3 Red is the colour that lights up the new line Art and textiles come together in the designs of Fabio De Poli Sensitive, narrative and sustainable textiles My accent on Manteco by Cinzia Dugo Elegantly daring, while moving naturally and feeling the freedom of one’s body. Without fear, prejudice or preconceived positions. There is nothing more satisfying for a society - always in hurry or escaping - than to be able to touch the essence of an object, the purity of an element and the quality of a product. The discovery that a fabric can also throb with life, has a history of its own and possesses memories, loves the atmosphere of home and cultivates the roots of tradition, while still moving ahead and finding time to ‘travel’, signifies identifying the cultures of the world in the name of innovation. A whole world of values and principles that have been defended and promoted over the years can be found in the traces left by a Tuscan Made in Italy company that intends to win its challenge with the future: it aims to give character to its designs through the different qualities of its soft and heavy fabrics, although pure and open to chromatic contaminations. Manteco’s mission is to construct and dress free minded personalities. The firm has always aimed to be a protagonist in the world of textiles. And it has been precisely this for over seventy years thanks to a policy that is unique and collective at the same time. The strength of the group is based on expressing talent, creativity, attention to detail, care for the quality of raw materials and environmental sustainability. At the same time, however, it has also room for vocations, potential and relationships between man and textiles, which have changed and evolved alongside all the great social transformations. Manteco’s history is long. Even so, the quality of its textiles does not depend on time or the passing of the years, but is due to the experience and passion of the company founders and those who made the most of this heritage. The age differences appear to be intangible between the father, Franco, and his sons, Marco and Matteo. When I met them it was like discovering the strength of a single great and ageless passion that divides the route, but not the goal, into three different directions. The destination comes from a love of the raw materials and arrives at beautiful expressions of the metamorphosis of colour. I could watch Fabio de Poli, captured at his best as a wonderful narrator of colour, for hours in absolute silence. He is a versatile artist who knows exactly how to fill in a space and moulds it with all his unmistakable sinuosity. Light and colour are inalienable accomplices. There is a new trait de union between the C and the O of Manteco that makes the two letters appear even closer. It is an accent, a minute remnant of fabric dressed in red that De Poli has created to spotlight the choices of a company that has decided to unite art, fashion and culture. After many years of creative work and vitality, Manteco feels the need to feature its progress by creating a new accent, “Accento” a new line that is essential, pure, refined and fresh and accompanied by an original artistic vision of textiles. Every Manteco product, especially those linked to the new collection, becomes an instrument, a chance to spread knowledge and promote a very profound and original cultural operation. Every moment in the history of this family shows a continuity that humanely and professionally enriches it. Intelligent collectors and lovers of contemporary art, Franco, Marco and Matteo Mantellassi have thought up a new line for the company. “Accento” is the site and space where art and textiles meet. Talented Fabio De Poli, designer, painter and sculptor, winner of the Andersen Prize, designer of the windows of the Meyer in Florence, with work on display in the MoMA in New York, has been called in to paint this new sensitivity and cultural dimension. “We have developed a project that evolves around Maestro De Poli – Franco tells us – this great painter will not only create a graphic campaign for Manteco to promote the Accento line, but will also carry out a collection of works composed with the fabrics produced by the company”. The idea immediately aroused a great creative ferment in De Poli. “As soon as I touch the Manteco textiles – he confesses – they give me a clear sensation of quality and beauty, I have and will use them as colour for a series of unique works. Unlike Matisse who used arabesque textiles in his paintings, I will instead mount them up, sew, cut and assemble them to create a great palette to select from”. Before I leave the firm, I decide to take a last look at the textiles with Fabio. The conversation is once more made up of an exchange of glances searching for chromatic vibrations, a shade of brown, a sunny yellow, a dark smoky grey. Both of us listen to the words of the colour. Il modo migliore per interpretare la contemporaneità e rendersi competitivo è traghettarsi nel futuro attraverso un confronto continuo con i mercati”. 6 The interview Discovering the ‘dolce vita’ of textiles and its path towards sustainable creativity This journey among the ideas, sentiments and aspirations behind Manteco fabrics comes alive every day. I meet Matteo. He has an intensely concentrated expression. We must talk about many things, the textiles and the places I have to see, but he knows exactly what he is doing. He starts from the beginning: the firm’s important origins are based on the study of raw materials. “Knowledge of raw materials is fundamental for obtaining the quality of a fabric and for experimenting innovative products. The raw materials processed by Manteco stand out for their authenticity and the various types of product give an added value that allows us to obtain excellent and exclusive results of quality”. We have a sixth sense for wool and 'test' it every day so as to project its potential into the future The brilliance of colour acts as a guide inside the modern factory at Prato, where both people and equipment are important for creating and testing fabric performance. Matteo removes some wool from a glass vial in the laboratory-room. It is an amazing experience. The wool reacts to this tactile ‘test’ like a living creature: it not only possesses solidity and personality, but is delicate and soft at the same time, establishing an immediate understanding with the bare skin. “We have ambitious ideas – adds Matteo – which are to obtain a fabric that blends beauty with top quality, while exploiting its characteristics of purity and limiting the use of chemical additives; our daily commitment is to ‘test’ the wool and imagine its potential, propose and adapt it to the requirements of our times or, better still, to the future