Modern Italian shipbuilding is closely connected to the history of the
transformation of the Italian economy and of the large manufacturing
groups involved in the process, Ansaldo, Piaggio, Breda, Italcantieri etc.
Fincantieri was founded in December 1959 as a state financial holding
company and brought together a rich heritage of people, skills and ships.
Over 7,000 ships have been built in the course of 200 years of history of
shipbuilding, several of which are still remembered today.
Fincantieri is a dynamic group, always looking for innovative solutions
in order to keep abreast of the times and at the same time guarantee a
successful synergy between tradition, experience and innovation.

Over the course of time Fincantieri has evolved and in 1984 became an operating
company, from the outset one of the largest and most diversified shipbuilding
groups in the world. Today the history of Fincantieri continues to be that of its
ships, a fleet comprising cruise ships and ferries, a full range of merchant
vessels, and high-tech naval vessels. These vessels are floating showcases of
Made in Italy reflecting the commitment of a united team which is made up of
Fincantieri’s workforce and the many companies in the supply chain, all of whom
contribute to building unique ships. This is a company which is capable of adapting
and renewing itself in order to take up and manage complex, challenging projects
and create value for all the stakeholders involved.

The Group, with its head office in Trieste, has almost 20,000 employees worldwide (8,400 in Italy) and 21 shipyards in 3 different continents. In January 2013,
Fincantieri completed its acquisition of STX OSV - a company listed on the
Singapore Stock Exchange and now renamed VARD. As a result, Fincantieri
doubled its size and is now fifth in rank in the world, after 4 Korean shipbuilding
companies. Nowadays Fincantieri is the only Western shipbuilder that can
compete with the Asian giants thanks to the range and the added value of its
products.

time a strategic necessity and an ethical imperative. Today – and more and
more in the future – sustainability means competitiveness on the market and
reliability in the local community.
The supply of full energy in an environmentally sustainable way and at
accessible prices is one of the hardest global challenges, made even more
complex by the supply guarantee requirements. Given this context, the
challenge for the R&D team in the Fincantieri Group is to select the most
important technologies of the future, with the greatest innovation potential.
The development of material science and technology, light hull design,
reduction of fluid dynamic resistance and propulsion will contribute to the
creation of new concepts for low-impact ships needed by 2020.

the energy priorities for the next ten years and of the actions to be taken in
order to face the energy saving challenge, to create a market with competitive
prices and to strengthen its technological leadership.
By means of its strategies, the Group embraced the International Maritime
Organization (IMO) goal, synthesized in the IMO slogan “Safe, secure and

The subsidiary CETENA - the Italian Ship Research Centre - in cooperation with
the Fincantieri Research and Innovation department, is the main R&D asset in
the Group with significant outcome in terms of product innovation, safety and
environmental sustainability.
Its activities focus mainly on air and acoustic pollution produced during navigation;
their reduction is of primary importance to allow the ships to enter protected
waters.
PLASMARE is one of the most innovative projects of Fincantieri and CETENA and
has the aim to create sea-borne plant for the treatment of municipal waste, with
zero pollution emissions and power self-sufficient thanks to the production of
syngas and electric energy.
Fincantieri has a leading role also in other important co-shared international
projects connected to sustainability like BESST (Breakthrough in European Ship
and Shipbuilding Technologies) and MC/WAP (fuel cells), as well in national ones,
like ECOMOS (gas emissions reduction program).

Fincantieri’s success in the cruise ship business sector is deeply rooted. Already
in the early 1900s the two shipyards of Genoa and Trieste were world leaders,
building ships which were distinctive for their design, elegant interior furnishings and engineering.
Of the many ships built one of the most memorable was the Rex, possibly the
most famous, classical Italian liner, the height of luxury and elegance. Built at
Genoa shipyard, the Rex is remembered for having won the Blue Ribbon in 1933
by beating the record for crossing the Atlantic, an achievement few other liners
had accomplished.

da una lunga tradizione. Sin dagli inizi del Novecento i due poli cantieristici di
Genova e Trieste diventano protagonisti indiscussi a livello mondiale realizzando
navi che già allora si distinguevano per design, eleganza degli allestimenti
interni e soluzioni ingegneristiche adottate. Tra le molte navi realizzate spicca
il Rex, forse il più famoso ed iconografico transatlantico italiano, top del lusso e
dell’eleganza. Nato nel cantiere di Genova, il Rex ha legato il suo nome alla
conquista del Nastro Azzurro, battendo nel 1933 il record della traversata
atlantica, primato conquistato da pochi altri transatlantici.

