4th International Vocal Competition “Marcello Giordani”

- RULES AND REGULATIONS The Marcello Giordani Foundation, in collaboration with the Fondazione Festival Euro
Mediterraneo presents its 4th International Vocal Competition “Marcello Giordani”
to be held in the Teatro Greco of Taormina, Italy. The purpose of the Marcello Giordani
Foundation is to provide young singers with the means and the opportunity to achieve
their musical aspirations. To this end, the MGF has planned two competitions, one in
the United States and one in Europe. This year, the US competition was held in Vero
Beach, Florida in March 2014, and the European edition will take place on September 6
to 10, 2014 in Taormina.
- GENERAL CONDITIONS Art. 1
The Competition is open to singers of all nationalities between the ages of 18 and 38.
Selection and admission to the Competition is based on a Committee’s evaluation of the
application form submitted by the applicant, which includes audio and video materials
(mp3 file or You Tube links). A maximum of 130 contestants will be admitted.
There is no registration fee.
Art. 2
The application protocol requires the submission of 5 opera arias to be performed in the
original language, three of which must be in Italian.
Art. 2/b
At least 2 of the submitted arias must be selected from the list published in Art. 14 of
this document. Once submitted, the program may not be modified for any reason.
Art. 3
All phases of the Competition (eliminatory, semifinal and final) will be held in Taormina.
The Final Selection will take place on September 10 in the famous Teatro Greco of
Taormina. The finalists will be accompanied by the Orchestra Sinfonica Belliniana.
- REGISTRATION SUBMITION AND PRESELECTION Art. 4
The online registration form must be completed directly on the Marcello Giordani
Foundation website and submitted no later thanwh Wednesday, August 20, 2014.
The completed registration form must include the following attachments:
- copy of ID card or passport
- curriculum (maximum one page)
- two photos
- audio or video of two opera arias in the original language (or you tube links)
Art. 5
Following the evaluation by the Competition Commission of the registration form and
the required attachments, those candidates considered eligible, to a maximum of 130,
will be notified by e-mail of their admission to the competition.
- COMPETITION PHASES Art. 6
The Competition consists of three rounds:
PRELIMINARY ROUND – September 6, 7, 8, 2014 10:30am
Performance of a piece chosen by the contestant among those submitted. The
Jury may request the performance of a second piece. The Jury may interrupt the
performance of a piece at any time and for any reason it deems appropriate.
SEMIFINAL – September 9, 2014 10:30am
Performance of a piece chosen by the Jury among those submitted by the
contestant. The Jury may request the performance of a second piece. The Jury
may interrupt the performance at any time and for any reason it deems
appropriate.
REHEARSAL WITH ORCHESTRA – September 9, 2014 (time to be
announced)
FINALS IN CONCERT – September 10, 2014 09:00pm
Performance of one or two pieces indisputably chosen by the Jury among those
submitted by the contestant (art. 2/b & art. 14)
- THE PRIZES Art. 7
The following prizes will be awarded in accordance with the final and indisputable
decision of the Jury:
First Prize - 5,000 euro in memory of Michele Guagliardo, father of tenor Marcello
Giordani)
Second Prize - 3,000 euro offered by the Vero Beach Opera and the Deborah Voigt
Foundation
Third Prize - 2,000 euro offered by the Marcello Giordani Foundation (MGF)
Some of the Finalists will be selected to perform in the next opera season of the Festival
Euro Mediterraneo.
Additional prizes (concerts, engagements etc.) will be announced on the website of the
Marcello Giordani Foundation.
- THE JURY Art. 8
The Jury, presided over by tenor Marcello Giordani, may include personalities of the
international opera world (artistic directors, conductors, international agents). Members
of the Jury who have family ties or working relationships with any of the contestants,
cannot participate in the voting and must declare it before the start of the competition.
A list of the members of the Jury will be published on the “Competition” page of the
MGF website.

Art. 9
The vote will be by secret ballot as per internal regulations. The Jury’s judgment is final
and indisputable. The Jury may decide not to award some of the prizes if it determines
that there are no deserving contestants.
Art. 10
Members of the Jury who have been in a teacher-student relationship with a contestant
within the last two years must declare this before the beginning of the Competition and
must refrain from voting with regard to that contestant. This will be specifically
mentioned in the minutes of the Competion.
- GENERAL REGULATIONS –
Art. 11
All contestants must bring legible scores of the submitted pieces for piano and voice.
The order in which the contestants will perform will be established by the draw of a letter
of the alphabet before the preliminaries. The contestants who are not present at the
preliminary round will be eliminated unless their absence is approved in advance by the
Competition’s Secretary. The names of the contestants admitted to the semifinals will
be posted at the end of the three preliminary rounds. The preliminaries, semi-finals and
finals in concert will be open to the public and the media. Piano accompanists will be
provided at no charge to the contestant; however, if desired, contestants may provide
an accompanist of their own choosing at their own expense.
Art. 12
Any recording and/or video and/or audio broadcast of the various phases of the
Competition, including the Final Concert, does not give the contestants any right to
compensation. The contestants will be required to sign a release that waives any rights
to recorded material that is published for promotional purposes.
Art. 13
The organization reserves the right to make any modifications to the Rules and
Regulations that are deemed necessary. The signature of the applicants on the
registration form indicates acceptance of the provisions set forth in the Rules and
Regulatione of the Competion, as well as authorization to use the contestant’s personal
data for communication ad selection purposes.
