The eleventh edition of Maravee brings back the idea of a festival geographically articulated over the local area, a previous approach which has not been seen since the festival began to concentrate all the events in its current home in the welcoming halls of the Castle of Susans in 2010. The festival has always enjoyed a spirit of constant growth, both in terms of content and for its artistic, scientific, institutional and logistical collaborations, and this year sees clear and concrete proof of a great leap forward in this sense. This year there has been a broad range of events and exhibitions over a wide number of dates, starting with the summer preview in Pordenone, then the great inaugural event at the castle, followed by the exhibition of an inaugural performance at the Visionario in Udine and ending with the exhibition at the Obalne Galerije in Koper, continuing a collaboration begun in 2009. All of this is also accompanied by many other conferences, meetings and events during the time the exhibition is open in Susans The growth of collaborations has led to great acclaim from both press and public, putting Maraee on the front pages of the culture section of many publications. These collaborations have brought together major international contemporary artists, and for this edition have led to the production of both an artwork and an artist’s book by the great Catalan director Bigas Luna, and exhibition of a body of photographs from the Tina Modotti archives of Cinemazero. It would be nice to think that the success of this edition, titled Maravee Eros, is connected to the idea of love and passion, two words which perfectly describe the approach of our artistic director and the entire working group. The same dedication has been shown by all the artists involved, and we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks for the generosity and commitment they have shown through their artworks and performances The magic and the wonder of Maravee lies precisely in this complex and articulated group collaboration, united by the firm conviction that the beauty and ethical value of art can and should participate towards the collective state of wellbeing. After considering environmental issues such as territory and environmental wellbeing in Maravee Domus and the question of the world of work in Maravee Fàbrica, the eleventh edition of the Maravee festival now turns its attention to personal identity through emotions springing from passion and the sentiments. Maravee Eros is a homage to Tina Modotti and her work, on the seventieth anniversary of her death. The exhibition will examine the more feminine side of her complex personality: woman and artist, Hollywood star of the silent age, model of great painters and photographers and of course photographer herself, where she was able to express above all her artistic modernity. Maravee’s homage to Tina Modotti is absolutely contemporary, and interprets Eros in a way which is subtle and never gratuitously provocative. It addresses a varied range of subjects which have always concerned the art world and the lives all of us. It examines them through photography, video, sculpture, installation, video mapping, concerts and video installation. International artists such as David LaChapelle, Nobuyoshi Araki and the Catalan director Bigas Luna come together with local and Italian artists to give us a choral response to the subject of the exhibition. The Castle of Susans- the fascinating historical location which has become the Friulano home for the festival – has been joined this year by a number of other venues: the cloister of the Biblioteca Civica in Pordenone, the Visionario in Udine and the Loggia gallery in Koper, the prestigious exhibition venue for the Obalne Galerije. Thanks to the forward looking ideas of Maravee, all these organisations have become actively involved, weaving a network of connections across the local area and across borders. It is precisely this dialogue between the use of different artistic languages and between different host venues which is a sign of the perseverance and tenacity of the festival. This project continues to involve not just public bodies, but also private companies, not simply as sponsors, but rather as partners in the initiative, sharing with them the planning and the whole journey towards the realisation of the event. I’d like to wish “Maravee” every possible success, and to thank the organisers for their constant and unwavering commitment. Now in its third year, our partnership with Maravee has become a genuine collaboration working towards a long-term vision, and with Maravee Eros, we have enjoyed a fantastic reception from both press and public, exceeding even the great response we sawn in the previous years. We are delighted to participate in the development of the growth of this project, both by making our family’s castle available for the exhibition- alongside the prestigious new venues which are included this year- and by contributing in a concrete way to the production and organisation of the event by supplying products, materials and services through our company. In particular we were very happy to participate in the creation of the evocative scenography and look forward to an evercloser collaboration between art and design. This great adventure travels on, supported by two fundamental collaborations: one between art and business - both catalysts of the spirit of our times, seeking environmentally friendly innovation and research - and the other between public and private. On this question we are convinced that since culture belongs to everyone, entrepreneurs, too, are called on to support its development by making their intellectual and technical resources available. We believe that a rigorous approach to planning coupled with craft skills, technological innovation and a care for ethical and environmental values can open new horizons for creative research, in an industrial context as much as in a strictly cultural one. The way forward must make space for emotions, a subject which this year’s festival has made into a genuine driving force for its research. In this context we hope to be able to instigate collaborations with other companies who share our convictions that it is necessary to look beyond our own factory walls if we wish to be able to develop cultural projects capable of taking us all into the future, both locally and globally. Visual art is brought together with other creative languages such as theatre, dance, music and design in a complex event where there are no clear linguistic divisions. It is therefore difficult to distinguish between theatre and artistic performance, scenery design and visual art installation. Differently from previous editions, there is also a homage in this year’s choice of theme, rooted in the past and reminding us that the strength of contemporary innovation depends on the relationship between parallels and differences with that which has gone before. The careful curatorial and critical outlook is rooted in sociological analysis, with a particular link to the ideas of Michel Maffesoli. This approach was developed in the first edition of Maravee in 2002, and confirmed in the first three years of the festival, based on the contemporary re-reading of annual celebrations. Once again Maravee confirms the intention to stage contemporary artists’ work in relation to themes which are deeply rooted in the collective experience, also considering their development in different ages. Moving from annual celebrations to ecological concerns, through the homage to nature intrinsic in such celebrations, and then moving onto themes of home and work, linked to territory and environmental wellbeing, Maravee has increasingly and more directly focussed on the individual. While previous editions highlighted its working and living identity, this year we enter the complexity of individual emotions, tied to passion and sentiment. All this is always tied to the two fundamental ideas of ethics and aesthetics. Maravee Eros pays homage to Tina Modotti and her work, on the seventieth anniversary of her death. Woman, photographer and revolutionary, she lived an adventurous life full of sacrifice, blood, romance, intrigue and death. Maravee wishes to honour the most feminine aspect of her complex identity. She was the Hollywood star of silent movies, the model of great photographers and painters, acclaimed by the newspapers of the time as a sensual and exotic beauty and known for the expressiveness of her face when acting, which was so much more controlled than other divas of silent cinema. In looking at this aspect of her persona, Maravee’s homage continues in a strictly contemporary key, moving the historical figure of Tina Modotti into the present through the subject of love as a bridge between different eras. There is great passion behind this homage, firstly from a curatorial point of view in the search for artists and work which could relate in different ways to the theme of Eros and that dedication to passion and beauty which characterised Tina Modotti. Secondly, but most importantly, this warm homage was developed by artists who produced video mapping, performance, photography and concerts for the occasion, re-reading her persona and work through their contemporary poetics. This is a homage which is certainly not a critical, historical or, even less, scientific re-reading of Tina’s work, which should be left to academics studying this extraordinary, internationally acclaimed Friulano woman and artist. As well as all the studies on her life, we are also in debt to the work of the Comitato Tina Modotti di Udine, led with passion and professionalism by the late Riccardo Toffoletti. The loan of photographs of Tina Modotti and Edward Weston by Cinemazero was also fundamental. They hold a huge archive of material dedicated to Tina Modotti and also cocurated the preview event in Pordenone. In remembering Tina, this year’s edition addresses an age-old and complex subject, often dealt with in art, but still controversial and which can paradoxically fall either into anachronism or censorship. The objective is that of keeping between these two extremes, focusing the attention on the “search engine” which has always sustained, fed and driven man’s existence: love as passion and devotion, carnal and visceral, of the intellect and of the senses, towards the other, be it person, nature or art itself. What emerges in any case is another fundamental paradigm for Maravee: the principle of relationship. In this case it is tied to erotic desire and attraction for someone or something, which art sublimates through imagination and fantasy. All the works and performances respect a specific register: