The year 2011 saw an accumulation of sources of risk: the Japanese disaster which exacerbated the global slowdown, failure to deal with excessive government debt in Europe, rising energy costs and political deadlock in the United States. Banca Centrale Europea (BCE), che ha nuovamente alzato i propri tassi di riferimento in luglio, ha aggravato Denial of these realities by the European Central Bank (ECB), which again raised its key interest rates in July, precipitated the situation in Europe, culminating in novembre che tutti i rating delle economie europee erano a rischio e difficilmente sanabili dalle misure adottate dai singoli stati. 560 banche hanno ottenuto EUR 489 miliardi, riducendo of all Euro zone countries were threatened and could not be rectified simply with national remedies. After Euro zone economies started the year with a solid first-quarter growth of +0.8%, even Germany seemed starting to contract again in the second half of the year, with manufacturing orders down 4.3% in September (in particular orders from the Euro zone were falling 12%). In the meantime the Euro zone sovereign debt crisis spread to a core country, Italy, and pushed forward the credit risk in some emerging markets, with fears growing that contraction in Europe could cause the crisis to spread even to emerging markets because of European banks very strong presence in international financing. Despite the fact that growth in most emerging countries is financed by local banks and that the majority of them have current account surpluses generating currency reserves and not borrowing requirements, markets feared a ruinous burst in asset prices. The environment of extreme uncertainty in Europe lasted u European banks were offered unlimited funding for three years and effectively addressed fears of collateral ritrovare la propensione più positivi del primo trimestre, apprezzando gli elementi di crescita e il benefico ra Immediately, 560 banks grabbed EUR 489 billion in funding. The intervention shifted somewhat the focus away from Europe and the more positive stance of the first quarter, when growth seemed well under way and inflationary pressures in emerging countries declining, reemerged. In fact, among major economies, the US economy has shown a good resilience during all of 2011, with household consumption surprising positively since summer despite a contraction in the public sector, and corporate profit margins higher than at any point in the last 65 years (but business investment at a 30-years low). 5 Anche nei BRIC la crescita è rimasta solida, nonostante nel nuovo piano quinquennale il premier cinese Wen abbia previsto una crescita più modesta che in passato, il dato deludente del Brasile (+2.7% nel 2011, ma con un con una corrispondente almeno al 4% negli US, e con la Russia mediamente attorno a +4%, i BRIC non avranno difficoltà a superare gli Stati Uniti entro il 2015. In China, Premier Wen forecasted in the new 5-year plan softer growth and BRIC were already slowing during 2011, with a disappointing +2.7% GDP for Brazil (mostly -7% new growth trend. Nevertheless, China growing near to 8% is akin for the world to the US growing 4% and adding the four BRIC together, with Russia at around 4%, their collective size will be larger than the US by 2015, and as they get bigger, of course their positive contribution to global GDP will rise. At the end of the year, while monetary policy has started to turn in most emerging countries, other risks intensified, such as the possibility of an external shock on oil prices caused by aggravated geopolitical tension surrounding the present a real threat to consumption recovery in developed nations and monetary relaxation in developing ones. All things considered, three years after the beginning of the global deleveraging in September 2008, with the fall of Lehman, the global economy continues to feel the lingering effects of 2008. 2011 was a year of disappointment and new dangers, for those hoping to see progress on reducing the debt overhang. Deleveraging, the process of reducing debt/income ratios, has just begun and is here to stay. The process is in early stages in most nelle dieci economie maggiori, il debito ha continuato a salire e solo gli Stati Uniti (insieme alla Corea del Sud e rapporto tra il debito totale della loro economia e PIL. debt has grown from the onset of the crisis, because of rising government debt. The US is one of only three countries (the others are South Korea and Australia) where the total debt to GDP has declined. Nonostante i frequenti Ideally, deleveraging should be characterized by two stages: first households, corporations and financial institutions reduce debt, while economic growth is negative or very low and government accumulates debt; while in a second phase growth starts being self-sustaining and government debt is reduced gradually. In the US, because of a quick policy response from the Central Bank guaranteeing debt and printing money, the contractionary period only