occasione del Carnevale. Trambelle:
ovvero qualsiasi mezzo, assai fantasioso,
dalla consistenza anche precaria, creato
appositamente per la serata e destinato a
scivolare sulla neve e ad essere giudicato
per la sua originalità. Unico requisito di
una trambella è quello di avere un
dispositivo frenante e di arrivare al
traguardo: non conta la durata della
discesa, ma l’originalità!

Nel tardo pomeriggio i coscritti della zona
(i ragazzi che raggiungono la maggiore
età) si incontrano a Epinel, villaggio di
Cogne a circa 2.5 km dal capoluogo, dove
i n c ompa g n i a dei “jou veu r s”
(fisarmonicisti) rallegrano le vie centrali
della frazione. Verso sera, il piccolo
corteo, con l’aiuto di un asino che trascina
sul carretto il barile di vino, si incammina
in direzione del capoluogo. Lungo il
percorso il gruppo fa tappa a Cretaz per
uno spuntino e successivamente, in tarda
serata, raggiunge la piazza centrale di
Cogne dove i giovani si esibiscono con
balli, canti e nella tradizionale danza del
barile. La festa prosegue con una serata
danzante.

Il Carnevale dei Piccoli
La tradizione lega la nascita del carnevale al passaggio
di Napoleone attraverso il Colle del Gran San Bernardo,
nel maggio del 1800, durante la campagna d’Italia. I
costumi sarebbero dunque la trasposizione allegorica
delle uniformi dei soldati francesi.
Ritroviamo inoltre l’orso che rappresenta l’avvicendarsi
della primavera; le code dei muli, che rappresentano i
venti e servono per allontanare le correnti d’aria
nefaste; gli specchi sui costumi, che devono scacciare
gli spiriti maligni; il colore rosso, che simboleggia la
forza e il vigore e che, anch’esso, ha il potere di
esorcizzare i malefici e le disgrazie.
Durante il corteo, le maschere visitano le famiglie;
entrano nelle case, ballano nelle strade e nelle piazze,
mangiano e bevono ciò che viene loro offerto.

Un mese prima della manifestazione, le maestre delle
scuole elementari iniziano a preparare i bambini alle
elezioni del piccolo Sindaco e del suo seguito. I bambini
della quinta classe elementare sono i potenziali
candidati alle cariche suddette.
Ognuno è libero di porre la propria candidatura e dopo
una vera e propria campagna elettorale, in cui ogni
candidato cercherà di raccogliere più voti possibili, i
bambini sono chiamati ad esprimere il loro voto.
Gli eletti vengono contattati dal Comitato del carnevale
che fornisce loro i costumi e li aiuta ad “entrare” nel
personaggio a cui sono stati destinati.
Le cariche da ricoprire sono: Sindaco - Cerimoniere - 5
Assessori - 1 Capo vigile - 10 Vigili - 1 Capo Pompiere
- 6 Pompieri - 1 Dottore - 3 Crocerossine - 2 Infermieri
- 2 Vivandiere.
Al carnevale partecipano gruppi folcloristici, bande,
majorettes e carri allegorici, il cui soggetto s’ispira al
mondo dei bambini.
La manifestazione dura una settimana e si conclude
il martedì grasso, con una festa, dove vengono
distribuiti polenta e salamini per tutti.
Programma
• Domenica 19 - Inaugurazione del Carnevale dei
Piccoli 2017
Alle ore 14.30, tutti i personaggi del Carnevale dei
Piccoli si troveranno in Piazza Aosta, per poi recarsi,
in sfilata, in Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, dove
si svolgerà la cerimonia di investitura del Piccolo
Sindaco e il tradizionale lancio dei palloncini.
Parteciperà alla sfilata la Banda Musicale di
Châtillon.
• Lunedì 20 - Consiglio Comunale
Alle 14.30 i personaggi del Carnevale dei Piccoli si
recheranno presso il Municipio, dove avrà luogo il
Consiglio Comunale.
• Sabato 25 - Carnevale in Fraz. Moron
Dalle ore 12.30 distribuzione di polenta e salamini.
Seguiranno giochi per bambini.
• Domenica 26 - Grande sfilata
Alle ore 14.30 Grande sfilata con partenza da Piazza
Monte Cervino (Via Ponte Romano), sfilata del carro
del Piccolo Sindaco con la partecipazione di carri
allegorici dei paesi limitrofi e gruppi.
A fine sfilata piccolo rinfresco per tutti i partecipanti
in costume presso il Palais Saint-Vincent.
• Martedì 28 - Chiusura del carnevale dei Piccoli 2017
Dalle ore 12.30, in Piazza Aosta, distribuzione della
polenta di Carnevale, in collaborazione con i ristoranti
di Saint-Vincent.
Sono gradite offerte minime di € 5.00 e l’incasso andrà
a totale beneficio dell’Associazione Carnevale dei
Piccoli.
Il Santo Vescovo Martino, il suo nemico Satana; poi il
Console Romano, i Tribuni della Plebe, le Guardie Romane
e il loro Comandante e infine la Ninfa del Lys con le due
Ancelle sono i protagonisti del carnevale storico di PontSaint-Martin. Un momento particolare è la corsa delle
bighe: ogni rione o “Insula” ha una propria biga e un
proprio equipaggio costituito da un auriga e da atletici
ragazzi o ragazze che provvedono al “traino”. Il martedì
è un giorno di sfilata per i carri allegorici. La giornata
termina sotto l’arcata dell’antico ponte romano con il rogo
del Diavolo Satana ed un’esplosione di fuochi d’artificio.

