UNA STRAORDINARIA MANUTENZIONE Clinicaurbana con Anna Sanga e Chiara Buccolini The timing is critical - opportunity is unique and will occur once only. A strategy for cities will be established. We wait for a choice to be made to decide the future of unused buildings: their re-use or demolition. But no decision will be taken until sufficient funds can be found. While waiting, those buildings could be put to immediate use. Users would adapt to the space as convenient, carrying out any necessary repairs. Once upon a time at Marghera, not far from the GMI mills, there was an old and derelict industrial area. Primo Pioneer and Andy Mann, partners in crime, decided to tilt at the windmills: they would build their workshop there.001 Never short of a bright idea Primo threw himself into everything he did and often got completely carried away; however, he was not yet given up as hopeless. Andy was pragmatic with a mathematical mind and very good with his hands. He could guess the size of things at a glance, simply because he knew his hand span measured exactly 14 centimeters. When he saw the rusty hopper,002 the highly imaginative Primo went into raptures. He had one of his intuitions: the building, with a rail C’era una volta a Marghera, nella zona dei Grandi Mulini Italiani, un’area industriale ormai dismessa e abbandonata. Quando l’immaginoso Primo vide la tramog- ENG ITA track running through the middle, would make a perfect production plant.003 He prophesied: «Here some shall take a shower while others sleep, and some shall work at their computers while others eat and pee.004 All fitting together perfectly to make a wall.005 And in that wall Dale Chippings will be able to find the right tools for woodwork and Rusty Nayler for working with iron. The raw materials will be brought by train, moved by wagon006 and protected by an aeroplane007 – now there’s a high-flying idea! – The hopper will be the pièce de résistance, we’ll make it a thermal pool!»008 Andy listened in dismay to these weird ideas and thought nothing like it would ever see the light of day. Mentally he had measured every inch of the tale but could not conceive how each wagon axle could bear a maximum load of 14 tons. But so it was.009 Primo’s odd yet highly efficient workshop became a hive of furious activity, arguing and discussing everything enthusiastically. The results were all very strange: a table with legs above and below, a cupboard that opened only from inside, a chopping board made of iron and a wooden saucepan. There were no rules at all.010 To achieve better results, they needed to have a panel turner, through-feed borer, band saw, beveller, plasma cutter and turps,011 but there was a snag: the high cost. And Primo was broke. However, the day Andy gia002 arrugginita, andò in visibilio ed ebbe una delle sue intuizioni. Non c’era una regola.010 ENG ITA Mann’s brother, Jigger, turned up at the workshop, Primo had his sharpest wits about him. Where Andy used hand spans, Jigger used his feet: he was a dancer with a great sense of rhythm and rococo taste. Unfortunately an accident confined him to a wheelchair; he had come to see his brother to get him to convert the chair into an eighteenth-century throne. Primo saw at once how he and his artisan friends could finance the purchase of the machinery. He put a proposition to Jigger: he would get Dale to make the new chair for him if he turned the building behind the workshop into a dancehall.012 Jigger leapt at the chance and Primo landed on his feet for once. Being a regular know-all, Jigger knew he would make a great DJ, knew all about organizing parties, and knew an aperitif had to be sumptuous. His first thought was to have a kitchen fit for a top chef, where his friend, Alfie Holfood, could prepare the finest delicacies grown on the most sustainable farms in the Veneto.013 Alfie Holfood and his gang got together a gargantuan meal for a group of guys who danced to groove. He became their guru and Primo grossed a goodly sum. Andy calculated: 14 Euros x 1400 people = 19,600 Euros. On the 14th day of each month crowds flocked to the vast concrete platform,014 attracted by the line-up,015 the strobe lighting and the visual effects; they were even prepared to queue for two hours to get in.016 The event be- came so famous they managed to get the famous vocal- Briocciatrice, pallinatrice, rotorbitale, sega a tuffo, seeger e tornio011 erano tutte componenti necessarie per ottenere risultati migliori, ma il loro difetto era il costo elevato. Primo che aveva l’occhio lungo 14 