Benvenuti a bordo. Nello scorso numero
di Flyreaders vi avevamo promesso
importanti novità. Naturalmente
manteniamo la promessa. Air Italy
è sempre più forte, anche grazie ad
un accordo strategico di partnership
strategica con Alitalia che vi spiegherà
nei dettagli il comandante Giuseppe
Gentile. Ma in questi mesi non ci siamo
limitati a questo accordo.
Air Italy ha aumentato significativamente
le sue destinazioni, sia nazionali che
internazionali. Ha mantenuto altissimo
il suo indice di puntualità (non ce ne
vogliano quei passeggeri che sono
comunque incappati in qualche ritardo,
che purtroppo può esserci) ed è riuscita
ad offrire prezzi molto concorrenziali,
soprattutto con prenotazioni fatte
per tempo. Non abbiamo intenzione
di fermarci qui. Vogliamo crescere e
diventare, sempre di più, una compagnia
di riferimento per gli italiani.

pentirete.

novelties. Of course we have kept our
word. Air Italy is stronger and stronger,
also thanks to a strategic partnership
agreement with Alitalia that captain
Giuseppe Gentile will explain in detail
to you. But in the last few months we
have not focused only on this agreement.
Air Italy has significantly increased
the number of its destinations, both
domestic and international ones.
Besides, the company has kept a
very high punctuality rating (for those
passengers who ran into some delays,
which unfortunately can happen, don’t
hold it against us) and it has managed to
offer very competitive fares, especially
when bookings are made in advance.
We have no intention of stopping now.
We want to grow and become even more
a key airline for Italians.

Per una compagnia aerea il successo si misura con pochi
indicatori chiave: la soddisfazione dei propri clienti;
un bilancio in equilibrio; accordi importanti che consentano
di guardare al futuro con ottimismo e voglia di crescere.
Nonostante un 2009 che è stato sicuramente il peggiore per
le compagnie aeree (complice una crisi economica talmente
profonda da ricordare quella del 1929), Air Italy ha centrato
tutti e tre questi indicatori e guarda al futuro prossimo con
ottimismo.

Airlines estimate their success through few key indicators:
their own customers’ satisfaction; a healthy balance;
important agreements that allow to look at the future with
optimism and will to grow. Although 2009 was the worst year
ever for airlines (mainly because of an economic crisis whose
seriousness reminds of the 1929 crash), Air Italy reached all
these three goals and now looks at what comes next with
optimism.
“Just as when there is turbulence during
the flight, we wobbled. But the worst
is over and we can close the
2008/2009 balance
with all our
operational
indexes
significantly
increasing,” says Giuseppe
Gentile, Air Italy President and
C.E.O. “The crisis was more serious
than expected, but people continue to
travel, both for work and for pleasure, and they
choose those airlines that offer the best product in
terms of quality, safety and price. We are among these
companies, the results achieved during the last year and in
the first months of 2010 prove it,” adds Gentile.
“It is not by chance that Alitalia has made a partnership
agreement with us. This agreement involves 15 domestic
connections and 150 weekly flights,” points out Gentile.
The agreement, which started on May 3rd 2010, provides
for the activation of a code-share system on the basis of »

prodotto migliore in termini di qualità, sicurezza e prezzo.
Noi siamo tra questi e lo dimostrano i risultati ottenuti
nell’ultimo anno e in questa parte del 2010” aggiunge Gentile.
“Non è infatti un caso che Alitalia abbia stretto un accordo
di partnership proprio con noi, un accordo che riguarda
15 collegamenti nazionali e 150 frequenze settimanali”
sottolinea Gentile.
L’accordo, partito il 3 maggio scorso, prevede l’attivazione di
un code share in base al quale Alitalia e Air Italy opereranno
con doppio codice, Alitalia “AZ” e Air Italy “I9”, voli di linea
domestici su 10 aeroporti italiani: Bari, Catania, Genova,
Milano Orio al Serio, Napoli, Olbia, Palermo, Roma, Torino e
Verona. In un secondo momento verranno attivati anche voli
intercontinentali.
L’accordo di partnership consente ad Alitalia e Air Italy
di incrementare in modo significativo la propria offerta
commerciale su numerosi aeroporti in Italia, tra i quali in
particolare Torino, Napoli, Verona e Milano Orio al Serio.
In questo modo aumenta il portafoglio di rotte point-topoint soprattutto per le direttrici Nord – Sud e il numero di
frequenze giornaliere offerte. I clienti di Alitalia e Air Italy
possono così contare su una scelta molto piu’ ampia delle
combinazioni dei voli e degli orari.
“L’accordo con Alitalia ci consente di ampliare il numero
delle destinazioni servite e delle frequenze offerte,
andando incontro alle esigenze sempre crescenti dei nostri
clienti. L’assonanza dei colori, delle livree e dei rispettivi
marchi attribuisce alla partnership la caratteristica di una
affermazione di compagnie italiane sul proprio territorio
nazionale” aggiunge Gentile.
Nel dettaglio, dopo l’accordo di partnership, Air Italy
incrementa la propria offerta da Verona volando, da sola o in
code share con Alitalia, verso Roma, Napoli, Bari, Catania e
Palermo per un totale di 84 frequenze settimanali. Da Torino
Air Italy vola verso Roma, Catania e Olbia con 99 frequenze
settimanali. Da Milano Orio al Serio Air Italy vola verso Napoli
e Olbia (16 frequenze settimanali). Da Genova verso Palermo
e Olbia (11 frequenze settimanali). Da Bari verso Verona e
Olbia (17 frequenze la settimana). Da Palermo verso Genova
e Verona (14 frequenze settimanali). Da Catania verso Verona,
Torino, Napoli e Olbia (29 frequenze settimanali). Da Olbia
verso Napoli, Catania, Torino, Bari, Milano Orio al Serio e
Genova (38 frequenze settimanali). Da Napoli Air Italy vola
verso Milano Orio Al Serio, Verona, Catania, Palermo, Olbia,
Torino e Nizza (oltre 100 frequenze settimanali).
“La nostra idea è quella di fornire un servizio di qualità e
a costi accessibili senza le limitazioni delle compagnia low
cost. Per via dei prezzi molto competitivi che noi offriamo,
molti ci identificano con le low cost. Ma noi non lo siamo.
Non facciamo pagare a parte i bagagli. Non imponiamo (a
pagamento) il check in online. Non cerchiamo di offrire a
tutti i costi assicurazioni e altri balzelli a pagamento. Per non
parlare del fatto che, a differenza delle low cost, noi voliamo

