The logo of the XXIV European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Turin is one of the very few, in the history of World and European Championships, that refers to music. Together with the gymnasts and small apparatuses, music plays one of the leading roles in this sport. Perhaps the first union of movement and music appeared on a badge of the 1969 World Championships in Varna. A less stylized figure the one of today, which depicts a treble clef, also known as the violin clef or G-clef. Appearing later, in 1983 in Belgrade during the first World Cup, a figure was portrayed that resembled a musical notation, perhaps a quaver or a crotchet with the stem leaning on a gymnast in movement. This year’s Championship has a significant logo: The reference to music may make young athletes reflect on what they sometimes use without appreciating all the nuances and will be useful to spectators that will unite the movement to music and thus to rhythm, which is what makes rhythmic gymnastics different from other sports. These years have really been a strong, tangible landmark in the history of Turin and Piedmont. The Winter Olympics, which were hosted here in 2006, marked the beginning of a long, extraordinarily valuable experience in many fields. Piedmont has demonstrated it can live up to its international role, a role whose success went far beyond expectations and whose effects will last a long time. Piedmont’s Legislative Assembly has immediately expressed backing for the important project of the Royal Gymnastics Society of Turin to publish “Italy’s Team Performance at the European Championships” by Maria Rosa Rosato and Amalia Tinto. Through this book, the Royal Gymnastics Society is reaffirming its role in sports history, based on being the first ever Italian sports association established back in 1844 while at the same time representing the future of sports at its best. Therefore, The XXIV European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship will confirm Turin’s international aspirations; the choice to host again in Italy, 22 years later, one of the most prestigious sport events in the world precisely at this juncture is, indeed, not coincidental. Once again we will be leading figures in the world of competitive sport, thus showing how “Turin and Piedmont have changed and they deserve to be known”. We could even use that as a slogan to attract ever more visitors to ourregion, since we are confident that once they see it in person, they will not be disappointed. Davide Gariglio Presidente del Consiglio Regione Piemonte Chairman of the Regional Council of Piedmont 6 libro ginnastica 2008.pmd 6 23/05/2008, 8.24 Torino has always been a pioneering city in many ways. In addition to the best-known examples - cinema, automotive industry, fashion, telephone systems, TV - our city gave birth to one of the first sports association in Italy: an experience which, slowly and gradually, spread to the whole country and greatly influenced customs, society, fashion, lifestyles. Hence, the Centro Crocetta municipal district, takes great pride in hosting the Reale Società Ginnastica - Royal Society of Gymnastics on its territory. All the more so, as the Society does not simply belong to a great historical heritage, but still aims today at being a place that offers sport for everyone. With the talent that is typical of the Turinese, who jealously love and take pride in their historical roots, but are also able to combine them with modern needs with an eye to the future. Therefore, we cannot help but wishing that we will keep along this same path that - thanks also to the cooperation between private organizations and “the Public Thing”- may lead to more and more people being given the possibility to practice sports. A forerunner of this discipline and, even before, authoritative figure of our Federation, which I have the honour to have been a collaborator. The eight gymnasts in Madrid, with their trainers, would never have imagined being pioneers of today’s success, unaware testimony to the birth of sports movement of such importance. Those names, and those who have inspired the six successive glories, are milestones of a journey of common growth. Colour images imprinted in the memory, yellowed photos in the Federal photo albums, a reference point for modern day protagonists. We have had legendary models of Artistic Gymnastics in every era. I also, as a boy, watched Guglielmetti, Romeo Neri, until Alberto Braglia. Rhythmic, however, did not have this pretext. Those that started, at the time, like all the forerunners, had to support themselves on the ephemeral footing of a dream, a strong instinctive vision, which more often than not, in the contemporaneousness of the events, resembled foolishness. Thanks to these fearless pioneers, in the third millennium, we have reached the top of the Olympic summit, aiming for Beijing goals that were unthinkable thirty years ago. In Sports, by and large, as in many other fields, the past represents an essential heritage to construct the successes of tomorrow, and not only from the technical point of view. For the oldest Italian Federation, Gymnastics, originating in 1869 - many years before the Baron De Coubertin inaugurated the Games in Athens - this last centenary wealth of emotions, deriving from a life of commitment, hard work, and daily sacrifice, represents a sort of DNA, that makes us all feel part of a larger project. The disciplines that we practice today are the evolution of those portrayed in bas-reliefs of Greek temples and in the