T he willingness of the developer and the planner f or this island, f rom the competition phase is to position
the project of high environmental quality and to include it in a PassivHaus certif ication. A passive residence
is a virtually independent housing f or its heating needs: it can indeed be content with solar gains, the
energy released by the occupants and household appliances and good insulation. Requirements "induced"
by the lens 'passivhaus' are numerous: controlled cost, design details, collaborative work upstream with all
project stakeholders, etc ... T hese objectives can sometimes get in 'conf lict' with urban requirements.
Nevertheless, f acing south towards the Garettes Vallon in Orvault, in the Nantes area, the island site is
positioned as a "balcony" opening on an open and green view, which is a North gazebo / South almost
perf ect 'proposal f or a' passiv'haus'. T he architectural layout is divided into three separate buildings, and
supplemented by three semi-underground houses built specif ically in the Park. T his f ragmentation of the
buildings can of f er views sequenced f rom the street to the north, and soothes density 'supposed' of the
project. T he project f ocuses theref ore a bioclimatic approach:

T he project emphasizes the concepts of ownership and residence by the will to get closer to individualized
access f or maximum housing, and by private extensions f or each dwelling. Also, our project proposes to
re-introduce concepts such as the f act to survey an alley, to borrow a gently sloping path to walk along a
valley, crossing a bridge, to overhang another place, to go home.
For each building, the main access is by the north f acade. T he external walkways detached f rom the main
structure, of f er multiple views and promote lif e skills together. T hey generalize apartments crossing,
double and triple orientation, without vis-à-vis and preserving the privacy of each.
On the ground f loor, housing is accessible f rom the outside by a f ootpath of f the ground, "pontoons"
introducing a gradual distancing between the public and the private.
T he buildings, corridors and terraces, are wrapped in a skin natural douglas blades purged sapwood, with
alternating rhythm. South, Vallon side railings also describe an alternating rhythm: light metal f loors and
attic openwork chevrons. In the North, Railing corridors are lighter, perf orated metal, to pass a more
homogeneous light. T his allows to reduce the linearity and break the monotony of plain f acades and cutting
the f rame in rhythmic sequence. T his epidermis and provides a vibration chromatic f acades and suggested
thickness.

architectural identity o f the future district.
The pro ject emphasizes therefo re the enviro nmental appro ach and ado pt the principles o f bio climatic architecture, a site
“nearly ideal” fo r this:
- A mixed co ncrete and timber frame structure is favo ured giving the building inertia necessary fo r any building to sto re heat
and redistribute it, as well as to favo ur the aco ustics between apartments,
- A do uble insulatio n fro m the o utside and inside with high airtightness.
- Research o f co mpactness and a cro ss o f the vo lume o f ho using.
- Several Lo cal public bicycles will be pro vided inside buildings
- The co rrido rs and balco nies in wo o d and metal structure detached fro m the primary structure o f the frames (to avo id thermal
bridging)
Therefo re, the pro ject meets the thermal perfo rmance in a PassivHaus certificatio n.

The frame is wo o d. This ensures o ptimal enviro nmental perfo rmance, co ncrete ensuring the
thermal inertia o f the pro ject, wo o d, bio -based materials with the interpo sitio n o f an efficient
thermal insulatio n between framing members. Wo o d siding is o f several types: natural do uglas
purged sapwo o d (3 natural class) to the attic and exterio r sheds, and Do uglas Treaty "bro wn"
