Pistoletto, Schifano, Sol Lewitt. Paliano deve notorietà anche ai suoi
aspetti naturalistici e paesaggistici.
Having medieval origins, Paliano is set between the Prenestini and
Ernici mountains, the town is tightly linked to the Colonna family,
to whom it belonged as one of their strongholds. The period of
Paliano's major development was the 17th century. The Palazzo
Ducale, originating from this period, was built by the endeavour of
Filippo Colonna with its adjacent Collegiata di S. Andrea, the
family's tomb. Filippo was also responsible for the construction of
PALIANO
Paliano's fortress, which dominates the entire Sacco Valley.
Today, the fortress serves as a maximum-security prison.
Within the fortress are kept a series of notable paintings
(attributed to Pablo De Cespedes), which depict the triumphal
entry into Rome of Marcantonio Colonna after his victory at
the battle of Lepanto (1571). Paliano still retains a belt of
walls, which has three access gates and bastions arranged with
gardens. At Cervinara, the village of the princes of Colonna,
there is now a cultural center, where the "Zerinthya"
foundation of contemporary art is located; it has a permanent
exhibition of works by Pistoletto, Schifano and Sol Lewitt. The
beauty of Paliano's hilly landscape can be admired from its
natural reserve "La Selva", a botanical and ornithological
oasis, whose park is also noted for its numerous artificial lakes
linked by a vast system of open air canals.

MARI A S S DI CAN N E TO FE S T I VAL - AU G . 16 th
With the weather on our side once again, the Festa for the
Madonna di Canneto was a great success! As the procession
left the chapel, blue and white balloons were released to the
sky by folkore children. The Polizia Stradale from Toronto
guarded the statue as six men dressed in red and white
carried her reverently. The Banda Lira from Leamington,
flanked by the Knights of Columbus, played the usual
refrains as the Voci Ciociare sang. Also in procession, were
over twenty various groups proudly carrying their banners
or flags. A small crowd followed the clergy into the already
filled hall of eager pilgrims waiting to catch a glimpse of
the Brown Madonna. The St. Angela Choir began to sing
and the Mass began.
Immediately after the mass, the Madonna was carried
around the track, stopping at the top. More balloons were
released after prayers, blessings and singing took place.
Continuing on to the chapel, Mary was placed at the altar
so that people could come and pray, light a candle or sit and
reflect.
Pilgrims arriving on Saturday
Meanwhile, under the pavilion, traditional food and
beverages were served. Ciambelle and crostolli were hot
items! There were bocce games and soccer games and fun
games for the kids, as well. The entertainment by the
folklore children was very enjoyable as usual, the Banda
Lira from Leamington played some great music, too! There
was the organetto and the Voci Ciociare who sang two songs
and then included the Italian Choir from the Roma Club of
Leamington for three more.
If you've never stayed for the evening Mass, you are missing
out on a spectacle!! Chairs were set up for the mass outdoors
in front of the Chapel. Father Barbiero and Father Licciardi
along with Rocco Maiuri celebrated the Mass. The Voci
Ciociare sang the parts of the Mass with Paul Liva on
keyboard. After the mass, there was a candlelight procession
with the Madonna around the chapel with the crowd
following and singing. She was then placed back on the altar
facing the fireworks display! And what a spectacular display
it was!!!
Procession to the hall
At the finale, the words E VIVA MARIA, were lit!!! And that
is what this day was all about.... our Maria SS di Canneto.........
E VIVA MARIA!!!!!!!
Thank you to all who came out to participate throughout the
day! The volunteers this year worked very hard and are very
deserving of praise for the smooth running of all aspects of
the day! Congratulations to Mark Rossi and his committee
for a great job!!!

