EX: Amici Come Prima!
Agreements and disagreements, crimes and misdemeanours, ongoing love of couples in
jeopardy whose lives intersect by a fickle twist of fate for a moment, or perhaps forever, in
this romantic comedy of errors where nothing is as it seems. It is an ironic portrait of the
sentimental history, or perhaps of the sentimental geography, of our times.
That’s because over the course of our lives, we all end up being an “ex”: an ex-student,
an ex-comrade in arms, an ex-friend, an ex-best friend, an ex-boyfriend, an ex-husband.
Our film is dedicated to them, to the boundless army of “exes”. For whom there is always
a second chance.
5
EX: Amici Come Prima!
He is about to marry the girl he believes is the love of his life… until fate brings the
woman of his dreams into his life, a woman he had met in the past and who he bumps into
at the worst time. But maybe it’s too soon for him to become an EX.
She is a very successful divorce lawyer, the terror of the soon-to-be EX- husbands of her
clients, whom she punishes for pure enjoyment since she is in turn an… EX, who has
recently been abandoned by her partner. But by a fickle twist of fate she finally meets
Him, handsome and fascinating: Mr. Right Guy. Who unfortunately is also the wrong
EX- husband of one of her clients.
He is so desperate over becoming an EX, furthermore because he was dumped with a text
message, he decides to go into therapy in order to get over the shock. And so, following a
casual change of identity with his doctor, he discovers that even psychiatry can have its
pleasant sides – so much so that he meets love where he would have never dreamed it
would have been possible.
She is a fascinating Baltic citizen; he is a married man, an unscrupulous and very
ambitious Member of Parliament from southern Italy who falls madly in love with her.
And to make things worse, the Nordic woman is also a very much married powerful Prime
6
Minister. But the ways of politics are infinite and what should have been a one-night fling
turns into something that changes their lives and perhaps will turn them into two happy
EXes.
There he is, a habituate single who hasn’t got the time to become an EX. He hasn’t got a
wife, he hasn’t got a girlfriend, whereas he collects relationships with girls who are full of
EXes. But there is an unexpected surprise in store for him, too.
Director’s Notes
EX: AMICI COME PRIMA! is a film belonging to the great tradition of Italian comedy,
but has also been influenced by the sophisticated Anglo-Saxon comedy genre: an array of
stories where the leading characters have a status of EX in common – namely exhusbands, ex-girlfriends, ex-something or other.
And this time something unusual has occurred in our career. Our films were the ones that
usually set off trends and inspired sequels – just like what happened with “Sapore di mare
2”, “Yuppies 2” and others – whereas this time we were the ones to collect the Lucisano
trademark and the legacy of a film as successful as EX directed by Brizzi. I’m glad about
this since I appreciate Brizzi, who we have been acquainted with since the times at the
Centro Sperimentale when Enrico noticed him, and also because I liked his movie very
7
much. A mutual pleasure and an unusual passing of the baton since he confessed to us that
he owes a lot to “Sapore di Mare” (aka “Time for Loving”) because that’s where he gained
his inspiration for “Notte prima degli esami” (aka “Night Before the Finals”) .
That being said and done, EX: AMICI COME PRIMA! has nothing to do with the previous
film although obviously there is a common thread that runs throughout, namely the fact
that the leading characters are EXes or have something to do with EXes. They are EXfiancés, EX-wives, EX-flames manqué who experience some improbable sentimental
affairs, like many of the stories that occur at present. And within the plot of the movie –
that somehow recalls “Love Actually” – there are stories and people who seem they will
never meet; then, by a simple twist of fate, they bump into each other and the leading
characters gain entrance into each other’s stories. Just like what happens in reality, as
always exceeding the imagination.
We’ve told the story of extremely contemporary people: for example there’s a modernday politician (Salemme), who has a greedy wife (Tosca D’Aquino), and all he can think
of once he’s been elected to the European Parliament is how to best exploit his new status.
But then his flight is postponed due to bad weather conditions and he meets a woman
(Stefanenko) who changes everything about him: not only his way of doing politics, but
perhaps even his marital status. Were we to quote something, this might bring to mind
“Up in the Air” starring George Clooney.