Valtournenche, quando ancora vi erano solo baite per
pascoli, viveva una meravigliosa fanciulla di una bellezza
straordinaria. Il gigante Gargantua, che conosceva bene
queste valli, al ritorno da Zermatt, la vide, se ne innamorò
e la rapì. Decise di nasconderla tra le montagne. Tutti gli
abitanti della Valle, a conoscenza del fatto, si unirono alla
ricerca della fanciulla. Difronte a tanta insistenza il gigante
si arrese. Caricò la fanciulla sulla slitta per riconsegnarla
alla sua gente che organizzò una grande festa alla quale
presero parte tutti gli abitanti della Valle d’Aosta”. Dalla
leggenda della Dama Bianca nacque anche il ballo Rouge
et Noir al quale prendevano parte i personaggi più
importanti, tutti rigorosamente vestiti in rosso e nero.
Siamo nel 1450, Caterina di Challant ed il consorte,
scortati da alcuni uomini armati, scesero a Verrès. Al
suono del piffero e del tamburo tutti si misero a ballare e
Caterina, lasciato il consorte, danza con la balda gioventù
del paese. Gli oltre 500 anni trascorsi non hanno cancellato
il ricordo di quella giornata di festa e così ogni anno tutta
Verrès attende intrepidamente e con molto entusiasmo
la celebrazione del carnevale. carnevale.
Ogni anno vengono proposte sfilate in costume seguite
da un suggestivo veglione nei saloni del castello che
domina il paese. Il Carnevale entra nel clou con la
presentazione dei personaggi nella piazza del paese, al
termine della quale si assiste alla singolare e simpatica
lettura in lingua antica “maccheronica” da parte del
battitore del “manifesto d’intenti della cittadinanza”.

del “Proclama” e ballo di Caterina.
Inizio sfilata con spettacolare fiaccolata e la partecipazione
della filarmonica di Verrès. Ricevimento nella sala
comunale e consegna dei poteri alla Châtelaine da parte
del Sindaco.
Ore 22.30 - Veglionissimo di apertura al castello di Verrès,
con la partecipazione della Châtelaine. Orchestra Show
TimeTravel e DJ set.

Ore 11.30 - I cavalieri del Conte Verde con i maestosi
cavalli e i Signori Alati con i rapaci della falconeria
rendono omaggio alla Caterina.

Il Carnevale di Courmayeur
Un tripudio di colori, suoni e sapori della tradizione, che
si mescola ad un’anima attuale, ironica e irriverente:
questo è il Carnevale ai piedi del Monte Bianco. L’apice si
raggiunge il Martedì Grasso, quando per le strade di
Courmayeur, comincia a diffondersi un buonissimo
profumo di “seuppa”, la tipica zuppa che il Comité di
Courmayeur prepara, fin dalle prime ore del mattino, in
piazza Abbé Henry e che viene distribuita all’ora di pranzo
con fontina, saucisses e pane nero. A colorare il tutto,
l’allegria dei “Beuffon”, il variopinto esercito che ha il
compito di annunciare l’arrivo del Carnevale con il suono
dei campanelli. A chiudere i festeggiamenti, il tradizionale
“Seittòn”, la gara a coppie miste di taglio del tronco.