PERFECT PAIRINGS BANQUET - JULY 11th
On Saturday, July 11th, 2015 the first annual “Perfect
Pairings” event was held in support of the Ciociaro
Youth, Culture and Sports programs. We had nearly
300 people attend this event and held a silent auction,
TV raffle and ate very well. Ciociaro’s chefs prepared
a meal that was second to none and boasted over 50
different foods and an assortment of desserts and
pastries. These foods were presented with wines from
our local event sponsors, Cooper’s Hawk Vineyards,
Muscedere Vineyards, and Sprucewood Shores Estate
Winery.
The evening’s entertainment was provided by Cal
Cuffaro, who played during our dinner and was
followed by Dreamcatchers who continued the
entertainment for the remainder of the night. A special
thanks to all our auction donors, staff and especially
to Domenic Aversa and Andrea Roma who made the
event something to be remembered with the quality
and quantity of food dishes that were presented. Many
people have already begun asking for tickets to next
year’s event and are anxious to see what we can come
up with next year. Thank you to everyone who
supported this event and to the hard work of my cochair Rocco Muscedere for his hard work and
dedication securing the sponsors and auction items.
See you all next year.

SPORTS
SOCCER AT CIOCIARO 2015
The season has ended for this year and all the boys and girls had loads of fun!
Winning wasn't the important thing and the coaches’ task was to let the kids have
fun. Watching them play soccer, running after that black and white ball, up and
down the green grass, from one end of the field to the other was exercise in itself.
The parents showed their enthusiasm by cheering for their child and team.
In the Under 21 category, the Ciociaro Club Men’s team were the Champions!
Coaches Anthony Liolli and Jason Mastrogiacomo are proudly smiling as they
flank their champion players.
We are so fortunate at the Ciociaro Club to have such well kept soccer fields and
a place to go for refreshments to celebrate a victory or just a well-played game!
U21 Champs
Thank you to all of the participants and to all of the faithful parents for bringing
their children to the practices and games. Our biggest thanks to all the coaches
and refs who made this season possible!
NOSTALGIE CIOCIARE - SEPT. 13th
September 13, this year, was cooler than expected, but a
beautiful, sunny day! The Nostalgie Ciociare is a day to have
fun and re-live the activities of our past.
There were kids' events which were traditional games and
activities such as Giro del Cerchio, Corn Husking and Morra
(to name a few). The children seemed to be having so much
fun!!
Also, the traditional homemade foods like Pizze Fritte and
Polenta were served.
The Youth Folklore danced, the Organetto and Accordion
played together and the Voci Ciociare sang!
Thank you to all who came out to participate in one way or
another. We appreciate all our volunteers !!
See you next year!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT ... SILVIO PUZZUOLI
Many of you may recognize this gentleman just by
his picture. Most of you have danced to his music
at weddings, banquets or even on Friday nights.
He has been an MC for Members' Banquets and
for Miss Ciociaria Pageants (to name a few). He
has even taught some of your children. He is the
Spotlight Interview for this edition of the
CORRIERE CIOCIARO.
Greetings, my name is Silvio Puzzuoli, born in Pozzuoli, a
small area between Casalvieri and Vicalvi and a proud
thirty year member of the Ciociaro Club. I am married to
Josephine and we have three children: Ben, Rob and
Marissa.
Ben and Rob are involved in the field of computers creating
software and various programs here in Windsor. Marissa
lives and teaches French in Toronto.
We are fortunate to have five grandchildren; five girls (one
set of twins) and one boy. The oldest is six, so you can
imagine the confusion, the energy and the fun when the five
get together at our house!!
I am involved in various activities at the Club but I have
never had the inclination to run for any administrative
positon.
I have recently retired from teaching French and Italian
after more than 38 years.
Fifteen years ago, we started adult Italian night classes at
the Club...and these classes still continue today with
different levels of learning.
I have always had an insatiable passion for music and
languages – in fact during the school March break, I
organized 23 student trips visiting Italy, France, Spain,
Greece, Germany and England, to show them the
importance of languages, culture and traditions of other
countries.
This past year we introduced a Grade 10 level Italian course
with credit toward a High School diploma. There were 30
students in the class and we hope to offer it again this
October. Let's encourage the students who took the grade
10 course to follow-up with the grade 11 course which will
also be offered in October!
So, we ask parents and grandparents and relatives to
encourage our youth to register for these courses to ensure
that our fabulous language and the richness of our culture
will be spread to future generations!

abbiamo tre figli: Ben, Rob e Marissa.
creando software e vari programmi qui a Windsor. Marissa,
nostra cultura verranno propagate nelle generazioni future.