Then there’s the character, resembling Sandra Bullock in an American comedy, of the
husband (Gassman) whose wife turns to an attorney when she files for a separation (but
especially with the intent on slaughtering him) and discovers it’s a female lawyer
(Foglietta) who is angrier at men than herself since her partner has just abandoned her. So,
by a quirk of fate, the attorney falls in love with her client’s ex-husband and this leads to
an unexpected outcome.
8
Then there’s the story, linked to the tradition of Italian comedy, of the bank clerk
(Brignano) who has just married his colleague (Mannino); they’re at the airport, about to
take off on their honeymoon, when he meets an EX-flame manqué (Solari) and discovers
that their story never came to a head only due to a series of misunderstandings. So he
doesn’t think twice to tell her that he isn’t married.
We’ve worked on the story for about a year together with Fulvio and Federica Lucisano;
over that period of time we threw out some stories and then inserted others. But I’m
happy with the results, just as I’m very happy about the cast that has collaborated with us
at length. A group of talented actors, so much so that it wasn’t easy to organize the
shooting because of their many engagements.
Once again, some new entries were made along the way; this was the case for Anna
Foglietta, whom I was not acquainted with, but then I saw her in Max Bruno’s film
entitled “Nessuno mi può giudicare” (aka “Escort in Love”) and realized she was very
talented. Anna played her part beautifully and I am very pleased about having chosen her.
Then there’s Alessandro Gassman who I’ve always been acquainted with, since the times
when I was assistant-director for “Brancaleone” (aka “Brancaleone at the Crusades”) and
he was a little boy who used to wander around the set. But, oddly enough, we’ve never
worked together beforehand. Having been acquainted for years, with motion pictures
running in our families, working together proved to be an experience that we were lacking
and it has also been a pleasant one.
There is Paolo Ruffini, who we’ve been acquainted with for years. We appreciate his
comedy and the freshness he manages to convey to all of his characters.
Brignano has been a confirmation because this was the sixth film we’ve worked in
together. I find that he gets more and more talented as he matures. I had directed Teresa
9
Mannino in a commercial together with Raoul Bova; I thought she was very talented and
was waiting for the right chance to “use” her once again…
Liz Solari is very popular in Argentina, but her face is mostly unknown to the Italian
screen. She has proven to be a wonderful revelation as she played the part of Consuelo.
I haven’t worked with Ricky Memphis since the times of “I Mitici” starring Claudio
Amendola. I was very pleased to have him in a comedy that revealed all of his most
unprecedented and intimate aspects, having little to do with his harsh countenance that
audiences were used to.
It was my first experience with Gabriella Pession and she has proven to be very talented in
her role as a slightly naive girl whose frailness is linked to her being an EX. Salemme is
the champion of comedy we all know, while Ms. Stefanenko is a performer with a great
personality although her face is somewhat new for the silver screen. And Tosca is a great
actress coming from the tradition of Neapolitan theatre.
A film with a multiplicity of voices and a very active set considering we filmed in the
Lazio region and on the Amalfi coast in Italy, then in Frankfurt and Brussels. Searching
for the locations has also been a stimulating job since each couple belongs to a different
social background and therefore even the sites had to contribute to identifying the
characters in the film on a psychological and social level. So when in Rome we visited the
most modern popular districts and then the more traditionally bourgeois ones, offering a
social interpretation of the city. There are also some scenes that have been filmed on a
ship since Brignano and Mannino were on a Mediterranean honeymoon cruise; we filmed
the scenes on a motionless ship anchored at the Civitavecchia port.
10
Interview with Carlo Vanzina
“How did you come up with the idea for this film?
“The film producer Federica Lucisano made me an “indecent proposal”:
filming a
comedy with a multiplicity of voices and intertwining stories in the wake of the great
success obtained by Fausto Brizzi’s film entitled “Ex”. My brother Enrico and I have
never written and directed a story referring to a film made by others; on the contrary, other
directors filmed the sequels to original films that we had come up with such as “Sapore di
mare 2” or “Yuppies 2”. But the interesting new aspect of this film is that it isn’t a simple
sequel: the idea was that of using couples that have broken up or couples that are about to
break up to describe the people and stories of contemporary Italy, a sort of research, a
“little portrait” comprising the various humanities of modern-day Italians. I was happy to
accept the challenge since I liked “Ex” very much and because I was sure that this
unprecedented opportunity would be a good exercise towards returning to Italian light and
multifaceted comedies from the past, but broadening the sentimental part that had been
somewhat neglected in more recent films”.
