Roma, 31 luglio 2013. “Sono molto contenta che HOU HANRU, esperto di chiara fama internazionale, abbia
accettato la direzione artistica del MAXXI, istituzione-frontiera della creatività contemporanea, in Italia e nel
mondo”.
Lo ha annunciato Giovanna Melandri, Presidente della Fondazione MAXXI, insieme alle consigliere di
amministrazione Beatrice Trussardi e Monique Veaute.
HOU HANRU, che incontrerà i giornalisti in una conferenza stampa prevista per il prossimo 29 agosto,
entrerà in carica a partire da settembre 2013.
La selezione, effettuata a livello mondiale a chiamata su curricula, è stata affidata dal CdA alla Odgers
Berndtson italiana, branch nazionale di uno dei maggiori gruppi europei di Executive Search. Sono stati
valutati candidati provenienti dalle più importanti istituzioni artistiche e culturali di sei paesi in tre continenti.
Il Direttore artistico avrà la responsabilità di progettare l’offerta culturale del MAXXI, tenendo conto della
complessità disciplinare della Fondazione, resa ancor più peculiare dalla presenza dell’unico museo
nazionale dedicato all’architettura.

che portò alla creazione del Centro per le arti contemporanee progettato da Zaha Hadid. L’Italia e Roma
hanno nel MAXXI la loro piattaforma di ricerca nell'arte, nell'architettura, nella fotografia, nel design e,
complessivamente, in tutti i linguaggi del XXI secolo. Un luogo aperto e creativo, un incubatore di energie
nuove.
Il Direttore artistico saprà dare nuovo slancio alla programmazione, collaborando con Margherita Guccione e
Anna Mattirolo, Direttrici di MAXXI Architettura e MAXXI Arte. Sono certa che Hanru sia la persona giusta per
raccogliere i tanti stimoli che emergono dalla creatività italiana, in connessione con i fermenti che animano la
scena internazionale”.

“Sono onorato di assumere la direzione artistica del MAXXI – dice Hou Hanru - un’istituzione aperta alla
contemporaneità ed al futuro. Sono pieno di speranza e di energie per dare il mio contributo alla crescita di
questo meraviglioso museo. E’ un periodo difficile in Italia e in molte altre parti del mondo, che affrontano la
sfida di un ripensamento globale dell’economia, della cultura, della politica e dei valori umani. Ma le difficoltà
implicano sempre opportunità per l’elaborazione di nuovi paradigmi. Il MAXXI, chiamato ad essere una
piattaforma per un dibattito pubblico sul rapporto dinamico tra creatività artistica e vita sociale, può e deve
diventare un’organizzazione esemplare per la produzione di arte, architettura, creatività e un laboratorio per
una nuova dimensione culturale condivisa. Il compito non è per niente facile. La sfida è grande. In ogni caso,

HOU HANRU è un critico e curatore che vive tra Parigi e San Francisco. Nato nel 1963 a Guangzhou, in
Cina, si è laureato all’Accademia Centrale di Belle Arti di Pechino. Dal 2006 al 2012 è stato “Director of
Exhibitions and Public Programs” e “Chair of Exhibition and Museum Studies” al San Francisco Art Institute.
Ha curato numerose mostre in tutto il mondo e diverse Biennali, tra cui, alla Biennale di Venezia, il Padiglione
Francese nel 1999, la mostra Z.O.U – Zone of Urgency nel 2003 e il Padiglione Cinese nel 2007; la Biennale
di Shangai nel 2000, quella di Tirana nel 2005, quella di Istanbul nel 2007 e quella di Lione nel 2009. Codirettore del primo “World Biennale Forum” di Gwangiu nel 2012, attualmente è il curatore della quinta
Triennale di Auckland (maggio – agosto 2013, Auckland, Nuova Zelanda).
È stato consulente in numerose istituzioni internazionali, tra cui Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) e Solomon
R. Guggenheim Museum (New York).
Collabora regolarmente con riviste internazionali d’arte, tra cui "Flash Art International", "Art in America", "Art
Asia Pacific", "Yishu", "Art-It”.
HOU HANRU: NOTA BIOGRAFICA
Hou Hanru (nato nel 1963 in Guangzhou, China) è un curatore e critico d’arte che vive tra Parigi e San
Francisco. Si è laureato all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Pechino e si è trasferito in Francia nel 1990 dove ha
vissuto per 16 anni prima di trasferisi a San Francisco nel 2006. Qui ha lavorato dal 2006 al 2012 al San
Francisco Art Institute come Director of Exhibitions and Public Program e Chair of Exhibition and Museum
Studies.
Al momento è co-direttore del primo World Biennale Forum (Gwangju, 2012).
Ha curato numerose mostre tra cui “China/Avant-Garde” (1989), “Parisien(ne)s” (1997), "Cities On The Move"
(1997–2000), la Biennale di Shanghai (2000), la Biennale di Gwangju (2002), Biennale di Venezia
(Padiglione francesce 1999, Z.O.U. -- Zone Of Urgency 2003, Padiglione cinese 2007), Notte Bianca (2004,
Paris), la seconda Triennale di Guangzhou (2005), la seconda Biennale di Tirana (2005), la decima Biennale
di Istanbul (2007), "Global Multitude" (Lussemburgo 2007), "Trans(cient)City" (Luxembourg 2007), EV+A
2008 (Limerick), "The Spectacle of the Everyday, la decima Biennale di Lione" (Lione, 2009). Attualmente è il

