Q
his is the third ESF and we are very happy that the British movement is
able to welcome you from all over Europe and the world to London.
Britain has been a pioneer of neo-liberalism within Europe and partly
for that reason the project of hosting the ESF has won massive support across
all social movements and communities and will fully reflect the diversity of
London, Britain, Europe and the World.
Since we last met in Paris the world has become even less safe. The
continuing conflict and occupation in Iraq, the extension of the Wall in
Palestine, and the danger of further illegal pre-emptive war show just how
unstable the world has become.
Much of the hunger, disease and pain in the world can be rooted back to
Project Neo Liberalism. Our project of building social forums as an alternative
to Neo Liberalism is a significant development in uniting and organising all
those committed to building a just and peaceful world. Yet while our movement

édition du FSE.
La Grande Bretagne a été la pionnière du néo-libéralisme en Europe. C’est
en partie pour cette raison que le projet d’accueillir le FSE a reçu un soutien
aussi fort de la part des mouvements sociaux et des différentes communautés
qui composent notre société. Ce FSE refletèra fidèlement la diversité de Londres,
de la Grande Bretagne mais aussi de l’Europe et du monde entier.
Depuis notre dernière rencontre au FSE de Paris, le monde est devenu
encore moins sûr. Le conflit et l’occupation qui continue en Irak, l’extension du
mur en Palestine, le danger d’autres guerres illégales montrent à quel point le
monde est devenu instable.
La plupart des problemes tels que la faim dans le monde, les maladies
et autres fléaux ont leur origine dans le Projet Néo- Libéral. Notre projet de
construction des forums sociaux comme alternative au néo-libéralisme est un
dévelopement significatif dans l’unification et l’organisation de tous ceux qui

Großbritannien ist ein Pionier des Neo-Liberalismus innerhalb Europas

ESF-Gastgeberrolle große Unterstützung aus allen Sozialbewegungen und
Gemeinschaften gewonnen. Das ESF wird dementsprechend die ganze
Vielfältigkeit von London, Großbritannien, Europa und von der Welt reflektieren.
Seitdem wir das letzte Mal in Paris zusammengekommen sind, ist die
Welt noch unsicherer geworden. Der andauernde Konflikt und die Besetzung
im Irak, die Verlängerung der Mauer in Palästina und die Gefahr von weiteren
ungerechten Präventivkriegen zeigen auf, wie instabil die Welt geworden ist.
Viele Schmerzen der Welt, wie der Hunger und die Krankheiten, sind tief
im Neo-Liberalismus verwurzelt. Unser Projekt des Aufbauens von Sozialforen
als Alternative zum Neo-Liberalismus ist eine bedeutende Entwicklung zum
Vereinigen und Organisieren aller derjenigen, die dem Schaffen einer gerechten

El origen de una gran parte del hambre, la enfermedad y el dolor
mundiales se puede situar en un plan llamado Neoliberalismo. Nuestro
proyecto de construcción de foros sociales como una alternativa al
neoliberalismo es un desarrollo significativo para reunir y organizar a todos
aquellos que quieran comprometerse a construir un mundo justo y pacífico.

There will also be a diverse cultural programme as an integral part of
the Forum, with more than 100 films, music, drama, poetry and exhibitions.
The Forum will finish with a demonstration followed by a rally with
music in Trafalgar Square – the traditional site of the great demonstrations
for peace and social justice for more than 100 years in this country.
We hope that you will enjoy and benefit from this European Social
Forum as much as we did from those in Florence and Paris. Together we
can build a movement strong enough to demonstrate that Another World is
Possible and defeat the enemies of freedom, justice and democracy.

Les débats du Forum Social Européen de cette année seront organisé
autours de six thèmes principaux :
• Guerre et Paix
• Démocratie et droits fondamentaux
• Justice sociale et solidarité : contre la privatisation et la dérégulation, pour
le droits sociaux, les droits des travailleurs et les droits des femmes
• La mondialisation des multinationales et la justice globale
• Contre le racisme, la discrimination et l’extrême droite : pour l’égalité
et la diversité
• Crise environnementale, contre le néo-liberllaism et pour le
développement durable
Le programme culturel sera divers et est partie intégrale du Forum
avec plus que 100 films, des concerts, du théatre, de la poésie et des
expositions.
Le Forum se terminera avec une manifestation, suivie par un
rassemblement avec de la musique à Trafalgar Square- l’endroit traditionnel
des grandes manifestations pour la paix et la justice sociale depuis plus que
100 ans dans ce pays.
Nous espérons que vous apprecierez ce Forum Social Européen autant

Das diesjährige Europäische Sozialforum wird sich mit sechs Themen
auseinandersetzen:

• Demokratie und Grundrechte,
• Sozialgerechtigkeit und Solidarität: gegen Privatisierung (Deregulierung), für
Arbeiter-, Sozial- und Frauenrechte,
• Globalisierung der Firmen und globale Gerechtigkeit,
• Gegen Rassismus, Diskriminierung und Rechtsradikalismus: für
Gleichheit und Verschiedenartigkeit,
• Klimakrise, gegen Neo-Liberalismus und für eine nachhaltige
Gesellschaft.
Als Teil des Forums wird es auch ein vielfältiges Kulturprogramm geben,
das mehr als 100 Filmen, Musik, Drama, Poesie und Ausstellungen verspricht.
Das Forum wird mit einer Demonstration beendet, gefolgt von einer
Kundgebung mit Musik auf dem Trafalgar Square, dem seit mehr als 100
Jahren traditionellen britischen Ort von großen Demonstrationen für Frieden
und Sozialgerechtigkeit.
Wir hoffen, dass ihr dieses Europäische Sozialforum genauso viel
genießen werdet und nützlich findet, wie wir es in Florenz und in Paris taten.
Zusammen können wir eine Bewegung schaffen, die stark genug, um zu
zeigen, dass eine andere Welt möglich ist, und um die Feinde von Freiheit,
Gerechtigkeit und Demokratie zu besiegen.