“You have defined this film as “a romantic comedy of errors where nothing is as it
seems”: in what sense?”
“Compared to Brizzi’s first film, there is obviously a common denominator given the
topic: the main characters are exes or have something to do with boyfriends and wives
from the recent or not so recent past, or with old flames manqué, and nearly all of them
experience improbable and precarious sentimental affairs.
We’ve done our best to
11
describe a series of characters and typologies that are decidedly contemporary by using a
light mood. When people used to break up in the past, they used to meet or write a letter.
Today’s technology has influenced everything and love stories often come to a close with
a text message… The plot of the film – which was ambitiously inspired by certain recent
British comedies starring Hugh Grant, written or directed by Richard Curtis, such as
“Love Actually” – involves various events and people who should have never met. But
then, by a simple twist of fate, they bump into each other again and sometimes the main
characters in a certain story end up inside another one”.
“What criteria did you use when choosing your actors and how did you get along
with them?”
“Enrico Brignano was simply a confirmation, I believe this is our sixth film together. I
find he gets more and more talented the more he matures. The same goes for Salemme, a
true champion of comedy, this being our third film together. I was also very pleased to
meet Ricky Memphis once again. We haven’t worked together since the times of “I
Mitici” starring Claudio Amendola, and this comedy part has revealed his most
unprecedented and intimate side. We have been acquainted with Paolo Ruffini since the
times of “Un’estate ai Caraibi” and we very much appreciate his talent as a comedian and
the freshness he manages to convey to all of his characters. There were quite a few nice
surprises in store thanks to the new entries: we’ve always known Alessandro Gassman,
we’ve always casually met each other and in this film he has proven to be a fantastic actor
and a wonderful man as a whole. Fulvio and Federica Lucisano spoke to me about Anna
Foglietta’s talent since they had produced Max Bruno’s “Nessuno mi puo’ giudicare” (aka
“Escort in Love”) where she performed in an excellent manner alongside Paola Cortellesi.
I am happy we chose her for this film, where she played a difficult and very beautiful role.
Natasha Stefanenko was perfect for the part of a woman from the east with a lot of charm
and a strong personality. Gabriella Pession proved to be very talented in the role of a
slightly naive girl whose frailty was influenced by her being an ex.
While Teresa
Mannino’s liveliness struck me when I directed her in a recent commercial starring Raoul
12
Bova for a telephone company. Tosca D’Aquino has confirmed the fact that she is a great
actress thriving on the prestigious tradition of Neapolitan theatre.
Interview with Enrico Vanzina
“What was your mood when tackling the screenplay for this film?”
“Ex-Amici come prima” has marked for my brother and myself a sort of return to our
origins, to our specific distinguishing characteristics, because basically we were the ones
who came up with this sort of movie genre.
Once I accepted Fulvio and Federica
Lucisano’s invitation to “pick up the baton” represented by Fausto Brizzi’s very successful
film entitled “Ex”, Carlo and I tried to establish the plot of each single new story by
blending emotions and comedy while taking into account the characteristics of the various
actors. Writing the dialogues and imagining the situations is a huge advantage when you
already know the actors who will be performing – you can imagine what they’ll be saying
and what they’ll be doing”.
“Are there specific references and considerations regarding contemporary Italian
customs?”