Fincantieri was one of the first in the 1980’s to follow the new trend for
cruise holidays in the tourist industry and to enter the market drawing on
the Company’s experience and prestige acquired in previous years as a
transatlantic shipbuilder.
The Crown Princess, which was delivered in 1990, is perhaps one of the
most beautiful ships of our times with its dolphin skyline, designed by Renzo
Piano to evoke the outline of the sea. This ship is the forerunner of a fleet of
over 60 cruise ships designed by Fincantieri, a fleet even further enlarged
after the delivery of Costa Fascinosa and Carnival Breeze, the newborn of
the Marghera and Monfalcone shipyards.
Ambassador of technology and design, engineering expertise and creativity,
Fincantieri is today a leading player in the cruise ship sector, with a market
share that, since 1995, never fell below 25% and at times reached over 50%.
A trend expected to be confirmed by the new ships to set sail in the next
years.

La Crown Princess, consegnata nel 1990, è forse una delle più belle navi dei
nostri tempi con il suo skyline da delfino, forma emotivamente collegata al
mare disegnata da Renzo Piano. È la capostipite di una flotta di oltre 60 navi
da crociera firmate Fincantieri, cresciuta ulteriormente con le consegne di
Costa Fascinosa e Carnival Breeze, le ultime nate nei cantieri di Marghera e

Design and construction solutions have been developed from the cruise sector
to further enhance Fincantieri’s product.
The customer portfolio includes a number of the most important Italian and
foreign shipowners: Grimaldi, Moby, Tirrenia, Finnlines, Tallink, Neptune, P&O

The takeover of the Norwegian company VARD (ex STX OSV) marked an
important step in the offshore field for Fincantieri, positioning the Group
among top-ranking shipbuilders worldwide and thereby expanding its
portfolio of complex offshore support vessels, including Anchor Handling Tug
Supply (AHTS) vessels, Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) and Offshore Subsea
Construction Vessels (OSCV).
A consolidated experience in complex projects management; a great design
centre; a network of innovative designers and specialized high quality
suppliers; high profile shipyards and a deep knowledge of the market. These
are the assets that made Fincantieri a leader in the construction of Non
Standard Offshore units.
In addition to this, the cross-fertilization between the Offshore and the other
Business Units (Naval, Merchant, Mega Yachts) as well as the consequent and
constant sharing of competence (best practices, technological excellence and
operative efficiency) allow a constant product innovation.
Thanks to this approach we can offer to even the most demanding owners

Fincantieri acts in the ship repairs and conversions market working, from
Europe to the United States, in planned and extraordinary maintenance,
refurbishment of passenger ships as well as merchant ships and offshore.
The Group provides technical support and assistance in planning and
managing maintenance programs, accurately calculating how long the vessel
will be out of service, co-ordinating and carrying out supply activities, in
addition to carrying out the work in the shipyard.
Technical expertise and well-established production and technological
capacity and capabilities mean that Fincantieri is able to meet all the
customer’s requirements and guarantee high quality services and contained
delivery time.
Fincantieri opera nel mercato delle riparazioni e trasformazioni navali

In the field of naval vessels Fincantieri boasts a history of over 2,000 ships for
the Italian Navy and many foreign Navies.
The Company is capable of designing and building a wide range of surface
vessels, aircraft carriers, frigates, corvettes and patrol vessels in addition to
auxiliary vessels and submarines.
Fincantieri supports ships throughout their whole lifecycle offering logistic
support and after-sales services. The Company can guarantee both
maintenance programmes of an ordinary and extraordinary nature or refitting
at its own facilities or at one chosen by the customer.
La storia di Fincantieri nel campo delle navi militari è caratterizzata dalla
costruzione di più di 2.000 unità realizzate per conto della Marina Militare
Italiana e di numerose Marine estere. L’Azienda è in grado di progettare e