Il percorso della Marciagranparadiso è considerato tra i più spettacolari e tecnici di tutte le gran fondo italiane, ed i suoi 45
chilometri che si snodano per la maggior parte all’interno del Parco del Gran Paradiso ne fanno una gara davvero unica,
immersa nel silenzio e nella maestosità delle vette valdostane che negli anni hanno visto transitare atleti di grande prestigio.
Nelle passate edizioni sono stati molti i nomi illustri che hanno apposto la propria firma sull’albo d’oro di questa manifestazione
valdostana, ne citiamo solo alcuni: Maurilio De Zolt, Maria Canins Bonaldi, Silvano Barco, Marco Albarello, Giorgio Vanzetta,
Guidina Dal Sasso, Odd Bjoern Hjelmeset, Cristina Paluselli, Giorgio Di Centa, Gabriella Paruzzi, Fabio Pasini. Nomi che non
hanno certo bisogno di presentazioni e che qualificano ancor più questo evento.
La MarciaGranParadiso si svolge su tre giorni e propone due gare da 45 e 25 km, la Classic e la Skating dedicate agli adulti, e
una gara dedicata ai più giovani, la Minimarcia.
Dal 2016 l’evento è entrato a far parte del circuito internazionale Euroloppet.

La mostra, curata da Daria Jorioz e Paolo
Repetto, in collaborazione con la

oltre 50 fotografie di Vittorio Sella. Le
immagini in mostra, risalenti al 1909,
sono tutte vintage (stampate nell’anno
stesso dello scatto) e appartengono ad

una nuova selezione di fotografie
realizzate dal grande artista francese nel
corso della sua straordinaria carriera.
Fil rouge del percorso la iconicità delle
immagini, quelle che maggiormente
hanno saputo conquistare l’imaginario
collettivo e il grande pubblico, a partire
dal celebre bacio del 1950, Le baiser de
l’Hôtel de ville.
Doisneau viene definito per i suoi ritratti
e la sua straordinaria capacità di
raccontare la realtà nella sua quotidianità,
un esponente della fotografia umanista.
E’ lui, meglio di ogni altro, ad aver
immortalato i miti e le icone della Parigi
del ‘900, cogliendone appieno il loro
fascino. Insieme ad Henry CartierBresson è considerato uno dei padri
fondatori del fotogiornalismo di strada.
La sua abilità unica nel cogliere le
emozioni gli deriva dalla sua capacità di
immergersi totalmente nella realtà che
lo circonda, tanto che lui amava definirsi
poeticamente un pescatore di immagini
in opposizione ai fotografi cacciatori.
La mostra al Forte di Bard sarà arricchita
da un’intervista inedita alle due figlie
dell’artista, Annette Doisneau e Francine
Deroudille.

conclusione delle celebrazioni del sesto
centenario della nascita del ducato di

pubblico alcuni significativi documenti
di un’epoca che rappresentò un momento
di particolare prosperità economica e
fioritura artistica degli Stati sabaudi.
Verranno esposte in particolare carte e
pergamene della casata dei signori di
Challant, che furono i più autorevoli
collaboratori di Casa Savoia e i principali
rappresentanti di una stagione storica,
definita a ragione l’âge d’or della Valle
d’Aosta, che vide la costruzione o il
rifacimento di alcuni dei più insigni
monumenti civili e religiosi della nostra

La vie Bohème - liberamente tratto da
Rent - Opera Rock di J. Larson
(Broadway 1996), è una moderna
Bohème, ambientata a New York, che
racconta la storia di un gruppo di
artisti squattrinati. I riferimenti alla
musica e alla sceneggiatura dell’opera
di Puccini sono chiari e dichiarati, pur
essendo fondamentalmente un’opera
rock. Le musiche sono inframmezzate
da brani recitati dall’attrice Paola Corti
che ha scritto per l’occasione un
copione che permette allo spettatore
di intraprendere un viaggio attraverso
le due opere, di coglierne gli aspetti
salienti e le similitudini. Il progetto
coinvolge la classe di canto, il
laboratorio pop-rock, l’atelier d’archi,
il coro Sfom e l’orchestra Sfom e vede
la partecipazione di un’ottantina di
allievi di tutte le classi di strumento
della scuola.