13
“I hope so. I don’t want to seem presumptuous, but I think we were rather successful in
portraying the present times. The film offers a glimpse at the typical reality of our times,
for example it speaks about politics, of bewilderment and the lack of clear-cut roles. Love
stories experienced by today’s people in their thirties are very different from those
experienced by the people of the same age thirty years ago. Males are clearly more fragile
than females and we try to describe how relationships have changed. For example Paolo
Ruffini’s character comes to mind, who is a steadfast single who regularly meets very
uninhibited and brazen women. I consider it a very credible film, it is never grotesque or
overly parodistic but true to reality. It’s got very modern characters who are in the grips
with a very lively reality. Each one of these characters has great flaws. The movie is
constructed in such a way that it begins in a certain manner and then along the way it turns
into something else – typical of classic Italian comedy. But we enjoyed trying our hand at
going beyond, using plots recollecting American romantic/brilliant comedies, also
glimpsing at the sophisticated British genre while blending various hues of sentimental
comedy. I’d like to also underline the packaging of this little/great movie that was filmed
in a beautiful and unprecedented Rome (I’m thinking of the nocturnal finale shot in Castel
Sant’Angelo) but also on the Amalfi coast, in Brussels and Germany as locations
presumably set in a Baltic country where Natasha Stefanenko’s character is Prime
Minister”.
“How do you depict the instability and precariousness of our times?”
“Especially by analyzing various types of sentimental relationships.
It seems that
everyone today is taken up by a frenzy of change at all costs, in the hope of finding
something better. Not many people understand how fundamental a certain degree of
stability in one’s love life truly is in order to grow, even if you are satisfied with your job.
Ultimately the power of that old emotion always manages to be triumphant. This is very
reassuring especially nowadays, when values have all come crumbling down."

40
In Europe she worked for designers such as Roberto Cavalli and Jean-Paul Gaultier; she
has also been on the front covers of magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Elle, Para Ti,
Women’s Health, Luz, FTV, Max and others.
Following her participation in a very successful television show called “Bailando por un
sueno” (the Argentinian version of “Dancing with the Stars”) which led her to the finals of
the contest, she performed in the leading role of the musical “Barbie Live! Las aventuras
de la Princesa” where she demonstrated her talent singing, dancing and performing – in
fact the show was a big hit in Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico and Brazil. She made her
motion pictures debut in the Argenintian version of “High School Musical”.
She became popular in Italy thanks to her participation in the Argentinian television show
on soccer called “Champs 12” that was broadcast on the Italia 1 channel beginning in June
2010, in addition to being televised in Spain and Israel.
She took acting courses in the most famous academies in London, such as the London
Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, the Guildford School of Acting and the Central
School

THE PRODUCERS
FULVIO LUCISANO - Producer
Born in Rome on 1 August 1928, he was awarded the Order of Merit for Labour on 28
May 2007.
Fulvio Lucisano belongs to the generation of Italians who witnessed Italy being destroyed,
torn apart and overrun by foreign armies. Yet from this humiliation he drew the will,
determination and courage to turn a new leaf and lead his country, that had been razed to
the ground, to becoming one of the top-ten in the world in only a matter of fifteen years.
A generation that was the key player in the so-called Italian Miracle. Lucisano was born
in Rome on 1 August 1928 and obtained a degree in Law at the “La Sapienza” University
of Rome in 1954.
Motion pictures represented a dream, the magic of a virtual world where everything was
beautiful, fascinating and full of emotions for all the Italian youngsters of his age who
grew up among the privations of war and autarchy, in the setting of provincial Italy during
the Thirties and Forties.
Even before he completed his university studies, in 1949
Lucisano was already involved in filming the documentary ANNO SANTO produced by
Samuel Bronston, illustrating the great 1950 Jubilee. The following year he began his
collaboration with the Istituto Luce, producing a Cinegiornale mensile (monthly newsreel)
for Latin America. His activities as documentary film-maker in those years grew to such
an extent that Fulvio Lucisano worked on (either on his own or for the Documento Film
company) approximately three-hundred documentaries that included (among others)
PIAZZA NAVONA and LO SCRIGNO DEL CARDINALE. The latter illustrated the
53
masterpieces preserved on the premises of the Borghese Gallery and expressed that
contemporary trend of proposing an image of Italy as the extraordinary container of a
unique artistic and cultural heritage. During the early Fifties he again collaborated on the
production of the newsreel called ORIZZONTE CINEMATOGRAFICO.
