President’s Message / Messaggio Del Presidente
Dear Members,
Each year we are afforded a wonderful opportunity to gather as a
Ciociaro family and celebrate the remarkable success that our Club
has achieved. On April 26, 2009 we will commemorate our 37th
anniversary in what is sure to be a wonderful event.
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the City of Frosinone to
whom will be conferred the title of “Città dell’ Anno 2009/2010”. We
are delighted to have the opportunity to host Mr. Michele Marini,
Mayor of Frosinone and his delegation who will be present to receive
this prestigious honour.
Likewise, we are pleased to announce that in addition to receiving the
“Città dell’ Anno” award, the delegation from Frosinone is here to
enter into a formal twinning with the Town of Tecumseh.
This represents a significant and momentous occasion for both
communities. They will have the opportunity to work together going
forward on economic, educational, and cultural initiatives to the
benefit of the citizens of both municipalities.
In particular, this occasion is especially important for all the members
of the Ciociaro Club, who must be very proud of the realization of this
initiative.
A special thank you to the leadership shown by both Mayors (Michele
Marini – Frosinone and Gary McNamara - Tecumseh). Their
participation and support of this initiative is an affirmation of the
benefits that they are sure to develop together in the future. Equally as
important, it is a powerful acknowledgement of the skills, abilities,
and success demonstrated by the Ciociaro community of SouthWestern Ontario.

Cari soci,
Ogni anno ci si presenta questa splendita occasione di riunirci come
una famiglia ciociara a festeggiare insieme il glorioso successo
ottenuto dal nostro Club. Il 26 aprile 2009, commemoreremo insieme
il 37mo anniversario, il quale, come ormai ci sempre aspettiamo, sara’
un magnifico evento.
Sono molto onorato nel congratulare la citta’ di Frosinone, alla quale
verra’ conferito il titolo di “Città dell’Anno 2009/2010”. Siamo
altrettanto lusingati di avere l’opportunita’ di ospitare il Signor
Michele Marini, sindaco di Frosinone e la sua intera delegazione, la
quale sara’ presente, con il Signor Marini, durante l’assegnamento di
questo perstigioso onore.
Ugualmente, ci fa molto piacere annunciare che oltre a ricevere
l’onore di “Città dell’Anno”, la delegazione e’ qui con noi ad entrare
a far parte del gemellaggio ufficiale con la citta’ di Tecumseh.
Cio’ rappresenta un’occasione molto significativa per ambedue le
comunita’, le quali avranno l’opportunita’ di unirsi per un futuro
sviluppo economico, culturale e istruttivo per il beneficio dei cittadini
delle due citta’.
Particolarmente, questa occasione e’ di speciale importanza per tutti i
soci del Ciociaro Club, i quali sono sicuramente molto fieri di aver
realizzato questa importante iniziativa.
Infiniti ringraziamenti alla guida mostrata da ambedue i sindaci
(Michele Marini – Frosinone e Gary McNamara – Tecumseh). La loro
partecipazione e il loro appoggio per questa iniziativa, e’ comferma e
sicurezza dei vantaggi che verranno sviluppati insieme nel futuro.
Ugualmente importante e’ il loro apprezzamento delle capacita’,
abilita’ e degli eccellenti successi ottenuti e dimostrati dalla comunita’
ciociara del sud-ovest Ontario.

