Dida finta dida finta dida ITA A monument to perception James Turrel Laurea was awarded an honorary degree in architecture by the IUAV University of Venice last October, which provided the opportunity for presenting the most important and as yet unfinished work by this artist: the Roden Crater. The reasons behind the degree lie in the fundamental role that the artist has played, from the ’70s to the present day, in redefining the way light is used in original spatial contexts designed by himself and the greatest contemporary architects. The degree award ceremony coincided with the inauguration of the exhibition “Geometries of light – The Roden Crater Project by James Turrell” organised by Agostino de Rosa & Imago Rerum Team, with Turrell himself giving a lecture on “Music of the Spheres in Light”, with which the artist told the story of the Roden Crater project. The summary of years of work with both natural and artificial light, this project was conceived to transform the cinder cone of the Roden Crater into a work of art. Through light itself, it manages to establish both a terrestrial and astronomical dialogue with the natural environment surrounding the site. The Roden Crater, an extinct volcano that appeared around 300,000 years ago, rises up to a height of around 150 metres above the Painted Desert (Arizona - USA), on the margins of the Navajo and Hopi Indian reserve. Here, James Turrell has availed of the help of a highly qualified group of architects, engineers and astronomers to bring to life a project in the desert (figure 1 – Roden Crater), which is unique in terms of its light, colour and insulation. The project involves inserting a complex of galleries, opening and underground rooms into this setting (figure 2 – Floor plan of the Roden Crater). The aim of the work is to make it possible to enjoy the psychosensorial perceptions that can be associated with natural light, whether by day or night, and the apparent or real movement of the stars. Light, which is the expressive instrument and medium underpinning the project, penetrates within the surface of the crater through deliberately orientated openings and galleries that are almost invisible from the outside (figure 3 Alpha space – external covering; figure 4 – East Eye). The underground rooms will serve as light amplifiers and dark rooms, the pools of water open to the sky (figure 5 Eye of the Dida finta dida ING, Dida finta dida. The small groups will ensure visitors will be able to grasp the intimate and individual nature of the perceptions that can be felt inside. James Turrel................................................................. James Turrell was born on 6 May 1943 in Los Angeles, where he obtained a degree in the psychology of perception. In the years that followed he attended courses in mathematics, astronomy, sculpture and history of art, obtaining important qualifications from the very best university institutes in California. From late 1968, together with his colleague Robert Irwin and perception psychologist Edward Wortz, James Turrell conducted experiments on total perception fields (Ganzfeld) and on sensorial deprivation as part of the flare 6 Art and Technology programme. In it he examined the means of human perception in controlled environments or in conditions of altered perception, all of which was to have a considerable influence on his work in later life. From 1967 his work consisted entirely of environmental interventions that tended to draw attention to the change in intensity of light. Between 1974 and 1976 the Californian artist produced a number of installations for Italian collector Giuseppe Panza di Biumo in Varese (still visible), first and foremost amongst which was a skyspace (Skyspace I). The skyspace is a particular type of Structural Cut positioned above the line of the horizon and created through an opening made in the cover of a given setting: in this case it is the sky that virtually puts itself on the same level as the ceiling, creating the illusion that it seals in the space below it. In 1966 and at his own expense, he created the first installation for capturing natural light and sounds from the outside at the Mendoza Hotel in Ocean Park, California; here he was to produce the first Cross Corner Projections using different colour artificial light. In 1973, he abandoned his studio in Ocean Park and began flying over America’s western desert areas in search of a natural site where he could continue his expressive research. After seven months of reconnaissance work, he stumbled across the Roden Crater out in the open: this was to be the place he chose for bringing to life his project, “a monument to perception”. It was a project to which, from then onwards, he was to dedicate all his resources, investing in it all proceeds from his work. And it is here that the artist is currently living, so he can follow work on his masterpiece from up close. All photos by Agostino de Rosa& Imago Rerum Team 7 flare ITA finta dida. The shapes of the rooms that make up the entire project are not determined by aesthetic principles; rather more they are dictated by their main function, namely receiving, directing and conserving light. In this way the observer will be caught up in a set of sensorial experiences linked to the perception of light and its interactions, in real time, with the atmosphere and the terrestrial landscape, not to mention events taking place in sidereal space, clearly visible from various positions in the crater. The work, which is cyclopean in terms of its objectives and conception, not to mention volumes of materials used and overall cost, is scheduled to be completed within the second decade of this century.