lasted six months (versus over three years in the 1930s). Since then the early stages of the reflationary phase have begun and the US seem to manage well the difficult mix between rising nominal incomes, default and debt repayment. Despite a frequent comparison with Japan in the 1990s, after a first painful phase where debt rose from 340% to 370% of GDP and stocks lost half their value, the US has entered reflation quite quickly. The contraction in global credit and USD liquidity created a squeeze for cash and the USD strengthened almost 15% on a trade-weighted basis. But after that, debt burdens fell to 335%, credit markets healed and stocks recovered. The magnitude of policy support by the Fed has been enormous. With QE2 in August 2010 the Fed increased its holdings of longer duration government debt and the fall of 2011 saw the beginning of Operation Twist, with holdings of securities peaking at 5% of GDP. fase il debito totale americano è passato dal 340% al 370% del PIL, con conseguente dimezzamento della capitalizzazione borsistica e penuria di USD (rafforzatosi del 15%), oggi la ripresa è tangibile e il debito totale è attorno al 335% del PIL. Conversely, Europe has gone through the first and painful phase of the deleveraging phase but has not yet moved on. This has especially to do with the fact that any single European country cannot monetize and must rely on the ECB. If we look at Spain, like in the US incomes began to fall from September 2008 with debt levels initially rising (from 365% to roughly 400%), but as we write income has not recovered, debt burdens have stabilized but are still higher than in 2008. Equities fell initially 45%, then recovered but are still at their lows. In the fall of 2011, the ECB put money into Spanish assets at a rate of more than 10% of GDP to prevent from a more severe deleveraging. The intervention came from a mix of sovereign and covered bond purchases and short term loans such as the LTRO. But despite these efforts, the monetization has not pushed interest rates down enough to start a virtuous circle and push nominal growth above nominal rates. The result of the weak policy response in Europe is that real growth is still negative and the EUR has devalued 20% against gold on an annualized basis. Such global deleveraging dynamics characterized capital markets during 2011. With the US being in a more advanced phase of reflation, US stocks held up relatively well in international comparison. The S&P 500 changed only -3 basis point (+2% with dividends), the smallest year-over-year change since 1947, the Dow was positive and the more cyclical stocks, technology and small caps, lost only between -2% and -5%. The Dow Jones Industrial is a lucky benchmark among only five in the world that advanced in 2011 (the others being Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Venezuela all economies subject to inflationary pressures). Of the other major markets, the DAX was down -14.7%, the CAC 40 -17%, the Nikkei 225 -17.3% and Brazil, China and Hong Kong between 18% and -22%. perso solo -0.03% (+2% includendo i dividendi), la variazione minore dal 1947. In Switzerland, the SMI managed a -5.8%. The real turning point of 2011 came in August with a rapid deterioration in confidence and the Euro zone debt crisis taking a dramatic twist. Contagion spread and volatility environment, Swiss assets enjoyed a rather privileged status. The second half of 2011 was particularly frustrating for stocks with consistently improving corporate earnings and forecasts but untradeable volatility but also for most fixed income investors. Paradoxically, fears of a sovereign default brought investors fleeing from equities in the perceived safe haven of core Euro zone bonds, UK Gilts and US Treasuries. In the first part of the year bond yields were rising globally, eroding capital and producing negative returns. The surge to safe haven investments, in some cases rather undisturbed by the negative real yields offered, was assumed by many to be short-tem in nature (most notably by fixed income legend Bill Gross of PIMCO, manager of the largest bond fund in the world) but persisted throughout the year resulting in the sovereign debt market unexpectedly being the strongest performing asset during the year. The end of the year was then dominated by the rescue and bailout talks throughout Europe and culminated in the liquidità ai mercati. Risky assets regained but as we have seen remained well below their starting levels or only slightly nel caso delle obbligazioni ad alto rendimento o quelle dei Paesi Emergenti. bonds. Le opportunità di trading nelle materie prime si sono quindi rivelate limi Dollaro, molte di esse hanno perso buona parte dei guadagni in un contesto generale di profit taking. oz but with drawdowns of up to -16% in a few weeks and Brent Crude Oil hitting USD 128 but highly volatile, while Middle Eastern tensions culminated in the so called Arab Spring, the commodity markets remained fractured and with very limited long-term trading opportunities. Finally, gold and oil lost much of their gains as the USD strengthened, profit taking abounded and a temporary calm came to oil-producing regions. descritte finora, è naturale che neanche i fondi hedge siano riusciti a generare performance importanti. 