Paese storico della Ciociaria: FROSINONE
Moderno capoluogo di provincia con ben novantuno
comuni nella regione del Lazio, con circa cinquantamila
abitanti e con centro situato su una bellissima collina a
291 metri sul livello del mare, Frosinone e’ stato il
miracolo dello sviluppo durante gli ultimi quaranta
anni.
Frusino, come si chiamava anticamente, e’ situata nel
territorio degli Ernici e fu di origine volsca.
Municipium al tempo romano, nel medioevo passava
alla Chiesa sotto il cui dominio rimase con alterne
vicende. Già capoluogo di “Campagna e Marittima”,
nel 1926 divenne capoluogo di Provincia e poi sede di Stemma
Prefettura.
Con il grande sviluppo industriale della citta’ iniziato verso la fine degli anni
‘60, la sua economia agricola e commerciale si è mutata in industriale con
stabilimenti di importanza nazionale, posti lungo le grandi assi di
comunicazione. La citta’ si trova proprio a lato di due grandi sistemi di
trasporto, l’Autostrada del Sole e la ferrovia, le quali connettano
comodamente Frosinone con Roma e quindi con il resto del nord-Italia ed
Europa a nord e Napoli e il resto del sud-Italia a sud.
Lo sviluppo industriale ha dato il via a una serie di miglioramento a tutti gli
abitanti della citta’ e della provincia in generale. Sono state costruite nuove
strade, abitazioni moderne, centri commerciali, grattacieli, nuove scuole,
piscina olimpica (verra’ utilizzata per i campionati mondiali di nuoto, Roma
2009), banche, sistemi per il controllo degli inquinanti e per il miglioramento
ambientale, ecc. Insomma, quella che una volta era una zona quasi
dimenticata dal progresso, nel giro di pochi decenni, grazie all’intelligenza
delle autorita’ politiche e amministrative, le quali hanno saputo come
progettare, quindi guidare lo sviluppo della citta’, Frosinone e’ oggi seconda
a nessun’altra citta’ di tale categoria.
Il centro storico si sviluppa sulla collina, dove domina il Palazzo della
Prefettura. Interessanti reperti archeologici sono conservati nel museo
comunale, mentre ai piedi della collina sono stati rinvenuti i resti di un
anfiteatro romano.
Proprio per queste origini antichissime possiamo ricollegare ai saturnali
romani e quindi ai riti della fertilità, la festa carnevalesca della “Radeca”
(foglia d’agave, simbolo di fecondità). Festa che si è poi rivestita di altri
significati (lotta per la libertà) con la personificazione del generale francese
Championnet nel re del Carnevale che finirà bruciato. Tra i monumenti,
S.Maria dell’XI secolo (ricostruita) con l’annesso campanile quadrato di
origine romanica.
Importante nel campo dello sport: nel calcio, il “Frosinone” si esibisce
orgogliosamente in Serie B.

Modern provincial capital city of 91 towns and other cities in the Region of
Lazio, with about 50,000 residents and with the centre situated on top of a hill
291 metres above sea level, Frosinone has been the miracle of progress
during the last 40 years.
Frusino, nested in the “Ernici” territory, was of “Volsci” origin. Municipium
during the Roman era, in the Middle Ages was transferred to the Church for

a length of time, through many events. Already chief town of
“Campagna and Marittima” (Country and Maritime), in 1926
became Provincial Capital and later the seat of the Prefecture.
With the great development of the city that began in the late
1960’s, its agricultural and commercial economy, has changed to
industrial, with many factories of national importance, situated
along the great lines of communications. The city enjoys the
benefits of two great systems of transportation, the “Autostrada
del Sole” and the railroad, which connect Frosinone to Rome and
therefore, to the rest of Northern Italy and Europe to the North
and Naples and the rest of Southern Italy to the South.
The industrial development has given way to a series of
improvements in the lives of all the inhabitants of Frosinone and
of the provincial territory in general. New roads have been built,
along with new subdivisions, shopping malls, skyscrapers, new
schools, an olympic size swimming pool (it will be used for the
swimming world championships, 2009, in Rome), banks,
pollution control systems, environmental protection systems, etc.
Therefore, what once used to be an area almost forgotten by
progress, in the course of a few decades, thanks to the smart
planning of the political and administrative authorities, Frosinone
is today a city second to none of its category.
The historic centre is found on the hill, where the Palace of the
Prefecture dominates. Interesting archaeological finds are
preserved in the city museum, while excavations at the foot of the
hill have revealed what remains of a Roman amphitheatre.
Through these very primitive origins a connection can be made to
the Roman Saturnals, therefore, to the rites of fertility, the
Carnival festival of the “Radeca” (agave leaf, symbol of
fecundity). This festival has through time, been enriched by other
meanings (fight for freedom is one) with personification of the
French general Championnet in the king of the Carnival, which,
in the play, will end up burned up. Among the monuments, Saint
Maria of the XI century (restored), with the attached bell-tower
of Romanesque origin.
Important in sports: the “Frosinone” soccer team, proudly
performs in the Italian 2nd Division, Serie-B.