arrivano i miliziani dell’Isis e bruciano il
suo pianoforte, in quanto non “haram”.
A quel punto Aeham decide che è giunta
l’ora di partire e percorre le migliaia di
chilometri che separano Damasco da
Berlino a piedi, su bagnarole di fortuna,
autobus devastati, solo con uno zaino in
spalla e la miseria a tracolla. In Germania
trova rifugio in un motel abbandonato,
dove c’è un pianoforte. Riprende a
suonare, inizia a fare concerti e riceve un
premio per il suo impegno a favore dei
diritti umani. Realizza anche un disco
(che uscirà a breve), incontra Angela
Merkel, Martha Argerich, conquista il
Premio Beethoven. Aeham ce l’ha fatta…

percorso professionale che già li ha
portati a distinguersi in ambito classico,
jazz ed etnico, conseguendo lauree e
master in conservatori italiani o all’estero,
ottenendo borse di studio e vincendo
concorsi nazionali e internazionali.

dimostrato di saperlo fare con tanti
musicisti, rispettando sempre la verità e
la concreta narrazione della sua vita e
quella in cui ognuno di noi si ritrova. Una
spiaggia, una chitarra e dei giovani, ed è
subito cantare insieme, recitando
perfettamente tutti i testi, tutte le strofe
delle sue canzoni. Pieno di questi

zones aux alentours de la ville. Les vols

à travers des images et des objets
ethnographiques qui fixent dans le
temps les savoirs de la culture rurale
comme la culture et la cueillette des
céréales, le travail et la cuisson des
pains dans les anciens fours des
villages, vus à travers la simplicité
des gestes qui redécouv rent le
traditionnel savoir-faire des peuples
alpins.

reportages photos ethnographiques
réalisés dans divers villages de la
Vallée d’Aosta entre les années 1950
et 1960, par des auteurs professionnels:

collectif et le grand public, à partir du
célèbre baiser de 1950, Le baiser de l’Hôtel
de ville. Doisneau se reconnaît par ses
portraits et son extraordinaire capacité
à raconter la réalité dans son aspect
quotidien, selon la photographie
humaniste. C’est lui qui, mieux que
quiconque, a immortalisé les mythes et
les icônes de Paris au XXe siècle, en
mettant pleinement en valeur son
charme. Avec Henri Cartier-Bresson, il
est considéré comme un des pères
fondateurs du photojournalisme de rue.
Son habilité unique consistant à cueillir
les émotions lui vient de sa capacité à se
plonger totalement dans la réalité qui
l’entoure, si bien qu’il aimait se définir
poétiquement comme un pêcheur
d’images, en opposition aux chasseurs
d’images.
L’exposition au Fort de Bard sera enrichie
d’une interview inédite aux deux filles de
l’artiste, Annette Doisneau et Francine
Deroudille.

dont les protagonistes sont les enfants
des écoles de Torgnon qui, avec
quelques volontaires, ont semé le blé
dans un champ.
Cette année, au mois d’août, les
enfants ont effectué la moisson et, en
novembre, ils ont moulu le blé dans le
moulin à pierre de Petit Monde… en
faisant renaître les gestes anciens
presque oubliés qui se concluront avec
la cuisson du pain dans le four de
Mongnod.

L’exposition, qui est une conclusion des
célébrations du sixième centenaire de la
naissance du duché de Savoie, présente
au public des documents significatifs
d’une époque qui représenta un moment
de particulière prospérité économique
et d’essor artistique des États du duché
de Savoie. Vous pourrez admirer les
papiers et parchemins de la Maison des
seigneurs de Challant, qui furent les
principaux représentants d’une époque
définie à juste mesure comme l’âge d’or
de la Vallée d’Aoste, qui vit la construction
ou la restauration de quelques-uns parmi
les plus importants monuments civils et
religieux de notre région. Un dispositif
d’explications en deux langues (italien et
français) accompagnera le visiteur à la
découverte du XVe siècle et de ses
protagonistes en Vallée d’Aoste.