8 The year was difficult also for hedge funds with broad fund composite indices posting their third calendar year decline since 1990. Nevertheless, many specific hedge general hedge funds were the best performing asset class immediately after US stocks and bonds. Estimates also show that the hedge fund industry regained the USD 2 trillion milestone at the end of 2011 while for the full year investors allocated USD 70 billion of net new capital to pared with European UCITS, which rose by a total of 12.7% in 2010 but lost 9% of assets in 2011, the hedge funds evolved very positively. Notwithstanding the solid overall figure, almost 60% of all hedge funds experienced outflows and the year was particularly difficult for fund of hedge funds which lost over USD 7 billion only in the last quarter of 2011, which was dominated by a consistent reduction of directional equity market beta and positioning to benefit from continuing macroeconomic volatility. E almeno in Gran Bretagna e Italia il crollo è attualmente più lungo e profondo di quant At the turn of the year, major macroeconomic indicators point to a continuation of the upturn in the United States, but the projection of the improvements over the medium term remains cautious because of the need to reduce government and household indebtedness over the long term. In Europe the outlook is poor: banks are still overcautious (with the amount of precautionary reserves at the ECB increased by 50% over the year) and cumulative budgetary restrictions are weighing on consumption, while the IMF and the European Commission continue to apply radical austerity to countries like Italy, Spain, Ireland or Greece. It is too often forgotten that before the crisis the debt of southern European countries was declining and did not average more than 75% of GDP. Italy had a large primary budget surplus and Spain and Ireland enjoyed budgetary surpluses. Unfortunately, the sacrifices imposed, such as the 22% cut in the minimum wage in Greece (to give a hint of the decoupling: at the same time minimum wages were increased by 14% in Brazil), appear more a socially unbearable drain on the economy rather than a structural adjustment to increase competitiveness, labor flexibility and growth so urgently needed. In fact, industrial production in Euro area declined 18% and has only recovered 91% so far: not much better than the Great Depression, where the decline was -28% and the the Great Depression of 1930-1934 is not that surprising since Europe is replicating both the difficulties with the gold standard and the false focus on austerity. In Britain and Italy (at least) the slump is now longer and deeper than in the 1930s. But to conclude on a positive note, we would like to mention that among the desirable news, global poverty appears to be declining rather sharply. In 2011, the World Bank updated their 2005 study on global poverty with 2010 data: the percentage of the world population living with incomes of USD 1.25 per day or less is one-half of its 1990 level. This suggests that the Millennium Development Goal of halving world poverty was achieved five years early. A huge part is this success comes from China, but progress has been made in both Africa and Latin America. Therefore, contrary to many post-financial crisis criticisms, globalization appears to be contributing to desirable things. We now would like to turn our attention to developments in Switzerland. Amid major economies Switzerland is doing relatively well. The unemployment rate peaked at the end of 2009 at around 4.2% and is now at 3%. Capacity utilization is stabilizing: in manufacturing it fell from 89% before the crisis to 76% and is back to 83.2% while in construction it kept increasing to over 76%. mentre per esempio nel settore edile non è mai calata. 10 Estimates of the output gap in Switzerland range from 0.4% to -1.1%, while in the US it is still at 5.5%. As a whole for 2011, an economic growth rate of 1.9% was achieved in Switzerland, especially thanks to the favourable momentum in the first half of the year. The Swiss economy slowed in the fourth quarter and annualized GDP increased by only 0.4%. In August 2011, the Swiss franc rose most since at least 1971 on demand for a refuge: on August 9 the CHF climbed to 1.03257 versus the EUR after touching 1.00749, the strongest value since the EUR began trading in 1999. On a purchasing-power-parity basis, this made the CHF overvalued by over 27% against the EUR and 41% against the USD. The Swiss National Bank unexpectedly cut interest rates to zero to cap the soaring Swiss franc (three-month Libor target range at 0-0.25%) and finally introduced a minimum exchange rate of 1.20 against the EUR on September 6. Despite