PRESENTATION
The production of energy from alternative sources and its impact on climate
change are among the main strategic tools implicated in the sustainable development of our society. Numerous types of biomass and wastes contribute
towards the production of energy and reduction in the use of fossil fuels by
means of biological, chemical and thermal processes. Existing biomass and
waste to energy technologies are currently undergoing rapid development. Despite growing interest in the use of these technologies, in many countries their
implementation remains limited.
Advances in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass
and waste will represent central debate topics of the sixth edition of the Venice
Symposia. The following sub-topics will also be discussed: combustion, anaerobic digestion, biomass to energy, alternative thermal treatments, strategies and
policies, other waste-to-energy options. Particular attention will be paid to the
characteristics of combustible products generable from different approaches:
SRF, biochar, biodiesel and other products suitable for a decentralized exploitation of the energy content of waste and biomass.
The Symposium is organized by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG)
and Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Venezia, with the scientific support
of the Padova, Hokkaido, Queensland, Rostock, Trento, Tsinghua and Hamburg
University of Technology.
PRESENTAZIONE
e rifiuti. Verranno dettagliatamente discussi i seguenti argomenti: combustione,

Meeting point: in front of the entrance of the Cathedral
Price per person: Euro 49,00 / Duration: approx. 1 hour
Saint Mark’s Basilica is Venice’s major must-see. Crowded with visitors during
the day, the Basilica becomes a silent temple of worship as the evening falls.
You will have the privilege to enjoy an evening tour after the church has closed
to the general public. Its distinguishing Byzantine character appears particularly
on the great mosaics illustrating St. Marco’s tales, as well as the scenes of the
Old and New Testament. You will better appreciate them by way of the dramatic
illumination.
Please note that both tours have a minimum number of participants and they will
not be activated if this number is not reached. Advanced booking is strongly suggested. Please contact Bassani Agency at the registration desk.

of Le Vignole, Sant’Erasmo and San Francesco del Deserto.
The island of Burano with its brightly colored houses will come into view, followed by its neighbors Torcello and Mazzorbo. You will then sail past the island of
Murano, well-known throughout the world for the delicate masterpieces created
by its glassmakers. Sailing around the Arsenale, the Galleon will reach the small
islands of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Giorgio.
The Galleon will then head towards Venice and, while sailing the Canal of the Giudecca, you will be welcomed back by a breathtaking view of Saint Mark’s basin
and the historical palaces and hotels of the ancient city.
Musical entertainment will be arranged during the night.
As places are limited, we advise you book as early as possible by contacting the
Organising Secretariat at the registration desk.
Wednesday 16th November / Mercoledì 16 Novembre
h.18.00 Farewell Cocktail Party
Price: included in the entrance fee
Have you ever tried “cicchetti”? If not, you cannot really miss Venice 2016 farewell
party!
To celebrate the closure of the conferece, all delgates are warmly invited to join us
for an evening of friendship and merriment in the beautiful setting of San Giovanni
Evangelista.
Local wines and tasty appetizers (cicchetti) will be served as our way to say thank
you to those who attended the conference.
Cicchetti are small snacks or side dishes, similar in concept to Spanish tapas,
which are typically eaten accompanied by a small glass of wine.
Common cicchetti include tiny sandwiches, plates of olives or other vegetables,
halved hard boiled eggs, small servings of a combination of one or more of seafood, meat and vegetable ingredients laid on top of a slice of bread or polenta, and
very small servings of typical full-course plates.

Workshop: WtE - Experiences projects and expectations
Chair / Presidente: L. Lombardi (IT)
The IWWG Thermal Treatment Task Group has oriented its activities in gathering
evidences that Waste-to-Energy treatments give an essential contribution to reaching the goals of technical reliability, environmental sustainability and economic
viability in waste management systems.
WtE plants projects are presently quite a few in Western Europe and the interest
is moving towards new markets including the Eastern European and growing economies such as China.

WORKSHOP: Waste biorefinery
h. 11:10 - 12:40
Chair / Presidente: L. Alibardi (GB), A. Muntoni (IT)
In 2015 the European Commission launched an ambitious plan to implement
the circular economy concept for the European Union. The European economic
system has to move towards a sustainable, low carbon, resource efficient and
competitive economy able to maintain value of products, materials and resources
and minimize waste. The benefits should be a boost to European competitiveness, new business opportunities and the establishment of more efficient ways of
producing and consuming. Implementation of a circular economy concepts in the
waste management sector will require full exploitation of values and resources for
all type of waste materials. For the management of organic waste fractions (food
waste, agro-industrial waste, biowaste), the biorefinery concept represents a new
frontier able to maximise conversion and extraction of high value or added value
resources (bio-products, bio-fuels). The IWWG workshop on Waste Biorefinery
is aimed discussing potential, uncertainties and direction of development for the
implementation of biorefinery chains for organic waste management.

WORKSHOP: Health and environmental risks in sewage sludge
and other organic waste
Chair / Presidente: S. Delson, G. Kladnik, M. Moore (US)
The workshop will discuss the importance of either improving traditional methods
for recovering energy from waste and destroying all substances of concern in
wastewater and sewage sludge, or to find and embrace new waste treatment
technologies that can: reduce/eliminate GHG emissions; keep decomposing residuals out of the environment; not use fossil fuel, and destroy hazardous and
potentially hazardous chemical and biological substances in our waste streams.
While progress has been made in dealing with these challenges through improved water and solid waste treatment systems and increased recycling of many
waste materials, there is room for significant improvement in the treating of wastewaters, solid wastes, and in energy and valuable by-product recovery from these
wastes. This is especially true in the Developing World where there is often little,
if any, regard for sanitation or climate challenging fossil fuel usage; and also in the
industrialized world, where virtually unrestricted fossil fuel usage is recognized as
the major reason for climate change.

CLOSING SESSION - Salone San Giovanni h. 14:30 - 16:40
Which waste management and circular economy options in the
large world’s cities
Chair / Presidente: R. Cossu (IT)
In our rapidly urbanizing global society, solid waste management is a key challenge facing all the large world’s cities. Circular economy offers a great opportunity
for optimising waste management strategies but an integration among the various
options appears necessary in order to manage the thousands of tons of waste
which are daily produced in any large city.
The roundtable will discuss waste management strategies in paradigmatic cities located in different continents such as Sydney (AU), Shanghai (CN), Bogotá
(CO), Hamburg (DE), Athens (GR) and Naples (IT).
Constraints and advantages in applying the Circular Economy concepts to these
different social end economic contests will be discussed with eminent scientists
and delegates from the above mentioned cities.

Herambiente was born out of a desire to concentrate Hera Group’s exclusive
expertise and extensive plant resources in a new company that would be better
positioned to take advantage of the development prospects for the Italian market,
which is served by highly fragmented companies and by a plant infrastructure
that is insufficient for dealing with an annual demand of over 160 million tonnes
of waste. The company is owned by Hera Group, one of Italy’s leading multiutility companies, which provides environmental, water and energy services (distribution and
sale of methane gas, electricity and district heating). Its original business model and careful and sustainable management of its resources have led it to occupy a prominent role among the national leaders in the
sector, not least because of its capacity for environmental innovation.