millimetri - glielo aveva misurato Solerte - capì subito come lui e i suoi amici artigiani avrebbero potuto finanziare i macchinari. ENG ITA ist, Constance Console, to come along.017 While Constance’s siren song drew the crowds, Jigger’s siren sounded constantly. There was not a moment’s peace.018 Queerest of all on these occasions was Rusty Nayler, an Englishman who had never been known to forgo his 14 pints of beer. Getting up in the morning was always an or- deal for him but with the arrival of his planer he managed to cut down considerably. With the newly-acquired machinery, the very latest in advanced technology, the workshop sprang to life and started producing furniture of every kind: chairs, tables, hobs, cupboards, shelves, refrigerators, lights and bidets.019 But they had no idea where to put any of these things though, strange to tell, they were just what was needed to complete a house.020 They all got to work very busily to build their own houses,021 supervised by Sylvan Echo, a supplier of con- struction materials.022 They cleared the rubble and corru- gated iron from the largest building, a concrete eyesore in the middle of the industrial area. Primo, in the grip of one of his prophetic visions, beat about the bush in front of the cleverer craftsmen; he fan- cied he could see a monster with tentacle-like arms and legs imprisoned among the forest of pillars and struggling to get free.023 This brilliant intuition inspired Sylvan to experiment with a construction system independent of the building as a whole.024 Adopting this principle, each house was person- alized: 14 euro x 1400 persone = 19600 euro, contò Solerte. Primo, in preda ad una della sue profetiche vi- ENG ITA to satisfy Alfie Holfood, they made a super-equipped kitchen with a hob that ran along rails, from the inside to the outside,025 so Alfie could have a large kitsch drawing room or, alternatively, a chic kitchen.026 The apartment at the end on the right was where Rosie Prospect lived.027 She had furnished a whole conservatory by herself028 and, as the finishing touch, pinned a notice to the doorpost: “Crystal Palace”.029 She had first visited the area before Primo to look for plants missing from her herbarium.030 That was also the first time the Native031 gave her a hand,032 as she was pick- ing cleavers. She was touched and their love blossomed between her embarrassment as she watched him from a quaking aspen033 and his gallant gift of tufted grass.034 She brought him warm blankets for the winter and he told her about his glorious past working in the factory where he now lived.035 When Primo Pioneer and Andy Mann decided to build their workshop there, the Native welcomed the invasion, hoping to get his job back, but Primo and Andy felt he could not be relied on: as soon as they put a hammer in his hands, he started to hammer the ground. The Native may have welcomed the intruders but the artisans, once their lofts were built, had a different idea. A spectre roamed the area, the spectre of the nosey parkers. To fight it, the artisans of the newly-created work- shop banded together in an almighty witch hunt. The time had come to sioni, menando il can per l’aia di fronte ai più ingegnosi tra gli artigiani, aveva immaginato che tra la griglia di pilastri fosse imprigionato un mostro con braccia e gambe tentacolari che tentava di liberarsi.023 Ispirato da questa geniale intuizione, Silvan sperimentò un sistema costruttivo che fosse indipendente dall’intero edificio.024 Seguendo questo principio, ogni abitazione era personalizzata: per accontentare Chicchi Bio fecero una cucina super accessoriata, dove il piano cottura sfrecciava su due binari, dall’interno verso l’esterno,025 e Chicchi poteva avere una volta un grande salone kitsch, un’altra volta una cucina chic.026 Nell’alloggio in fondo a destra abitava Gigliola Odorosa,027 che aveva allestito tutta una serra da sola,028 affiggendo sullo stipite dell’ingresso come tocco finale un’insegna con scritto“Crystal Palace”.029 La prima volta che andò nell’area fu prima di Primo, per aggiungere delle specie mancanti al suo erbario.030 Quella fu anche la prima volta che Aborigeno031 allungò le mani, mentre lei coglieva l’Attacamani.032 Sbocciò l’amore tra l’imbarazzo di lei che lo osservava dal Pioppo Tremulo,033 e la cavalleria di lui che le regalò una Bambagione Pubescente.034 Gigliola gli portava coperte calde per il rigido inverno mentre lui le raccontava il suo glorioso passato da operaio della fabbrica dove ora dimorava.035 Quando Primo Pioniere e Solerte Faccio decisero