these efforts, the continued strength of the franc hurt many sectors exposed to exchange rates such as manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing or tourism. In such sectors, final demand rose substantially but a negative contribution from inventories led to very modest growth at the end of 2011. Inflation in Switzerland was influenced by the sharp appreciation of the CHF and has fallen from 0.6% at the beginning of the year to -0.7%, nevertheless the Swiss National Banks estimates that the downward trend, started in June 2011, has now come to a halt and that the negative annual inflation rate is mainly due to the change in prices of foreign goods (-3.4%, despite increasing oil prices). From now on, the Swiss economy should pick up again and a moderate economic growth of close to 1% is expected for 2012. Also the latest survey results suggest that the situation is stabilizing. The high value of the CHF is still a burden but strong domestic demand, sustained by high levels of immigration, and other factors such as low interest rates are having a favorable impact. Nevertheless, as long as no sustainable solution for the European sovereign debt crisis is implemented, the outlook will remain uncertain also for our resilient domestic economy. Turning now to the banking sector, any deleveraging phase has critical consequences for financial systems and 2011 was another very challenging year for our industry. Also in Switzerland, banking activity was subdued, especially in the second half of the year, with investors still seeking safe have investments. Increasing regulatory constraints and liquidity requirements are putting huge pressure on structures and business models. In ottobre, il Parlamento ha approvato misure p The Swiss Federal Council and the FINMA reacted to the global financial crisis with what probably amounts to the most radical change of banking rules among developed nations. Another key topic for Swiss regulators and banks during 2011 was to further improve the protection of investors through a partial the revision of the Collective Investment Scheme Act of 2007 (CISA). In March 2011 the Swiss Federal Council kicked off the process of partial revision of the CISA, aimed at bringing it in line with the new international standards (AIMF Directive) in terms of management, custody and distribution of funds and to provide access to the European market. Further goals are to enhance investor protection and to prevent foreign market participants who want to avoid international regulations to settle in Switzerland. The proposal makes the supervision of all asset managers of collective investment schemes mandatory, increases the potential liabilities of a custodian bank, sets minimum requirements for the distribution of foreign funds etc. In the meantime, in July 2011 an amendment to the Collective Investment Scheme Ordinance came into force permitting a Key Investor Information Document (KIID) to be used for foreign UCITS, a welcomed decision enabling fair comparisons between products and easier investment decisions. finanziaria sostengono gli obiettivi di queste evoluzioni normative, ma hanno anche invitato alla prudenza svizzere stanno già affrontando sfide di enorme portata. banks had to deal with other great systemic issues during 2011, such as the negotiation of the settlement with US tax authorities, the agreements reached with Germany and the UK, and more in general the legal and reputational risks involved in cross-border financial services. Following the publication of a position paper in October 2010, in 2011 the FINMA began implementing the expectations set out in the paper. Specific audits, on-site checks and internal investigations were carried out. Compliance with supervisory requirements under foreign law must now be verified regularly. The FINMA also dealt with the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) which comes into force in 2013, and will have far-reaching implications also for non-US financial institutions. The banking and fund industry supports in principle the objectives of the partial revision of the CISA, but has cautioned on increasing the burden on institutions at a time when Swiss banks are already facing major challenges in private banking and investment banking. Amid this extraordinarily challenging environment, for the financial year 2011 Arner Bank reports a net result of CHF -17 million. In light of the changed market environment and group strategy, the result includes the effect of substantial impairments on participations and other provisions linked to the repositioning on our core business. Thanks to these efforts, we were able to cut the overheads by -43.5% for the parent company and by 31.8% on a consolidated basis with respect to 2010. Regarding participations, we would like to mention, most notably, that Casa4Funds posted a solid and increasing profit and that Arner Bank & Trust was able to reduce costs and to post only a slightly negative result for the year.
