Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute towards the production of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels by means of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing biomass and waste to energy technologies are currently undergoing rapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of these technologies, in many countries their implementation remains limited. Advances in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste will represent central debate topics of the sixth edition of the Venice Symposia. The following sub-topics will also be discussed: combustion, anaerobic digestion, biomass to energy, alternative thermal treatments, strategies and policies, other waste-to-energy options. Particular attention will be paid to the characteristics of combustible products generable from different approaches: SRF, biochar, biodiesel and other products suitable for a decentralized exploitation of the energy content of waste and biomass. The Symposium is organized by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG) and Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Venezia, with the scientific support of the Padova, Hokkaido, Queensland, Rostock, Trento, Tsinghua and Hamburg University of Technology. 6 SYMPOSIUM STRUCTURE The Symposium is structured in oral sessions, a poster session, an exhibition by companies and institutions working in the field, and technical tours. Oral presentations are organized in six parallel tracks, for a total of 48 sessions and 6 workshops during which over 300 presentations will be delivered. Poster papers will be presented in an appropriate session, which will always be accessible to Symposium delegates, and discussed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. Papers were selected according to quality by the Symposium Executive Programme Committee and an International Committee from over 500 offers of papers from 60 different countries. Alibardi (GB), A. Muntoni (IT) In 2015 the European Commission launched an ambitious plan to implement the circular economy concept for the European Union. The European economic system has to move towards a sustainable, low carbon, resource efficient and competitive economy able to maintain value of products, materials and resources and minimize waste. The benefits should be a boost to European competitiveness, new business opportunities and the establishment of more efficient ways of producing and consuming. Implementation of a circular economy concepts in the waste management sector will require full exploitation of values and resources for all type of waste materials. For the management of organic waste fractions (food waste, agro-industrial waste, biowaste), the biorefinery concept represents a new frontier able to maximise conversion and extraction of high value or added value resources (bio-products, bio-fuels). The IWWG workshop on Waste Biorefinery is aimed discussing potential, uncertainties and direction of development for the implementation of biorefinery chains for organic waste management. Delson, G. Kladnik, M. Moore (US) The workshop will discuss the importance of either improving traditional methods for recovering energy from waste and destroying all substances of concern in wastewater and sewage sludge, or to find and embrace new waste treatment technologies that can: reduce/eliminate GHG emissions; keep decomposing residuals out of the environment; not use fossil fuel, and destroy hazardous and potentially hazardous chemical and biological substances in our waste streams. While progress has been made in dealing with these challenges through improved water and solid waste treatment systems and increased recycling of many waste materials, there is room for significant improvement in the treating of wastewaters, solid wastes, and in energy and valuable by-product recovery from these wastes. This is especially true in the Developing World where there is often little, if any, regard for sanitation or climate challenging fossil fuel usage; and also in the industrialized world, where virtually unrestricted fossil fuel usage is recognized as the major reason for climate change. 43 Wednesday November 16 - afternoon / Mercoledì 16 Novembre - pomeriggio CLOSING SESSION - Salone San Giovanni h. 14:30 - 16:40 Which waste management and circular economy options in the large world’s cities Chair / Presidente: R. Cossu (IT) In our rapidly urbanizing global society, solid waste management is a key challenge facing all the large world’s cities. Circular economy offers a great opportunity for optimising waste management strategies but an integration among the various options appears necessary in order to manage the thousands of tons of waste which are daily produced in any large city. The roundtable will discuss waste management strategies in paradigmatic cities located in different continents such as Sydney (AU), Shanghai (CN), Bogotá (CO), Hamburg (DE), Athens (GR) and Naples (IT). Constraints and advantages in applying the Circular Economy concepts to these different social end economic contests will be discussed with eminent scientists and delegates from the above mentioned cities. 44 Thursday November 17 / Giovedì 17 Novembre TECHNICAL TOURS Four guided technical tours of real scale plants operating in the production of energy from biomass and waste both by means of thermal and biological processes have been arranged for Thursday 17th November: 1.Bio Treatment plant in Camposampiero (approx. 1hr from Venice), managed by Etra Spa 2.Anaerobic Digestion plant in Bassano del Grappa (approx. 1hr 30mins from Venice), managed by Etra Spa 3.
