“Good afternoon! I’m so happy to be here with you. Hello Mr Fox! Happy to meet you! I bambini e le bambine vengono dolcemente - ma And now, please, let me introduce myself: my decisamente - coinvolti in attività interattive che si name is…. The English teacher goes on asking, introducing, greeting, smiling and shaking hands – ‘till all the children have said their names and greeted the new teacher! B. LET’S TALK ABOUT FEELINGS! Scenario and materials: classroom without desks; ‘Mr Fox’ (puppet); 3 big flash cards (with images and words related to feelings) for the teachers; small flash cards (with same images and words related to feelings) to be handed out to children; children sitting in a circle, facing each others; two teachers (Italian and English) standing in the same circle with children (next to each other); children have got their name cards on their chests; children already know the names of basic feelings and recognize (form the images they see) what they’re going to talk about! 1. The English teacher shows the big flash cards with images and names of feelings (happy/sad/angry). “Look: we’re going to talk about feelings! Today I feel HAPPY (shows card): I’m HAPPY to be here with you! What about Mr Fox? He’s HAPPY too! I’m not SAD (shows flash card and deny); I’m not ANGRY (shows flash card and deny). Is Mr Fox SAD? Is Mr Fox ANGRY?” (Waits for children’s answer – the Italian teacher can help.) 2. The English teacher starts asking his/her colleague: “How do YOU feel, today, dear …..?” The Italian teacher answers, showing the right flash card “I’m happy/sad /angry!” and then 3. the English teacher goes on asking the same question to the other children in turn till all the children have said and shown their feelings – they answer and show their flash cards. C. GOODBYE song (“happy birthday”) UNA COSAPEVOLEZZA NUOVA PER TUTTI: PAROLE NUOVE PER DIRE DI NOI… LESSON 2 LET’S TALK ABOUT FEELINGS AND SING A SONG! Scenario and materials: classroom - without desks; big poster with children’s portraits and small pockets with feelings flashcards in, one for each child, showing his/her EMOTION OF THE DAY. Children standing in a circle in front of the “feelings poster”; two teachers (Italian and English t.) standing near the poster; children have got their name cards on their chests. A. ET: “How do you feel today? I see …. is happy! Are you happy…?” All the children are interviewed and they answer in turn. B. Song: IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW … Children stand in a circle, listen and sing the song with the teachers; they hold hands and move according to the music and the words. LESSON 4 LET’S PLAY WITH FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS: “SHOW AND GUESS” game! Scenario: Children stand in a circle. One child stands outside and moves around. A. The teachers give one “emotions flashcard” to each child. Children look at it but keep the card hidden. Children try and show the emotion they have in their card, without showing the card to the child who is standing out of the circle and moves around. The outer child tries and guesses: s/he says the name of the emotion s/he guesses from the face of his/her friend. If s/he doesn’t guess, s/he goes on till the end of the circle. If s/he guesses, s/he runs after the child and tries and catches him/her in order to take his/her place in the circle. This game goes on till every child has tried and guessed. Highly motivating scenario: playful activity with lot of movement involved. The children recognize and pronounce words related to feelings; they ask the basic questions: “… are you….?” and respond in a coherent way: “Yes, I am/No, I’m not”. All the children express and recognize feelings through non-verbal language: they show and recognize facial expressions - first steps towards an ever growing self-awareness and an even more important awareness of some other people’s emotional status. C. GOODBYE song (“happy birthday” tune) LESSON 3 LET’S PLAY WITH FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS: “GHOST, ARE YOU HAPPY ?” Scenario: In the gym or in the garden; children standing all around and a child or two children are “the ghost/s”. The ghost/s lay/s down on the floor – covered with a (possibly) white sheet. The teacher tells him/her a “secret” in is/her ear: “you’re happy (or sad or angry), ghost!” Children in turn go near the ghost and ask: “Ghost are you…?” When the ghost hears the name of the feeling he is feeling at the moment, s/he stands up and runs till he catches a child. This child is the one who takes his/her place as the ghost and the game goes on till all the children have played the role of the ghost. Highly motivating scenario: it arises and sustains motivation through games and movement. Language practice: all the children recognize, recall, pronounce words related to feelings. The children also ask the basic question: “… are you…?” and respond in a coherent way. The natural, spontaneous acquisition of a foreign language is enhanced trough repetition – and the playful manner of the whole situation. C.