Lucisano’s professional training took place while he was in constant and direct touch with
foreign entrepreneurs and film facilities (especially American ones). This was very
important for an Italian producer who was making his appearance on the international
marketplace following years of local autarchy and narrow-mindedness. This opportunity
actually allowed him to develop a remarkable talent in acting on the international
marketplaces, developing a firm belief about the necessity of pursuing policies for
openness and discussion regarding the realities of other countries, building channels for
commercial, cultural and creative exchange.
But working in the field of documentaries was only a first step. His true objective was the
world of motion-picture productions, which became a reality thanks to his first movie: I
QUATTRO DEL GETTO TONANTE, filmed in Vista Vision using a camera that he built
together with Giovanni Ventimiglia (subsequently adopted by Technicolor).
It was the beginning of a long and successful career that resulted in the foundation of the
Italian International Film (IIF) on 1 August 1958, which he led and of which he
continues to be President. A company that already from its name (a tribute to American
International Pictures that launched outstanding directors such as Francis Ford Coppola,
Roger Corman and Peter Bogdanovich) wanted to claim the importance granted to genre
movies and wanted to reserve constant attention towards the tastes of the public. The
films bearing the IIF trademark were awarded success by the public and its official
consecration took place in 2005 during the 62nd Venice Film Festival when its Director
Marco Müller promoted (within the Retrospective on the Secret History of Italian Cinema
sector) the restoration and screening of four films produced by Fulvio Lucisano, namely
LE SPIE VENGONO DAL SEMIFREDDO (aka “Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs”) and
54
TERRORE NELLO SPAZIO (aka “Demon Planet”) directed by Mario Bava, COSA AVETE
FATTO A SOLANGE? (aka “What Have They Done to Solange?) and IL MEDAGLIONE
INSANGUINATO (aka “The Cursed Medallion”) directed by Massimo Dalla Mano, which
presently are unanimously considered cult movies.
Throughout its fifty years of uninterrupted activities, Italian International Film still proves
to be one of the most active and consolidated production companies, in addition to being
one of the oldest ones, well-known both in Italy and abroad. Its human and professional
reliability, entrepreneurship, capacity of perceiving innovations and trends are at the
foundation of this company that has produced over 130 films. These include classics from
the best Italian comedy genre directed by Steno, Dino Risi, Pasquale Festa Campanile,
Giorgio Capitani and Alberto Sordi; together with some very brave works that have
contributed towards the prestige of Italian cinema such as RICOMINCIO DA TRE (aka
“I’m Starting from Three”) by Massimo Troisi, L’INCHIESTA (aka “The Inquiry”) by
Damiamo Damiani, PER LE ANTICHE SCALE (aka “Down the Ancient Staircase”)
directed by Mauro Bolognini, UN RAGAZZO DI CALABRIA (aka “The Boy from
Calabria”) by Luigi Comencini, IL GIOVANE TOSCANINI (aka “Young Toscanini”) by
Franco Zeffirelli, IL GRANDE COCOMERO (aka “The Great Pumpkin”) by Francesca
Archibugi and FARINELLI by Gerard Corbiau.
The comedy genre has never been
abandoned and the series of box-office hits such as ARAGOSTA A COLAZIONE (aka
“Lobster for Breakfast”), IL LADRONE (aka “The Good Thief”), IL BELPAESE, IL
TASSINARO (aka “The Taxi Driver”) continue with the very recent films entitled IO NO
SPIK INGLISH (aka “I Don’t Speak English”) directed by Carlo Vanzina, PALLA DI
NEVE (aka “Snowball”) by Maurizio Nichetti and FANTOZZI: IL RITORNO by Neri
Parenti.
In 2004 Fulvio Lucisano produced the first movie directed and written by Susanna
Tamaro, entitled NEL MIO AMORE. His careful attention towards young directors has
been rewarded with one of the greatest production successes of his long career: the debut
movie called NOTTE PRIMA DEGLI ESAMI (aka “The Night Before Finals”) directed by
55
Fausto Brizzi, was a box-office hit that deserved 11 nominations for the David di
Donatello award. The film went on to win the award in the most important category:
namely Best Direction Debut.
The newquel NOTTE PRIMA DEGLI ESAMI – OGGI was released in Italy in 2007, on St.