the nudes, and any other reference to sensuality are never shown in a crude, gratuitous or provocative way, because they are sustained by an emotional experience, a kind of aura determined by love. Only in this way can erot- 1. Translated from: Jean Baudrillard, edited by Pina Lalli, Della seduzione, Bologna, Cappelli, 1980 2. Translated from: Catherine Hakim, Capitale erotico, Milan, Mondadori, 2012, pagg. 24 e 77. icism turn into slow or urgent seduction which, according to Baudrillard, was an aristocratic order of signs and rituals, favouring artifice. He gives us a wonderful definition: “a place of vertigo, eclipse, appearance and disappearance.”1 Seduction can happen suddenly, sometimes unexpectedly, casting a new light on life. Its primary characteristic is mystery, secrets, the ambiguous, sometimes indecipherable signs, of that which is shown, but only in part. Seduction is therefore a game of relationships which is born within an individual and fed by the gaze of another. As Catherine Hakim says about female eroticism, in being considered “a capital”, it is a “manifestation of creativity…with an anarchic character… which overturns and inhibits all social and political control.”2 The moment this dimension meets the gaze and participation of an artist their creativity is added together and the artwork produced makes the beauty of the relationship and the encounter hyperbolic and stigmatised. This happens even when the subject of the work is not a human nude, but a part of nature, since eroticism goes beyond the body and can be revealed in a flower or a composition in which the poetics of the artist resonate with sensuality and emotion. This subtle eroticism, based on passion for life, form and art, which characterised all of Tina’s work and existence, is the underlying theme of the entire event, explored over four different locations with exhibitions and events described in the following pages. 11 12 PORDENONE Chiostro Biblioteca Civica PREVIEW DI MARAVEE EROS 14 We Love Tina! Elisa Seravalli’s video mapping is a work which combines the most up to date experiments in architectural video mapping (the projection of images on real surfaces) with the technique of the mash-up, mixing different languages (photography, cinema, video…) to create a unique and evocative composition. The work was created especially for the occasion, based on work from the Tina Modotti archive at Cinemazero, and offers a contemporary re-reading of the sensitive and sensual image of Tina Modotti as a woman, as well as an artist and political activist. This point of view is quite in keeping with the entire festival, which centres around the idea of Eros as a vital energy which drives our thoughts through love: love as passion and dedication for that which is outside ourselves, be it a person, nature or art. This visionary tale told through images is designed to be projected onto the walls of the cloister Biblioteca Civica in Pordenone. The event will be accompanied by a soundtrack created by The Leaping Fish Trio, with Zeno De Rossi on drums, Enrico Terragnoli on banjo and electric guitar, Paolo Botti on viola, banjo, dobro, mandolin and harmonica. The castle of Susans has been the official home of Maravee since 2010, and this year the three floors of the castle host three exhibitions as well as the performances and events for the inauguration, which as ever, are based on the direct involvement of the public. After the preview in Pordenone with the show We Love Tina!, which was the first occasion to see Maravee Eros’ homage to Tina Modotti, the festival was inaugurated at the castle with a linguistic and poetic fusion which has become a defining feature of Maravee. Woven from the thread of a subtle and intriguing Eros, the exhibitions and performances transformed the prestigious historical location into a setting dedicated to desire, founded on the principle of relationships and passion. Drawing on the carefully created scenery design, intended to transform the rooms of the castle in theme with the subject of the event, all the exhibitions and performances- despite their individual identities- became part of the same “staging”. Contemporary female bodies hold a dialogue largely in black and white with Tina Modotti’s nudes and portraits, and all their female sensuality is given homage by very colourful images of fleshy and ambiguous flowers, often in a kind of tension between petals and sex A subtle game of flirting and pulling away, between petals and flowers, black and white and colour which unfolds along the course of the exhibition, in a close dialogue between artworks and artists from different eras. Sensi nudi is a homage to female Eros (but also male), which emerges at the limit of revealing and concealing. It keeps its distance from a direct and frontal approach to reality because it is examined through amorous feelings and poetic inspiration, rejecting provocation for provocation’s sake. As such, the exhibition privileges the relationship between single images rather than dividing them according to their author, subject or technique. In the large hall where the photography show is held, and where there is a sequence of photographs on the walls, we chose the challenge of putting the works of very different artists next to each other: artists from different times, with different styles, poetics and techniques. This