che lì sarebbe sorta la loro officina, Aborigeno accolse con entusiasmo questa ENG ITA separate public and private spaces. They built a wall036 that ran right across the northern part of the exterior space and passed inside the vaulted building. A system of movable panels037 set along the wall038 allowed the occupants to decide when to let the nosey parkers in.039 This solved the problem of the great num- ber of requests being brought to the workshop every day, overloading them with work. One time, one of these nosey parkers, a certain Generic, was impatient to have his new crème brulée spoon and was angrily urging poor Rusty to get the job done when he stepped too close to the planer040 and accidentally sliced off his nose. From then on, he was not just any electrician: he was Generic, the electrician without a nose. Sylvan acted at once to put up polycarbonate panels to protect the workshops, leaving a narrow passage, an interstice, between the new wall and the brick wall so everyone could watch the artisans at work without dis- turbing them.041 At this point, the business of sales, orders and col- lection of finished goods was envisaged inside the vaulted building,042 where the more innovative projects were also on display, such as the furniture kit complete with arm- chairs, table and chairs,043 - 044 or the over-scale ashtray that could become a bench or office.045 One day in the market Charles bought a table - cost next to nothing – What a bargain he got! Silvan intervenne subito montando pannelli in policarbonato per proteggere i laboratori, lasciando però un ristretto corridoio, uno spazio interstiziale tra la nuova parete e quella in ENG ITA then it was Jigger Who held a great party Raised lots of money To buy machinery To make the table Charles bought in the market For next to nothing What a bargain he got! the Native sang to himself in the market, swaying from side to side. He was the one thing not recycled at GMI: even his old home became Sylvan’s supply office. Primo’s agent had thought of the real way to attract people: he had filled an entire building with 14 comput- ers,046 to keep a blog updated, where he was constantly at work dealing with online purchase enquiries.047 Not far away, at the entrance to the area, Alfie Holfood’s wife worked in Sylvan Echo’s office.048 She was kept fully oc- cupied by her job and her 14 children, so she needed to move quickly between home,025 office048 and school.049 To re- duce her daily journeys, Mrs Holfood, who was a descend- ent of several doges, worked with Sylvan to devise a system of short cuts,050 using sheet piles.051 The piles were a great success and everybody living in the area wanted a personal- ized route between home and office. At a certain point Andy realized that the cost of maintaining these personal routes was too high in relation to the use made of them. So, after identifying the mostused stretches, he decided to eliminate some. Per attirare davvero la gente, ci aveva pensato l’agente di Primo, che per tenere sempre un blog aggiornato, aveva allestito un intero edificio con 14 computer046 a cui lavorava costantemente per rispondere a tutte le richieste di acquisti online.047 Poco lontano, all’ingresso dell’area, lavorava la moglie di Chicchi Bio nello studio di Sil- ENG ITA Primo trusted Rosie blindly and put her officially in charge of watering all the new flower boxes every day.053 Each evening, once this duty had been fulfilled, Rosie devot- ed herself to her love as yet unfulfilled, and stole down to the pier to meet the Native. Such a highly-respected public figure as herself could not afford to be seen with that mad- man. They met at the Lovers’ Bench: that was their spot.054 One day, however, when Primo was out for a stroll, he came upon them unawares. Rosie was so ashamed that the next day all the flowers turned bright red. However, other love affairs were conducted in broad day- light, such as Generic and Alfie Holfood’s eldest daughter. A great deal is owing to Generic. After the accident with the planer, he had been guaranteed a life-time’s supply of Alfie’s crème brulée. The way to his heart was through helpings of crème brulée. Generic became a regular visitor to the Holfood home and soon fell head over heels in love with the eldest daughter. His advances were not repulsed and after a short while they married. Rusty made them a set of saucepans as a wedding present. And so the genius of love in Generic generated a gener- ator. ENG ITA the generator. Generic switched it on.055 ENG A Generico si deve molto.
