PUGLIAmipiaci 49 Immaginare e Creare • Imagining and Creating The whistle “that banishes thoughts” The tradition of whistles in Apulia Colorful, small, big. Just put your lips and blow in the orifice and a powerful and loud sound, or a hiss, or a baritone note, will break the silence. We’re speaking about whistles, so simple yet ancient objects, heritage of a folk tradition tracing back to lots of centuries ago. Originally the whistle is nothing but a decoy, used in many occasions, by shepherds as far as children while playing, but over time it has acquired an exorcizing value intended to wish luck and banish thoughts. The clay whistles which now are exposed as precious objects in the shop windows and on the craftsmen’s stalls are produced according to hand-crafted manufacturing procedures of the classical Rome and the Hellenistic world. A simple procedure, yet a procedure that through the current creativity makes produce multi-shaped handiworks becoming small works of art. All comes out from clay that Apulia region, from Rutigliano as far as Grottaglie, has got in huge quantity. The wet clay is kneaded like a dough and pressed into two plaster molds where the whistle’s shape, chosen by the craftsman, is skillfully carved. Once the clay is well pressed and the ideal humidity level is reached, the craftsman opens the plaster mold so to get just the grayish clay shape. In order to make sure to have created not just a pattern but rather a real whistle, the craftsman uses a wooden stick to check the functioning of the crack through which the air must pass to obtain the whistle’s sound. The shape of clay passes, then, to the baking stage, baking procedure that can take up to four days. When the whistle turns in earthenware and gets cool, it can be painted with bright colors that make it funny and appealing. From objetc to symbol It is not possible to determine when the whistle has become a recreational object rather than a functional tool, when it has been regarded in ritual and symbolic terms of luck, in Rutigliano town symbol of whistles, for example, until some decades ago people used to give whistles on occasion of Saint Antony Abbey Celebration. On 17th January, the celebration day of the Saint Patron and Protector of peasants, boys used to give to their beloved a basket of fruits from the “earth mother” containing a whistle in the shape of a rooster, as a wish of virility and fertility. Even today in Rutigliano all young people know this tradition and some of them keep it alive in a playful and jubilant spirit. Every year Rutigliano also remembers its craftsmen with the “City of Rutigliano” National Competition of the Earthen Whistle, a competition among all the craftsmen and artists who manufacture earthen products in Italy. The town of Rutigliano has also dedicated a museum to the whistle, the Museum of Earthen Whistles. But other places in Apulia also celebrate this “jewel”, the town of Gravina has arranged, for example, a monument at the city entrance, a huge whistle in the shape of a rooster that, with his puffed chest, greets all people entering the city. Let’s not forget the “Salento whistles”, small traditional and artistic ocarina instruments, products of 50 PUGLIAmipiaci the expertise of the craftsmen from Salento. Today the whistle for many artist-craftsmen stands for a form of creative expression that makes them indulge their imagination and represent the world with burlesque, satirical or dreamy eyes. For all the others, at present like in the past, the urge to whistle in order to chase away evil spirits and negative energies is always strong. Trusting or not these beliefs and superstitions, whistling has always aroused joy and the desire to have a whistle in our mouth allow us still to be a bit children. Curiosities How does a whistle work? Its working is simple: the air flow inflated in the whistle through the mouth is forced by a tight way divided into two by a middle blade. Thus, the air causes a whirlpool and a quick air vibration and, as a consequence, the emission of an high sound. When there are one or more holes modulating the sound (by closing the holes through the fingertips) it can be already considered as a rudimentary recorder. Instruments similar to the whistle had already been used in the ancient China by soldiers as a warning signal, and also in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Whistles used by these populations were built using different materials, wood, earthenware or animals’ horns. The modern whistle (just to make things clear, the one having inside a little ball that, standing in the air flow way, turns the whistle in a trill) has been conceived, instead, by James Hudson, in the second half of the XIX century, intended for football referees and then has so widely spread everywhere. Today the factory founded by Hudson still represents one of the main whistles’ factories in the world. PUGLIAmipiaci 51