decorations of Roman or Etruscan tableware. For this I am convinced that all what has preceded us is not something ancient to leave in the attic but a treasure to put on display. After Florence in 1986, it’s Turin’s turn in 2008, where we will have the chance to admire the best European gymnasts. The choice of Turin is not random as it was actually in the capital of Piedmont region where rhythmic gymnastics found its cradle. Maria Rosa Rosato and Amalia Tinto, authors of this book, with wonderful skill and knowledge, describe the origins of this discipline, the history of the Turinese society and in substance, the recollection of the fascinating reality of how it was formed. The text traces the history of Rhythmic Gymnastics: from the training of many generations of youngsters, to remembering important competitive results of local athletes, in the national and international field. The book includes a collection of images, data, charts, and the story of decades of activities that constitute an unique heritage in the history of Turinese sports that involve the city and is delivered to the readers like a treasure from which leave with even more momentum for new fascinating future challenges. Valter Peroni Presidente del Comitato Organizzatore del XXIV Campionato d’Europa di Ginnastica Ritmica, Torino 2008 President of the XXIV European Championships Organizing Committee 2008 Rhythmic Gymnastics in Turin For many reasons that should be noted, it is my pleasure to present this text by Maria Rosa Rosata and Amalia Tinto, titled “ Italy’s Team Performance in the European Championships”. First of all they are two very capable physical education teachers who have dedicated their renown profession to teaching modern rhythmic gymnastics, today called rhythmic gymnastics, at the Higher Institute of Physical Education in Turin Con piacere presento il testo curato da Maria Rosa Rosato ed Amalia Tinto, dal titolo “L’esercizio di squadra dell’Italia ai Campionati d’Europa ”, per molti motivi che è doveroso elencare. - currently the SIUSM. Both have covered the prestigious role of Federal Technical Responsible of the then called modern-rhythmic national team, when the Technical Directors were Professor Andreina Gotta Sacco and later Professor Egle Abruzzini, for years and until today President of the International Technical Committee of the field under discussion. Another reason is that to remember Professor Gotta-Sacco, a leading gymnast and athlete of our Royal Gymnastics Society (RSGT) and “godmother” of modern rhythmic gymnastics. RSGT is a burning force of sports in Turin and forerunner of Italian sport associations, whilst underlining the Gotta-Sacco, Rosato, and Tinto sequence, and represents the historical continuity, methodological, and technical basis of today’s rhythmic gymnastics. A school that one may call 100% Turinese, a recurring fact in the history of Italian physical education from its beginnings up to today and well known to scholars in the field. The title of the text is in some aspects limitative of the content. The first part illustrates the historical developments of the sport in a trim and interesting form (not only for those working in the field). This is followed by punctual and clear technical notes with particular reference to group exercises, their technical methodological and terminological evolution through the progress of the World Championships and the subject of the piano accompanying the exercises that played a fundamental role up until the current methods of music came around. The second part goes over the names and faces of Italian rhythmic gymnastics, the technical programmes of European Championships from 1978 to this year’s competition in Turin and a technical diary that unites the photographic documentation synthetically, without taking anything away from the completeness of the information, to the specific technical notes for each competition with precise comments and remarks. In conclusion: this is a precious contribution to the history of Italian rhythmic gymnastics, with interesting points for further studies and testimony to the authors commitment to rhythmic gymnastics which is still visible today. Salvatore Finocchiaro Cultore Storia dell’Educazione Fisica Phisic Education History lover 10 libro ginnastica 2008.pmd 10 23/05/2008, 8.24 The Gymnastics Society of Turin is proud to be taking charge of publishing the book “Italy’s Team Performance in the European Championships” by Maria Rosa Rosato and Amalia Tinto. We are proud of the author’s high professional level in rhythmic gymnastics that furthermore finds a precise historical meaning, in the fact that Italian rhythmic gymnastics originated here, in our home, exactly one century ago. Proof is found in the minutes of the S.G.T. no. 1092 of November 26, 1908 that reads: “… the teacher Ferraria holds a short course to the teachers with the Dalcroze method”. This speciality was actually conceived by the Viennese Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, as a method for learning music: he identified the close link between rhythm and the energetic response that body is able to provide in time and space. This explains why the method was used to learn music, as well as dance, and rhythmic gymnastics. Later, Turin and the S.G.T. continued to be protagonists in this discipline: The founder of the Italian method, Adreina Sacco Gotta was Turinese and athlete of our Society; the authors of this book were both active in our city as teachers at the ISEF and have covered and cover important international