Winter Eco Trail by night
Le parcours de Marche Grand-Paradis est considéré comme un des plus
spectaculaires et techniques de tous les parcours de grand ski de fond italiens.
Ses 45 km se déroulent pour la plupart à l’intérieur du Parc du Grand-Paradis, ce
qui en fait une compétition unique, plongée au cœur du silence et de la majesté
des sommets valdôtains qui ont vu passer depuis des années des athlètes
prestigieux. La Marche Grand-Paradis se déroule sur trois jours et propose deux
compétitions de 45 et 25 km, la Classic et la Skating dédiées aux adultes ainsi
qu’une compétition pour les plus jeunes, la Mini-marche.
Depuis 2016, l’événement fait partie du circuit international Euroloppet.

de la Coumba Frèide
La tradition narre que la naissance de ce carnaval
est liée au passage de Napoléon par le col du GrandSaint-Bernard, en mai 1800, pendant sa campagne
d’Italie. Les costumes seraient donc la transposition
allégorique des uniformes des soldats français.
Pendant le cortège, les personnages masqués vont
rendre visite aux familles, entrent dans les maisons,
dansent dans les rues et les places, mangent et
boivent ce qu’on leur offre.

Le Carnaval des petits
Un mois avant la manifestation, les maîtresses
des écoles élémentaires commencent à préparer
les enfants pour les élections du petit Maire et
de ses assistants.
Les enfants de la dernière année de l’école
élémentaire sont les potentiels candidats aux
charges évoquées.
Chacun est libre de déposer sa candidature et
après une véritable campagne électorale, où
chaque candidat cherchera à récupérer le plus
de votes possible, les enfants sont appelés à
exprimer leur vote.
Les élus sont contactés par le comité du carnaval
qui leur fournit les costumes et les aide à «entrer»
dans le personnage auquel ils sont destinés.
La manifestation dure une semaine et se termine
le mardi gras avec une fête où sont distribués
polenta et saucisson pour tout le monde.

du Monde
À l’occasion du carnaval, le MAIN ouvre au public
avec horaire sans interruption.
Une occasion pour découvrir les curiosités et
particularités des 150 masques exposés, provenant
de la Vallée d’Aoste, du Trentin-Haut-Adige, de
Suisse, d’Afrique, d’Asie et d’Océanie.
L’exposition temporaire présente les masques en
bois à porter, un objet simple mais symbolique, qui
suggère une confrontation et un dialogue entre

Retour de la Dame Blanche
Il existe une légende à la base de ce personnage
dont le costume et le caractère parlent d’un géant,
Gargantua, qui enleva une jeune fille d’une beauté
extraordinaire. Tous les habitants de la
Valtournenche s’unirent à la recherche de la jeune
fille: face à tant d’insistance, le géant se rendit.
Il installa la jeune fille sur une luge pour la rendre
à ses concitoyens qui organisèrent une grande fête
à laquelle participèrent tous les habitants de la
Vallée d’Aoste.
De cette légende de la Dame Blanche naquit aussi
le bal Rouge et Noir, auquel participaient les
person nages les plus i mpor ta nt s, tous
rigoureusement vêtus en rouge et en noir.

Rendez-vous à l’amphithéâtre face à la mairie.
Défilé de masques, de groupes historiques
valdôtains et provenant de villages hors de la
vallée, de chars allégoriques, dans les rues du
village.
À l’arrivée sur la place du village, goûter pour
tout le monde.
Saint Martin l’évêque, son ennemi Satan, le
Consul romain, les tribuns de la plèbe les gardes
romains et leur commandant, et enfin la
Nymphe du Lys accompagnée de ses deux
servantes: voilà les protagonistes du carnaval
historique de Pont-Saint-Martin.
Un moment particulier du carnaval est la course
des chars: chaque quartier ou insula a son char
et un équipage constitué d’un aurige et de jeunes
homes et femmes sportifs qui tirent le char. Le
mardi est un jour de défilé pour les chars
allégoriques provenant du village ou des autres
centres proches du Piémont et de la Vallée
d’Aoste.
La journée se termine sous les arcades de
l’ancien pont romain avec le bûcher du diable et
une explosion de feux d’artifice.