Trunk Sanitary Sewer
Announcement - North
Talbot Road
The Town of Tecumseh will receive
$3 million toward the installation of
the Oldcastle Hamlet Trunk Sanitary
Sewer, a long anticipated project that
was included in an infrastructure
funding announcement made on
February 13, 2009. The funding will
be shared by The Government of
Canada and the Government of
Ontario. The first phase of the
“Oldcastle Hamlet Trunk Sanitary
Sewer” will extend along North
Talbot Road from Outer Drive to
Oldcastle Road / 8th Concession
Road. This Club has been waiting for
this announcement for decades and it
will be of great benefit because it
will allow us to move from our septic
system to the new modern trunk
sewer infrastructure.

The Board of Directors of the
Ciociaro Club has been involved in
negotiations with our neighbours for
the last several months to purchase
the 16 acres of land adjacent to the
Club (East Side of the Club with
Frontage on North Talbot Road and it
also has access via Oldcastle Rd). At
our last regularly scheduled Board
Meeting on March 26, 2009 the board
approved the purchase of the property
conditional upon approval of the
General Assembly. At the General
Assembly meeting on March 29,
2009, the members approved this
purchase.

On March 12, the Men's Bocciofila were invited to a tournament in
Cape Cod Coral, Florida. Six men from Ciociaro CLub attended.
They were Rocco Lecce, Americo Rizza, Giorgio Paniccia, Danny
Di Mario, Rinaldo Moscone and Pierino Gugliementi.
Even though they did not place, a good time was had by all. The
weather was wonderful and of course we made many new
friendships. We also had a chance to see paesani from Baltimore,
New York, California and Florida. It was a great experience and
hopefully we can do it again one day!!
Walking Club
Come and join us each evening at 7:00 pm for a walk on the bicycle
track (weather permitting). Hope to see you there for
some fresh air, for good health and the comraderie.

This year’s members’ banquet will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2009. Tickets are available at the office for
pick up. Members’ tickets are free and guests will be $45.00. Doors will open at 4:00 p.m., ceremony begins
at 5:00 p.m. and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. This year we are proud to honour Frosinone as “City of
the Year for 2009-2010”. There will be many Italian and Canadian dignitaries attending our banquet. Please
come and enjoy the celebration of our membership and Ciociaro family.

Quest’anno il banchetto dei soci avra’ luogo domenica, 26 aprile 2009. I biglietti sono disponibili
presso l’ufficio del nostro club. Vi informiamo che i biglietti per i soci saranno gratis e per i non soci
costeranno $45.00. L’ingresso al club sara’ possibile dalle ore 16:00, la cerimonia inizia alle ore 17:00
e la cena sara’ servita alle 17:30. Quest’anno siamo orgogliosi di onorare Frosinone come “Città
dell’Anno 2009-2010”. Parteciperanno a questo banchetto numerosi dignitari italiani e canadesi.
Twin City Initiative
“Il Gemellaggio”
In addition to the “City of the Year” award we are
proud to announce that the City of Frosinone and the
Town of Tecumseh have agreed to enter into a twin
city relationship. This agreement will allow for
strengthening of friendships while also allowing the
two municipalities to work toward opportunities to
jointly develop economic, cultural, and educational
endeavors for the common benefit of the citizens of
both communities.
The Ciociaro Community of Southwestern Ontario
takes pride in this agreement that significantly links
the beloved land of our origin to the land in which we
now live. The Ciociaro Club congratulates both
Mayor McNamara and Mayor Marini and their
respective Town Councils for agreeing to this historic
initiative. The Ciociaro Club is also proud to pledge
its full support behind this initiative which will allow
its members to maintain and nurture their relationship
to our beloved homeland.
The formal signing ceremony will take place at
Tecumseh Town hall on Tuesday April 28, 2009 at
6:00 pm (917 Lesperance Rd) . You are all
welcome to participate in this historic event. In
addition the community is invited to attend a
reception to celebrate the twinning which will be
held at the Ciociaro Club on Tuesday April 28,
2009 from 7:00pm-12:00am
Again you are all welcome to participate at the
reception where you will get an opportunity to
meet members of both councils and also other
dignitaries.