Rome, 1 August 2013: “I am delighted that HOU HANRU, an expert with an excellent international
reputation, has accepted to become the Artistic Director of MAXXI, an institution at the forefront of
contemporary creativity in Italy and in the world.”
The announcement was made by Giovanna Melandri, President of the Fondazione MAXXI, together
with the board members Beatrice Trussardi and Monique Veaute.
HOU HANRU, who will be meeting journalists at the press conference on 29th August, will take up the
position from September 2013.
The selection process based on curricula at international level, was entrusted by the board of directors to
Odgers Berndtson, the national branch of one of the leading European executive search groups.
Candidates from the most important artistic and cultural institutions from six countries on three
continents were evaluated.
The artistic director will be responsible for planning MAXXI’s cultural programme, taking into account the
Foundation’s unique disciplinary complexity, devoted to contemporary creativity.
“With the appointment of HOU HANRU as Artistic Director”, says Giovanna Melandri, “we shall finally
be completing the strategic plan that led to the creation of the centre for the contemporary arts designed
by Zaha Hadid. Italy and Rome have in MAXXI their platform for research in art, architecture,
photography, design and all the idioms of the 21st Century. An open and creative place, an incubator for
new energies.
The Artistic Director will work with Margherita Guccione and Anna Mattirolo, directors of MAXXI
Architettura and MAXXI Arte, to offer new impetus to the programming of the museum. I am sure that
Hanru is the right person to bring together the many stimuli emerging from Italian creativity, in
connection with the ferment of the international scene.”

architecture scene. Having worked in various contexts across the world, notably in Asia, Europe and
America, I'm full of hope and energy to participate in the invention and growth of this wonderful museum.
It is a complicated time in Italy and many parts of the world facing the challenge of global restructuring in
economy, culture, politics and human values. But complications always imply opportunities for paradigm
invention. The institution, being a platform for public debates on the dynamic relationship between
artistic creativity and social life, should and can become an exemplary organisation for significant art,
architecture and culture productions and a laboratory for new public culture. The task is by no means an
easy one. The challenge is huge. However, together with the fantastic team of the museum and the
support of the art, architecture and other creation communities, the public of diverse social origins, the
authorities and philanthropic circles, I am confident of the capacity of the institution to take this challenge
and succeed.

Hanru (born in 1963 in Guangzhou former Canton, China) is an art curator and critic who lives in Paris and
San Francisco.
He received degrees from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and moved from China to France in
1990. He lived 16 years in Paris before moving to San Francisco in 2006. He worked at San Francisco Art
Institute as Director of Exhibitions and Public Program and Chair of Exhibition and Museum Studies from
2006 to 2012. He is co-director of the first World Biennale Forum (Gwangju, 2012).
He has curated numerous exhibitions including “China/Avant-Garde” (1989), “Parisien(ne)s” (1997), "Cities
On The Move" (1997–2000), Shanghai Biennale (2000),Gwangju Biennale (2002), Venice Biennale (French
Pavilion, 1999, Z.O.U. -- Zone Of Urgency, 2003, Chinese Pavilion, 2007), Nuit Blanche (2004, Paris), the
2nd Guangzhou Triennial (2005), the 2nd Tirana Biennial (2005), the 10th Istanbul Biennial (2007), "Global