Italian airports with a double code, Alitalia “AZ” and Air Italy
“I9”: Bari, Catania, Genoa, Milan Orio al Serio, Naples, Olbia,

flights will be activated.
This partnership agreement allows Alitalia and Air Italy to
significantly increase their commercial offer in several Italian
airports, in particular Turin, Verona and Milan Orio al Serio.
In this way the portfolio of point-to-point routes, above all for
the North-South ones, is growing, so is doing the number of
daily flights offered. Therefore the customers of Alitalia and
Air Italy can count on a much wider choice of flights and times
combinations.
“The agreement with Alitalia helps us increase the number
of destinations served and flights offered, so that we are able
to meet the growing needs of our customers. The assonance

Africa, Asia, Centro America” sottolinea Gentile.
La crescita di Air Italy non si ferma qui. L’obiettivo resta
quello di diventare la seconda compagnia italiana nel giro di
pochi anni. “Tutto il nostro lavoro va in questa direzione. La
decisione di avere un magazzino ricambi molto fornito, far
certificare i nostri bilanci dalle migliori società di revisione,
essere impeccabili nella gestione societaria, mettere il
cliente al centro dell’attenzione e ammettere i nostri errori
pagandone le conseguenze. In questo modo si gestisce
una compagnia per farla crescere nel tempo rinunciando
a guadagni immediati ma effimeri. Noi ci proviamo con
entusiasmo. La sfida è difficile, la concorrenza agguerrita,
ma noi abbiamo un grande alleato: i nostri passeggeri”.

More in detail, after the partnership agreement Air Italy is
increasing its offer from Verona airport by flying, either by
itself or on a code share with Alitalia, to Rome, Naples, Bari,
Catania and Palermo, for an overall 84 weekly flights. From
Turin Air Italy flies to Rome, Catania and Olbia with 99 weekly
flights. From Milan Orio al Serio Air Italy flies to Naples and
Olbia (16 weekly flights). From Genoa to Palermo and Olbia
(11 weekly flights). From Naples verso to Milan Orio al Serio,
Verona and Olbia (40 weekly flights). From Bari to Verona and
Olbia (17 weekly flights). From Palermo to Genoa and Verona

(29 weekly flights). From Olbia to Naples, Catania, Turin, Bari,
Milan Orio al Serio and Genoa (38 weekly flights).
“Our aim is to provide a high-quality and affordable service
without the restraints of low-cost airlines. Because of the
very competitive fares we offer, many people identify us with
low-cost companies. But we are not a low-cost company.
We don’t charge travellers separately for their baggage. We
don’t impose (with a fee) online check-in. We don’t try to
offer insurances and other fees at all costs. Not to mention
that, unlikely low-cost airlines, we normally operate on
international routes, to South America, Central America,
Africa, Asia,” underlines Gentile.
The growth of Air Italy doesn’t stop here. The goal remains
that of becoming one of the three most important Italian
airlines in a few years’ time. “All our efforts have been
directed to achieve it. The decision to have a very wellprovided spare parts warehouse, to have our balances
certified by the best audit companies, to be flawless in
our company management, to put the customer first, to
admit our mistakes by paying for them. In this way we run
a company to make it grow over time, avoiding quick but
ephemeral gains. We try to do it with enthusiasm. This is a
difficult challenge, the competition is fierce, but we can rely
on a great ally: our passengers”.

