About add editore
add editore is an independent publishing house with over 100 titles in its catalogue and
which was set up in Turin in 2010.
In 2014 add has changed ownership. Now Francesca Mancini and Paolo Benini run the
publishing house.
The focus of the editorial plan is on social non-fiction, biographies and pamphlets.
The essays deal with freedom, rights, education, development, environment, frontiers,
prisons and politics, but also topics such as sport, adventure and fashion. They convey the
voices of men and women from various world cultures.
The “exclamation marks” are controversial pamphlets which say their piece forcefully, but
which also provide much food for thought: Time for Outrage! by Stéphane Hessel was one
of the publishing successes of recent years.
The biographies provide stories of people who have made excellence their byword. Lives,
in their extraordinary simplicity.
The selection of titles under preparation opens up to new inspirations and directions, with
a look at Asian cultures, scientific dissemination, literary essays which blend knowledge and
disciplines in a vision that is open to the increasingly clear demand for multiculturalism and
dialogue.
We have published works by farmer and philosopher Pierre Rabhi, entrepreneur and witness to justice Pino Masciari and juvenile prison teacher Mario Tagliani; we have recounted
the story of Alberto Manzi, the teacher who after the Second World War taught Italian to
Italians via TV, and the stories of Pavel Nedved and Ettore Messina. We have described the
life of Shaul Ladany, from Bergen-Belsen to Munich ’72, told the story of the La Plata rugby
team that was practically wiped out by the Argentinian dictatorship in ’78, discovered US
humorist Will Cuppy and learned about Lilian Thuram’s black stars.

The mafia is us is a journey from north to south within the confusion of the fight against the mafia, through the opportunities
lost by the State and civil society. But it also tells the stories of
those who fight in the front line in the place where they live,
starting out from the problems that nobody cares about, the
injustices that others pretend not to see. Paying, sometimes,
with their lives.
The mafia is us, when we do not ask ourselves “What I can
do?” in the place where we are, in the time that we live in, in
the degradation of our cities, in our neighbourhood, in our own
apartment block. It is us when with our Facebook likes we feel we are on the side of the righteous, in a battle that we are not fighting. It is us in front of the TV, powerless viewers of dramas
full of rhetoric. It is us, unwitting instruments of money laundering when we eat out in restaurants, dance in clubs and shop in stores purchased by white-collar crime clans. It is us who do
not understand that crime is not an abstract category. It is the businessman who accepts dirty
money and puts it back into the clean economy. It is the municipal official who turns a blind eye
and signs deeds that he should not sign. It is the student who buys a few grams of marijuana
for an evening with friends. It is the woman who calls the powerful of the neighbourhood to get
back her car that has just been stolen. It is the priest who does not look outside of the church.
The stories told in this book say that the shared commitment of citizens who believe in a project
of redemption is stronger than fear and intimidation. It is more authentic than the slogans in
demonstrations, behind banners with the faces of anti-mafia heroes. Who died for having fought
their battles in their reality, in their time.
Sandro De Riccardis, a journalist with the “La Repubblica” newspaper, covers crime news, law
reports and inquiries; he has followed the main scandals relating to political corruption and
organised crime in recent years.

Claudio Fava’s reflections give life to a book denouncing the
situation in which some Italian journalists have to work, not only
in the south of Italy. It is the portrait of a country and not just a
job. It describes a system of powers that continue to consider as
a nuisance every free voice, every upright reporter, every story
that does not succumb to flattery or falsehood. They are little
known journalists, shy, generous, determined. A silent and tenacious community of young reporters who have collected the
most authentic, and certainly the most precious, legacy of the
eleven journalists killed by the mafia and terrorism in Italy.

mafia and information, I thought it would be the instrument to focus on the sad and hazy things
of those years: on those directors, editors, correspondents who have chosen to remain silent; on
young reporters sent to the front line without even a contract in their pocket. Writing about those
who write about the mafia is also this, a trip to a foreign land among strangers, the unauthorised,

The book refers to facts collected in the Report on the state of information and the condition of
journalists threatened by the mafia, the result of the first parliamentary inquiry (2014-2016) that
the Anti-Mafia Commission has devoted to the relationship between the mafia and information
during its 50 years of operations.
Claudio Fava is a journalist, writer and politician. He has reported for newspapers and television
on many places and many wars, from Sicily fighting against Cosa Nostra to the difficult peace
processes in Latin America. With add editore he published Mar del Plata, now in its sixth edition,
which has been has been turned into a stage show. In May 2009, the Economist voted him MEP
of the year for his work as rapporteur in the European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry into the
“extraordinary renditions” of the CIA in the fight against international terrorism. Since 2013 he has
been the Vice President of the parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission.

