Directives for the Swiss Finance Institute PhD in Finance at USI
Le direttive di seguito riportate valgono per il
programma di dottorato in Finanza offerto dallo Swiss
Finance Institute (SFI) presso l’Università della
Svizzera italiana (USI). I numeri degli articoli fanno
riferimento ai corrispondenti articoli delle direttive di
dottorato della Facoltà di Economia dell’USI che il
presente documento va ad integrare.
2. Titolo
Il programma di dottorato SFI conferisce il titolo di
Dottore in Scienze Economiche con specializzazione
in Finanza / SFI PhD in Finance.
4. Collegio Dottorale
In linea di principio, il direttore del programma di
dottorato in finanza è un membro del collegio dottorale.
The present directives are intended as guidelines for
the doctoral degree programme in Finance offered by
the Swiss Finance Institute (SFI) at Università della
Svizzera italiana (USI).
Articles are numbered in the same sequence as in the
corresponding Regulations for the degree of PhD of
the Faculty, which these directives complement.
2. Degree title
The SFI PhD programme in Finance confers the title
of: SFI PhD in Finance; respectively, in Italian,
Dr.sc.ec. con specializzazione in Finanza.
4. Graduate Studies Committee
In principle, the director of the doctoral programme in
Finance is a member of the Graduate Studies
Committee of the Faculty.
6. Giuria di Tesi
Al fine di conseguire il dottorato in finanza SFI, la tesi
del candidato deve essere diretta da un professore che
è membro dell’SFI al momento della difesa.
La giuria di tesi deve includere un professore con
cattedra (‘chair’) SFI. Se necessario, tale professore
può provenire da altre università.
La giuria di tesi dev’essere composta da almeno tre
membri (in caso di cotutela di tesi, la commissione
dev’essere composta da almeno quattro membri).
Un membro della giuria dev’essere esterno
all’università.
6. The Board of Examiners
To be awarded the SFI PhD in Finance, a candidate’s
thesis must be directed by a professor who is a
member of the SFI at the time of the defence.
The Board of Examiners (or Jury) must include a SFI
chair professor. If necessary, that professor may be
from other Universities.
The Board of Examiners must be composed of at least
three members. In the event of a joint supervision, the
Jury shall comprise at least four members.
One member of the jury must be an external examiner.
8. Procedura di ammissione al programma di
dottorato
I candidati inviano le loro richieste di ammissione al
programma di dottorato SFI seguendo le procedure
indicate sul sito web dell’Istituto di Finanza dell’USI.
Una pre-selezione dei candidati è condotta dai membri
dell’Istituto di Finanza dell'USI.
La decisione finale di ammissione segue i regolamenti
dell’USI.
8. Admission procedure for the PhD programme
Candidates apply for the SFI PhD degree programme
in Finance following the procedures described on the
web pages of USI’s Finance Institute.
An initial selection of applications received is
conducted by members of the Finance Institute, USI.
The final decision on admission is made according to
the University’s Regulations.
13. Valutazione dello stato di avanzamento nel
programma di dottorato
13. Progress review
Gli studenti iscritti al programma di dottorato SFI
all’USI devono soddisfare i seguenti requisiti.
Students registered for the SFI PhD degree
programme must satisfy the following requirements.
Gli studenti devono seguire i corsi obbligatori del primo
anno e conseguire un totale di crediti formativi pari a
30 ECTS. La valutazione degli studenti in tali corsi si
effettua su una scala da 1 a 10. Una valutazione pari a
6 è considerata sufficiente per il conseguimento dei
crediti.
Per proseguire nel dottorato, gli studenti devono
sostenere con successo un esame generale
(‘comprehensive exam’) alla fine del primo anno.
Per essere ammessi all’esame generale, gli studenti
devono aver sostenuto gli esami del primo anno. Ai fini
dell’ammissione è concesso tuttavia un debito
formativo di 12 ETCS (due corsi). Gli studenti con un
debito superiore ai 12 ECTS non sono ammessi
all’esame generale e sono perciò esclusi dal
programma di dottorato dopo il primo anno. Non esiste
la possibilità di recuperare il debito formativo prima
dell’esame generale.
L’esame generale si compone di tre parti distinte
afferenti ai corsi del primo anno. Al fine di sostenere
con successo l’esame generale, gli studenti devono
ottenere una valutazione almeno pari a 6 come media
delle tre sezioni. Non è concesso un secondo tentativo
agli studenti che non passano l’esame generale.
Gli studenti che hanno un debito formativo non
superiore a 12 ECTS ed hanno sostenuto con
successo l’esame generale devono recuperare i crediti
mancanti nel corso del secondo anno. Tali crediti
possono essere recuperati sostenendo nuovamente gli
esami del primo anno o sostenendo esami facoltativi
del secondo anno. Tale scelta è fatta in accordo con il
direttore di tesi.
In seguito all’ammissione al secondo anno di dottorato
gli studenti scelgono un argomento di tesi e un
direttore di tesi.
Nel corso del secondo anno gli studenti devono
scrivere un articolo scientifico (‘term paper’) su un
argomento di loro scelta. Alla fine del secondo anno
accademico tale articolo è sottoposto alla valutazione
del direttore di tesi il quale fornisce una valutazione per
iscritto in accordo con il regolamento dell’Università.
Gli studenti devono inoltre presentare tale articolo alla
facoltà dell’Istituto di Finanza nel corso di un
seminario.
L’articolo scientifico redatto nel corso del secondo
anno deve rispettare criteri di qualità che sono stabiliti

Students shall attend the first-year compulsory courses
(core courses) for a total of 30 ETCS. Grades range
from 1 to 10, where 6 is the ‘pass’ mark entitling
students to obtain credit points.
To move on to the next stage in the doctoral
programme, students are expected to pass a general
(“comprehensive”) exam at the end of the first year.
Admission to the comprehensive exam is granted only
to students who have successfully passed the firstyear exams. Alternatively, students may claim up to 12
ECTS points against a maximum of two failed core
course examinations. Students who exceed this limit
(12 ECTS, two failed exams) are excluded from the
PhD after the first year. No re-take is allowed during
the first year.
The comprehensive exam consists of three separate
sections pertaining to first-year core courses. To pass
the comprehensive exam, students need to obtain an
average grade of 6 across the three sections. The
comprehensive exam can be taken only once.
Students whose fail record does not exceed 12 ECTS
and have successfully taken the comprehensive exam
shall make up for the missing credits during the second
year. The missing credits can be reclaimed by retaking the core exams or by sitting exams in secondyear elective subjects. The student shall decide, in
agreement with his thesis director.
Having been admitted to the second year of the
programme, SFI PhD students in Finance select a
thesis topic and a thesis director to supervise their
research work.
During the second year, students are also required to
write a term paper on a topic of their choice. At the end
of the second academic year, the student submits his
paper to the thesis director, who then drafts an
assessment report in accordance with the University’s
Regulations. Students are required to present the term
paper in front of the Institute members in the course of
a seminar.
The second-year term paper has to satisfy sound
quality standards set by the thesis director. Should the
term paper prove to be inadequate, the thesis director
may decide to withdraw from his supervision of the
student. The student may then apply to the Graduate
Studies Committee to be assigned another thesis
director. If the Committee is unable to find a new thesis

direttore di tesi lo studente può essere escluso dal
dottorato SFI presso l’USI.
