Rassegna The project is set in an industrial area defined by discontinuous settlement and a large collection of infrastructures. The soccer stadium, gas and oil stations, and structures for events act as metaphysical presences, set in a suspended, uncommon atmosphere around which a terrain vague solidifies on the surface, rendered vibrant by being crossed by streets of fast-moving traffic whose lines draw an illusionary “organic” geography on the ground. F.H. < 52 > Rassegna 80 The project’s fundamental concept is the staging of an infinite spatial experience, which interprets “motion” in all of its possible expressions and acts as a multiplier and accelerator of different, unpredictable situations and in whose content, container and user are identified until they dissolve in a network of flows through which the completed work reverberates with a system of material marks. The building is connected with the design’s “diagram”: the museum brings a dense and complex artificial landscape to view. This is achieved by stratifying and overlapping meeting places, transit infrastructures and functional planes in a logical progression tied with its morphogenetic process. The system of exhibit spaces is defined through a process of rotating and shifting the basic geometric figure of the circle following a helicoidal generatrix that passes through its center and with an angular shift of 120° which occur on vertically planes that are reciprocally staggered by one meter, to give the project a clear, modular and repeatable logic. The various levels are connected through systems of stairways and ramps, whose arch development is tangent to two subsequent circumferences, so as to graze the external perimeter of the museum as well as the internal core of services that border the multi-floor hollow volume in a movement that alternates between centrifugal and centripetal. The exhibit plan develops from top to bottom and is organized on two parallel and complementary routes, a unique metaphor of language that alternates in the sequence of the exhibit floors: a “spatial” trajectory – dedicated to the current production of MercedesBenz cars and semitrailers – and a “temporal” trajectory of products that have helped create its myth throughout history. Visitors enter the museum from the atrium passing through the ground floor, which also holds a restaurant and bookshop. During the elevator trip to the top floor, a multi-media presentation is projected on the panels and prepares visitors for the experience of the collections. They can also go down to the basement where there are temporary exhibits and a museum for children as well as administration and delivery spaces. The building’s sculptural quality is heightened by the arrangement of windows, often inclined in relationship to the façade’s vertical plane. The ceilings are alternatively recessed to create double volumes between the corresponding following floors, projecting orthogonally. Interpenetration of the systems of the museum’s components multiplies the usage potentials, creating a complex weave of references points, which are unpredictable and simultaneous. The visitors’ options for moving around (diagonally, on the plane or vertically, centrifugal or centripetal) include visual connections (from the first floors compelled towards the museum’s interior by the opaque walls that follow the ramps and stairs to long open fields that open on the city through the effect of band windows), in the theme-based arrangement of objects (turned inwards in the area that explores the legend and the project outwards for that of current production), that can be perceived from different heights through an innovative exhibit design. The passage from the formal process to the construction was achieved by a process of continuous feedback between the artisan models in basic materials that analytically define the system of flows and operation of the exhibit floors and techniques of CAD morphing that transform the lines of the areas of variable thickness and volumes, controlling the spatial performances and conferring the project a strong malleable aspect based on the technology used. In this way, the simulation of the system of actions generated by the movement of people through the space becomes a diagram of the forces of the material organization of that space. As such, the reinforced concrete bearing walls, completely traversed by the systems, and the special band windows in reinforced fiberglass alternate vertically and give the museum a strong ascending acceleration. The entire building acts like a contraption in the service of technology without making a show of its role, which is subordinated to the pursuit of a specific spatial result. In order to multiply the degree of freedom that the museum system offers, the bearing structures are distributed on the building’s façade and concentrated in the core of services suspended over the empty through space. The result is a nonhierarchal space that is dynamic and polycentric, in which the crossings of the branches of the paths is rendered an eloquent metaphor of the “tree of choices” in the open work. Forces of attraction and repulsion interact ceaselessly, destabilizing the position of the viewer who, within an innovatively-designed contemporary diorama is absorbed in an automobile moving through an “Escher-esque” maze of highway connections.