often revealed curious parallels and differences in a dialogue that was supported throughout by the poetics of sensuality. We started from the passionate union between Tina Modotti and Edward Weston, both in art and life, in an intense love story that lasted between 1923 and 1926 in Mexico City. It is during this period that Weston defined his poetics, concentrating on the relations between form and object, realism and abstraction. He photographed Tina’s nudity and her face. He combined purist concerns and constructive synthesis with the exaltation of naturalism pouring into an obvious erotic drive. There is a subtle poetic inspiration, particularly in the portraits, where the misty, painterly atmosphere highlights the mystery and emotional intensity which were already present in Modotti’s modelling. She was a model, but she was also a student, because it was Weston who offered Tina her earliest inspiration for her own photographic work. Sarah Lowe describes this well in her essay 27 1. Translated from: Marianna Figarella, Edward Weston e Tina Modotti in Messico, Cinemazero, Pordenone, 2003 “The Immutable Still Lives of Tina Modotti: Fixing Form.”1 In her essay she outlines the concept of still lives (lives which are still), as opposed to still-lifes, a metaphor of key importance in her art, in the passage from the realist element to the symbolic plane. In order to pay homage to the close relationship between life and art that marked most of Modotti’s life - and in particular her relationship with Edward Weston and his artwork - this show displays both portraits and nudes of Tina by Weston, and some of her most important still life photographs. Images such as Roses and Calla lilies, taken in 1924 when Tina Lived in Mexico City with Weston, show how Modotti had artistically distanced herself from Weston’s objectivity in the name of a profound poetic subjectivity. Whilst these images are supported by a modern reflection on the relationship between subject and space (which is inversely proportional in the two images: the fullness of the roses and the void of the lilies) they “are reminiscent of the Decadentism of symbolist aesthetics”2. Leaping forward in time into the very contemporary we find a similarly significant reflection on the fleeting nature of things, with David LaChapelle’s four works from the series The Earth Laughs in Flowers. These are compositions of flower with a Flemish inspiration, where the flowers function as a critique of contemporary society. The flowers are set in very detailed arrangements, with perfectly focussed details. They make use of pictorial effects which are reminiscent of the painterly air of Weston’s portraits- obtained with very low light, very long exposure time and smoke in the air. Streaked tulips, fleshy roses, lilies and calla lilies, already evocative of many images throughout the history of painting, are portrayed at the peak of their beauty with the lurking melancholy of decadence. They look like they have been painted, delicately shaded in opulent images, a visual feast with colours at times vivid, other times almost filtered and misty with an emerging sense of vanitas. They are rich compositions of allegorical objects, quotations and references to consumerism. LaChapelle creates strong and triumphant scenes and, despite the social criticism and the perverse nature of some details, such as the strange vagina resembling a mouth in The Lovers Flower, they of- 8QDVHQVXDOLWjFKHDWWRUQRDOOD¿JXUDIHPPLQLOHDL¿RULHDXQ invasivo senso dell’eros non poteva non chiamare in causa l’opera di Nobuyoshi Araki, sorta anch’essa dalla stretta relazione fra arte e vita, se consideriamo che la prima ad attrarre il suo obiettivo fu la moglie durante il loro viaggio di nozze. We cannot think of this kind of sensuality, based on the female figure, flowers and a pervasive sense of Eros without considering the work of Nobuyoshi Araki. His work is also the result of a close relationship between life and art, since he first began to use photography to portray his wife during their honeymoon. After this he started depicting the women in the red light districts and all those who offered their body to art. Nude or with traditional flowery kimonos, tied with ropes according to the erotic art of bondage, Araki’s women are suspended between tradition and modernity. These are images where the passion for life and for all that is transformed over time- like his sensual, powerful flowers- create an emotional tension between good and evil, irony and mystery, erotic longing and playful expression, purity and malice. Sensi nudi has chosen to bring together works from different eras, placing Tina Modotti’s and Edward Weston’s photographs next to those by LaChapelle and Araki. Within this time frame, other significant contemporary artists have also contributed with their work, less focussed on eroticism, but offering a significant contribution to the dialogue of the exhibition. This dialogue, with such diverse works hanging next to one another, might at first seem a hazardous choice, with the monumental works by LaChapelle hanging next to Tina’s nudes by Edward Weston, Tokyomania by Araki and Barbara by Rosangela Betti. It is however precisely this contrast between the different sizes of the photographs, and the passage from black and white nudes to the majestic colour flower compositions