change in the phrase.

Now you are going to learn a different way to say the minutes as they are grouped in fifteen-minute
increments.
Sono le dodici e un quarto. It’s quarter past twelve.
Here the minutes are un quarto meaning a quarter.
The first word un means a.
Followed by quarto, quarter.
The next phrase is È mezzogiorno e mezzo. It’s half past midday.
The minutes are expressed by the word mezzo, meaning half.
Followed by È mezzanotte e tre quarti. It’s three quarters past midnight.
The minutes are expressed by the word tre quarti meaning three quarters.
So up to now you have seen that to say how many minutes past the hour it is, you just have to say

One more way to say the time is Sono le cinque meno un quarto. It’s quarter to five.
