FOREWORD
The increasing demand for transport services needs an efficient transport system
and has to tackle the problem caused by transport, congestion, harmful effects to
the environment and public health, and the heavy toll of road accidents with an
unacceptable number of victims and social costs.
During the last decade Automotive Industries and Governments have been actively
involved in improving road safety through both accident prevention and injury
reduction.
In this scenario, the 12th ATA EL symposium will be devoted to present and discuss
the state of the art of the technologies and application which are the enabling
factors toward the implementation of “e-safety” concept for improving road safety
by the use of Intelligent Integrated Road Safety Systems.
These systems based on new Information and Communication Technologies and a
new generation of active safety and drivers assistance systems offer a great
potential to reach this objective.
Cooperative systems, taking into account not just the driver and the vehicle but
also the manoeuvre area around the vehicle, will enable essential safety
information to be exchanged between the vehicle and other vehicles and the
infrastructure to assess the risk of an accident, warn the driver or initiate
appropriate actions.
The ATA EL Symposium will take place in Parma at the University Campus (16 –18
June 2004) in conjunction with the ”Intelligent Vehicle Symposium” (14 – 17 June
2004) organized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. and the
University of Parma.
The two events will partially overlap with joint sessions:
- one day session for scenario and results of International Projects on
Wednesday 16th of June;
- one day for prototypes demonstration on Thursday 17th of June.
The purpose of the co-location of the two symposia is to offer the attendees the
opportunity to meet a larger number of specialists and invited speakers who will
present and discuss alternative scenarios, technological trends, scientific and
applicatory aspects of the technologies for intelligent vehicles.
A joint registration to the two events will be possible and will allow to attend both
events at a “reduced price".

PARMA is a city of aristocratic cultural tradition, rich in precious works of art and
memories of its past as a capital city, celebrated for its greatest sons and the artists
who worked there - from Benedetto Antelami to Salimbene, from Correggio to
Parmigianino, from Bodoni to Verdi and Toscanini - the poets, writers and directors
inspired by it, above all Stendhal, who recreated the city in his story about the
"Chartreuse".
Parma is also worldwide renowned for its culinary tradition, which can be easily
tasted in many "osterie" and restaurants in the city centre and in the surrounding
countryside.

between Milan and Bologna and close to many important Italian cities (Florence,

Guided visits and tours will be arranged on occasion of the Symposium for

atmosphere", showing you all aspects of this city (history, Parma's gastronomic
culture, the musical tradition, the shopping in the city centre).
We also suggest you to visit the charming surroundings of Parma (Colorno,
Torrechiara, Soragna, Bardi, Fontanellato) where very famous castles were built in
the past and Busseto, Verdi's native town.
Many well renowned cities, famous for the artistic beauties, are quite close to
Parma: Florence and Venice can be reached by train in 2 and 3 hours respectively.
Moreover you can reach Mantua (60 km), Bologna (90 km), Verona (105 km),
Ferrara (137 km), Ravenna (182 km).
Seaside resorts are easily accessible as well, by train or by car: La Spezia (and the
Cinque Terre Riviera) 109 km, Rimini and the Adriatic coast 180 km, Viareggio and
the Versilia area 150 km.

The tour begins with a visit to a Salumificio in Langhirano (producer of Parmesan
ham and other pork products) , to appreciate the whole range of the processing of
the “Prosciutto di Parma”. You will continue along the roads of “Wines and
Flavours” to reach Torrechiara, to held a guided visit at the wonderful and
renowned Castle (it was the setting of the film Lady Hawk).
At the end of the visit, wine-tasting in a cellar of wines of the Parma hills “Vini dei
Colli di Parma”.
Lunch in a typical restaurant.

Afternoon: transfer to the area of Zibello, the town famous for the production of
“Culatello” , considered the King of the pork products. At a producer premises, you
could observe the different seasoning phases of this marvellous product, which is
appreciated all over the world; at the end of the visit, tasting of Culatello and typical
wines.
You could end the tour with a guided visit of a cheese factory, to get to know the
creative cycle of the Parmesan cheese “Parmigiano Reggiano”, and final tasting.

and artistic value - the Estense Castle, symbol of the dominating Seigniory; the
San Giorgio Cathedral; Piazza Ariostea; Palazzo dei Diamanti). In the late morning,
transfer to the Adriatic seaside (the Po river Delta, in the Ferrara province) and

spend for a walk in the well-known Via Ceccarini in the town centre, for shopping