Polenta et Mërluss (morue) à la Maison du
Boulodrome.
Nous sommes en 1450. Catherine de Challant et
son époux, escortés de quelques hommes armés,
se rendent à Verrès. Au son du fifre et du tambour,
tout le monde se met à danser et Catherine
abandonne son époux pour accorder des danses
aux vaillants jeunes hommes du village. Les cinq
cents ans passés n’ont pas annulé le souvenir de
cette journée de fête.
Ainsi, chaque année, tout Verrès attend avec
impatience et enthousiasme la célébration du
carnaval. Le rôle des nobles est très demandé par
les citoyens.

Carnaval d’Aymavilles
Une explosion de couleurs, de sons et de saveurs
de la tradition, qui se mélange à l’âme actuelle,
ironique et souvent irrévérencieuse: voici le
carnaval au pied du Mont Blanc. Le clou de la fête,
c’est le Mardi gras, quand, dans les rues de
Courmayeur, on commence à sentir une bonne
odeur de seuppa, la soupe typique que le Comité
de Courmayeur prépare avec soin, dès les
premières heures du jour, sur la place Abbé Henry,
et qui est, comme de tradition, distribuée au
déjeuner avec du fromage Fontina, des saucisses
et du pain noir. Pour colorer le tout, les Beuffon
apportent de la bonne humeur, avec leur cortège
coloré, en annonçant l’arrivée du carnaval au son
des cloches. Pour clore les festivités, le traditionnel
Seittòn, la compétition en couples mixtes de taille
de tronc, puis les remises de prix et enfin, musique
et bals jusque tard dans la soirée.

Les vidéos où on le voit jouer sur les
décombres font le tour du monde: tout
le monde connaît son histoire. Mais le
jour de son anniversaire, les milices
de l’Isis arrivent et brûlent son piano,
considéré comme haram (interdit).
C’est alors qu’Aeham décide de partir
et parcourt les milliers de kilomètres
qui séparent Damas de Berlin à pied,
dans des vieilles voitures de fortune,
des bus dévastés, avec juste un sac à
dos ne transportant que sa misère.
En Allemagne, il trouve refuge dans
un ancien motel abandonné où se
trouve un piano.
Il recommence à jouer, commence à
faire des concerts et reçoit un prix
pour son effort en faveur des droits de
l’homme.
Il réalise également un disque (qui
sortira bientôt), rencontre Angela
Merkel, Martha Argerich et gagne le
prix Beethoven. Aeham s’en est sorti…

La vie Bohème - inspiré librement de
Rent -, opéra rock di J. Larson
(Broadway 1996), est une bohème
moderne, qui se passe à New York,
racontant l’histoire d’un groupe
d’artistes sans le sou. Les références à
la musique et au décor de l’opéra de
Puccini sont claires et déclarées,
même s’il s’agit d’un opéra rock. Les
musiques sont entrecoupées de
parties récitées par l’actrice Paola
Corti qui a écrit pour l’occasion un
texte qui permet au spectateur de faire
un voyage à travers les deux œuvres,
d’en saisir les aspects les plus
caractéristiques et les similitudes. Le
projet accueille également la classe de
chant, l’atelier pop-rock, l’atelier
d’instruments à cordes frottées, le
chœur Sfom et l’orchestre Sfom, et
salue la participation d’environ
quatre-vingts élèves de toutes les
classes d’instruments de l’école.

Le concert, un voyage de Schumann à
nos jours, a pour protagonistes de jeunes
musiciens qui ont terminé brillamment
leurs études à la Sfom, trouvant dans ses
cours et ateliers les stimulations
nécessaires pour transformer une
passion en quelque chose de plus
important: ils ont entrepris puis conclu
l’expérience dans cette école, faisant
ainsi un parcours professionnel qui leur
permet de se distinguer dans le
classique, le jazz et la musique ethnique,
d’obtenir des diplômes dans des
conservatoires italiens et étrangers, des
bourses d’étude et de gagner des

The route of the Gran Paradiso Cross-Country Skiing Competition is considered
to be one of the most spectacular and technically challenging of all Italian crosscountry runs. The forty-five kilometres that wind mainly within the Gran Paradiso
National Park make this a unique event, set in silent spaces between the majestic
peaks of the Aosta Valley. Over the years these peaks have looked down on the
passage of world-famous athletes. The Gran Paradiso Cross-Country competition
is held over three days and consists of two races of 45 km and 25 km. There is the
Classic and the Skating for adults and a race for younger competitors, the
Minimarcia. Since 2016, it has been a part of the Euroloppet international circuit.

