RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Research Sectors
The main research is the study of fungal pathogens by using molecular techniques, mainly based on real –
time PCR. At the present he is working on biology, epidemiology and detection of invasive fungal pathogens
(Heterobasidion irregulare, Chalara fraxinea, Fusarium circinatum and Ceratocystis platani) in Mediterranean
area. In this context the association between invasive insect (Leptoglossus occidantalis) and the native
pathogen (Diplodia sapinea) has been studied. He also optimized real-time PCR assay for the early detection
of fungal pathogens in nurseries and in forests. Quantitative PCR assay, based on TaqMan chemistry, were
developed to quantify pathogens at early stage of colonization in the following pathosystems: Diplodia
sapinea/ Pinus, Biscogniauxia mediterranea/ Quercus, B. nummularia/ Fagus, Ophiostoma novo-ulmi/Ulmus
and Phytophthora spp. The High Resolution Melting Analysis has been performed to distinguish strictly related
fungal species, such as D. sapinea and D. scrobiculata on pine shoots. He was also involved in population
studies of fungal pathogens such as Heterobasidion annosum, H. abietinum, D. sapinea and Caliciopsis pinea.
1
He also studied induced systemic resistance on conifer species after infections caused by crown and root
pathogens (D. sapinea, H. annosum and H. irregulare).
Recent Scientific Activities
He is Responsible of Research Unit within the National Project (FIRB - DEFINE) “Assessing the impacts of
invasive fungal pathogens and phytophagous insects on native plants, pathogens, phytophagous insects and
symbionts”, where the differences between native and invasive insects and fungal pathogens are studied. This
research includes the analysis of plant transcripts by using RT-qPCR on Pinus pinea infected with native (H.
annosum) and invasive (H. irregulare) fungal pathogens. He also worked within the European Project ISEFOR
(Increasing Sustainability of European Forests: Modelling for Security Against Invasive Pests and Pathogens
under Climate Change), developing molecular assay to detect alien fungal species in forest trees.
POST DEGREE EXPERIENCE
He established national and international cooperation with:
a) Department of Biochemical chemistry, University of Florence, (since 2001) where he developed the studies
of real-time PCR on forest trees;
b) The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA (2003) where he studied the resistance induced (SIR), on
Pinus nigra inoculated with Sphaeropsis sapinea and Diplodia scrobiculata;
c) Finnish Forest Research Insitute, Helsinki (2004), molecular characterization of H. annosum s.s. population
in central Italy and Europe, by using RAMs;
d) Norwegian Forest Research Insitute, Oslo, (2005), studies on H. annosum on Norway spruce by using realtime PCR;
e) Finnish Forest Research Insitute, Helsinki (2006), molecular characterization of H. abietinum population in

disease in nurseries and particularly on woody plants from the Mediterranean area.