that animates and give a hyperbolic rhythm to similarities and differences. We can see the horizontal softness or the bodies, their linear gesture of their form, the languid turgidity of the petals or the dryness of the stems, the compositional jubilation of The Earth Laughs in Flowers and the minimalist composition of the nudes. The nudes of Weston and Araki lie on textured grounds, those of Betti are set in a natural environment using rocks and the sea as a background. Other nudes by Betti, softly reclining, caressed by water and poetically pervaded by handwriting are hung between two works by Araki: Untitled, in which colourful orchids come out of a blue vase whose shape recalls a 29 30 GRWWLHOHGRQQHOHJDWHGL$UDNLWUDLTXDOLFRPSDLRQRL¿RULGL Robert Gligorov: Tutti Frutti n°2, dove la successione dei petali della rosa rossa si tramuta nell’incarnato del sesso femminile, e Tutti Frutti n°3FKHWUDVSRQHLOURVVRLQWHUQRGHO¿RUHELDQFRLQ goccia di sangue. Atmosfere pulviscolari, che dichiarano la struttura a pixel del- phallic erotic gesture, and Flower Rondeau, where the close up of a single flower captures the beauty of changing sensuality in a single moment. Another wall, another dialogue, this time between Tina Modotti’s flowers and Araki’s tied women. In between these we can see Robert Gligorov’s flowers from Tutti Frutti n°2, where a succession of petals in a red rose is transformed into the flesh of female genitalia and Tutti Frutti n°3, where the inner redness of a flower is transformed into a drop of blood. The dialogue between these works is at once strong and full of deep lyricism. There is a subtle relationship between the roundness of the bodies accentuated by the grip of the ropes in Araki’s nudes and the delicate and ephemeral foliage of the petals. There is the contrast of Tina Modotti’s black and white and Araki and Gligorov’s dominant colour red, symbolically suspended between blood and passion. Arguably one of Tina’s most sensual and poetic portraits by Weston, The white iris of 1921, is in dialogue with two striking works by Renato Grome. The principle of seduction is considered in two ways by the extreme close up of the flower in Grome’s work: towards the other in Seduce: Alien, and towards fulfilment in Seduce: Calm, exploring the depth of emotion and the senses intrinsic to the power of the gaze. The exhibition then continues the homage to Tina Modotti and the cultural environment where she is said to have met Weston. In the artistic and literary gatherings she hosted at the Los Angles studio together with her then husband, the painter and caricaturist Roubaix de L’Abrie Rickey (known as Robo). There was a great interest for all that was new, and the East in particular was favoured for its sensual elements. As well as Araki, two more fascinating eastern artists have been included in the show: Izima Kaoru and Hiroyuki Masuyama. Masuyama’s video Bloom, poetically documents the life of a flower. He has recorded the blooming of 24 flowers using a painstaking process of photography. He shot a photograph every 6 hours for four weeks, taking a total 2,600 photographs. Karou’s large photographs are hung in relationship to two portraits by Betti. Betti’s works, entitled Isabella Santacroce, seem suspended between life and death, reality and fiction, with closed eye lids or with eyes open but only showing the whites. Karou’s works are from his project Landscapes with a corpse, and are poetically disturbing, cruel and seductive. They are interpreted by actresses and models wearing designer clothes – in this case Vivienne Westwood- and encouraged to stage their fantasies of the perfect death. They shift the scene of a murder or natural death into elegant and strongly aesthetic ceremonies. The grainy atmospheres in the works of Beatrice Valentine Amrhein, from the installation VIDEOS lustre, reveal the pixel structure of technological images. In these works the artist draws the attention to her body in all its parts, to emphasize the inseparable connection between man and technology. A mouth, a groin and a hand softly leaning on a light dress to caress the thigh all emerge from white and misty images. Brightened by the red of the lips and the nail polish, they talk of a subtle and yearned for Eros. In Carlo Vidoni’s new photographs, Eros becomes an apparition refracted through daily objects, confirming once again his poetics of small things. A female nude is portrayed standing, reflected in the deforming convexity of a spoon, almost as if it had been snatched during an erotic banquet. Another nude is framed in a glass of water, perfectly contained within the liquid. A third dives headfirst into the spherical glass top of a bottle speaking about new emotional paths of sensuality captured within the walls of the home. Antonio Girbés’ work is also related to this poetics of small things. His flowers have a knowing painterly influence. The delicate frailness of the petals, which also hint at a reflection on the fleetingness of existence, and the nervous tangling of stems in a kind of fatal torsion, pours into a harrowing eroticism of things. With the sculptural installation by Gaetano Bodanza and the photographic wall installation by Franco Fontana the exhibition Sensi nudi reveals the sensuality of the male body. The strength of muscular prowess according to the canons of classical aesthetics substitutes