Due fili stesi sulla spiaggia e candide tovaglie ricamate a
mano che sventolano per essere comprate: torniamo in
Madagascar, stavolta solo per lo shopping. L’artigianato
di questa destinazione è d’indubbio pregio, anche solo per
i materiali oltre che per il prezioso lavoro delle donne. Il
cotone bianchissimo e i soggetti che queste instancabili
ricamatrici eseguono sui tovagliati impreziosiscono opere per
le quali vale la pena lasciare posto in valigia. Certi materiali
sono anche impiegati da diverse associazioni presenti nelle
grandi città nel mercato equo solidale. È il caso del “papier
Antimoro” detto anche “carta di riso” che con il cereale non
ha proprio alcun legame. Fu introdotto in Madagascar dagli
arabi nel XVI secolo e oggi le donne lavorano la corteccia
dell’”Avoha”, un arbusto semi acquatico, battendola con
martelli per renderla una poltiglia semiliquida e farla bollire,
poi solidificare ed essiccare al sole. Mentre la stendono su
un piano aggiungono fiori, ramoscelli, piccole foglie e creano
così fogli di carta unici, dai quali si fanno buste, album,
bomboniere, carta regalo, sacchettini. Altro materiale che
gli artigiani del Madagascar utilizzano è il corno di zebù,
una sorta di mucca dalle cui corna si crea posateria, ciotole,
bigiotteria e souvenir. Si lavora a caldo e assume colorazioni
gialle, nere, bianche e azzurre.
Non mancano naturalmente creazioni di cesteria in rafìa,
sisal, raban e bambù. Con quest’ultima pianta, intrecciata, si
creano anche complementi d’arredo come piccoli mobili e
poltrone mentre con la rafia bellissimi cesti, borse e stuoie.
Ma il Madagscar è l’isola dei legni pregiati, a cominciare
dall’ebano nero oppure il Bois de rose viola, il palissandro.
Ed essendo isola giurassica, la nostra abbonda anche
di minerali e fossili: granito, diaspro, laborite, quarzi
e cristalli montati su anelli e bracciali. Infine, il
ritorno all’infanzia con i piccoli giocattoli realizzati
in coloratissima latta riciclata: macchinine, moto,
biciclette fatte recuperando lattine e barattoli.
Decisamente romantiche e idea eco-sostenibile
per le prossime decorazioni natalizie. Basta un
nastrino e l’albero, a dicembre, vi ricorderà
Nosy be.

Two strings hanging on the beach and pure hand-embroidered
tablecloths gently waving, waiting to be bought: we go back
to Madagascar, this time just for shopping. This destination’s
handicraft is undoubtedly precious, both for the materials that
are commonly used and for women’s important work. The bonewhite cotton and the patterns sewn on tablecloths and napkins
by tireless embroiderers embellish these amazing works, for
which it is worth leaving some space in your luggage. Some
materials are used also by many city organizations dealing
with fair-trade. This is the case of the “papier Antimoro”, also
named “rice paper”, although it has nothing to do with this
cereal. The “papier Antimoro” was introduced in Madagascar
by the Arabs in the 16th century. Nowadays women process the
bark of the Avoha tree, a semi-aquatic shrub, by hammering it
to turn it into an almost liquid mush. Then, it will be boiled, let
solidify and sun-dry. While women spread it on a flat surface,
they add flowers, twigs and small leaves, creating unique paper
sheets, which will later become envelopes, albums, wedding
keep-sakes, gift-wrap, small bags. Another material exploited
by Malagasy artisans is the Zebu horn. A Zebu is a type of
domestic cattle whose horns are used to make cutlery, costume
jewellery and souvenirs. Its horn is warm-worked, becoming
yellow, black, white and blue. Of course also baskets are a
local must: they are made of raffia, sisal, rabanne and bamboo.
In particular, woven bamboo allows to make small pieces of
furniture like cupboards or armchairs, while raffia turns into
baskets, bags and mats. However, Madagascar is the island of
precious woods too, starting from black ebony or purple Bois de
rose, rosewood. Since this is a Jurassic island, it also abounds
with minerals and fossils: granite, rose marble stone, laborite,
quartz and crystals mounted in rings and bracelets. Lastly,
there are the small toys made of colourful recycled tin that will
bring back your childhood memories: mini-cars, motorbikes,
bicycles, all built with old cans and tins. For next Christmas’
decorations, these are really romantic and eco-sustainable
ideas. In December, a ribbon and a pine-tree will be enough to
remind you of Nosy be.

hours either by car or by motorbike to

tourists. Moving from Nuoro to Fonni,
a few kilometres away you will skirt the
Gennargentu mountain range, where
during the winter even a skiing facility
is working, while during the summer
the mild climate allow people to take
long walks until Punta La Marmora,
Sardinia’s highest peak (1,834 metres),
a balcony with a view. From up there you
can admire the Oristanese coast, the
beauties of the Campidano province, the
spiky rock walls of the Ogliastra region,
the lights of Cagliari and its south-east

boast a vast production of cheese, meat
(the famous porceddu) and cold cuts

come uno spettacolo meraviglioso di

rocce dalle strane forme. Ad Aritzo, il
paese delle castagne, domina la pietra
denominata Texile, un gigantesco fungo
che si erge solitario in mezzo ad una
zona fittamente ricoperta di boschi e
meta di speleologi provenienti da tutta
Italia. Tonara, il padre del torrone sardo,
potrebbe essere una delle ultime tappe
non prima di aver visitato i vigneti e le
cantine del Mandrolisai, che producono
un vino eccellente e leggero. Tutti questi
paesi sono dotati di strutture ricettive
adatte a tutte le esigenze, e se siete
fortunati potreste capitare in qualche
sagra, in qualche manifestazione dove
folklore e tradizione, canti e costumi
vi faranno innamorare di questi luoghi
poco conosciuti ma che insieme
compongono il cuore della Sardegna.

