This essay overviews Italian loanwords in nautical contexts. After a survey of the dynamics which led to the spread of nautical terms in Mediterranean and European languages, the author focuses on the following languages: French and Provençal; languages of the Spanish area; Hungarian and western Adriatic languages; Greek and non-Slavic Balkan languages; Slavic languages (Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian); Turkish; Arabic and modern Hebrew; English; German and Dutch. From this point of view, the Late Middle Ages (the fourteenth century in particular) and the Renaissance, which was the age of the great geographical discoveries and world ocean crossings, proved to be the most vital periods. Although the role of Italy was quite marginal at that time, the remarkable mobility of Italian crews and admirals serving in different countries permitted linguistic contacts to be constant and intense. From the middle of XIX century Corsica underwent cultural transformations that caused the island to move away from its Italian historical heritage and get closer to the cultural and linguistic French world. The trilingual context (Italian, French, Corsican) was a crucial element for the linguistic elaboration of the Corsican idiom. Taking into account some popular bilingual almanacs (ItalianCorsican) published in Bastia from 1870 to 1922, the essay analyzes the first examples of Corsican as a written language brought out in the so-called “pre-elaboration phase”. The study of purely linguistic phenomena allows the author to trace out four guidelines in contrast with one another, but all of them representative of linguistic standardization processes prior to the prescriptive ones. The essay analyzes the answers given to a questionnaire by a group of first-year students in Humanities at the University of Naples «Federico II» during the academic year 2008-2009. Its main aim is to assess the students’ grammatical competence and the metalinguistic abilities developed by them at the secondary school. The results allow the authors to reflect upon the prerequisites of a university linguistic education and are also useful to identify the abilities essential to their teaching qualification. In addition to this, the essay makes some remarks about the teaching of grammar at schools and universities and underlines the role that the knowledge of language structures should have for undergraduates in Humanities. The word in the Roman dialect ingarellasse/ingarellarsi, ‘to start a competition with’, ‘to arouse enthusiasm in finding the solution to a problem’, is generally traced back to garella ‘little competition’, that contrasts with the diminutive garetta, which is the only occurrence in the dialect. A new etymology of the term is proposed here on the basis of the occurrences of garella with the meaning of ‘quarrel’ in Libbertà Romana acquistata e defesa written by Micheli in the eighteenth century: the late Latin quere¨lla (classical Latin quere¨la), that led to quarella ‘contentious jurisdiction’ in several Italian-Romance languages (including the Roman dialect); as a result, garella is supposed to be a phonetic doublet of quarella, whose meaning changed into ‘quarrel, competition’. It follows that, owing to the obsolescence of garella, the speakers associated the parasynthetic ingarellarse (‘to compete’) with the word ‘gara’: a typical example of popular etymology. The essay takes its cue from the new meaning given to the term biscotto during the 2008 Football European Cup, when many newspapers and magazines used it to signify combine (i.e. rigging), or ‘an illegal and unsportsmanlike agreement’. The history of this word has been reconstructed by consulting the on-line archives of some newspapers, which proved that the word had been given this new meaning already in June 2004, namely when the previous European Cup had taken place. Examples of different and less known meanings of biscotto are also given. The speakers’ semantic omnipotence and linguistic creativity is also reached by using foreign words, which can be seen as sheer gifts from different linguistic communities. The current notion of “luxury loanwords”, however, is both unrealistic and flimsy. To trace and study how and when these words become widespread in the receiving language is by far more productive. This is the case of the 150 learned Americanisms (sometimes euro-Americanisms: from French and Spanish, for instance) studied in Inglese- Italiano 1 a 1 by Giovanardi, Gualdo and Coco. Sometimes antedated, they are classified from sociolinguistic (at diaphasic, diamesic, diastratic and diachronic levels), intralinguistic (at a semantic level; from a morphologival point of view, with a special attention to the grammatical genre and to their productivity for the speakers) and interlinguistic viewpoints. Their vitality is checked through a perusal of the literary pages of « Il Sole 24 Ore » in the years from 2003 to 2009.