Tito Faraci is a comic-strip writer and writer. He has written stories for Topolino, Dylan Dog,
Martin Mystère, Zagor, Alberto Lupo, Tex, Diabolik and Nick Raider, as well as for Spider-Man,
Daredevil and Captain America. He has written novels for children, and has published Topolino
Noir for Einaudi (2000) and the novel La Vita in generale for Feltrinelli (2015).
He has won numerous awards, including for Best Scriptwriter at Lucca Comics in 2004.

As if it were a pilgrimage, Punk is a feeling is the chronicle
of an imaginary journey through places, objects, books and
artists who have influenced the art of Patti Smith. From Arthur
Rimbaud and Frida Kahlo to William Burroughs, Jim Carroll and
Federico García Lorca, via beat poets, artists and various punk
humanity, the journey’s final destination is the works and lives
of figures discovered through records, books and interviews
with Patti Smith. The result is an imaginary but real constellation of shared loves that have contributed to the sentimental education of several generations.
Thus Patti Smith on the phone, one January morning: “There are big stars and planets, but also
small stars. All of them exist, and they are no less real than the earth. They seem unreachable
but that does not mean they are not real.”
The book stems from a passion for Patti Smith that became research into the origins, the loves,
the public and private emotions of a poet of rock and punk who has not only made her mark on
contemporary music, but has also been one of the most innovative poetic voices of recent years.

Tiziana Lo Porto was born in Bolzano in 1972 and has lived in Algiers and Palermo. She divides
her time between Rome and America, where she translates and writes about books, music, films
and comics for the La Repubblica newspaper, the D periodicals of La Repubblica delle donne
and Il venerdì. She has translated, among others, Charles Bukowski, Jim Carroll, James Franco,
Kim Gordon, Lena Dunham and Patti Smith. Together with Daniel Marotta, she is the author of
the graphic novel Superzelda. The graphic life of Zelda Fitzgerald (Superzelda. La vita disegnata
di Zelda Fitzgerald). (Minimum Fax, 2011), translated and also published in Spain, South America,
United States, Canada and France.

Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie’s most famous creation, is a fictional
character and the title of the 1972 concept album, the ultimate in
glam rock, a genre that mixed music and performance.
In the years of the moon landing, the music of Space Oddity

the idea of being able to escape to other dimensions was a

Igiaba Scego (1974) is a writer and journalist of Somali origin. Specialising in education and postcolonial issues, she is the author of short stories and novels. Her memoir La mia casa è dove sono
(My home is where I am) (Rizzoli) won the Mondello Prize in 2011. In collaboration with photographer Rino Bianchi, she published the essay Roma Negata. Percorsi postcoloniali nella città (Rome
Denied. Postcolonial paths in the city) (2014, Ediesse). Her latest novel is Adua (2015, Giunti). She
contributes to the Internazionale magazine.

Susanna Tartaro’s book is a journey in twelve stages through
the world of haiku and its wandering authors; Santōka above

Susanna Tartaro - who works at Radio3 and has for a number of years been producing Fahrenheit, the long-running programme of “books and ideas” - recounts her passion for the Japanese
poetry made up of 5-7-5 syllables, which miraculously contains wisdom and gentleness, knowledge and imagination.
Haiku is an art form that has distant origins and in her book Susanna Tartaro retraces the route,

There is no other song in the world that can arouse such enthusiasm in the streets, choruses, euphoria, as Bella ciao, but at
the same time there is no other song that can provoke as much
debate and divide minds. Those notes and lyrics that we all
know hide an energy that is unmatched in popular music. But
where does this song come from, what is the origin of the lyrics
and the melody we have heard in dozens of different versions?
The origins of the story are unclear because it brings with it
hundreds of clues and suggestions alluding to Breton melodies,
Provencal troubadours, Italian rice pickers, folk songs of love
betrayed, protest songs, children’s rhymes... Snippets of this engaging melody crop up in immigrant neighbourhoods in New York and are taken up by French bistro chansonniers, but its bestknown hangout is the Resistance. But the story does not stop there, because it is since the 60’s
that Bella ciao has become the universal song we know today, reaching even as far as the streets
of Hong Kong, Istanbul and Paris, and finding a new voice every day.
Musician and musicologist Carlo Pestelli reconstructs the song’s journey, narrates the places
through which it has passed, the origin of the music and the lyrics right down to its most famous
and unexpected performances. A journey made up of musicians and fighters, poets and dreamers, a story lived in streets which come to life at the first, unmistakable words:
“Una mattina, mi son svegliato, oh bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao”…
Carlo Pestelli has a PhD in the history of language. He teaches general linguistics at the Institute for translators and interpreters in Turin. A musician and singer-songwriter, he has three
albums and a number of theatre productions under his belt.