quando non si tratta di oggetti “comuni”. Flyreaders ha scovato

Troverà le creazioni Eka. Ne abbiamo parlato con l’artista, Cristina
Rotondaro.
Da dove arriva l’ispirazione per i suoi gioielli?
Tutte le creazioni Eka prendono forma da un’ispirazione (la semplice
osservazione della natura, l’architettura, una forma semplice..)
oppure da uno studio più profondo come la ricerca di simboli legati
alle antiche culture. Tutte le creazioni quindi provengono da un
‘vissuto’ che può appartenere alla mia storia personale di nomade
o alla necessità di esprimere emozioni e simboli dell’inconscio. Il
denominatore comune rimane sempre quella ricerca interiore,
propria dell’animo umano, che resta immutata e immutabile
attraverso i secoli.
Lei li definisce “preziosi d’animo”: perché?
Perché il loro animo, il loro carattere, il loro contenuto ‘sottile’ è
prezioso in quanto frutto di una ricerca interiore, di qualcosa da
esprimere, da comunicare e da condividere al di là della preziosità
in termini materiali più ‘grossolani’ come l’oro, i diamanti eccetera.
Quale tipo di lavorazione predilige?
I gioielli Eka sono pervasi da un’artigianalità preziosa: ogni singolo
pezzo è fatto rigorosamente a mano da maestri orafi selezionati.
La meticolosa cura con cui vengono realizzati questi gioielli, è
esemplificata nelle lavorazioni usate, come ad esempio quella a
cera persa, dove ogni disegno originale viene modellato nella cera.
Il risultato sono gioielli unici, sempre diversi tra loro.
Nel suo iter creativo segue la moda oppure il suo istinto e gusto
creativo?
Credo in un grande inconscio collettivo, come un think tank nel
quale tutti i creativi poi si ritrovano al di là della loro esposizione
al mondo. Mi spiego meglio, succede per mistero che spesso
tutti insieme facciano uscire cose simili come se si fossero messi
d’accordo o copiati l’un l’altro. C’è chi chiama questo fenomeno
evento sincronico. In realtà non amo la moda, non sono una shopper
quindi non so che forma o colore andrà e sicuramente non creo
pensando a cosa vende di più quindi in realtà è
sempre un sentire cosa sta succedendo
nel tempo.

be an impossible will, above all when it is not about “common”

Where does the inspiration for your jewels come from?
All Eka’s creations take their shape from some kind of inspiration
(the pure observation of nature, architecture, a simple shape) or
from a more in-depth study, like the investigation on symbols
of ancient cultures. Therefore, all the creations come from
experience, which can grow out either of my personal story of
a wanderer or of my need to express emotions and symbols of
the unconscious. The common denominator remains the inner
search, which belongs to the human soul and is unchanged and
unchangeable through the centuries.
You define your creations “soul jewels”: why?
Because their soul, their character, their “fine” content is precious
since it is the fruit of an inner search, of something to express, to
convey and to share beyond the more “superficial” preciousness
based on materials, like gold, diamonds, etc.
Which kind of working techniques do you prefer?
Eka’s jewels are imbued with a precious hand-crafted mark:
every single piece is strictly handmade by skilled goldsmiths. The
meticulous care behind the creation of this jewellery is exemplified
by the type of techniques we adopt, such as the lost-wax casting:
a wax mould is used to create every original model. The result are
unique pieces of jewellery, always different from each other.
In your creative course, do you follow fashion or your instinct and
your creative taste?
I believe in a big collective unconscious, a sort of think tank where
all creative people meet beyond their creations’ exposure around
the world. What I mean is that sometimes it mysteriously happens
that all together artists create very similar things, as if they agreed
on it or they copied each other. Someone calls this phenomenon
“synchronic event”. Actually I don’t love fashion, I am not a
shopaholic, so I don’t know which clothes or colours are going to
be trendy. Honestly when I create I don’t think of how to sell more,
so it is always about feeling what is happening over time.

A volte di imbarazzante. Ma il credito può essere una forma
di gestione delle proprie finanze così come un modo per non
rinviare qualcosa che si vuole fare ma non si riesce a gestire

ha bisogno di soldi e chi invece vuole prestarli. Una formula
che sta avendo un grande successo perchè agevola chi ha
bisogno del prestito, consentendogli di richiederlo facendo
tutto (o quasi) al computer ad un tasso inferiore a quello
pagato con i circuiti bancari. Ma diventa molto conveniente
anche per chi ha denaro da “investire”, prestandolo e avendo
un ritorno interessante.

Capitale mondiale di pesca d’altura, Mauritius è il paradiso
di subacquei, velisti, surfisti e cacciatori di tesori nascosti,
visto che i suoi fondali racchiudono oltre 50 relitti. Di origini
vulcaniche, l’isola fu scoperta da navigatori portoghesi, ma
colonizzata dagli olandesi, che le diedero l’attuale nome in
onore del governatore, il principe Maurice di Nassau.
Fu occupata successivamente dai francesi, divenne infine
dominio della Corona Britannica, fino all’indipendenza come
stato del Commonwealth, nel 1968. Poi, nel 1992 Mauritius ha
scelto di diventare una repubblica democratica parlamentare.
Di qui si comprende come il melting pot culturale che la
distingue sia un po’ il suo biglietto da visita: la popolazione,
infatti, è quell’interessante mix di componenti indiane, cinesi,
africane, malgasce, creole ed europee che stupisce ogni
visitatore al suo arrivo.
Non solo spiagge
In un viaggio in questa destinazione dell’Oceano Indiano non si
dovrebbero vivere soltanto le senza dubbio stupende spiagge,
ma trovare l’occasione di visitare l’entroterra e fare ecoturismo.
Il trekking tra cime vulcaniche, fiumi, cascate, nonché le scalate
delle montagne degli alti plateau, per andare alla scoperta di
foreste fittissime, piantagioni di canna da zucchero, coltivazioni
di spezie e passeggiare tra piante secolari e flora rigogliosa, a
piedi, in bici o a cavallo sono assolutamente consigliate e fanno
la differenza della solita vacanza al mare dei Tropici.
E al contrario di troppe destinazioni esotiche ancora indietro
con le politiche governative in materia di rispetto dell’ambiente
naturale, a Mauritius si è sviluppata un’efficace attività in tal
senso.
Negli ultimi decenni essa ha portato alla creazione di numerosi
parchi nazionali, riserve zoologiche e aree protette, con
l’obiettivo di sviluppare l’interazione tra viaggiatori e comunità
ospitanti. Tra le associazioni naturalistiche c’è il Mauritius

