Pau, l’emozione del circuito cittadino
«È stata una sensazione incredibile»: questo il primo commento di Andrea Roda dopo
il gran premio di Pau, tappa del campionato inglese a cui hanno preso parte anche le
Euro Series. Chiude con un diciannovesimo posto in gara 1 mentre non arriva al
traguardo in gara 2. La vera sfida è stata affrontare per la prima volta in carriera un
circuito cittadino: «Quando entri in pista, attorno vedi solo muri e guard rail –
racconta – è emozionante, strano. E allo stesso tempo molto difficile: gli spazi sono
ridotti, non ci sono margini di errore, appena sbagli c’è il muro ad aspettarti».
La pista, questa sconosciuta
L’obiettivo è quello di accumulare più esperienza possibile: già nelle prove libere
Andrea gira molto, cerca di prendere confidenza con il circuito, che per lui è nuovo e
impervio. «La filosofia con cui sono sceso in pista era quella di non fare errori,
partendo cauto e cercando di spingere sempre di più – spiega – Quando provi un
circuito per la prima volta devi capire dove mettere le ruote, devi studiare le
traiettorie, ed è un processo non breve». Così, Andrea non perde tempo e sfrutta il
turno fino all’ultimo secondo.
Le qualifiche
Quindi, arriva il momento delle qualifiche. «Eravamo più macchine del solito, quindi
ognuno aveva poco tempo per girare». I giri a disposizione sono 7. Andrea entra in
pista agguerrito, ma non riesce a dare il massimo. Chiude con il ventesimo tempo.
«Appena sono sceso dalla macchina mi sono reso conto che avrei potuto fare meglio.
La pista ormai era gommata, il grip era migliore e avrei potuto spingere di più». Il
risultato non ripaga gli sforzi ma le sensazioni, dunque, sono positive.
Le gare
Dalla griglia, in gara 1, Andrea parte insomma con voglia di migliorare. Non si tira in
dietro quando c’è da fare bagarre e recupera fino alla sedicesima posizione. Poi,
l’errore. «In una curva veloce a destra sono andato leggermente fuori traiettoria e
sono finito sullo sporco – spiega – Questo tipo di pista non perdona: ho perso il
controllo della macchina, mi sono appoggiato al guard rail e ho rotto un cerchione».
Andrea è costretto a tornare ai box per riparare al danno. Poi rientra in pista, riprende
la gara e chiude diciannovesimo. Se le emozioni in gara 1 non mancano, in gara 2
purtroppo finiscono subito: a due giri dallo start Andrea esce di pista. «Ho preso
troppo un cordolo che mi ha fatto saltare – continua – Ho capito subito che non c’era
nulla da fare, la mia gara è terminata lì. È una pista che non perdona».

Gli obiettivi
La consapevolezza, ora, è che c’è tanto da lavorare, perché «niente è facile e c’è
bisogno di esperienza». Soprattutto in circuiti selettivi come questo: e a fine giugno ci
sarà modo di rifarsi, perché il calendario prevede un altro circuito cittadino, quello di
Norimberga. Prima però è tempo di pensare alla prossima tappa, quella di Brands
Hatch, in Inghilterra. Quel che Andrea Roda assicura è che gli obiettivi sono chiari:
«Non perdere la concentrazione, lavorare e migliorare passo dopo passo. E togliersi
delle soddisfazioni prima della fine della stagione».

Pau, the emotion of the town circuit
“It was an incredible sensation”: this the first comment of Andrea Roda after the
prize of Pau, one step of the English Champion in which also the Euro Series took
place. He closes with a nineteenth position in race 1, while he doesn’t arrive to the
finishing line in race 2. The actual challenge was to face for the first time a town
circuit: “when you enter the track, you see only walls and guard rails all around you –
he says – it’s exciting, strange. And at the same time very difficult: the spaces are
reduced, there are no margins of mistake, as soon as you do a mistake, there is the
wall waiting for you”.
The track, this unknown thing.
The aim is to store up more experience as possible: already in the free tests Andrea
runs a lot; he tries to take confidence with the circuit, which is for him new and
impracticable. “The philosophy I entered the track with is not to do mistakes, starting
cautious and try to pump always more – he explains – When you try a circuit for the
first time, you have to understand where to set the wheels, you have to study the
paths, and it is not a short process”. In this way, Andrea doesn’t loose time and he
exploits his turn until the last second.
The qualifications
Than comes the qualifications’ time. “We ere more cars than usual, therefore each one
had less time to run”. The rounds at disposal are 7. Andrea enters aggressive, but he
doesn’t succeed to do his best. He closes with the twentieth time. “As soon as I left
the car, I realized I could have done better. The track at the end was “tyred”, the grip
was better and I could have pushed more” The result doesn’t reward the efforts but
the sensations are, after all, positive.
The races.
From the starting grid, in race 1, Andrea starts with will to improve. He doesn’t give
up if there is brawl to do; he recovers until the sixteenth position. Than, the mistake.
“In one speedy turn on the right, I went slightly outside the path and I finished in the
dirty – he explains – this kind of track doesn’t forgive: I’ve lost the control of the car,
I lent on the guardrail and I broke one rim”. Andrea is forced to come back to the box
to repair the damage. Than he returns back to the track, he continues the race and he
closes as nineteenth. If the emotions in race 1 don’t miss, in race 2 unfortunately the
end immediately: after 2 rounds from the start he goes out from the track. “I’ve taken
one girder that made me jump – he continues – I’ve immediately understood it was
nothing to do, my race ended there. It’s a race which doesn’t forgive”

The aims
The awareness, now, is that there is a lot of work to do, because “nothing is simple
and we need experience”. Above all in selective circuits like this one: at the end of
June we will have the chance to regain, because the calendar foresees another town
circuit, that one of Nűrnberg. Before that, it’s time anyway to think about the next
step, that one of Brands Hatch, in England. What Andrea Roda ensures is that the
aims are clear: “not to loose the concentration, work and improve step by step. And
take some satisfactions before the season’s end”