KIDS CAMP AT THE CIOCIARO CLUB - AUG. 10-14th
The Kid’s Club Summer camp was held at the Ciociaro Club
from August 10-14th, 2015. During this week our future
members engaged in cultural activities related to their Ciociaro
heritage. Campers learned about life in Italy as experienced by
their ancestors; like carrying La Conca to get water. Campers
also learned how to make famous Italian cuisine from scratch!
They got elbows deep in flour as they made fresh pasta noodles
that they got to taste later at lunch. Campers also spent time
outdoors playing soccer, going for walks around the bike track,
playing bocce, and Scopa. Each day the campers learned Italian
vocabulary related to the activities they were doing, like pizza
toppings and ingredients when they made their very own
personal pizzas. The camp was a huge success and we are excited
for next year!

Marcantonio Colonna
Marcantonio Colonna, nato a Civita
Lavinia, era un membro della famiglia
Colonna del Lazio, allora la piu' potente
feudo titolare degli Stati Pontifici e del
Regno di Sicilia, che era sotto la
dominazione spagnola. I suoi genitori
erano Ascanio Colonna, duca di
Taglicozzo e Giovanna d'Aragona.
Marcantonio II Colonna (sometimes spelled Marc'Antonio; 1535 - August 1,
1584), Duke of Tagliacozzo and Duke and Prince of Paliano, was an Italian
general and admiral.
Marcantonio Colonna, born at Civita Lavinia, was a member of the Colonna
noble family of the Lazio, then one of the most powerful fief holder of the Papal
States and the Kingdom of Sicily, which was under Spanish rule. His parents
were Ascanio Colonna, Duke of Tagliacozzo and Giovanna d'Aragona.
In 1553-1554, during the war against Siena, Colonna was created commander
of the Spanish cavalry. At the Battle of Lepanto (October 7, 1571), his admiral
ship was protagonist of the decisive victory of the Christian League against the
Ottoman fleet. On his return to Rome, Pope Gregory XIII confirmed him
Captain General of the Church.
In 1577 King Philip II named him Viceroy of Sicily. Marcantonio Colonna was
also Lord [Signor] of Marino, then a village some kilometers south of Rome,
where the population honoured him with a great feast which is held yearly still
today, under the name of "Sagra dell'uva".

Torta della Nonna
(Grandma's Cake)
Printed on RECYCLED PAPER - Please Recycle
Filling:
2 cups fresh ricotta
1/2 cup pine nuts
1/2 cup sugar
1 lemon, zested and juiced
3 eggs
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
To make the pastry, make a well in the
flour, and place egg, yolks, sugar, butter
and olive oil mixture in the center and
proceed as you would with fresh pasta,
i.e. bring flour in bit by bit until the
liquid in the well is thick enough to
bring together with your hands. Knead
until the dough is smooth, then allow to
rest 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the filling by mixing
together the ricotta, pine nuts, sugar,
lemon zest, juice and eggs in a bowl
until creamy.
To assemble, roll out the pastry to form
2 (12-inch) circles. Place one circle
down to line the bottom and sides of a
9-inch pan. Spread the ricotta mixture
evenly over this layer. Place the
remaining circle of dough over the top
and pinch together the edges. Place in
the oven to bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
Remove and serve warm or at room
temperature with vin Santo from
Cappezzana.
Buon Appetito!