the poetic softness of the female body. The principle of possession replaces the perdition of the senses and sensual and emotional surrender The new male sculpture by Bodanza, the first he has made which is not skin coloured, casts its reflection in the mirror which takes the place of a female bust. This mirror embraces his semblance, translating the eroticism of the exchange of glances into an installational experience. A fior di pelle (skin deep) The new project by Bigas Luna was created especially for Maravee Eros. It weaves together photography, painting, video and installation and puts the transversal linguistic skills of the great Catalan artist at centre stage. The images which are the subject of the video installation and the artist’s book (created and exhibited thanks to the collaboration and support of Graphistudio) were obtained through a painting technique applied to photographic negatives of female nudes taken by Bigas Luna in the sixties. He works on the subtle triggers of seduction, lying between revealing and concealing, in a shifting balance wherein desire is fuelled. Female nakedness appears to be painted and in part hidden by marks and stains which simulate the emotional pace of the gaze passing over the body. Longing for all that is feminine is staged through soft, rosy flesh held in the curvaceous voluptuousness of the forms which are only partly covered with garments. This longing draws from the source of life, driven by a thirst for knowledge teeming with fluids, they are just as dense and meaningful in their physical nature as they are veiled and caressing in their broad symbolic aspect. The protagonists in these works are already eroticised through their skimpy clothing of stockings, muffs, high heel shoes, hats, chains, necklaces and bracelets of glittering stones. Furthermore, their nakedness is set against a domestic backdrop that, in declaring their everyday reality, makes the very principle of the nude hyperbolic. It is a clear homage to the work of Miroslav Tichy and to his women, admired for their skinny ankles, round, or excessive bottoms, their cellulite or laddered tights. Bigas Luna pays homage to their surprising everyday nature. It is captured in blurred images, dusty like a memory, scratched and stained like reality. He does this through a measured painting technique on photographs, performed with the sensuality of one brushing the skin with fingers dipped in warm chocolate. Indeed, in the imagery of the Catalan artist, Eros and food fuel each other. During the inaugural evening of the event, along side the womb-like darkness of the projection room, this relational aspect was also brought to the stage, with an erotic tasting created by the Maitre Chocolatier Stefano Collaut. The two scenographic installations created and produced by Belinda De Vito for the buffet organised at Maravee Eros have become a show within the show, a true installation revealing De Vito’s poetics and traversal linguistic skills. She is able to create objects and design sets, finding solutions for all the complex questions of materials, scenography and photography. One room as red as passion, the other as green as the garden of Eden, created with different materials and a great attention to design, nature and the perception of the senses: sight, touch and taste. All this paid homage to Tina Modotti even during the convivial event of the inauguration: a cascade of flowers, textiles, the Bell lampshades by Gervasoni. This was accompanied by Log designed by Paola Navone: this is a real log without the bark, made up of sections of various types of wood and set on a base of real grass. Furthermore, these spaces included edible decorations during the inauguration: a frame with roses of ham and Morgante salami made by students at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, in collaboration with Alessandra De Rosa from Portonat in San Daniele and cupcakes, rice sweets and fruit skewers made by Theodora Hurustiati, all in keeping with the dominant red of the room. As part of the scenography coordinated by Belinda De Vito there were five mannequins dressed in emblematic paper clothing in the entrance hall of the castle. These were made in black and white, in honour of Tina Modotti’s photography. Her face appears in miniature images which make up a curious skirt, expressing the taste for didactical research mixing historical knowledge, craft skills and stylistic innovation. The clothing was made by students in the 5th year of the fashion and costume course at the Liceo Artistico Statale Giovanni Sello di Udine – Martina Bertolini, Beatrice Bulian, Chiara Conti, Silvia D’Agostino, Debora Lugnan, Elisa Moreale, Caterina Rizzi, Lisa Santarossa, Kristel Serio, Chiara Tonetto, Elena Tonino, Michela Verona - guided by their teachers, Nadia Cecotti, Tiziana Infanti and Maddalena Mesaglio, and with the coordination of Francesca Agostinelli. Suitably adapted to the façade of the historic building, it became one of the protagonists of the opening evening, animating the walls with images of bodies and flowers which symbolically suggest the poetic essence of the exhibition Sensi nudi. Tinissima enamorada, is a theatrical performance by and with Luisa Vermiglio, with music by Roberto Daris and the collaboration of Rossetti – Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia. It displays