World capital of big game fishing, Mauritius is the paradise of
scuba divers, yachtsmen, surfers and hidden treasure hunters,
since its sea beds host over 50 shipwrecks. The volcanic island
was discovered by Portuguese navigators but subsequently
colonised by the Dutch, who named it after its governor,
Maurice of Nassau, prince of Orange. It was then occupied by
the French and finally became a colony of the British Crown,
until gaining independence as a Commonwealth member
state in 1968. Later, in 1992, Mauritius chose to become a
parliamentary democratic republic. Hence you understand
how the cultural melting pot that makes the island unique
is its trademark: as a matter of fact the population is a mix
of Indian, Chinese, African, Malagasy, Creole and European
features, which amazes all the visitors when they get there.
Not only beaches
During a holiday in such a destination of the Indian Ocean one
should not get to know only these definitely beautiful beaches,
but should also take the opportunity to visit the hinterland and
live an eco-tourism experience. Go trekking through volcanic »
Wildlife Foundation (http://www.mauritian-wildlife.org), fondo
dedicato originariamente alla conservazione della crécerelle,
un piccolo falco bruno e bianco simile al gheppio europeo,
divenuto simbolo della tutela ambientale dell’isola e delle
specie minacciate. L’associazione privata oggi non si dedica più
al falco, che è ormai fuori pericolo di estinzione, ma a diverse
specie endemiche in pericolo dell’isola come il colombo rosa e
il parrocchetto verde maggiore.
Oltre alla salvaguardia delle specie in pericolo, la fondazione
ha promosso un movimento di opinione che ha portato alla
creazione delle prime aree protette dell’isola: la più estesa
è la riserva del Black River Gorges con i suoi 6.500 ettari di
foresta, la più celebre è Ile aux Aigrettes, un isolotto della
costa meridionale prediletto dai colombi rosa. Altre due riserve
naturali sono le isolette Île Ronde e Ile aux Serpents, situate a
circa 24 km di distanza dalla costa settentrionale di Mauritius.
Sorprendente entroterra
L’entroterra di Mauritius si svela assolutamente inaspettato.
I rilievi si innalzano ripidi nelle regioni meridionali fino a
formare un altopiano centrale che digrada dolcemente verso
le coste settentrionali. La regione occidentale è caratterizzata
dai rilievi montuosi di Moka e della Chaîne de Grand Port,
che accompagnano da nord a sud il profilo di questa costa.
Il territorio è attraversato da numerosi fiumi, come la Rivière
Noire, e i dislivelli morfologici creano dei salti d’acqua
imponenti, come le splendide cascate di Tamarin.
La vetta più alta raggiunge gli 828 metri, a Piton de la Rivière
Noire. Seguono cime più basse come la Montagne du Rempart e
il Pieter Borg e antichi residui vulcanici, come il cratere di Trou
aux Cerfs a Curepipe. Da non perdere per nessuna ragione, il
giardino botanico di Pamplemousses dove vedrete la palma
Hyophorbe amaricaulis, unico esemplare al mondo. »
In the first semester of this year 21,170 Italians visited
Mauritius, registering an 11,1% growth. However, the goal of
this destination that is loved not only by Italians is “to surpass
the 1 million arrivals target (overall), a challenge we feel ready
for”, says Xavier Luc Duval, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of
Tourism. “Given this, the Government has enacted the biggest
investment plan for the infrastructural development of the
country’s history, with an over one billion Euro allocation. One
of the first works was completed last February with the opening
of a new quay in the capital Saint Louis’ port, which makes of
Mauritius the only cruise hub of the Indian Ocean.” Besides, more
capital has been invested to finish other projects that had already
been started, like the international airport’s extension works, in
order to boost its capacity to 4 million passengers a year. From
2000 to 2009, Italian arrivals to Mauritius have increased by
45%. Following the strategy of improving the level of the island’s
hotel quality, in 2010 the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority
in Italy (Mtpa) is launching the brand “Mauritius Essentia”, the

Periplo in bici
Ricordarsi soltanto che la guida è a sinistra, per il resto il
perimetro dell’isola è perlopiù piatto quindi ideale per un tour in
bicicletta, alla scoperta di coste e riserve naturalistiche. Tra gli
itinerari consigliati: da Port Louis a Mont Choisy, da Black River
Gorges a Tamarin, da Souillac a Le Morne con il tour del Monte
Brabant, da Souillac alle scogliere di Gris Gris, da Maheboug a
Le Souffleur. Per il noleggio delle biciclette ci si può rivolgere
generalmente presso gli alberghi.

plantations, spices cultivation and walking, going by bike or
horse-riding through centenarian trees and luxuriant vegetation:
all these activities are absolutely suggested, because they
set it apart from the ordinary tropical island holiday. Unlikely
in too many exotic destinations, which still have backward
governmental policies in the field of environmental safeguard, in
Mauritius a lot of things have been done in this direction. In the
last few decades this dynamism has brought to the creation on
several national parks, zoological reserves and protected areas
with the aim of developing the interaction between travellers and
local communities.

per 15 km verso sud nel cuore delle piantagioni del tè Bois Chéri
dove all’interno della fabbrica si assiste alla dimostrazione
del ciclo di produzione e ai vari processi di lavorazione, fino al
confezionamento del prodotto finito. Annesso alla fabbrica, il
museo del tè Bois Chéri. Il tour si conclude con Le Saint Aubin,
altra dimora coloniale oggi trasformata in raffinata table d’hôte,
dove è possibile assaggiare i piatti della cucina creola. Nei
giardini della villa, si trovano una piantagione di vaniglia, una
di anthurium, fiore simbolo dell’isola, e una distilleria di rhum.