request, because our job consists in indicating possible new trends at least 2 years in advance of today’s fashion. Every day brings exciting challenges that feed our enthusiasm and identify a point of balance that points towards perfection”. A contagious passion that has helped the company to grow from generation to generation Our journey continues. Marco helps me discover more about Manteco. “Nowadays” – he says – “the secret that holds the firm together is a respect for tradition and the courage to innovate. Seventy years ago my grandfather had the foresight to invest in the potential of textiles and my father, in his turn, managed to help it expand with new creative and productive ideas. The traditions of the Mantellassi family are expressed in the high quality of our products and the contemporary element comes from the strong personality of the rich, essential and modern fabrics”. Separated and at the same time united by the tidy and reassuring chaos on a desk covered with numbers, magazines, samples and family photos, Marco continues his lucid analysis about a company that has managed to carve a place for itself at the heights of the international fashion industry. “The firm has grown over the years – he points out – thanks to the high level of the performances reached by our collections." Essentiality, be Tradition and innovation, classical and contemporary, a soft and rough texture, face and back side. The idea was to create an ageless product that could convert what is routine into something totally original and that goes beyond superficiality to interpret requirements in line with evolutions and implosions. “A fabric that tries to return to the essentials, without any frills or decorative elements, and characterised by a structure that creates a simple and intimate relationship with the wearer”. Marco describes how his passion for textiles came about. I like the frankness with which he, as the son of the owner and an open minded and circumspect businessman, reveals his experience. “I joined the company – he continues – with the idea of improving performance, qualifying the brand at the highest levels and promoting a Made in Italy product that could 7 Manteco, a history made up of choices Like the threads in a fabric, there is nothing that Manteco leaves behind. Words, gestures and actions are full of significance. Nothing is left to chance; every detail and every component shows attention, sensibility and care towards the requirements of the client. The power of choice is a departure and an arrival point in the world of textiles. Franco, the founder of the Manteco textile company, knows this very well. Franco starts off by saying “I like to arrive at the heart of things, because I have always pursued an idea of the future that can be expressed through work and research and by a harmonious relationship between identity and quality. The most wonderful memory I have of the origins of the firm is my father, a fine example of creative and entrepreneurial intelligence, who in the 1940’s, – at a particularly difficult time, when the world war was underway managed to create this business for what was to become an important reality”. Another important memory then takes over. eauty and style not only be appreciated throughout the world, but also decisively open up foreign markets. I was in fact able to transform my ambitions into fully achieved goals, in spite of this period of general crisis, thanks to the excellent cooperation and convergence of skills that has always been one of the strong points in our brand”. Today Manteco fabrics speak many languages, with collections studied down to the last detail, while important clients from markets in Europe, the Far East and the United States impatiently await its new collections. “I spend all my energy on extending the quality of a family project that has never stopped believing in itself. I am supported by a network and a creative administration and sales management that operates with the most professionalism throughout the world”. “I was only a teenager when my father taught me to distinguish quality of fabrics and recognize their characteristics by the touch”. “The sector of research and development, the heart of the firm, works around the concept of sorting every day – he reflects – and this is where ideas and projects are created and emerge”. I then ask him what a product needs to be successful. “It must be alive” – he answers without hesitation – “environmentally friendly, reproducible and safe, capable of supplying suitable industrialization for the fashion industry”. Manteco has always nourished itself with culture and contrasting comparisons. In Franco’s opinion this is an added value that has allowed the brand to reach an internationally appreciated success. “People who are daring, believe and renovate will always find an open door waiting for them. The best way of interpreting the contemporary world and becoming competitive is to ferry oneself into the future through a continuous comparison with the markets”. 8 Carta della sostenibilità Manteco for planet, un obiettivo di crescita Il punto di partenza di un progetto destinato a durare for Planet M anteco fa suo il principio della sostenibilità ambientale. M anteco makes the principle of environmental sustainability its own. Manteco for planet is the new slogan that aims to spread the commitment of the company from the ethical point of view and regards respect and protection of nature and the environment in which we live. A passion for textiles has led to a continuous search for innovative solutions and the integration of sustainability values in the company’s way of life, so that good business practices and management have become a further objective for growth. The firm has drawn up a Charter of Sustainable Values as a starting point for a project that will continue over the years. The Manteco management, the staff and collaborators and persons outside the organization are requested to take inspiration from the contents of the Charter. Manteco works to reduce all social and environmental impact in favour of a use of pure, sustainable, regenerated or recycled raw materials, to direct its processing towards products of transformation that minimise the release of chemical substances in the environment, to keep any risks connected with their use under control and to cut down transportation requirements in favour of a short production chain. Traceability is another priority instrument that allows the firm to collect the necessary information for obtaining a transparent report on the achievement status of these goals. As for its sustainability project, Manteco will shortly be drawing up its first report, based on international guidelines, covering ongoing initiatives and proposed future programme.