a painstaking and extremely lyrical work which has been developed from the piece Accanto a Tina / Cerca de Tina, made in 2000 for Rossetti and based on a passionate and extensive study of Tina Modotti’s life and work. The actress’ monologue starts from a game of almost casual identification and explores the evocations of what is left of Tina Modotti’s life: documents, letters, descriptions and unforgettable images, gradually making them her own. Vermiglio writes in the production notes “there are people who have left only a few traces of their existence, and yet they assume a mysterious depth: they become carved in our hearts and inexplicably bridge our absences… what happens within us when, as we follow these traces, we seem to hear a voice, nearby?... The first instinct scolpiscono nel cuore, colmano inspiegabilmente le nostre assenze… Una performance che, come scrive l’artista, “ predilige l’ascolto piuttosto che l’impatto artistico, lo sguardo piuttosto che l’analisi”. is to sieze that voice, to keep it safe, secret, inside us… and the secret sustains us, it moves us, it keeps us alive. But when the traces and the voice we believe we are hearing are those of Tina Modotti, nothing could be more contradictorily intimate and at the same time collective: mine, profoundly mine, and yet belonging to everyone. How can we be alone with this secret? How can resist the need to share it and tell others?”. These are the thoughts and intentions behind the creation of this show, made up of words, gestures and music and performed in between the projected images of the face, life and work of Tina. It is a show which does not pause for breath, performed with precision, respect and passion. It is moving and never rhetorical and evokes the fascinating biography of a woman and an artist in love with life and art. Cercando Tina was produced in 2011 for the Festival Corpi Urbani in Genoa as a site-specific performance based on the place where it was originally hosted, the Maddalena district in Genoa. It was written and performed by Marta Bevilacqua of the Arearea theatre company, with score by Vito Vella, scenery design by Ilaria Bomben and technical supervision by Fausto Bonvini. This contemporary dance piece, continuously fuelled by Tina Modotti’s photography is a further homage to her life and work and was performed alongside the exhibitions and performances of the inauguration of Maravee Eros. Born at a crossroads of lives and cultures where Bevilacqua had a deeply human experience, Cercando Tina enriches the artwork with a profound social background: it is a testimony which centres around immigrants and dreamers on the theme of voyages and the discovery of the new. Voyages and migration based on the principle of mutation, which encouraged Bevilacqua to modify some of the scenic elements as well as the itinerary of the performance for the spaces of the castle during Maravee Eros. This is a performance which, in the words of the artist, “favours listening to artistic impact, the gaze to analysis”. 97 WE LOVE TINA! Bringing together the large photographs of Gian Paolo Tomasi with the stills from the movie The Tiger’s Coat from the archives of Cinemazero,, this exhibition is based on the concept of “staging”, combining cinema, theatre and visual arts, and in particular a kind of photographic expression obtained by creating scenography and costumes, both real and virtual. Playing with the relationship between fact and fiction, represented by the cinematography from the time of silent movies and the display of a contemporary photographic work, this exhibition outlines curious parallels in the multiplicity of identity. From the dual identity of the Character played by Tina Modotti in the plot of the film we come to the multiple identities staged by Tomasi ranging from stars to saints, myths and daily life inspired by ancient paintings and contemporary culture. Minimal but piercing shifts, between truth and fiction, real and virtual, mixing the antique and the most contemporary, all these elements make Tomasi’s work a powerful expression of collective memory made contemporary. Women, partly real and partly virtual are strong and sensual figures, lying between “here”, as contemporary icons, and “elsewhere”, ricocheting from references to ancient paintings to the concept of alias. This is a concept where internet hyperbolically and collectively dilates the principle of identity multiplication as expressed by Pessoa. The juxtaposition of these art works with the images of Tina Modotti in the only surviving movie from her brief cinematic career, causes a further shift of signs, images and content in the exhibition. This in turn invites us to reflect on the intriguing aspect of identity, relating to the principle of shifting, dressing up and role playing which will be further investigated in the 2014 edition, titled Maravee Corpus. 