Cumulus is the largest international association in the field, currently including 176 universities in 44 countries, focused on applied arts, ranging from architecture to fashion, design and new media. With this issue, Ottagono and Cumulus are beginning an undertaking exploring the new generation of designers. Several examples were chosen whose diverse approaches and specializations offer a concrete model of how we design today. Christian Guellerin, Michele Capuani and Luisa Collina give introductions that emphasize one factor that young designers have in common: they speak to the world, while some signs survive that tie them back to their roots. The past and the future join to delineate the landscape of tomorrow. A simple perforation process helps add character to the texture of the surface. The faculty has 1,700 students and 150 teachers. For 2011/12, with the UNIDCOM/IADE research center, IADE will launch a PhD in Design program. ESPERIENZE: Nel 2009 è cofondatrice, direttrice design e ricercatrice di Corque Design. Attualmente è ricercatrice invitata a New York EXPERIENCE: Since 2009 she has been co-promoter, design director and resident product designer at Corque Design. She is currently a guest researcher in New York. • To what degree has the training you received at IADE influenced your career? The school was my first contact with the discipline of design, and provided me with a basic grounding in theory and pratice. The open approach of the teaching methodology there laid the foundations for my interest in developing new ideas in the academic and professional sphere. Portugal was once a nation of explorers who set off on voyages of discovery and readily adapting to those ‘unknown’ environments. Is that still a prerogative today? Actually, I think people should be- “ Flessibilità, improvvisazione e creatività sono importanti, ma più verosimilmente il successo è guidato da visione strategica, buona pianificazione e utilizzo di metodi applicativi per l’implementazione di idee creative. Flexibility, improvisation and creativity are important, but successful work is more likely to be guided by strategic vision, good planning and the right methods of application for implementing creative ideas. Those pioneering explorers had all of that. And looking at Portuguese products from an international perspective, those characteristics could help us to deal with difficult situations and achieve success today. What is your relationship to the design approach of the ‘Portuguese school’? Design is based on global concepts and individual needs; projects can be given a unique character through local skills. That would seem to describe your career, which stands out for its focus on sustainability and innovative use of traditional materials such as cork. It’s hard to explain why this resource is not used the way it once was in creative disciplines such as design. This principle has guided my professional journey and my approach to research. How does your work for MoMA in New York fit in with greater market recognition for Portuguese products? It’s the result of an applied research project that began six years ago, ‘Meanings of Matter in Design’, exploring Portuguese materials and technology with the idea that local production skills are an opportunity for innovation and success. The fact that these products are sold at MoMA is a confirmation of the approach I take in my work. © RIPRODUZIONE RISERVATA Puf Fup, Corque Design.
