Reto Stöckenius, Direttore Dear Guests, Before allowing your senses to indulge in the sweetness of chocolate, the delight of sparkling bubbles, the deliciousness of refined dishes, the splendour of a breathtaking view, surrounded by trees and flowers of astounding beauty, the passion for outdoor sports or the harmony of the notes of important events, I would like you to join us in a “celebration”. At the centre of the latter are four outstanding professionals, who have been collaborating with Villa Principe Leopoldo Hotel & Spa, for the last 20 and 15 years and who have greatly contributed to making it what it is today. And they have done so with the sensitivity and enthusiasm that only those who really love their job are capable of expressing… Professionalism, skill, passion, creativity: all individual gifts that impact and thus characterize all the events taking place at the Villa. For example, the exclusive evenings dedicated to the “Dîner Ephémère - Möet & Chandon” or the one that, as one of the main highlights of “2009 S. Pellegrino Saveurs Ticino”, will be held at the Principe Leopoldo Restaurant on April 19th. Spring at the Villa, besides being characterized by several events, has brought with it an important novelty: all our 37 rooms have been renovated and refurbished and rendered fresh, airy and bright to offer you the most splendid of stays. Your presence here and your appreciation are a continuous acknowledgement of our work and efforts. The very best we could ever hope for. Porcelaine wedding and crystal wedding anniverseries, this time, do not concern a couple who have been wed for 15 or for 20 years. Today, we are celebrating the happy “union” between Villa Principe Leopoldo Hotel & Spa and four of its most precious and loyal collaborators. For several lustrums now, these professionals have contributed to constantly elevating the standing of Villa Principe Leopoldo Hotel & Spa with the aim of offering its selected clientele superb quality service, which is at once surprising and delightful in the context of the splendid framework of this fascinating Villa. In such a way, the Executive Chef Dario Ranza’s Cuisine, the Maître Sommelier Gabriele Speziale’s wine-cellar, the supervision of the Maître d’Hôtel Claudio Recchia and the Chef Barman Mario Lanfranconi’s Bar are a blend of refined traditions and original innovations that are in step with the times and forever-changing tastes. As to what their “secrete formula” is, apparantly each one has his own: in Chef Ranza’s «there are three main ingredients: good collaborators, the possibility of expressing one’s own creativity and passion joined to perseverance». Maître Sommelier Speziale is certain of one thing: in a job like his own, which is closely connected to that of the kitchen Chef, a constant exchange of ideas is necessary and when these are completely different, one must let ideas settle down a bit, until the best decision becomes clear: «harmonious results may be achieved either by ageement or by contrast; the important thing is never losing sight of the objective that’s to be reached…». What is particularly striking for Maître d’Hôtel, Claudio Recchia, when weighing his twenty years spent on the Collina d’Oro in the balance, is the priviledge he has had of feeling enriched as a person, thanks to the interaction with collegues and the people he’s met on the job, learning a great deal about life and being able to apply this also to his private sphere, while the boundary line between private and professional life becomes more and more indistinct… While Chef Barman Lanfranconi throughout the years has learnt to mix together the wish to improve, great collaborators and a touch of psychology to offer each customer “his own cocktail”, the one most suited to him and that therefore will be sure to please. After all, one is able to stay in one place for a long time… only if one feels “at home”! * I prezzi in Euro sono indicativi e soggetti a variazioni di cambio * Prices in Euros are only indicative and subject to variations in the exchange rate Le Dîner Ephémère, is a unique and intense experience arising from the combination of Haute Cuisine and Grand Vintage Moët & Chandon. Dîner Ephémère Moët & Chandon Legendary Vintage Years Grand Vintage Collection 1995 e 1990 Grand Vintage 2003 white and rosé The Moët & Chandon 2003 vintage is an exceptional champagne and the result of a year that was characterized by extreme climatic conditions: frost, hail, heat waves; an early grape harvest and a not very abundant one contributed to the complex, mature and strong personality of this wonderful vintage. Similarly to 2003, even the 1995 and 1990 vintage years were marked by an extraordinary climate and defined as the “sunny” vintage years, whose wines constitute a family, which this event wants to pay tribute to. Chocolate, a delicious seduction Eurochocolate The first Swiss edition of Eurochocolate will be held in Lugano, from March 26 th to March 29 th. The chocolate festival finally reaches Switzerland, where the “food of the gods” is not only a fundamental part of its national tradition but has always been considered, even here in Ticino, one of the most renowned symbols of “Swissness” in the world. A bewitching food, one engendering joys and temptations, its very name conceals its exceptional characteristics: Theobroma Cacao (called chocolate), in fact, means “food of the gods” (Theo = God + Broma = Food). Precious, exclusive, sophisticated, it is not by chance that chocolate was used only by Aztec kings, by the high officials of the empire and by high priests and that later it was used as currency in trade exchanges amongst the peoples of Central America. 