Comparatives and Superlatives
CORSO BASE DI INGLESE Videolezioni - grammatica 52 Comparatives and Superlatives I comparativi e i superlativi There are two ways to form comparative and superlative adjectives. One way is to use "more" before adjectives for the comparative and "the most" before adjectives for the superlative. Ci sono due modi per formare il comparativo e il superlativo degli aggettivi. Uno è quello di mettere, davanti agli aggettivi, “more” (più) per il comparativo e “the most” (il più) per il superlativo. This is what is done with all adjectives of three syllables or more, and with most two-syllable adjectives. It is not done with two-syllable adjectives that end in "y" and with one-syllable adjectives. Questo è quanto avviene per tutti gli aggettivi di tre o più sillabe e con la maggior parte degli aggettivi bisillabi. Ma non è valido per gli aggettivi bisillabi che terminano in “y” e per quelli monosillabi. With two-syllable adjectives that end in "ow", "le" and "er" we have a choice but usually we form the comparatives and superlatives of these adjectives with "more" and "the most". Con gli aggettivi bisillabi che terminano in “ow”, “le” e “er” si può scegliere, ma normalmente il comparativo e il superlativo si formano aggiungendo “more” e “the most”. Here are examples of long adjectives of three or more syllables: Expensive: more expensive -- the most expensive Reliable: more reliable -- the most reliable Difficult: more difficult -- the most difficult Di seguito sono riportati degli esempi di aggettivi di tre o più sillabe: Caro: più caro -- il più caro Affidabile: più affidabile -- il più affidabile Difficile: più difficile -- il più difficile Here are examples of two-syllable adjectives with which we must use "more" and "the most": Ecco alcuni esempi di aggettivi bisillabi con cui si deve usare “more” e “the most”: Boring: more boring -- the most boring Useful: more useful -- the most useful Noioso: più noioso -- il più noioso Utile: più utile -- il più utile Instead with one-syllable adjectives we do not use "more" and "the most". We add the ending "er" to form the comparative and the ending "est" to form the superlative. Invece, con gli aggettivi monosillabi, non si usa “more” né “the most”, ma si aggiunge la desinenza “er” per formare il comparativo e la desinenza “est” per formare il superlativo. Old: older -- the oldest Young: younger -- the youngest Hard: harder -- the hardest Vecchio: più vecchio -- il più vecchio Giovane: più giovane -- il più giovane Duro: più duro -- il più duro CORSO BASE DI INGLESE Videolezioni - grammatica 52 We also use the endings "er" and "est" with twosyllable adjectives which end in "y": Si usano le desinenze “er” e “est” anche con gli aggettivi bisillabi che terminano in “y”: Happy: happier -- the happiest Easy: easier -- the easiest Felice: più felice -- il più felice Facile: più facile -- il più facile For one-syllable adjectives and for two-syllable adjectives that end in "y", it is a mistake to use "more" and "the most": Per gli aggettivi monosillabi e per quelli bisillabi che terminano in “y”, è un errore usare “more” e “the most”: "more old", "the most old" are mistakes. “more old”, “the most old” sono degli errori. There are also cases when you can choose between "more", "the most" and the "er", "est" endings. Esistono anche casi in cui si può scegliere tra “more”, “the most” e le desinenze “er”, “est”. With two-syllable adjectives that end in "ow", "er" and "le", we can use either the "er" and "est" endings or "more", "the most". Con gli aggettivi bisillabi che terminano in “ow”, “er” e “le” si può utilizzare sia le desinenze “er”, “est” sia “more” , “the most”. Both are correct: Narrow: narrower -- the narrowest Gentle: gentler -- the gentlest or Narrow: more narrow -- the most narrow Gentle: more gentle -- the most gentle With the following adjectives, we can also choose either the "er", "est" endings or "more", "the most": Handsome Quiet Pleasant Stupid Tired Entrambe le forme sono corrette: Stretto: più stretto -- il più stretto Gentile: più gentile -- il più gentile Anche con i seguenti aggettivi si può scegliere di usare le desinenze “er”, “est” o “”more”, “the most”.