Molti sono gli hotel presso i quali è possibile organizzare

Amazing hinterland
The Mauritian hinterland appears as a wonderful surprise. In
the southern regions, hills steeply rise until they form a central
plateau that gently slopes to the northern coasts. The western
region is defined by the mountain ranges of Moka and Chaîne
de Grand Port, which outlines this coast from north to south.
The land is crossed by many rivers, like the Rivière Noire, and
morphological gradients form massive water games, like the
wonderful Tamarin Falls. The highest summit reaches 828
metres in Piton de la Rivière Noire. Other lower peaks are the
Rempart Mountains or the Pieter Borg and the old volcanic
residues, like the Trou aux Cerfs crater in Curepipe. Not to be
missed is the botanical garden of Pamplemousses, where you
will see the Hyophorbe amaricaulis
palm tree, the world’s rarest
specimen.
Going around by bike
The only thing to remember is that
here people drive on the left, as for
the rest the island’s perimeter is
mainly plain and therefore ideal for
a bike tour, discovering coasts and
nature reserves. Among suggested
itineraries: from Port Louis to Mont
Choisy, from Black River Gorges to
Tamarin, from Souillac to Le Morne
touring the Monte Brabant, from
Souillac to the sea cliff at Gris Gris,
from Maheboug to Le Soffleur. To
rent a bike you can ask your hotel.
La Strada del tè

l’isola attraverso le sue tradizioni più antiche. La prima tappa
è la visita al Domaine des Aubineaux, una delle poche dimore
coloniali degli alti plateau mauriziani oggi conservate sull’isola,
Un Paese verso la modernità
Nel primo trimestre dell’anno 21.170 italiani hanno visitato
Mauritius, facendo registrare al nostro Paese una crescita
dell’11,1%. Ma l’obiettivo di questa destinazione così amata non
solo dagli italiani è “superare la quota di 1 milione di arrivi (totali),
una sfida per cui ci sentiamo pronti – dice Xavier Luc Duval, Vice
Primo Ministro e Ministro del turismo -. In quest’ottica il Governo
ha varato il più grande programma di investimenti per lo sviluppo
infrastrutturale mai realizzato nella storia del Paese, con uno
stanziamento pari ad oltre un miliardo di euro. Uno dei primi
interventi si è concluso lo scorso febbraio, con l’inaugurazione
di una nuova banchina passeggeri nel porto della capitale Port
Louis, che rende Mauritius l’unico hub crocieristico dell’Oceano
Indiano”. Sono inoltre state stanziate risorse per il completamento
dei progetti già in opera, come l’ampliamento dell’aeroporto
internazionale, al fine di aumentarne la capacità fino a 4 milioni di
passeggeri all’anno. Dal 2000 al 2009 gli arrivi italiani a Mauritius
sono cresciuti del 45%. In linea con la strategia di innalzamento
del livello di qualità alberghiera nell’isola, l’ente del turismo della
destinazione in Italia (Mtpa) nel 2010 lancerà il marchio “Mauritius

The Tea Road
Among naturalistic associations is the Mauritius Wildlife
Foundation (http://www.mauritian-wildlife.org), a fund originally
dedicated to the conservation of the “crécerelle” (the Mauritius
Kestrel), a small chestnut-and-white falcon looking like the
European kestrel, which has turned into the symbol of the
island’s environmental protection and of all endangered species.
Today the private organization no longer focuses on this falcon,
which is now is not at risk of extinction: it has directed its
attention to many endangered endemic species, like the Pink
Pigeon or the Echoo Parakeet. In addition to the safeguard of
endangered species, the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation has
fostered a movement that led to the creation of the island’s first
protected areas. The largest is the Black River Gorges national
park, which covers 6,500 hectares of native forest, while the most
famous is Ile aux Aigrettes, a small island located off the south
east coast, the Pink Pigeons’ favourite refuge. Other two natural
reserves are the small islands Île Ronde and Île aux Serpents,
which are situated around 24 kilometres away from Mauritius’
northern coast.

“La Route du Thé”, which winds
along three stages, allows tourists to discover the island
through its oldest traditions. The first stage is the visit to the
Domaine des Abineaux, one of the few remaining colonial
houses of the plateaus, which still maintains old furnishings
and authentic paintings. 15 kilometres south you will get to the
heart of the Bois Chéri tea plantations, where inside the factory
you will watch the processing of tea leaves until the packaging
of the finished product. Next to the factory is the Bois Chéri tea
museum. The tour with Le Saint Aubin, another colonial house
that has been converted into an elegant table d’hôte, where
you can taste the typical dishes of Creole cuisine. The villa’s
gardens host plantations of vanilla and anthurium, the exotic
flower symbol of the island, and a rum distillery.
Getting married on the island

advance. As in Italy, there are two kinds of ceremonies: civil and
religious wedding. The “Civil Status Act” (Section 24A) provides
that non citizens can get married after a 24 hour publication.
Foreign people wishing to contract civil marriage in Mauritius
must apply to the Central Civil Status Office in order to get a
certificate attesting that they are neither citizens nor residents
in the country. If instead two Catholics want to contract a
religious wedding in a church on the island, they must apply

