UN INNO PER LA VENUTA DEL RE DEI RE SCRITTO DA UN GRANDE
CONVERTITO, MATTHEW BRIDGES
«Crown Him With Many Crowns» è un inno natalizio popolare in Canada.
Qui è eseguito dalla piccola orchestra di una high school della British
Columbia (Canada), la Fountainview Academy, affiliata alla Chiesa
avventista del Settimo Giorno.
L’autore di questo inno fu appunto fu Matthew Bridges, nato nell’Essex, in
Inghilterra, nel 1800. Anglicano e fiero anti-papista, iniziò la sua carriera
letteraria pubblicando un poema, Gerusalemme riconquisata, nel 1825.
Seguì un altro libro, L’impero romano sotto Costantino il Grande, nel 1828,
che aveva lo scopo di «esaminare la vera origine delle superstizioni
papali». Ma dopo l’incontro con il movimento di Oxford e la sua figura più
carismatica, John Henry Newman, Bridges si convertì al cattolicesimo e
spese il resto della sua vita in Canada, morendo in Quebec nel 1894.