Valentine’s Day, obtaining the same extraordinary box-office success as its predecessor.
Another film released in 2007 was CEMENTO ARMATO (aka “Concrete Romance”), the
directing debut of Marco Martani, starring the great mystery-book author Giorgio Faletti.
The last film produced by Fulvio Lucisano was QUESTA NOTTE È ANCORA NOSTRA
during the 2008 movie season, which was appreciated by audiences and sales alike. And
another box-office hit was the 2009 movie directed by Fausto Brizzi called EX; the
director continued his collaboration with Italian International Film on two more movies
entitled MASCHI CONTRO FEMMINE that was released in October 2010 for 01
Distribution and FEMMINE CONTRO MASCHI.
One of the latest projects was the
directing debut of Massimiliano Bruno in NESSUNO MI PUO’ GIUDICARE (aka “Escort
in Love”) starring Raoul Bova, Paola Cortellesi and Rocco Papaleo that was released in
March 2011. It went on to be awarded the Nastro D’Argento as Best Comedy of the Year,
the David di Donatello in the Best Leading Actress category and two Globi D’Oro in the
Best Actor and Best Comedy categories, with ticket sales amounting to approximately €8million.
IIF has broadened its activities to the field of television productions during the 2004/2005
season, producing various mini television series. The first one, entitled RICOMINCIO DA
ME was directed by Rossella Izzo, starring Barbara D’Urso, Stefania Sandrelli and Ricky
Tognazzi, was broadcast by the Mediaset network and obtained excellent ratings.
L’UOMO DELLA CARITÀ directed by Alessandro di Robilant for the Mediaset television
network, was previewed at the International Rome Festival as a special event. Then
L’INCHIESTA (aka “The Inquiry”) directed by Giulio Base for the Rai television network,
was a mini series that thanks to the exceptional commitment invested in the film and its
talented cast (Andrea Porporati wrote the screenplay together with the best-selling author
56
Valerio Massimo Manfredi; the film starred Daniele Liotti, Max von Sydow, F. Murray
Abraham, Dolph Lundgren and Ornella Muti) was also distributed to Italian and American
movie theatres.
As the logical continuation of his presence on the international market, Fulvio Lucisano is
also involved in procurement and distribution activities for foreign films. More than fourhundred films have been distributed with the IIF trademark over the years: cult movies
such as BOXCAR BERTHA (aka “America 1929 – Sterminateli senza pietà”) directed by
Martin Scorsese and THELMA & LOUISE by Ridley Scott; entertaining comedies such as
FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (aka “4 matrimoni e un funerale”) by Mike Newell
and FRENCH KISS directed by Lawrence Kasdan; box-office hits such as OVER THE
TOP starring Sylvester Stallone and BODY OF EVIDENCE starring Madonna; elegant
auteur films such as INDOCHINA (Oscar award winner) directed by Regis Wargnier,
CARRINGTON by Christopher Hampton and SLEEPERS by Barry Levinson that was
greatly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
In more recent years, thanks to the agreement with Columbia Tristar for the Italian
distribution of films produced by Revolution Studios, some of Julia Roberts’s best
performances have been released with the IIF trademark (AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS
and MONA LISA SMILE), in addition to those by Adrien Brody (THE JACKET), Nicolas
Cage (LORD OF WAR) and Richard Gere (BEE SEASON). The latest foreign films
acquired by IIF for Italian distribution were JOHN RAMBO (written, performed and
directed by Sylvester Stallone) and RIGHTEOUS KILL (starring Al Pacino and Robert De
Niro, an outstanding success with the public and critics alike). And again in 2009 came
the release of THE BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL – NEW ORLEANS directed by
Werner Herzog, starring Nicholas Cage and Eva Mendes that participated in the
competition at the Venice Film Festival; in addition to BROOKLYN’S FINEST directed by
Antoine Fuqua, starring Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes and Ellen Barkin that
was presented at the Venice Film Festival that same year. CONAN THE BARBARIAN 3D,
directed by Marcus Nispel, starring Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols and Ron Perlman; and
57
finally DRIVE, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, starring Ryan Gosling, Carey
Mulligan, Bryan Cranston and Christina Hendricks was presented at the 2011 edition of
the Cannes Film Festival, winning an award in the Best Director category and released
September 30th.