Incredibile ma vero, tra casuarine e séga - la danza creola
che si esegue con passi strisciati e piroette e viene ballata
sulle spiagge al ritmo di musica latinoamericana, caraibica o
africana – c’è pure una Cyber City, cioè un distretto tecnologico
a 15 minuti d’auto dalla capitale Port Louis. La sua istituzione è
il primo passo verso la realizzazione degli obiettivi governativi
volti a trasformare Mauritius in un paese moderno. Distribuita
su di un’area totale di 172 acri, questa piccola Sylicon Valley
africana è divisa in sette zone principali tutte cablate con fibre
ottiche a banda larga: 27 acri di Multimedia zone, che verteranno
sulla Cyber Tower contenente 42.274 mq di IT work space,
incluse multimedia facilities per conferenze e presentazioni
e un network satellitare. 50 acri di Business Zone, divisa in
aree di un acro ciascuna in grado di garantire alle società IT
di organizzare al meglio il loro lavoro. 18 acri di Knowledge
centre dedicato alla formazione integrata e al training. 13 acri
di centro commerciale: una sorta di IT Hypermarket dotato
dei più moderni accorgimenti tecnologici. 9 acri dedicati
all’ospitalità alberghiera per i professionisti in visita. 13 acri
di Administrative Block per gli uffici governativi e parastatali.
Infine una parte di Residential Complex per soggiorni medio
lunghi. Tra i servizi offerti: computing on demand, un internet
data center, hosting, e-commerce e transazioni finanziarie.
E c’è pure Cyber Caravan che quotidianamente visita anche i
villaggi più remoti dell’isola: il bus è dotato di nove computer e
si può definire a tutti gli effetti un corso di informatica itinerante
dedicato ai bambini, disoccupati e disabili.
Cyber city and casuarine
Unbelievable but true, in addition to casuarinas trees and séga
– the Creole dance based on shuffling steps and swaying hips
that is danced on beaches with Latin American, Caribbean
or African music – there is also a Cyber City, a technological
district located 15 minutes by car from the capital Port Louis.
Its establishment is the first step towards the achievement
of the governmental goals aimed at turning Mauritius into a
modern country. Covering a 172-acre area, this small African
Silicon Valley is divided into seven main areas, all equipped
with broadband optical fibre cables: the 27-acre Multimedia
Zone, whose core is the Ebene Cyber Tower. The latter includes
a 42,274 square-metre IT work space including several
multimedia facilities intended for conferences or presentations
and a satellite network. The 50-acre business zone is divided
into many 1-acre areas that allow IT companies to organize
their work in the best way. The 18-acre Knowledge Centre
is dedicated to vocational and further training. The 13-acre
shopping centre is a sort of IT Hypermarket equipped with
the most innovative technological devices. A 9-acre area is
designed to host professionals visiting Mauritius. The 13-acre
Administrative Block houses governmental and governmentcontrolled offices. Last, a section of the Residential Complex is
intended for medium and long term stays. Among the services
offered are on-demand computing, internet data centre,
hosting, e-commerce and financial transactions. There is also
the Cyber Caravan, which every day visits the island’s most
remote villages: this converted coach is equipped with nine

PCs and can be defined as a travelling computer course for
children, unemployed people and the disabled.

dedicato originariamente alla conservazione della crécerelle,
un piccolo falco bruno e bianco simile al gheppio europeo,
divenuto simbolo della tutela ambientale dell’isola e delle
specie minacciate. L’associazione privata oggi non si dedica più
al falco, che è ormai fuori pericolo di estinzione, ma a diverse
specie endemiche in pericolo dell’isola come il colombo rosa
e il parrocchetto verde maggiore. Oltre alla salvaguardia delle
specie in pericolo, la fondazione ha promosso un movimento di
opinione che ha portato alla creazione delle prime aree protette
dell’isola: la più estesa è la riserva del Black River Gorges con
i suoi 6.500 ettari di foresta, la più celebre è Ile aux Aigrettes,
un isolotto della costa meridionale prediletto dai colombi
rosa. Altre due riserve naturali sono le isolette Île Ronde e
Ile aux Serpents, situate a circa 24 km di distanza dalla costa
settentrionale di Mauritius.

“Dio creò Mauritius e poi il Paradiso terrestre”: così scrisse
Mark Twain nel suo Following the Equator (Seguendo l’Equatore).
L’autore americano delle celebri Avventure di Huckleberry Finn
(così come quelle di Tom Sawyer) non è stato il solo a subire
il fascino di questo approdo dell’Oceano Indiano: Charles
Baudelaire vi scrisse la sua prima poesia, A une Dame créole,
mentre soggiornava a Pamplemousses. Anche Joseph Conrad,
che aveva fatto scalo nell’isola per un carico di zucchero, ne
rimase stregato e la descrive in Un briciolo di fortuna come
“una perla che distilla grande dolcezza sul mondo”. Simbolo
di natura incontaminata, di fascino creolo e di avventura,
Mauritius è l’ambientazione di opere letterarie del passato come
di romanzi contemporanei. La più famosa è Paul e Virginie di
Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, in cui la purezza dell’isola rispecchia
quella dei sentimenti dei protagonisti. Per tornare ad autori
moderni, ecco Patrick O’ Brian “Verso Mauritius “ (Tea, Milano
2000). Irlandese di nazionalità britannica, dopo l’impiego nei
servizi segreti durante la Seconda guerra mondiale si dedicò
al suo sogno, la letteratura, e con essa raggiunse il successo,
grazie alla saga dei suoi due marinai, Jack Aubrey e Stephen
Maturin. I due avventurieri inglesi partono verso l’Oceano
Indiano mentre l’Europa è in balia delle guerre napoleoniche.
L’obiettivo è di neutralizzare quattro fregate francesi che stanno
ostacolando il traffico dei velieri della Compagnia delle Indie
nelle acque di Mauritius e La Réunion. Seguendo le avventure
dei due protagonisti si scopre un’isola ancora selvaggia e le
vicende a cavallo fra storia ed epica, ambientate in luoghi reali e
contrassegnate da episodi eroici veramente accaduti, ricavati da
diari di bordo, archivi e testimonianze dell’epoca. (P.B.)
“God created Mauritius and then Heaven”: Mark Twain wrote
these words in his novel “Following the Equator”. The American
author of the famous Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (as well as
Tom Sawyer’s) was not the only one who fell under the spell of
this destination in the Indian Ocean. Charles Baudelaire wrote
his first poem here, “A une dame créole”, while he was staying
in Pamplemousses. Also Joseph Conrad, whose vessel called on
the island to fetch a cargo of sugar, was bewitched by its beauty
and he described it in his short story “A smile of Fortune” as