El objetivo de todos aquellos que están relacionados con el FSE es la
creación de un mundo basado en la justicia social y la democracia. Y en este
contexto, una Europa que privatiza los servicios públicos, que reduce los
derechos de los pensionistas, que acepta el racismo y excluye a los refugiados
políticos e inmigrantes, que explota al sur del planeta, que destruye el
medio ambiente natural y se une con los EEUU para elaborar un proyecto de
Neocolonialismo, no es la Europa que queremos. Así pues, el centro de nuestras

concentración con música en vivo en Trafalgar Square, el sitio en el que
han tenido lugar las grandes manifestaciones por la paz y la justicia social
desde hace más de cien años en este país.

sostenibile.
Ci sara’ anche un vario programma culturale ad integrazizone del
Forum, con piu’ di 100 film, concerti, spettacoli, poesia e mostre.
Il Forum finira’ con una dimostrazione seguita da una
manifestazione e uno spettacolo musicale in Trafalgar Square
– tradizionale sito delle grandi dimostrazioni per la pace e la giustizia
sociale negli ultimi 100 anni di questo paese.
Ci auguriamo che viviate e traiate benefici da questo Forum Sociale
Europeo cosi’ come per noi e’ stato a Firenze ed a Parigi. Insieme
possiamo costruire un movimento forte abbastanza per dimostrare che
un’altro mondo e’ possibile e sconfiggere i nemici della liberta’, giustizia
e democrazia.

The UK ESF Organising Committee
is committed to ensuring that all
ESF events are fully accessible to all
delegates. All preparatory meetings,
plenary sessions, seminars, workshops
and cultural events will be held in
accessible venues with toilet facilities
for disabled people. All seminar
and plenary sessions at the forum
will include induction loop. We
are endeavouring to provide BSL
interpretation in as many sessions as
possible. Information materials will
be available in alternative formats,
including large-print versions.
Le Comité britannique d’Organisation
des FSE s’engage à garantir que toutes

accessibles aux délégués à mobilité

We are the voices you hear in your headphones.
We are the volunteers who translate documents
into languages that you can understand.
We are those, who, like you, make the European
Social Forum a truly international process.
We are Babels, a network of volunteer
interpreters and translators, both professional
and amateur, who participate in events that abide
by the World Social Forum’s Charter of Principles.
Babels came into existence spontaneously to
meet the needs of the European Social Forum
in Florence in November 2002. Babels has since
grown very rapidly and is now made of more than
5000 volunteers who support the social forum
processes by facilitating inter-cultural discussions
and debates.
Our aim is to enable as many people as possible
to participate actively in social forums by
breaking down language barriers, offering
the means to understand one another in a
multilingual environment. We also provide
a space to reflect on the role of languages
in challenging the mechanisms of cultural
domination.

Babels wurde spontan fuer das Europaeische Sozialforum in
Florenz im November 2002 gegruendet. Seitdem ist Babels
schnell gewachsen und besteht heute aus mehr als 5000
Freiwilligen, die den Prozess der Sozialforen unterstuetzen
indem sie interkulturelle Diskussionen und Debatten
ermoeglichen .
Babels surgió de forma espontánea para hacer frente
a las necesidades del Foro Social Europeo de Florencia,
en noviembre de 2002. Desde entonces, Babels ha
crecido muy rápidamente y ahora esta formado por
más de 5000 voluntarios, que apoyan los procesos del
foro social contribuyendo a que los participantes se
entiendan en las discusiones y debates.
Babel e’ nato spontaneamente al Foro Sociale
Europeo di Firenze nel Novembre 2002 per
supplire al bisogno di interpretariato. Da allora,
Babels si e’ espanso rapidamente ed e’ ora
composto da 5000 volontari che appoggiano i fori
sociali, favorendone le discussioni e i dibattici
inter-culturali.
Notre but est de permettre au plus grand nombre de
participer activement aux forums sociaux en surmontant
l’obstacle de la langue, proposant un moyen de se
comprendre les uns les autres dans un environnement
multilingue. Nous sommes également un espace où
réfléchir au rôle de la langue comme moteur de lutte
contre les mécanismes de la domination culturelle.
Unser Ziel ist es Sprachbarrieren zu ueberwinden und
Mittel bereitzustellen, um sich gegenseitig in einer
mehrsprachigen Umgebung zu verstehen. Dadurch
sollen moeglichst viele Menschen aktiv an den Sozialforen
teilnehmen koennen. Des weiteren wollen wir einen Raum
schaffen, in dem darueber nachgedacht werden kann
welche Rolle Sprachen bei der Anfechtung kultureller
Dominanzmechanismen spielen.
Nuestros objetivos consisten en permitir que el número
de participantes se incremente cada vez más, en
derribar las barreras del lenguaje y en ofrecer recursos
lingüísticos para que, en un ambiente multicultural,
todo el mundo se entienda. También proporcionamos
un espacio de reflexión sobre el papel que desempeñan
los idiomas al desafiar los mecanismos de dominación
cultural.

Forum social mondial.Né de manière spontané pour
répondre aux besoins du Forum social européen de
Florence en novembre 2002, Babels a depuis beaucoup
grandi. Le réseau compte aujourd’hui plus de 5 000

sociaux en facilitant la tenue de discussions et de débats
