Michele Montemurro is graduated in Architecture in 1989 at IUAV of Venice. He won a
CNR scholarship in 1993 and become PhD in architectural and urban design in 2000.
From 2004 is assistant professor in the Department DICAR of the Polytechnic of Bari and
teaches architectural and urban design. From 2015 he is representative in the Senate of
Politecnico di Bari and delegate of The Rector for orienting. Now he teaches in Politecnico
di Bari and in University of Basilicata.
His research focuses on new models of urban settlements and their relationship with
consolidated city.
He carries out a systematic publishing activity about the stone construction and its
learning, the form of the Mediterranean architecture and the form of the
contemporary city (consisting of more than 50 publications), the morphological
analysis of forma urbis, and the historical configuration of landscape layouts. He won
several research founding like FRA in 1997, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2013 and PRIN in
1999, 2004, 2007.
He was together with Claudio D’Amato Guerrieri and Francesco Defilippis, author
and designer of the Exhibition “La città di pietra” alla X Biennale di Architettura di
Venezia, (2006)
From 2014 he has signed, together with Annabruna Menghini for the ICAR
Department, a MoU between ATKP of Albania and Politecnico di Bari for a work of
research focused on landscape, urban and architectural heritage of Albania. Now he
is working on the relation between city and water as a specific condition of the more
general question of the relationship between city and nature. In particular he is
facing three study cases of lake-cities in Albania as Kukes, Skhoder and Pogradec.
The last research that is starting now is focused on the city of Saranda and the
archeological site of Butrint.
Experienced in international competitions, he cultivated the professional career in
France and Italy, taking part in design team for French Pavillon in Seville World
Expo (1992), realizing private houses (1996-2013), auditorium (Matera 2001),
parcelling plan (val Basento 2003), private and public facilities (1994 - 2012). He
wins best architect mention in In/Arch-Ance Puglia 2014. Lecturing and tutoring in
international workshop (Rebuild the Urban Form, Monopoli 2013; Architettura per lo
sport, Gallipoli 2012).
He took part in many international congress with his papers as S.ARCH in Budva
MONTENEGRO (2015), in 2-ICAUD Conference, Tirana (2014), in Rural Areas: Exploring
Challenges and Opportunities for their Conservation and Development, Birzeit, Palestine
(2014), in 1st ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ARCHITECTURE AND
CIVIL ENGEENERING, Singapore (2013), in Changing Cities, Skiatos, Greece (2013).
In 2015 he founded together with C. Moccia, AB. Menghini, F.Defilippis, L. Ficarelli the
research group UrbanFormGrammars.