Mauritius Command” by Patrick O’ Brian (Tea, Milano 2000).
Now considered very Irish although he was British, after working
for the military intelligence during the Second World War, he
devoted himself to his dream, literature. He soon achieved great
success thanks to the saga of captain Jack Aubrey and naval
surgeon Stephen Maturin. The two English adventurers set sail
for the Indian Ocean while Europe is at the mercy of Napoleonic
wars. Their task is to neutralize four French frigates that are
hindering the trades of the East India Company in the waters of
Mauritius and La Réunion. By following the adventures of the two
protagonists we discover a still wild island and we live events
straddling history and epics, set in existing places and marked by
real heroic actions that were taken from logbooks, archives and

BENZINA E DIESEL La Porsche Cayenne è
stato il suv più rivoluzionario della storia recente, perchè
ha trasformato una casa automobilistica che era sinonimo
di sportività classica in un marchio che oggi offre anche
un fuoristrada con un motore e un allestimento targato
Porsche.
Una vettura che resta immutata nello spirito e nell’aspetto,
ma con molti e progressivi cambiamenti. Soprattutto nelle
motorizzazioni, nel tentativo di contenere i consumi. In
quest’ottica Porsche presenta i nuovi V6 benzina e diesel. I
modelli combinano le caratteristiche tipiche della Cayenne,
quali comoda sportività ed elevata idoneità all’uso fuoristrada, con un’efficienza esemplare, riuscendo a contenere i
consumi sotto i 10 litri per 100 chilometri. La nuova Cayenne
con Tiptronic S, infatti, consuma 9,9 l/100 km nel NEDC
(Nuovo ciclo di guida europeo), pari a circa il 20 percento in
BMW X5 M Cominciamo con il dire che ci vogliono
113.500 euro (una volta tanto con tutti gli accessori più importanti), una cifra di tutto rispetto, ai vertici del listino della
casa tedesca. Ma, avendoli, sono soldi ben spesi. La X5 M è
un’automobile di straordinaria versatilità per essere un suv.
Grande spazio per i passeggeri, un bagagliaio enorme, silenziosità e confort ai massimi livelli. A tutto questo aggiungente
che stiamo parlando di una versione M, il massimo della
sportività in casa Bmw.
La prova di Flyreaders non ha evidenziato punti deboli
significativi. Nemmeno il consumo, considerando la cilindrata 4.4 e i 400 cavalli. In autostrada, rigidamente a 130 km/h,
siamo riusciti a strappare un ottimo 7 chilometri con un litro.
Nel misto tra i 6 e i 7 km, in città (ma senza molto traffico)
poco meno di 6 km. Un risultato sorprendente. Nonostante
la mole (circa 2 tonnellate e mezzo) la X5 M è scattante come
una due posti sportiva, da 0 a 100 km in 4 secondi e 7 decimi.
L’allestimento è sobrio nella sua sportività. Fantastico il
volante ma tutti i rivestimenti interni (in pelle) sono di grande
qualità. Una vettura da sogno.

This is a car whose soul and exterior look remain unchanged over time. Nevertheless, many gradual changes have taken place. Above all when it comes to engines, with the aim
of reducing fuel consumption. In order to achieve this goal,
Porsche is presenting its new petrol and diesel V6 models.

BMW X5 M Let’s start by saying that you need
113,500 Euros to buy it (for once with all the most important accessories included): a remarkable sum of money, at
the top of the German company’s price list. Although it is a
SUV, the X5 M is an extraordinarily versatile car. It guarantees plenty of space for passengers, a huge trunk, no
engine noise and the highest level of comfort. Besides, we
are talking about a M version, BMW’s sportiest model.
Flyreaders’ test has not pointed out any significant weak
point. Not even fuel consumption, despite its 4.4-litre and
400 horsepower engine. On motorways, never exceeding
the 130 km/h speed limit, we have managed to cover 7
kilometres with only a litre. On mixed routes between 6 and
7 kilometres, while on urban roads a bit less than 6 kilometres (with not much traffic). This is a surprising result. In
spite of its size (around 2.5 tons) the X5 M is as dynamic as
a two-seat sports car: from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in
4.7 seconds. The interior equipment is sportily sober. The
steering-wheel is wonderful. All the interior leather upholstery is qualitatively great too. A dream vehicle.