Robert Doisneau. Icônes presents a new
selection of photographs created by this
great French artist over the course of his
remarkable career. The show is curated
by the Robert Doisneau Atelier of Paris
and the Fortress of Bard Association.
A running theme is the iconic nature of
images which have had the greatest
impact on the public’s collective
imagination, beginning with the famed
Kiss of 1950, Le baiser de l’Hôtel de ville.
An exponent of humanist photography,
Doisneau’s art is defined by his portraits
and his great ability to convey day-to-day
reality. It was he who, better than any
other, immortalised the myths and
iconography of 20th Century Paris, fully
capturing its charm. Alongside Henry
Cartier-Bresson, Doisneau is considered
one of the founders of street photojournalism. His unique ability to capture
emotions derives from his capacity to
immerse himself fully in the surrounding
situation - to the extent that he defined
himself by the poetic name of ‘fisherman
of images’, as opposed to more
‘predatory’ photographers.
The exhibition at Fortress of Bard will be
embellished by an unpublished
interview with the artist’s two daughters,

volunteers, who together sowed grain
in a field.
This year in the month of August, the
children harvested the crop and in
November milled the grain in the
stone mill of Petit Monde, thereby reenacting ancient gestures which have
today been almost forgotten. This has
led to the baking of the bread in the
Mongnod bakery.

This documentary exhibition comes at
the end of a year that marks the sixth
centenary of the birth of the Duchy of
Savoy. The exhibition presents to the
public some significant documents from
an epoch of particular economic
prosperity and artistic flowering of the
States of Savoy. In particular, deeds and
parchments will be on show from the di
Challant lineage. These were the most
authoritative collaborators with the
House of Savoy and among the principal
representatives of a historical period
known as the Golden Age of the Aosta
Valley, which saw the construction or
renovation of some of the most renowned
civic and religious building of our region.
In discovering the 15th Century and its
leading figures in the Aosta Valley,
visitors will be accompanied by a
bilingual French-Italian commentary.

Historical ‘Coumba Frèide’
Carnival
Tradition links the birth of this carnival to
Napoleon’s crossing of the Great St Bernard Pass
in May 1800, during his Italian Campaign. The
costumes are thus an allegorical treatment of
the uniforms of French soldiers.
During the process, masquerades enter into
people’s houses and dance through the streets
and squares, eating and drinking what is offered
to them.

Children’s Carnival
One month before the event, primary school
teachers will start preparing the children to elect
their carnival mayor and cortege.
Fifth-year primary school students will be
potential candidates for these offices. Anyone
can offer to stand as a candidate, and following
a thorough-going electoral campaign, in which
each candidate will attempt to secure as many
votes as possible, children will be called upon
to cast their votes.
Those elected will be contacted by the Carnival
Committee, which will provide them with
costumes and help them ‘enter into’ their
allotted characters.
The event lasts for one week, finishing with a
celebration on Shrove Tuesday, at which polenta
and small salamis are handed out to all.

To mark the Carnival season, MAIN is opening to

exhibition is of wearable masks made from wood

Return of the White Lady

The legend behind this custom tells of a giant,
Gargantua, who abducted a maiden of extraordinary
beauty. All the inhabitants of Valtournenche
gathered together to search for the girl. Faced with
such firm resolve, the giant gave up his prize. He
loaded the maiden onto his sled to send her back to
her folk, who organised a great feast of celebration,
attended by all the inhabitants of the Aosta Valley.
This legend of the of the Dama Bianca also gave rise
to the dance of the Rouge et Noir, in which all the
most important personages would take part, each
one without exception dressed in red and black.