Another feature film was produced in 2009:
MI RICORDO ANNA FRANK (aka
“Memories of Anne Frank”) based on the book by Alison Leslie Gold that collects the
painful account of Hanneli Goslar who was a friend of Anne Frank and of her family.
And ultimately conscious of the fact that today’s market must be addressed in all of its
many facets, Fulvio Lucisano has broadened his activities to also include movie facilities.
During the Eighties he directed the Cannon circuit, which later became Cinema 5, and
subsequently worked with his partner Aurelio De Laurentiis towards the creation of a
Miniplex circuit in the city of Rome. Then, in September 1998, his Italian International
Film inaugurated the Multiplex Andromeda theatre in Rome that has proven to be
advanced in the field of screening technologies and architectural elegance.
In 2007 IIF, through its holding IIH, acquired the Stella Film company that manages
multiplex movie theatres in Naples, Afragola, Benevento, Caserta and inaugurated the
Andromeda Multiplex in Brindisi on Christmas Day 2007.
Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic, decorated Fulvio Lucisano with the
coveted Order of Merit for Labour award in October 2007. This was a great event not only
on a personal level, but also for the recognition granted to motion pictures as an industry.
As the latest addition to the IIF family, the Home Video sector has fostered the market
distribution of the company’s well-stocked library, initially through partnership
agreements with Columbia Tristar Home Video and more recently with 01 Distribution.
58
But Fulvio Lucisano’s commitment to the world of motion pictures has not been limited to
running his own business. Fully aware of the necessity for upholding lively and vital
mutual relations with different production realities and cinema cultures, he has always
worked at an associative and representative level on a national and international front,
holding the office of President of the National Union of Producers and leading the
National Association of Cinema and Audiovisual Industries (ANICA) for two mandates
from 1998 until 2001. This year he has been nominated President of the association’s
“Media” Commission.
In the international field, Fulvio Lucisano is recognized as member of AFMA Arbitration
Advisory Committee, Fèdération International des Associations de Producteurs de Films,
Association of International Collective Management of Audiovisual Works (AGICOA)
and Le Club des Producteurs Europeèns.
During his long-standing professional career, he has been rewarded many recognitions and
prizes, including three Nastri d’Argento and four David di Donatello awards.
In conclusion, Fulvio Lucisano represents that breed of Italian businessmen distinguished
by a great passion for their work, their flexibility, their ingenuity and creative skills that
keep the prestige of their country and the good name of the Italian product on international
markets alive. His honesty, his top organizational and working skills, together with his
great humanity make him a person of absolute personal charm, a man who is always
surrounded by the esteem and affection of all those who have had the opportunity of
knowing him and accompanying him in the realization of his projects.
FEDERICA LUCISANO - Producer
59
Even before completing her formal education, Federica Lucisano began to work with
Italian International Film. IIF is a family company that has been part of the history of
Italian cinema for two generations. She began her career by working as a production
secretary and supervised the various production stages of some full-feature films such as
L’OTHELLO directed by Franco Zeffirelli, L’INCHIESTA (aka “The Inquiry”) by
Damiano Damiani and IN UNA NOTTE DI CHIARO DI LUNA directed by Lina
Wertmuller.
Federica Lucisano was born in Rome on 15 February 1967 and in 1992 she graduated cum
laude in Economics at “La Sapienza” University of Rome with a dissertation on La
gestione strategica delle imprese di produzione cinematografica (The Strategic
Management of Movie Production Companies). She continued to attend the university
environment for the subsequent five years as Assistant Professor to the Industry &
Commerce chair. During that same year she was the Manager of Foreign Procurement for
Italian International Film, involving intense and focused distribution activities on the
Italian territory.
Those were the years in which film rights were purchased for movies that would be very
successful on the Italian market such as FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL (aka
“Quattro matrimoni ed un funerale”) by Mike Newell and FRENCH KISS directed by
Lawrence Kasdan, along with other box-office hits such as SLEEPERS by Barry Levinson
(starring Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon and Jason Patrick) that
gained the greatest levels of acclaim by audiences and critics alike over the past few years.