105 The Tiger’s Coat (Pelle di tigre, 1920) Produzione: Dial Film Company; distribuzione: W.W.Hodkinson Corporation, attraverso la Pathé Exchange; regia: Roy Clements; sceneggiatura: Jack Cunnigham, dal romanzo di Elizabeth Dejeans The Tiger’s Coat ,QGLDQDSROLVIRWRJUD¿D R.E. The Tiger’s Coat (1920) Production: Dial Film Company; distribution: W.W.Hodkinson Corporation, via Pathé Exchange. Director: Roy Clements; Scenario: Jack Cunnigham, from the novel by Elizabeth Dejeans The Tiger’s Coat (Indianapolis, 1917); photography: R.E. Irish; art direction: E.P.Hunziker. with: W. Lawson Butt (Alexander MacAllister), Tina Modotti (Jean Ogilvie/Maria De La Guarda), Myrtle Stedman (la signora Mendall), Myles McCarthy (Andrew Hyde), Frank Weed (Frederick Bagsby), Jiquel Lance (Carl Mendall). Finished filming Robert Brunton Studios in Hollywood in June 1920. Released November 1920. When Tina Modotti left Udine to go to San Francisco in 1913, she was only 17 years old, and had a natural talent for acting, that would introduce her to the world of cinema in Los Angeles at the end of the 1910’s. Her Hollywood career lasted between 1920 and 1922 and left us three films: The Tiger’s Coat (1920), a melodrama by Roy Clements; Riding with Death (1921), a western by Jacques Jaccard with Buck Jones produced by Fox and I Can Explain (1922), a comedy by George D. Baker. Tina’s charisma was immediately clear, as can be gathered by a review from the release of The Tiger’s Coat: “ the movie is pervaded by an extremely pleasant exotic atmosphere, and is dominated by the presence of Tina Modotti, a very talented Italian artist.” Neither a negative nor a 35mm positive exist of her only surviving film The Tiger’s Coat, there is only a reduced format copy preserved at the Library of Congress in Washington. CIneteca del Friuli has made a 16 mm copy of this which has been used to show the film to a larger audience during the events about Tina Modotti at Cinemazero. Plot The events of The Tiger’s Coat take place in an affluent town in southern California. A rich bachelor, Alexander Mac Allister (W. Lawson Butt), falls in love with Jean Ogilvie (Tina Modotti), who has become his ward after the death of her father. He believes her to be the daughter of an old Scottish friend, but the girl, whose real name is Maria De La Guarda, is actally the Mexican maid of the real Jean Ogilvie, who had died of yellow fever. A business rival tells Mac Allister about the real origins of the girl, and although she had always intended to tell him the truth, he sends her away. Jean/ Maria leaves town, but returns as a dancer. In the meantime MacAllister has realised that his racist ideas should not come in the way of love, and he tries to meet her after the show, but without success. However Jean changes her mind and that very night comes back to him in the middle of a terrible storm, just like the night they first met. The performance Bagaglio is by the author and actress Lorenza Franzoni - co-produced with the Comune di Reggio Emilia as part of Festival 167 Contatto, with the participation in Udine of Paolo Jacob, who took the photographs. It is based on the direct participation of the public and is a homage to Tina’s life and journey, starting with her emigration from Friuli to America. Bagaglio is a social game that begins in a public place. Bags and backpacks are emptied, to be worn on the head like a crest, and their contents- with their connotations of affections, comfort and style- are used to construct unexpected images. Thus the bag, our cultural baggage, becomes a means for inventing a new global code, a way to travel through our outlook and become someone else, promoting inexistent tribal cultures which are nonetheless familiar, because they are born from the staging of things we recognise. It has been brought about thanks to the collaboration between Maravee and the Obalne Galerjie of Piran and Koper, which started in 2009. Throughout Maravee Eros many contemporary artists have related to Tina Modotti and paid homage to her works through photographs, videos, sculptures and performances. In this instance, contemporary art makes space for the historical figure of Modotti. Many photographs have been exhibited at the castle of Susans and at the Visionario from the archives of Cinemazero (one of the richest and most complete collections of Tina Modotti’s work in the world). Other images have been juxtaposed with the significant collection of works which show Tina as an actress and model- both as a model for Edward Weston and in the images from the films The Tiger’s Coat- and in her still lives which show her poetics as a photographer. With the aim of re-reading the essence of the human and artistic identity of Tina Modotti, the homage of contemporary art is gathered in one single work for the closing event of Maravee Eros. As part of this historic event the piece We Love Tina! is presented for the third time in the program of the festival, each time in a different way. We Love Tina! by Elisa Seravalli was first presented as video mapping and shown in the cloister of the Biblioteca Civica in Pordenone, with music from the concert of The Leaping Fish Trio. It was then adapted to the outdoor environment of the castle of Susans and now is presented as a video, made by Tommaso Lessio (multimedia lab at Cinemazero) and Michele Baggio (Sowhat Studio). This video documents the audio visual show held during the preview of Maravee. It displays a number of Modotti’s images from the exhibition Tina fra cinema e fotografia, elaborated by Seravalli in a contemporay key. It is a voyage through images and sound, black and white and colour, bodies, faces and flowers which weaves a sensual thread between different eras. 123 124 125 126 Artisti / artists Beatrice Valentine Amrhein Nata nel 1968 a Wassy (Francia), vive e lavora a Parigi e New York.