roles. Furthermore, the Italian participation at various European Championships - in particular, the team speciality - often included Turinese or Piedmont athletes. For these reasons, we welcomed with sincere enthusiasm, the idea to publish this text. An idea that is even more opportune as it is realised in conjunction with the XXIV European Championships in Turin: a sort of return to the roots, that is nice to emphasize with a work that retraces the steps and will certainly be a stimulus for our young athletes. Emanuele Lajolo di Cossano Presidente della Società Ginnastica Torino The President of the Gymnastics Society of Turin 11 libro ginnastica 2008.pmd 11 23/05/2008, 8.24 INTRODUZIONE FOREWORD Torino, antica e prima sede della ginnastica e dello sport italiano e della ginnastica ritmica in particolare, ospita il 24° Campionato d’Europa di Ginnastica Ritmica Turin, ancient and first site of gymnastics and Italian sports, especially rhythmic gymnastics, is the host of the 24th European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships An important international event like the European Championships doesn’t happen very often for the Italian Rhythmic Gymnastics; the last time hosted such an event was for the European Championships, hosted in the city of Florence a good 22 years ago in 1986. As this event is taking place in Turin, we find ourselves particularly involved. In the first place as coaches of many of national teams who have performed the majority of their technical preparation in Turin and the surrounding areas and additionally, because our professional life is linked to Turin as teachers of Rhythmic Gymnastics at the Higher Institute of Physical Education which later became the Interfaculty University School in Motor Sciences (SUISM). We have therefore traced, and in brief included in this text, the progress of our young sport, that draws its origins from the city of Turin, with particular reference to the group speciality in its performances at various European Championships. The rhythmic gymnastic group speciality is in fact an activity that was started in Turin by one of us and later pursued by the other, with the intention to preserve the key principles as desired by Andreina Sacco, Turinese founder of the Italian method. The text is divided in two parts: The first part looks back on the 1986 European Championship held in Florence, followed by a short account about the initiators of Modern Gymnastics. After, reference is made to the ancient form of rhythmic gymnastics connected to the programmes of women’s artistic gymnastics, associated to us only for the collective execution and not for execution techniques or for the exercise’s criteria of composition. We briefly remember the pianists who accompanied our team in the competitions, to move on and show, in the second part, the formation of the national senior teams participating in European championships since the first one held Un così importante evento internazionale come il Campionato d’Europa si presenta raramente per la Ginnastica Ritmica italiana; il precedente infatti, si trattava ancora di un Campionato d’Europa, è stato ospitato dalla città di Firenze ben 22 anni fa nel 1986. … and because, without a doubt, GRS will continue its evolutionary march, I would like that this activity keeps an unmistakable character of distinction from the other gymnastic disciplines, other sports, various dances, so that it is always possible to classify it in the right place and acknowledge it in its specific quality for which the beauty of the body is exalted through aesthetic, rhythmic, expressive, coordinated, and original movements. Thus, the GRS has no need to draw on or confuse itself with other types of movement outside of its true essence, keeping intact its pure, classical physiognomy, so to remain faithful to its principles, its form, and style. This is my thought on the matter… Quality for the practice of the sport Among the qualities that a gymnast must have to practice the sport, there are many, not only those of physical nature, that refer to the formation of personality, which enhances the expressive and artistic attitudes and contribute to achieving a long lasting and stable balance. All this leads to tackle the difficulties in the gym with serenity, and allows one to transfer these behaviours in relations of everyday life. Obstacles are surpassed with abnegation, the sense of critical and constructive collaboration leads to reworking the limits to progress and to enhance oneself. The virtue that makes a person full of honour… is not the abstract idea of a moral perfection, measured by the commandment of a supreme divine force. The concept of virtue means to be capable of something, to be genuine and perfect in one’s own genre, it is still this way for the Greek concept of areté: the set of qualities that make them able to fight” (Johan Huizinga, “Homo ludens” citato da Livio Sichirollo in “L’etica agonale nella grecia antica” XXX Convegno CSEFF, Silvercopy, Torino, 1998) (Johan Huizinga, “Homo ludens” quoted by Livio Sichirollo in “L’etica agonale nella grecia antica” XXX CSEFF Convention, Silvercopy, Torino, 1998) Quindi il coraggio, la forza, il valore, la nobiltà d’animo, la generosità sono qualità comprese nel termine virtù. Therefore courage, strength, values, the nobility of spirit, and generosity are qualities included in the term virtue. Competition and competitiveness, for the continual practice of virtue, contribute to do one’s best in comparison. 16 libro ginnastica 2008.pmd 16 23/05/2008, 8.24