What has become of Syria, its revolution and the Syrian people?
After the huge success of La felicità araba, Shady Hamadi is back

people that wants emancipation from dictatorship and fundamentalism, under the West’s disinterested gaze (or perhaps it is too interested and therefore silent).
Shady Hamadi was born in Milan in 1988 from an Italian mother and a Syrian father. Until 1997 he
was banned from entering Syria following the exile of his father Mohamed, a member of the Arab
Nationalist Movement. With the outbreak of the Syrian uprising against the Bashar al-Assad regime
in March 2011, Hamadi became a human rights activist and an important reference point for the
Syrian cause in Italy. He is a contributor to “Il Fatto Quotidiano” where he has a blog.

The daily collaboration between different professionals (educators and professionals in visual

Lo farei con una persona che conosco se questa persona ci starebbe.
Farei il dirottamento così: andrei all’Aeroporto di Caselle, farei finta che dovrei partire, farei
la coda come tutti, arriverei in aereo, aspetterei che l’aereo partirebbe e appena partirebbe
tirerei il mitra fuori, col passamontagna o senza e direi: - Questo è un dirottamento!! Prenderei gli ostaggi e andrei a Volpiano a portare tutti gli ostaggi, magari solo i mariti.
Una volta arrivati a Volpiano chiederei il riscatto alle famiglie e al pilota.
Speriamo che il mio complice sia d’accordo, che una volta siamo andati a prendere il gelato
assieme, io, lui, mia mamma e la sua badante e ha pagato la badante.

“When I started my business in biomedical data analysis, I
was fully convinced that Science was able to autocorrect itself – and researchers as a community were motivated into
telling the truth. In Science, every researchers build upon
trusted results obtained by others; which was exactly what
I wanted to do, crossing data from different sources and
finding new potential answers to scientific problems using
the power of informatics to get it quick and easy.
It then came as a shock to me, when with my group and
armed with the proper technology, we discovered that, far
from being an exception, the three cardinal sins of scientific fraud – data and experiment fabrication, falsification and plagiarism – are largely diffuse in the current scientific record, at such
a rate that scientific fraud is becoming a serious issue. I started writing to scientific journals, to
uncover potential frauds, ending up into involving the police for investigating some serious case.
While fraud in science is not a new thing nor unexpected, the scale at which today is occurring is
previously unseen. That is why several brave scientists scattered in different countries decided
to risk their professional lives and act in several ways – from uncovering frauds, to testifying in
public prosecution cases, up to attempting to change national and international regulations.
I think that all of us should know what is going on – what are we risking, who are the fraudsters,
what we can do and what responsibility every single citizen has in knowing what Science really
is – and what is not.”
Enrico Bucci, born in 1972, graduated in Biology in 1997. In 2001 he became a researcher at the
Institute of Biostructure and Bioimaging of the CNR (Naples). In 2006 he founded Bionucleon
Srl, a specialised company which won the “Best Young and Innovative Italian Company” award. In
2008 he set up Biodigitalvalley, a company dedicated to the large-scale analysis of the biomedical data published all over the world.

Year after year, constant appeals and complaints are heard from
health services, psychologists, educators and parents’ associations on what is one of the most dangerous social problems of
our times: the senseless and excessive consumption of alcohol
by minors and young people.
Binge drinking concerns 15% of under 18’s, both males and
females, who mix colourful cocktails with very poor quality and
low-priced spirits, aided and abetted by irresponsible marketing
strategies on which many a company has made its fortune. We
know the damage that alcohol causes in the body and that the
brain is the most affected organ, along with the liver, particularly
in light of the fact that the alcohol metabolism mechanism is not yet fully developed at 18-20 years
of age. But how are we to talk to adolescents? The experts interviewed stressed that it is often
enough just to know how to listen and to be the adult that young people expect, with rules and
support and leading by example. And leaving aside independence, saying no to prohibitions or
threats of any kind, but providing a solid education: it was the teens interviewed themselves that
highlighted the essentially social nature of alcohol consumption, and that the most effective limits
to abuse are also social. Alessandra Di Pietro, with a journalist’s rigour and a parent’s heart, investigates the phenomenon of alcohol consumption among minors through the stories of those directly