One of the most recent successes of Italian International Film is the contract that was
signed in 2001 with Columbia Tristar for the distribution of a series of films produced by
Revolution Studios, including:
THE ONE, THE ANIMAL and the hit AMERICA’S
SWEETHEARTS (aka “I perfetti innamorati”) with its exceptional cast of stars (Julia
Roberts, Catherine Zeta Jones, Billy Crystal and John Cusack) – proving to be one of the
greatest box-office hits of the Italian 2001-2002 movie season. MONA LISA SMILE,
60
starring Julia Roberts, was a blockbuster of the 2003 Christmas season. The beautiful film
entitled THE JACKET, starring the Academy Award winner Adrian Brody and Keira
Knightley, was one of the latest films distributed by Italian International Film. At the
close of 2005, two great American stars were brought to the Italian screens by IIF:
Nicolas Cage and Richard Gere, in the two important productions entitled LORD OF WAR
and BEE SEASON. Some of the titles acquired from 2008 to the present are JOHN
RAMBO (written, performed and directed by Sylvester Stallone), RIGHTEOUS KILL (aka
“Sfida Senza Regole”, directed by John Avnet, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro),
THE BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL – NEW ORLEANS (aka “Il cattivo tenente”,
directed by Werner Herzog, starring Nicholas Cage and Eva Mendes, in competition at the
2009 Venice Film Festival), BROOKLYN’S FINEST (directed by Antoine Fuqua, starring
Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes and Ellen Barkin, presented at the 2009
Venice Film Festival), CONAN THE BARBARIAN 3D (directed by Marcus Nispel, starring
Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols and Ron Perlman) and finally DRIVE (directed by Nicolas
Winding Refn, starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston and Christina
Hendricks), presented at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, winner in the Best Direction
category, released on 30 September 2011).
Alongside her work in the Procurement and Distribution Department, Federica Lucisano
began to broaden her activities in the production sector and produced some feature-films
including LA MIA VITA A STELLE E STRISCE and the outstanding 2006 success entitled
NOTTE PRIMA DEGLI ESAMI (aka “Night Before the Finals”) the debut of the young
movie director Fausto Brizzi, starring Giorgio Faletti, Cristiana Capotondi and Nicolas
Vaporidis. In 2007 NOTTE PRIMA DEGLI ESAMI – OGGI was released in Italy on St.
Valentine’s Day and it obtained the same extraordinary box-office success as its
predecessor. Another film released in 2007 was CEMENTO ARMATO (aka “Concrete
Romance”), marking the directing debut of Marco Martani and starring the great mysterybook author Giorgio Faletti. Then in 2008 came QUESTA NOTTE È ANCORA NOSTRA,
which was appreciated by audiences and sales alike. Fausto Brizzi directed the 2009
production of EX, a film starring outstanding actors such as: Silvio Orlando, Alessandro
61
Gassman, Fabio De Luigi, Cristiana Capotondi, Vincenzo Salemme, Nancy Brilli, Claudio
Bisio, Elena Sofia Ricci, Gianmarco Tognazzi, Flavio Insinna, Claudia Gerini and many
others, once again a hit at the box-office. Two more movies have been directed by Fausto
Brizzi, namely MASCHI CONTRO FEMMINE that was released in October 2010 for 01
Distribution and FEMMINE CONTRO MASCHI. One of the latest projects was the
directing debut of Massimiliano Bruno in NESSUNO MI PUO’ GIUDICARE (aka “Escort
in Love”) starring Raoul Bova, Paola Cortellesi and Rocco Papaleo that was released in
March 2011. Its sales amounted to nearly €8-million and the film won various prizes such
as the “Globo d’oro” in the Best Comedy and Best Actor categories, the “David di
Donatello” in the Best Actress category, and the “Nastro d’Argento” as Best Comedy of
the Year.

On 23 December 2003, Federica Lucisano was nominated Managing Director of Italian
International Film, Advisor for the other companies belonging to the Group, in addition to
being the President of Italian International Holding. In 2006 the Holding acquired Stella