a far parte di un rapporto di gemellaggio con la citta’ di

orgogliosa nell’annunciare questo accordo, il quale fortifica
l’alleanza tra la nostra amata terra di origine e quella nella
quale ora viviamo. Il Ciociaro Club estende i piu’ fervidi
auguri al Signor Sindaco McNamara e al Signor Sindaco
Michele Marini e i loro rispettivi Consigli Amministrativi
per essersi storicamente legati a questa promettente
associazione. Il Ciociaro Club sara’ orgoglioso di garantire
il suo completo appoggio al gemellaggio, il quale
consentira’ a tutti i soci di mantenere e migliorare il
rapporto con la nostra bella, amata provincia.
L’accordo sara’ reso ufficiale nella sala comunale di
Tecumseh (917 Lesperance Rd.), martedi 28 aprile 2009,
alle ore 18:00. Tutti sono benvenuti a partecipare.
Ulteriormente, la comunita’ e’ invitata ad attendere un
ricevimento (Ciociaro Club, martedi 28 aprile 2009,
dalle ore 19:00 a mezzanotte) per festeggiare il
gemellaggio.
Di nuovo, tutti sono invitati al ricevimento, dove si avra’
l’opportunita’ e l’occasione di conoscere i
rappresentanti delle due delegazioni ed altri dignitari.