Meeting up at the amphitheatre in front of the
Town Hall: Masked parade of historic groups
from the Aosta Valley and beyond and of
allegorical floats in the streets of the town. On
arrival, an afternoon snack for all in the square.
There’s the holy Bishop Martino, his arch enemy
Satan; there’s the Roman Consul, the People’s
Tribunes, the Roman Guards with their
Commanding Centurion and finally the Nymph
Lys accompanied by her two Handmaids. These
are the leading characters in the historical
carnival of Pont-Saint-Martin.
A special feature of the carnival is the chariot
race: each neighbourhood or ‘insula’ has its own
chariot with a crew consisting of a charioteer
and some athletic youths who supply the ‘power
train’.
Tuesday is a day of pageant for the allegorical
floats, which originate both from the town itself
and from surrounding townships of Piedmont
and the Aosta Valley. The day concludes under
the arch of the ancient Roman Bridge with the
burning of Satan the Devil and stunning
fireworks.

The year is 1450, Catherine of Challant and her
consort Introd, escorted by a group of armed men,
came down to Verrès. Having lunched at the house
of the Reverend Pietro de Chissé, Provost of the
collegiate church of Saint Gilles, they went down to
the public square below the church. To the sound
of fife and drum, they start to dance and, leaving
her consort, Catherine dances reels with the
dashing youths of the town. At the height of the
merriment, all call out in unison: “Long live Introd
and Madame de Challant!” It is a cry of joy that
echoes on to this day. The intervening five hundred
plus years have not erased the memory of that
festive day, as every year the whole of Verrès looks
forward with great enthusiasm to the day of the
carnival. The townsfolk vie with one another for a
role of one of the noble personages.

A riot of traditional colours, sounds and flavours
blend in with a contemporary spirit of often
irreverent irony - this is the carnival held at the
foot of Mont Blanc. The festival reaches its climax
on Shrove Tuesday. From morning onwards in
each neighbourhood, “le vieux et la vieille”,
masquerades representing an old man and old
woman, roam the streets announcing the arrival
of the carnival with the ringing of cowbells.
Meanwhile, a wonderful aroma of “seuppa”
begins to percolate through the streets of
Courmayeur. Since early morning, t he
Courmayeur Committee has been busy preparing
this local soup in Abbé Henry Square. By
tradition, the soup is served at lunchtime with
fontina cheese, sausage and black bread. The
scene is enlivened by the activities of the
“beuffon”, a multi-coloured troupe tasked with
announcing the arrival of the carnival with the
sound of bells. The irresistible energy of the
Beuffon sweeps all before them through the
streets of the town as they accompany a parade
of floats depicting themes inspired by local events
of the past year. The floats pass through the town
centre twice: the first lap is one of introduction,
while the second reveals the end of the story.
Festivities are rounded off by the traditional
performance of the “Seittòn”. This is a competition
between mixed couples to saw through a tree
trunk. The prize-giving ceremony is succeeded
by music and dancing late into the night.

playing once again; he gives concerts

commitment to human rights. He also
makes a record (soon to be released),
meets Angela Merkel, Martha Argerich,
and wins the Beethoven Prize. Aehram

(The Bohemian Life)
La vie Bohème, freely adapted from the
rock musical Rent by Jonathan Larson
(Broadway 1996), this is a modern
Boehme, set in New York, that tells the
story of a group of penniless artists.
References to the music and stage
settings of Puccini are obvious and
ostensive, although the work remains
essentially a rock opera.
Musical pieces are interspersed with
passages performed by the actress Paola
Corti, who has for this performance
written a script that will enable the
audience to trace and to appreciate the
running similarities between the two
works.
The project involves the singing class,
the pop-rock workshop, the string atelier
at Aosta’s Sfom (School for Musical
Training and Orientation), the Sfom
chorus and the Sfom orchestra. About
eighty students drawn from all of the
school’s instrument classes are involved.

Mogol and his songs. ‘Living is what I do
for a living.’ This is one of those now
famous lines that those who have had
the patience to study his texts will know
to be true and written by an honest man,
a man with a calling to communicate
with the world in a simple and authentic
way. He is a man who knows how to read
a piece of music without words and to
find in it what we call simply a good song.
It is a gift Mogol has proven in his work
with many musicians, underscoring an
ability never to be deflected from the
true and concrete facts of his life and the
life we all find ourselves living. A beach,
a guitar, and a group of youngsters, who
soon are singing together, recalling
perfectly all the words and verses of his
songs. Full of such interests, Mogol will
be there to spend some time with you, as
among friends, leaving the task of
enacting a portion of his limitless
musical production to the CET Band. He
will also present his latest book, just like
a true friend would, as if we were sitting
at home together by his fireside.