1500 B.C. is the conventionally acknowledged date of when chocolate was first discovered and used in Southern Mexico. It was imported to Europe in 1502 by Cristopher Columbus (in the form of Cocoa beans) and by Cortes in 1521, in the form of cocoa paste that could be melted in water and consumed as a drink. The chocolate Easter egg dates to the time of Louis XIV, the Roi Soleil, and was invented by certain creative chefs of his Court. The tradition of connecting the egg to Easter has ancient pagan roots. The San Grato Botanical Park Renowned for its azaleas, besides for the multi-coloured rhododendrons and camelias, the park offers visitors a rich variety of plants and flowers. It is a true feast for the eyes especially in April and May during the blossoming season. The park, which is included among the natural sites of national importance with its landscape and breathtaking view of the gulf of Lugano, may be reached following the “flower trail” from the summit of Mount San Salvatore and passing through the village of Carona. The park is located on the Arbostora, a hill overlooking the Ceresio, part of the territory of Carona. Several paths have been created highlighting particular characteristics of the area: • the fairytale path near the playground illustrates the fairytale on the azalea by means of panels and pictures • a path of about 2 Km connects several panoramic lookout points. The most famous mountain peaks and places of the crossborder region are indicated on several panels • a relaxing path (1,5 Km) was developed joining together the most level and easy stretches inside the park • the botanical path, by means of several explicative panels, informs visitors on the park’s ornamental and spontaneous vegetation • the artistic path displays 23 works of art arranged along the path. The azalea in the language of flowers means “mysterious happiness”. If it is red in colour, however, it implies revenge, if yellow it is telling the recepient that he or she is a false person. Azaleas are members of the Rhododendrum genus and of the Ericaceous family. These plants, which are indigenous to wooded and humid high mountain areas, where they grow spontaneously near streams and in shaded spots even above 4000 m. in altitude, come from Asia (Nepal, China, Japan, North Korea and Vietnam), North America (Florida) and from Northern Europe. Azaleas must be watered frequently using calcareous-free water (possibly rain water) so as to maintain its substrate always moist; this is why it is useful to keep vases on a layer of wet pebbles, The Flower of Mysterious Happiness nebulizing the shrub’s foliage frequently. The azalea was already known in antiquity, since the flowers of many species, especially Asian ones, are particularly rich in nectar, although, the latter in certain typologies may even be poisonous. Music is in the Air Greatly looked forward to by classical music lovers, executed by top international musicians, Lugano Festival will be back once again from April 20 th to June 5 th and will be open to other artistic forms as well. Among the Festival’s truly international appointments, the spotlight once again focuses on the Martha Argerich project, featuring the great Argentinean pianist, young and affirmed artists and presitgious personalities from the concert scenario; it will also feature the Orchestra of Italian language Switzerland (Osi) and the Rtsi Choir, two groups that have become much appreciated and famous even beyond regional borders. And, from one Festival to another, as Andreas Wyden, organizer of the event, discloses to us, it is “The Osi with its Choir of Italian language Switzerland that will be back (after 8 years) on stage in Piazza della Riforma, in occasion of Estival Jazz, accompanying Rick Wakeman, famous English keyboard player, who used to belong to the Yes group”. Estival Jazz (Mendrisio June 26 th - 27 th and Lugano July 2 nd - 3 rd - 4 th), the most important free of charge Festival in Europe, today is, in fact, the most prestigious musical appointment South of the Alps. It owes its fame, above all, to the superb quality of the artists that have been its protagonists from the very start. Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Keith Jarrett, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, BB King, Chick Corea, The Manhattan Transfer, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Noa, Oscar de Leon, Jon Hendricks, Paco de Lucia, Van Morrison, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Khaled are just some of the more than 300 artists and groups that have animated Estival from the time it was created (1979). Jazz used to be the only musical genre proposed in Estival’s program but this is no longer so. For several years now and with great success, it has also featured proposals of “world music”, to allow the public to perceive the cultural and musical fascination of an offer that is still, in part, considered “exotic” and for the most part not very well known.
