMA - John Erickson Museum of Art where works of art are housed in small but robust boxes in aluminum. They are easy to transport, and place in any exhibition space. This set-up encourages radical experimentation at moderate costs. The Raccolte Frugone are presenting a site-specific project, with miniature installations in different museum halls and almost a hundred drawings by American and European artists dedicated to the creation of alternative spaces for contemporary art.