Lucio Caracciolo: “What is the European Union today? Today, just like yesterday, it is what
the member states have decided it is. [...] A great geopolitical compromise between sovereign entities. Which over the decades have given away, under contract, increasing amounts
of sovereignty to EU institutions, and which are now trying to get some of this back via
short, political routes. [...]
This is the European Union, or if you prefer, the Europe that we have. When we go on to
talk about what we would like, or what we imagine it will be, we have to make a leap of logic.
[...] The Europe I dream of is a confederal State and thus with varying degrees of sovereignty. This European Confederation will be an active power on a global scale. And it will be part
of a much larger and looser European Union, extended to the south-east, towards Turkey
and North Africa, which I would then call the Euro-Mediterranean Union. How can this
dream be achieved? Certainly not starting from the EU institutions, because they do not
have the legitimacy or the authority to do so. Any proposal for the Europe of the future can
only start from national authorities, the only ones that are entitled to obtain the consent of
the citizens.”
Enrico Letta: “It is precisely when faced with Europe’s obvious crisis that the Euro may give
rise to a political Europe, because we are now realising that this step is essential and inevitable. [...] The Euro has been a success, beyond all expectations, primarily for the ability to
integrate and unify that it has had. Over the years it has worked in the countries that have
adopted it and it has made headway. [...] The Euro’s global role is a feature of this diversified world. [...] Even technically, it has worked.”
Enrico Letta (Pisa, 1966) was Minister for EU Affairs and of Industry. He was Prime Minister
from 28 April 2013 to 22 February 2014. Since April 2014 he has been a professor at Sciences-Po in Paris (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris). In April 2015 he founded the Scuola di
Politiche (School of Politics) named after Beniamino Andreatta. Since September 2015 he has
been Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at the Sciences-Po University in Paris.
Lucio Caracciolo (Rome, 1954), is the founder and director of “Limes. Italian geopolitical magazine”. Professor of Political and Economic Geography at the University of Roma Tre, at the
LUISS Guido Carli in Rome, and at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.

Alberto Manzi (1924 - 1997) was an Italian teacher, educator, TV personality and writer, known
mainly for having conducted Non è mai troppo tardi (It’s never too late), a television programme
broadcast by RAI between 1960 and 1968; thanks to these distance-learning lessons, almost
one and a half million people managed to achieve primary level education. The project was
a huge international success (it was imitated by seventy-two countries) and earned him numerous awards, including the UNESCO Prize in 1965. At the invitation of the Argentine government,
Alberto Manzi held a course of 60 lessons in the ‘80s at the Ministry of Justice and Education in
Buenos Aires on the use of radio and television for literacy. In 1989 the programme earned Argentina UNESCO recognition for the best solution adopted for literacy in all of South America. He wrote
several children’s books: the most famous is Orzowei, published in 1955, which was the basis for the
Italo-German children’s television series of the same name in the ‘70s.
Giulia Manzi was born in 1988. She studied publishing and writing at Rome’s Sapienza University.
The book was written with the collaboration of Alessandra Falconi, from the Alberto Manzi Centre,
and Federico Taddia, writer and radio and TV presenter.

Black September, a group of Palestinian terrorists, break into

from Bikila to All Blacks, from Nixon to Thatcher: they are all a part of Ladany’s walk. Andrea

name was synonymous with good-thief and he looked
like a character of a novel

Between 1884 and 1959, Brazil took in millions of Europeans.
One of them was Gino Amleto Meneghetti, who arrived from
Pisa already with a thriving career as a professional thief. In
over half a century of thefts, arrests and escapes, he was to become Brazil’s most famous criminal. After disembarking in 1913,
he was already serving his first sentence the following year.
Blow after blow, Meneghetti became public enemy number 1
for the police of Sao Paulo, with 200 policemen being mobilised in order to arrest him. A sensational operation which led
to his heaviest sentence - 43 years in prison – for the death of commissioner Waldemar Doria,
hit by a bullet which Meneghetti always denied having fired.
After eighteen years in prison, Gino was released after he was given a pardon in 1944, only to
find a completely different world and a Sao Paulo that had become a metropolis. What was a
seventy-year-old man who had spent the greater part of his life in prison to do? He tried to get
by, but his freedom lasted a mere 60 days. According to public opinion, he was a celebrity, half
way between Robin Hood and Arsenio Lupin. Incorrigible, at the time of his last arrest Gino was
over 90. He died in 1976, shortly before he was to turn 98. Meneghetti was an exceptional character, who seems to have stepped out of a novel, an anti-hero who was loved by the poor.

XVI is dedicated to the figure of Jesus of Nazareth and has given rise to a heated debate among historians, theologians and

Joseph Ratzinger’s thesis, exposing its insubstantiality.
