Reading Comprehension (TIME: 30 min.) 1. Read the following text and choose the correct answers. Happiness and memory According to a report on neurological research published last year in an American scientific journal, there is a close connection between happiness and memory retention. The key explanation for this process is identified in the brain’s release of dopamine, which is stimulated by pleasure. This substance reinforces the learning processes and memorization strategies of the brain. Neurologists suggest that this finding is particularly relevant for young learners and adolescents whose brains are particularly rich in dopamine. As an experiment, they gave students a list of words to memorize. Some of these students were then shown a comedy video immediately afterwards. After a week, these students were able to remember a lot more words than the students who hadn’t seen the video. The results of this research are also supported by the New Economics Foundation. Their intensive interviewing campaign in British schools in 2004 showed that feeling happy when learning is closely connected to good academic results. Listen and answer the questions for each one. The first two are multiple choice. The third one is true or false. NEWS ITEM 1 Now you have 35 seconds to look at the questions for NEWS ITEM 1. [35 sec. pause] [Tone] All scientists agree that the climate of the Earth is changing. In the past, changes were due to natural causes but the changes we've seen over recent years are mainly the result of human behaviour rather than natural changes in the atmosphere. Scientists all over the world are using computer models to come up with predictions for our future environment and weather. One of the main concerns is the 8 _____________________________________________________________________________ Proprietà esclusiva del Centro Linguistico Università degli Studi di Pavia – riproduzione vietata. greenhouse effect. Scientists think it is already too late to prevent global warming and subsequent climate change but, by reducing greenhouse gases, we could still limit its impact. As temperatures rise, the sea will absorb heat from the atmosphere, causing it to expand and therefore creating sea level rises. [20 sec. pause] Now listen again. [The recording is repeated] You now have one minute to check your answers. [1 min. pause] NEWS ITEM 2 Now you have 35 seconds to look at the questions for News Item 2. [35 sec. pause] [Tone] Haiti was the first country in the Americas to abolish slavery, but poverty and social breakdown led to serious problems with child labour. Most of the children are employed as domestic servants: they look after the children in the family, clean the house and do the laundry. Every morning and evening they are also sent to get water for the households in the city. Only a few houses in Haiti have running water; for everyone else there are public pumps and fountains, often kilometres away. Until recently, the Haitian government didn’t acknowledge the problem, because child labour was considered a sort of national tradition. Today, some local human rights groups are fighting to provide children with food and education and also to teach the poorest families that they have a duty to look after their children. [1 min. pause] NEWS ITEM 3 Now you have 20 seconds to look at the questions for News Item 3. [20 sec. pause] [Tone] The London Police are still investigating the murder of a 33-year-old man who was killed last weekend. Adam Lee was stabbed to death in an east London street on Saturday night as he was going back home after a party with some friends. 9 _____________________________________________________________________________ Proprietà esclusiva del Centro Linguistico Università degli Studi di Pavia – riproduzione vietata. This morning a Scotland Yard spokesman said that the investigation is continuing and all lines of inquiry remain open. [20 sec. pause] Now listen again. [35 sec. pause] [Tone] Jack: Anna: Jack: Anne: Jack: Anne: Jack: Anne: Jack: So, where would you like to go this summer? We’ve really got to decide… You’re right, if we want to rent a flat for August we mustn’t leave it too late… A flat! Yes, Ron was telling me about this beautiful place his cousin went to last year, in the south of Sicily. It’s cheap and very near the seaside and… It might be cheap, but that’d be almost like staying at home! All the shopping and cleaning and cooking! I think we should go for a bed and breakfast instead. But you know that Ron and I like cooking! We can cook the sort of food we like and we’ll save money on that… Yes but you know I’ve just had a pay rise. Well, I’m sorry if Sharon and Ron and I can’t afford the same luxuries as you! And anyway renting a flat is not like being on a camping site, you know! You won’t have to walk miles to have a shower! Ok, ok, but you have to promise you’ll do all the cooking for me, breakfast included! [20 sec. pause] Now listen again. [The recording is repeated] You now have one minute to check your answers. Did you see that fantastic volleyball match last night? Yes Mark, it was great! Actually I think it’s the best volleyball match I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t believe it when we won in the end. I know, it was so exciting. You weren’t sure who was going to win the game until the very end. Did Tony and Sarah watch the match with you? Yes, they did. Well, you know Tony isn’t that keen on sports but he was at home last night, so he ended up watching the match. By the end of it, he was as excited as the rest of us! I think sport is really the only good thing you can see on TV. Oh, I don’t know. I like some kinds of sports, but I hate football for example. You must be joking! Don’t tell me you’d rather read a book instead of watching a football match? For sure! [20 sec. pause] Now listen again. [The recording is repeated] You now have one minute to check your answers.