Fincantieri is the leading partner of the Italian Navy for the design, construction
and logistic support of surface vessels and submarines; moreover, the Company
enjoys excellent relations with other Italian Authorities.
Fincantieri’s products are well-proven with high operating standards yet the
Company has managed to contain costs by availing itself of tried and tested
design and construction solutions drawn from the merchant sector.
Fincantieri relates to customers as Warship Design Authority and Prime
Contractor. Orizzonte Sistemi Navali was set up by Fincantieri (51%) and
Finmeccanica (49%) in 2002, prompted by the wish to provide customers with
one single interlocutor able to supply “turnkey” , high-tech surface vessels.
Orizzonte Sistemi Navali is a Whole Warship Design Authority, responsible for
defining the Platform and Combat System, integrating them physically and
functionally, as well as for the performance of the complete Ship System.

La società Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, costituita da Fincantieri (51%) e Finmeccanica

unico, in grado di fornire unità navali di superficie ad elevato contenuto tecnologico “chiavi in mano”.
Orizzonte Sistemi Navali si qualifica come Whole Warship Design Authority,

In the naval field Fincantieri provides its customers with dedicated facilities - a
design centre in Genoa and a flexible, integrated production system at the two
Italian shipyards of Muggiano and Riva Trigoso.
The Group, thanks to its subsidiary Fincantieri Marine Group, consolidates its
strategy in order to internationalize its naval business – especially in the Marinette
shipyard – thus entering the main world defence market, the American one.
Fincantieri works in cooperation with other leading companies in the defence
sector within the context of supranational programmes. The most recent
partnerships include a cooperation with the German Submarine Consortium
for the construction of submarines for the German and Italian Navies, with the
French company DCNS in the Horizon programmes and FREMM, with Lockheed
Martin’s team (minority partner of Fincantieri Marine Group) on the Littoral
Combat Ships program for the US Navy.
Within the FREMM program, the first units to be delivered are the Carlo Bergamini
and the Virgilio Fasan frigates.
In 2012 Fincantieri, by means of Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), a US
Fincantieri company, announced it has been awarded a contract by the US Coast
Guard for the construction of 40 boats.
In campo militare Fincantieri mette a disposizione dei suoi clienti una struttura
dedicata costituita da un centro di progettazione a Genova ed un sistema produttivo flessibile ed integrato costituito, in Italia, dai due cantieri di Muggiano e
Riva Trigoso. Con la controllata Fincantieri Marine Group, l’Azienda consolida la
propria strategia di internazionalizzazione del business militare - segnatamente
nel cantiere di Marinette - entrando nel principale mercato mondiale della difesa,
quello americano.
Fincantieri è partner di alcune tra le principali aziende del settore difesa nell’ambito di programmi sovranazionali. Tra le cooperazioni più recenti quella con il
German Submarine Consortium per la realizzazione di sommergibili per le Marine tedesca ed italiana, con la società francese DCNS nei programmi Orizzonte e
FREMM, con il team della Lockheed Martin Corp, socio di minoranza di Fincantieri Marine Group, nell’ambito del programma Littoral Combat Ships per la US

propulsion and power generation, for stabilization and positioning by
developing the systems engineering which guarantees fully integrated
components.
The Business Unit also builds products for land application, especially

turbines of up to 35,000 kW.

internationally acknowledged designers and the complete understanding
of the customers requests, Fincantieri Yachts creates dream yachts with
highly refined design solutions, a great attention to details and carefully
crafted precious materials.
The Serene, delivered by Fincantieri in 2011, is the amazing testimonial of
this excellence. Developed on an Espen Oeino concept, she is the first
mega yacht built by Fincantieri Yachts, one of the ten biggest and most advanced in the world in terms of technology, innovation and elegance, winner of the World Superyacht Awards 2012 in the 3,000GT and above class.
Likewise amazing is expected to be the Victory, wonderful 140 metres
mega yacht under construction at the Muggiano shipyard.