San Silverio, papa
Nato a Frosinone (patrono, ora, di Frosinone con San Ormisda)
intorno all’anno 480 e fu papa dal 536 al 537.
Figlio legittimo di Ormisda, un altro papa, caso unico nella storia
pontificale. Silverio venne quindi educato ed istruito attraverso
una grande fede, oltre a una vasta cultura nelle lettere e nei
dettami cristiani. Il 6 agosto 523 papa Sant’Ormisda morÏ e all’età
di circa 43 anni il destino di Silverio si concretizzò. Silverio era
un semplice suddiacono della Chiesa romana, apparteneva quindi
ad una categoria inferiore che non era mai stata prescelta per dare
un successore al seggio di Pietro, quando, giunta a Roma la
notizia della repentina morte del papa Agapito, avvenuta a
Costantinopoli il 22 aprile 536, Silverio fu eletto papa per
imposizione del re ostrogoto Teodato, nel timore che venisse
prescelto un papa filobizantino; era il 20 giugno del 536. Il suo
pontificato fu breve e travagliato. Egli fu coinvolto, quasi
certamente contro la sua volontà, nelle lotte politiche e religiose
che in quegli anni turbarono l’Italia e la Chiesa: era infatti in atto
la guerra tra Bizantini e Ostrogoti per il possesso dell’Italia;
mentre in Oriente poi perduravano e si agitavano altri vari gruppi.
Silverio fu vittima del convergere delle contese politiche e religiose. Poco dopo la sua elezione, il re
Teodato, protettore di Silverio, fu deposto e ucciso dai Goti. Il nuovo re degli Ostrogoti, Vitige, cinse
d’assedio la città di Roma e cosÏ cominciÚ la tragedia di Silverio. L’11 marzo 537, il Santo papa fu
deportato nella città di Patara nella Licia, in Turchia; immediatamente fu eletto papa l’apocrisario Vigilio.
Ma tale e tanta fu l’amarezza che il vescovo di Patara, pietosamente, ottenne dall’imperatore d’Oriente,
il ritorno in patria per un nuovo giudizio. Appena la nave giunse a Napoli, Silverio fu scortato, senza pietà
alcuna, nel luogo simbolo dei martiri cristiani: le isole Ponziane. Mori’ circa l’11 novembre 537.
Uno dei simboli del Santo, la sua statua (realizzata nel 1956), si trova nella Cattedrale di Santa Maria.
Born around 480, and now Patron Saint of Frosinone, Saint Silverio was pope from 536 to 537. Son of
another pope (Ormisda), a first in the history of the papacy, he was raised and educated though the great
faith of Christianity and exposed to an immense culture in such religious complex. His father died August
6, 523 at the young age of 43 and Silverio’s destiny was accomplished. He was a simple sub-deacon in
the Roman Church and did not, therefore, belong to the ranks which would qualify him to ascend to
Peter’s throne. On April 22, 536, Pope Agapito died suddenly in Constantinople and on June 20 536,
Silverio was catapulted to the very top, becoming Pope Silverio with the support of the Ostrogoth King
Theodath, fearing the election of a Byzantine pope. His term was very short and tumultuous. He was
involved in the political and religious battles, which in those years victimized Italy and the Church: there
was, in fact, war between the Byzantines and Ostrogoths for the very possession of Italy; with more
turmoil in the Eastern part of Roman Empire. Silverio was stuck in the middle. Shortly after his election,
King Theodath was deposed from the throne and killed by the Goths. The new king of the Ostrogoths,
Bitige, put Rome under siege and Pope Silverio’s troubles began. On March 11, 537, the Holy pope was
deported to Patara, Turkey, while another pope, Vigilio, was immediately elected. The bishop of Patara
had pity of Silverio and with the help of the Eastern emperor, was able to return Silverio to his homeland
for the hope of a review of his case. As soon as he landed in Naples, he was escorted without any comfort
or respect, to the land of the Christian martyrs: the “Ponziane” Islands, South-East of Rome, where he
died around November 11, 537.
One of the symbols of the Saint, his statue (made in Rome in 1956), is found in the Cathedral of Santa
Maria.

CHEF’S CORNER:
LA PIGNA
“EASTER
CAKE”
10 uova,
1/2 kg zucchero,
1 cucchiaio di strutto, 1 bicchiere di olio,
1/4 lt di latte, 1 bicchiere di liquori vari e
marsala, cedro, candito, uvetta, vaniglia e
cannella a volontà, 25 gr lievito di birra,
farina quanta ne tira un impasto piuttosto
morbido
La sera impastare un po’ di lievito di pane
sciolto con acqua tiepida con 1/2 kg di
farina. Lasciare lievitare tutta la notte. La
mattina ammassare questa pasta lievitata e
con in più il lievito di birra e tutti gli
ingredienti. L’uvetta e i canditi è bene
metterli in ultimo. Sbattere energicamente
finché la pasta non si stacca dal tavolo.
Imburrare le teglie e lasciare crescere al
caldo. lnfornare subito non appena
raggiunto il punto ideale di lievitazione.
10 eggs, 1/2 kg sugar, 1 tbsp butter, 1 cup
of oil, 250 ml of milk, 1 cup of various
liqueurs and marsala wine, citron, candies,
raisins, vanilla and cinnamon in
abundance, 1 oz of beer yeast, a sufficient
quantity of flour for a really soft dough.
In the evening knead some bread yeast,
dissolved in tepid water, with 1/2 kg of
flour. Let rise all night. In the morning work
this leavened dough, adding the beer yeast
and the other ingredients. Add the raisins
and the candies in the end. Work strongly
until the dough does not stick to the table.
Butter the baking tins and let rise keeping
the dough warm. Bake until nice and high.
